will any mhl adapter work? or does it need to be a specific mhl adapter for samsung note 8?

I'm currently using the MHL adapter for S3 and Snote 2 for my Note 8 and works flawlessly. I think in order to works best, you need to plug in with the power adapter too which is a faeture of Samsung's MHL adapters

the power adapter?

Every mhl adapter requires you to plug your charger and micro usb cable into the adapter to provide power to the phone while using the mhl adapter. You have to make sure you purchase an mhl adapter that is compatible with Samsung devices. Samsung uses an 11 pin micro usb/mhl port where as HTC only had a 5 pin. My mhl adapter that I used with all my HTC phones will not work with my Samsung devices.

That is not what you need, that is to convert a non-samsung mhl adapter to work with a Samsung phone or tablet. Just search for Samsung mhl and look for one that says it works with a Galaxy s4 or s3 and it will work with the note 8.

Sorry to revive an old thread. I am in the position of looking for an MHL adapter for my Note 8. Can you share the exact model of the one that you have? I would very much appreciate that.
Thanks.

Question Regarding USB/Hub and HDTV?

Is it possible to connect the S3 to a USB hub via a micro usb to female usb port.
Then connect a usb power supply to Port 1 and on Port 2 connect it to a HDTV.
Will this work properly?
Edit:
Nvm, just did some more reading and found out that the MHL adapter has a micro usb port for charging the device at the same time.

but as I might use it for a film or something longer than 10minutes I would like to keep it charging at the same time.
Monoprice has the micro usb to hdmi for $11. I buy a ton of stuff from them and have never had any problems with any of their products.
FYI. The only MHL adapter that works with the Galaxy S III right now is the one from Samsung. Model EPL-3FHUBEGSTA ($40). It has a 11 pin micro USB connector compared to the 5 pins on all other MHL Adapters. There is also a 5 pin to 11 pin adapter ($10) that will make the older MHL adapters work with the SGS III. Model EPL-FU10BEGSTA.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I did not know and I almost ordered that from Monoprice. I guess I will have to wait because I and not paying $40 for that adapter.

Buy the old adapter for 11 and the new adapter for the adapter for 10. It works now for only 21 dollars instead of 40. :good:

I don't have an old adaptor, so instead of getting an adapter for an adapter (whoaaaa) I'll just wait for the chinese ebay knockoff that works.

Galaxy S III MHL Adapter Supports USB OTG--Work with GN?

The new MHL adapter for the Galaxy S III supports both HDMI and USB OTG simultaneously, according to this article:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
I'm wondering if this means it could be used for USB OTG with a flash drive while charging the phone at the same time--something that's impossible with current adapters and cables. And does it also work with the Galaxy Nexus? Does anyone happen to have the adapter and a GN to test this?

My friend has an S3 and I know the 5 pin MHL adapter we use doesn't work with his because of the pin configuration, so I would assume if he can't get HDMI out using the 5pin, we won't be able to get HDMI out using the 11pin. Of course I am only guessing, but it makes sense to my mind.
I don't see how it could work, to use the HDMI out you need the charger cable plugged in to the MHL adaptor. So where would the OTG cable go?

Looks to me like the standard S3 MHL adapter has a micro USB "charging port". Could be that it could also accept an external drive. I don't have the phone or the cable yet, so I can't test. Maybe somebody who has both could post results?
it's not actually a charging port, it's a power port because apparently it needs more power to output HDMI, i.e. if you don't have the charger plugged in to the vacant port, no HDMI.
Samsung does sell a bunch of dual head micro usb to usb cables.... so maybe you need one of those and they sell this: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-R205UBEGSTA which says it allows you connect drives, keyboards, etc to S3's....
Yeah those work, I actually use this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-2...100-Note-i9220-Nexus-i9250-XOOM-/120894431890
or something similar, but you still can't use HDMI when you use those
you can however plug in keyboard, mouse, usb drive and anything else you want all at once which is cool

only MHL is affected by the pins, usb OTG is not affected by the new layout

Confirmed: Samsung 5 to 11 pin MHL HDTV tip works with any MHL HDMI Adapter

Sorry if this was already posted but I just got the Samsung EPL-FU10BEBSTD (whoever comes up with these names should be shot) MHL 5 to 11 pin adapter.
I tested it on three different generic MHL adapters and it works perfectly. In other words, if you have an existing adapter and don't need USB OTG along with it, save your money and get this thing instead. I bought mine from CCM accessories on Amazon and received it in 2 days for $9.99.

Does everything you'd expect from an MHL adapter, mirror display, Netflix etc...
I'm assuming this is the same thing despite the model number difference?
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EPL-FU10BEGSTA
Got a question, does this adapter has a hook up for charging cable? If yes does it work with the charger plugged either into this or the genetic mhl cable that you hook to the adapter?

No it is just MicroUSB in and MicroUSB out - the power will come from your MHL adapter.

Yes - and MHL adapters don't even work when not powered. In my case, my S3 setup is:
HDMI Cable > MHL Adapter + MicroUSB charger > Samsung 5 to 11 pin adpater > S3.
Thanks for checking. My MHL cable and adapter shipped out today. Can't wait to get them

Official MHL adapter with OTG, how does OTG work in this case?

Hopefully somebody who has htis can shed some light on it.
If you're using MHL hdmi out, the unused micro USB port on the adapter needs to be fed power, correct?
So does that mean that if you're outputting via HDMI that you cannot utilize the USB OTG? Or will you have to use a powered hub to simultaneously drive the HDMI output and the USB OTG peripherals?
I don't think it will work like that. I tried plugging my OTG cable with a powered usb hub into the micro USB port on my MHL adapter. Even without an HDMI cable connected my phone would not detect my wireless mouse and keyboard.
Are you using the official mhl adapter?

Weird, the whole point of Samsung going with the 11 pin was to enable USB OTG. Maybe it doesn't work with the adapter?
I guess I'll find out, the official adapter is in the mail, should be here Thurs.
Of course it wouldn't work with the adapter and an older cable. The adapter is only rearranging a 5pin power cable and hdmi to match the 11pin in the phone. 6 pins in the phone are still not used.
If I remember ill try it with the official S3 adapter later.

i also really want to know if the samsung 11 pin (not adapter) will work with a powered USB hub and OTG ..
I think I saw somewhere that the adapter for the s2 and s3 are different. Don't know much just wanted to throw my 2 cents in

I was wondering if this would work so I won't have to buy a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and just use a USB combo with a powered hub instead:
Official MHL adapter -> hdmi to monitor

This is already known. Same issue when the Galaxy S3 came out. Samsung changed the pin layout and did the same on the Galaxy Note 2. So you will need to buy a new MHL adapter or you can buy an adapter for your current MHL adapter.

Yes the wires are now arranged conversely. You need a new MHL adaptor or fix yours with soldering-iron.
any clue if now the mhl is compatible with camera apps?
