software updates - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

hi
I,ve just replaced a nexus7 2013 after i hit the multitouch problem, everything was fine with it whilst it was running build JWR66N,but then i got a notification to update to the latest version.
I was reluctant to do so,but eventually decided to take the plunge,so i updated,it put build JSS15Q on my nexus...result was terrible multitouch issues, basically the update had inflicted my "working perfectly tablet" with the dreaded multitouch issue, needless to say i was gutted.
My new nexus again comes with the JWR66N build,my question is,can i stop the tablet auto downloading the new update(JSS15Q),i know i don't actually have to install it,but i was told that if i power of my nexus,it will automatically install the update when i reboot,is this true?
Don't want to go anywhere near that JSS15Q update,or any future updates at all if possible.
To be honest,i'm not that interested in having bleeding edge versions,if my nexus works flawlessly on the JWR66N build then i could'nt care less if i never updated ever again,if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You should look at the two posts in my signature. They will cover everything you need.
BTW the update won't automatically install when you reboot. You can also turn off the notification in the framework services configuration.

Okay, thanks Sfhub, can I just ask though,I have the jss15q update sitting in my notification panel, until I specifically allow it,will it just stay there,I mean, will it at some point install itself without any action by me.
What happens if I reboot, will that instigate the update process.
As long as I'M in control of when it gets installed I'm happy,I know it fixes the GPS issue, but I literally never use GPS,so I'm not bothered about fixing that.
Would really really appreciate some help on this, cheers pal

Correct
settings->apps->all->google services framework
uncheck show notifications
if you get tired of the notification (it'll probably get rid of other Google notifications also)

This shouldn't happen, though you might hit the notification by accident then panic and ask it to continue.

Currently, Ventriloid and Mangler are non functional for the Android JB firmware. Although the Ventriloid dev has posted a temp fix in the app description, it crashes alot and will not serve much use for me. Is it possible for someone to post a fixed app or a way to access vent on JB?

Just wanted to jump in and mention that I am having issues too. Samsung SII, cm10. When I start ventriloid is initially says connecting, but then very often goes back to mobile's home screen. It then leaves a notification bar entry saying that it is connected. When you click on that, it does its two vibrates and goes off entirely. Sometimes I can get it going again, but is very fiddly. Dont know if this helps. Hope so.

Have downloaded and it seems to work well. (Did loose the Ventriloid icon though!) One comment: One must tick the box Enable Global Push to Talk in order to see key. That is fine, but it does cover up part of you keyboard if you, for example, need to type in a password for a channel. Not a problem, but thought I would at least mention it.).:good:

I'm glad it's working for you I'm working on a complete UI overhaul and that global push to talk was more or less a proof of concept for being able to talk outside of the app. Android has limitations for hardware key interception that won't allow push to talk while the app is in the background, so hopefully people will enjoy this new button. It will eventually be a bar with other options that can be hidden. Thanks so much for testing, I'm glad the ICS/JB fix is working.

never hide softkeys

Hi,
i've tried to do a few searches but can't find anything about SHOWING the soft keys all the time.
See the thing is, this phone is for the mother-in-law and she's 71 so it needs to be as simple as possible. She wants to play games like temple run but doesn't understand the concept of swipe the top to get the home button to show up so I'd like to have the bottom bar always visible, even in immersive mode.
Any ideas please?
Cheers
I should probably include that it's stock 14.6.A.0.368 (this probably needs updating, but I'm looking for how to do that at the moment and confusing myself lol) and is rooted.
Xposed module 'App Settings' - go to the app you want, full-screen>prevent. I think you have to do it for each one. You probably can force it across the board with build prop, but I think the other way is best.
I can cope with that... Is there an easy guide for my firmware version to install xposed? I don't want to brick it again lol
Cheers

Flash this in recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3580244&d=1450386592 Then install this apk - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3383776&d=1435601440 Then open Xposed app and go to 'download' and search for 'app settings'. Note that the first boot after flashing the zip will be long and finish with 'optimizing apps' dialog, which will take several minutes. Make sure your battery level is good.
Always a good idea to backup first.

Oh yeah, and any time you install a new module in Xposed, it won't be active until you reboot.
Absolutely smashing, thanks. I've flashed the zip and now I'm waiting for it to load up, then I'll install the apk and find the module.

Strange... Is the module working in general? Did you check the box in 'modules' screen in Xposed? I tested it on several apps and it was good...
I don't think so... It's ticked and I've rebooted and all that. The Adblocker module I found is working fine. Strange.
Perhaps I'm missing something. Any suggestions please? lol!! It's winding me up big time :/

Are you sure? Reading the description that seems to do the opposite to what I want?
I want the navigation bar to be visible even in full screen mode. The girlfriend's mum can't grasp the concept of swipe to show the navigation and she keeps forgetting when we tell her, so by having it always visible we remove that obstacle

There's a 'blacklist' function which you can apply to chosen apps. I can't say if it will work on your specific game or not. The Xoosed module I mentioned works great for me with Camera, but I guess it didn't work for your game. I think with play store you can return a purchase within 15 minutes or something...
Don't know how I missed that. I'll give it a bash, Many thanks!

Well, after some reading, it seems clear that it is coded into the programming, and you'd have to rewrite the ROM to entirely disable it. From app to app, you probably could decompile and mod the apk so it doesn't call on the function. I did read that Gravity Box from Xposed has an immersive mode toggle, but I can't test it, since GB doesn't work on CM ROM. Check that out.
Thanks for your help so far. I tried GB but it didn't work either. Bloody annoying.
Perhaps another approach would be double tap the power switch to return home? Do you know if something like this exists please?
Thanks again for all the input and suggestions so far.

Hey I just discovered UDN (ultimate dynamic navbar). Install it, go to ssettings>general>special modes. Check 'toggle mode' and uncheck 'hide on outside touch'. The navbar will never go away. The only problem is that it sits Right there over anything else, blocking whatever you might want to touch down there, so maybe not a total fix. How eve, there's also more configurations you can mess with that might at least be an improvement.

I think I tried that as well, but like you say, it gets in the way. It got in the way and I didn't look any more into it. I'll give it a go and look more at it when I get home from work. Cheers.

Thanks for that. Figured since it was released through the beta program as an OTA there still might be early issues... "Slow and janky" clarified that. Doesn't seem there is anything too horrible that doesn't work.
In your opinion could this still be a daily driver? Of course that always depends on what your doing with your phone.

so far the MyATT app crashes every open.
FiSwitch app, widget doesnt seem to work at all.
CustomNavigation bar app opens, but cannot be enabled due to Android version issue (also possible because Google seems to have gotten rid of system ui tuner altogether, or there is a new way you have to enable it that I havent found).
SolidExplorer gives a toast about API compatibility issue, but so far seems to work fine. I did have to delete and re-add cloud storage providers.
Off-hand, those are all I can think of, still have more to go through.
I installed factory images, did full wipe. In the past, when I have installed new OS with images, and deleted the -w (wipe user data flag) there were always issues, so I did clean install.
So far apps such as LightFlow, KWGT, CallFlash, things of that nature seem to be fine.

It's something that was being developed months ago, it makes your device search for devices in the background periodically for potentially COVID-19 infected people.
If someone is infected, they have to report it on their phone and it flags other users around if you're near someone who had/has COVID-19 or not.
It uses Bluetooth

Its a framework. That means, apps sit on top on the frame ... like building a house, you need a base ( frame ) . This " Base" lets others build whatever house they want on top ... the actual "base" does nothing, how do I know... its a framework. if you are so paranoid, stop all you're google, amazon frameworks and see what happens, spoilers, your phone won't work. Next, stop all the frameworks in windows if you use that .. spoilers, it won't work ....then put everything into a box and leave it there

Question Block 13 update?

I just got notified that my pixel 6 pro will update to A13 in two days, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it.
Does anyone know how to block it and stop any future updates? I've already got 'automatic updates' turned off, but that isn't stopping it.
What do I need to freeze, or what command line do i need to run, to clean this up and stop updates, especially A13?
I assume if your phone rooted, automatically updating will fail
It doesn't, and I lose root, that's what I thought last security update— which is why i'm concerned

Yes tap build 7 times for Developer Settings and disable automatic updatea
You could unlock the bootloader (which would require a device wipe) and then reinstall your current build of Android manually. That would be one of the only ways to officially disable automatic updates as well as update notifications.
I don't think that there's any way you'll be able to permanently avoid it. At least one other person who was rooted on Android 12 got the OTA to 13 even though they had automatic updates already disabled and it actually installed successfully - they lost root until they manually re-rooted it, but it was a surprise it updated successfully via OTA.
You may be able to delay it some buy factory resetting and some other things, but it's a big "maybe", and ultimately I don't think there's any way for you to avoid it.

I "think" I've seen 3 instances of where someone was rooted but successfully completed the OTA, although 2 may have been from the same person. Maybe it was even the same person mentioning it 3 times, lol. Not really sure.
Makes me wonder if they removed the pre-OTA block verifications when going from A12 to A13 or just a fluke situation.

I suspect (but pretty obvious) that they have ways of force-pushing updates through despite the automatic update setting (or it's broken in typical Google fashion), but I think it's the former.
Then I believe they made a command decision that the vulnerability is too bad and that they felt they must force it on everyone. Again, given Google's reputation, this could've easily been an accident as well - "who pushed the red button!?!?!?"
And then the further command decision to push over top of modded, or at least simply rooted, devices as much as possible. I wonder what happens in the case someone has truly modified their software more aggressively at the root level. It wouldn't surprise me if it would've still overridden in those cases.
While, of course, those would be questionable actions for them to take (if these are actually true in the first place), I either partially or mostly agree with them, but just on principle, I can't wholeheartedly agree with them. Somewhere in the 40%-99% range.
If true, hopefully this is a very rare occurrence and not going to be how it is from now on. I will wait patiently to observe how things go.
What's the reason for avoiding the update? A13 is a pretty minor update from A12.1. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they should have called it A12.2.

this exactly I also want to know, is there any reason for not upgrading to A13 when coming from A12?
Only thing I could think of is some apps which might not yet work on A13...but thats about it?!

V4A, at least in my case. I'm not updating until its compatible, or I find a better alternative.

I'm concerned about app compatibility, magisk, and how much control I'll lose.
As it is, even on 12, I can't change anything in /system, it's locked RO. I'm tired of not having control over a phone I paid for that's supposedly 'unlocked', but isn't

Compatibility seems remarkably intact, magisk works as intended, and there is no evidence of any change in what control you have.
