How to connect external hard disk to samsung galaxy nNote II N7100 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi ..
THANKS TO ALL XDA DEVELOPERS !! AND OMEGA ROM !!
This is my 1st post so be nice on comments and warnings
I tried to connect external hard disk to Samsung galaxy note 2 . But after a lot of search I can only get more problems to my search but not any detailed description.
So after a lot of research and study in xda forms and web I found solution
Let's b short and simple
Mentioning this is little imp
!!!…… "I'm jus a human not creator so I don't take any responsibility for damage caused to ur world"………!!!:::
Imp things needed
[*]galaxy note 2 N7100
[*]Must be rooted
[*]External hard disk GB or TB (optional)
usb female 2 female pin
otg cable
any rom or kernal with INT D support
(Ycable )or (usb power box) or (samsung docking)
samsung mobile charger or any usb supported charger with 5.0 v or 2.0 A output
Apps needed or used
Busy box
Paragon Ntfs or Hfs
usb otg helper
root explorer
Most of all little daring
Steps to followed
check u r note 2 is having int.d support or not then proceed
Install apps from GAP store or Apk files
install busy box
install ntfs or otg any ONE of these
{Procedure}
Now tricky part : connect ur hard disk with y cable using( female to female pin )main data transfer cable one end and the other end to note 2 using otg this should be the straight ends now ther wiil b anther male USB connector free end which has to be connectd to samsung usb charger for power supply to hard disk
[Or]
Using micro-B USB cable instead of y cable lot easier (or ) USB power hub much more easier (or) Samsung docking simple and easy to acess
Check whether u r hard disk is getting enough power (if WD the power light will b constant without any bilkng or fluctuation) or simply check the disks inside is running or not if it makes any ticking sound then it is not getting enough power
If it is getting enough power then proceed and open the app NTFS (I USe THIS )
##If using NTFS jus follow screen shots attached
if auto file explore SD cad /NTFS /HD MOUNTEDhere.. if manual u can choose where u can mount ur drive
##If using otg simply connect and use root explorer /system/storage / here u will find mounted device
All this y cable female to female pin otg will cost around 200 rs INR
USB 3.0 power hub may cost 400 INR
Samsung docking too pricy but does the same thing price starting 2000 to 3000 more or less .Its ur pickcbut work done is same
Important precaution s to be followed
Check
rooted or not
int d support
Highly recommended don't start if u don't know what ur doing is worth doing
Important points to be noted :-
"HARD DISK SHOULD NOT CONTAIN ANY PASSWORDS FOR ACCESSING WHILE CONNECTING ""..SIMILAR TO THAT OF "VCD SOFTWARE ON WD HARD DISK" cuzz there is no software for granting access for this type in android
NTFS FORMAT IS RECOGNISED BY ANDRIODS THANKS TO "PARAGON NTFS AND OTG APPS"
[reference for frends who have lot of questions in mind ]
Before asking
'Int.d' please refer xda forms
about usb 3.0 and 2.0 both can b connected
by connecting Y cable to charger the mobile cant b charged while using hardisk .Mayb in Samsung docking it could b charged I don't no to b precise
B most of all to tch specialists and other .the USB is used for only data transfer and power transfer mostly +d-d ie., 5v so mostly no harm by connecting cable to samsung mobile usb charger
""Your mobile juice or charging may decrease more fastly than usual usage don't panic that is not going 2 b permanent once u disconnect ur hard disk it will be back 2 normal ""

So Paragon NTFS and OTG apps are working with Note2. Great.

Making own OTG cable from a generic USB mini/micro cable - Cost Rs 150

Sorry fr startng a new thread, wen so many threads r available showing video proofs of working OTG cable.......bt i reliazed, tht making a own OTG cable s much simpler n can be done without ne cutting or soldering
First d basics -
1. Generic USB cable (For data transfer or charging) is different from OTG cable - IN OTG cable, Pin 4 is shorted wth Pin 5........in essence, Galaxy S 2 is able to differentiate between USB OTG cable thru this pin.....
2. For converting any generic cable to OTG cable, u just need to short Pin 4 with Pin 5 and it will work like a charm.....
3. I have done this using Motorola Micro male to Mini female adaptor - theoretically, u can do this by using any cable which has 5 wires/pins coming from micro plug - cable supplied with samsung shud also be able to do this
4. U can simply test self made OTG wire - on connecting it wth phone, it should show "USB host connected" in status bar even without connecting any flash/pen drive
Now details -
Pin usage - normal Micro B plug (used in galaxy S 2) - uses Pin 1,2,3 and 5 for data/charging. U need to cut open the wire just where micro plug is connected and short pin4 to pin5. Alternatively, u can use an adaptor (like Micro to Mini) and try shorting the wires at outlet. I have done using stapler pin. Its easy and saves u trouble of opening/cutting or soldering any wire. Hope the pics r clear
Male Plug -

I have then attached Micro male-mini female (shorted) adaptor to Mini USB-USB 2.0 and then to female USB-female USB adaptor and finally to Pen drive
I will try to attach a video proof, in case sumone needs it. For indian users, u can get hold of Motorola Micro male to mini female adaptor @ Heera panna in mumbai or Gaffar market in delhi for Rs 150
P.S. - Shorting Pin 4 to Pin 5 to enable OTG mode is not my discovery and i understood it going thru multiple searches and posts on XDA and other sites. Sorry for not linking to those posts
Thats just a nice idea because you don't need to cut or damage one of the adapters.
And a good solution till the original USB OTG cable is in stock.
Thanks.

Excellent works perfect !!! Thank you very much!
Sorry for being noobish, but could anyone explain the difference between OTG and generic? Thanks!
Do ALL SG2's come OTG host enabled??? cause I tried this and doesn't work for some reason.... I've opened up a micro-usb connecter all the way to the plug and soldered 4 and 5 together...still nothing (tried the staple method first ofcourse but I saw that black and the xtra cable were actually internally already connected)

Basic difference between Generic n OTG cable s pin lay out....
Generic helps u connect s2 as slave to PC/laptop n OTG cable helps u connect other USB drives to S2, thus making it a master....Hope it clarifies ur doubt

Any other suggestions??
although some weeks have passed since you posted your question, here's the answer: amazon.com/gp/product/B004ULZD7U/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
works perfectly for my galaxy s2 as well as the huawei media pad. it's even possible to load the slave device by the master. (both ways)
USB OTG Cable even cheap
Hi,
I bought this USB OTG (On The Go) cable online at eBay.in for Rs.115.
I tested this cable with Nokia N8 works fine which is even cheaper instead of making from another cable.
i got a usb otg cable at faizul communications, jagdish market hyderabad,
price - 100 rs.
works with sgs2, and all accessories including pen drives and mouse/keyboard and even game pads

First decide which functionalities u want in the hub...
1. MHL - For HDMI connector ??
2. USB OTG ??
3. Normal USB - Charging and Data ??
I understand that new MHL adaptors (S3,S4) are 11 PIN and thus only 2 of the above 3 can be used simultaneously (MHL-HDMI with Normal USB OR MHL-HDMI with USB OTG)...
U will have to search for the Pin lay out of your phone and whether it supports MHL-HDMI output or not and then can work towards it :good:

Tips and Tricks USB OTG Cable for S3 ( USB Connector )

I bought a original Samsung USB OTG Cable for my Samsung Galaxy S3 from online store ( shopsection.com ) , can anyone post tips and tricks about it.
according to my testing, Most of all USB devices can access
1- Amazing cable, it works perfect in Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note
2- Connect pendrive 2GB, 4GB, 8Gb, 16GB and access files , documents, songs, movies instant from your S3
3- Like to draw anything without C-Pen stylus? connect USB mouse and draw anything u want as like in computer mouse cursor
4- feeling touch to type on touch screen? connect USB keyboard via OTG cable and start typing SMS and Emails.
5- Does your friends running out of battery ?, connect their mobile with their usb data cable to OTG cable and get charged
6- Also if your friend give access for "Mass storage" access his files from his mobile phone
7- want to take instant printout from your S 3, connect printer USB to OTG cable and give a shot
Article from other websites about OTG cable,
- Remote Access your mobile using Data modem
- support PS3 controller
also if anyone has more tips and tricks for this OTG cable, kindly post it. so thrilled to enjoy its benefits.
I heard also Xbox 360 wired remotes work as well
I have a chinese non-oem OTG cable and works fine with pretty much every USB devide I have (usb memories, keyboard, mouse). I havent tried game remotes or a printer.
Not as amazing as the adapter Samsung will be releasing whenever they can be bothered because it will use the full 11 pins and allow MHL and other accessories simultaneously, but like always they take so long releasing accessories people just get pissed off while they waiting.
Yes Micheal 100% acceptable. only advantage for OTG cable was they launched long back after few months from Galaxy SII. But same cable we are using it for Galaxy Note and Galaxy SIII. But we are really worried for Flip Cover launch for SIII. it took nearly 2 weeks time from SIII mobile launch.
There are plenty of local manufacturers releasing case and covers and even OTG cable. only this guy has the original samsung OTG cable in India shopsection.com/item/USB_Host_OTG_Cable_for_Samsung_Galaxy_S_3 for sale with offer price.

You need MHL cable to connect HDMI to Tv and you can't connect over Mass Storage mode to Tv, Car etc because Samsung in their wisdom decided not to include it, and I know iPhone has things like blood pressure and heart rate monitors you can connect but never heard of it on Android, but it's possible to create a driver to connect pretty much anything with a USB port to Android.

The first thing that you need to check is how your thumb drive is formatted. I haven't tried a thumb drive on my SIII yet but on Atrixs I've evaluated they could only interface with FAT thumb drives. NTFS wouldn't work. You should also try a different model of thumb drive, I don't know about the power requirements but it might just be too high.
USB On The Go cable awareness not upto the level. Samsung must advertise about their accessories too as like Nokia. OTG cable is really useful to access files instant. but i wonder why its only suitable for very few models and since Galaxy Y is also has update android firmware.
anybody tried OTG cable other than S III?

I think the external hard drives will only work if you use a usb port multiplier with a external power source. Dont quote me on that though!

I have actually try plugin my external hard drive with 2 headed USB cable, one connects to the USB OTG cable, one end connects to a USB port for power, and it still doesn't work.
It would be nice if it would work though.

USB OTG Cable Doesn't Work Anymore

All the supported devices worked with my Note earlier. My USB storage, a pen drive formatted to FAT32 also mounted well. I had a good time exploring the Note as a cool mini PC connecting my keyboard and mouse until recently.
Now the OTG connector is ONLY detected with a notification saying "USB connector connected" but nothing happens after that. I am aware that power is available across the cable since my brother's Galaxy Ace starts charging and the LED symbol on my Razer mouse lights up but there is no activity on the Ace except charging and my mouse won't work.
I have tried USB Host Utilities and stickmount from d great developer but doesn't that doesn't help but increases my concern.
Has someone faced similar issues? Someone help please..

Does the normal data cable work when you connect to a PC ?
If not then you might need to carefully clean your data port.
Yup that works perfectly fine except for the usual Hardware ID missing error on the PC..

Call me racist but they all look alike to me!
Its probable that the cable is damaged. Just my two cents.
USB On The Go/ OTG not working, help.
I have a note n7000 on ICS 4.0 and am a first time android user, bought the phone a week back.
I tried using an 8gb flashdrive with an OTG cable. it didnt recognize the flashdrive at all, though it showed that a USB
cable has been connected.
Next i tried a 4gb flashdrive. It did recognize it but didnt show it in the "my files" list. notification says "usb storage is
empty or un-recognized format or such"
I installed the "USB host controller " app, that did'nt help. I tried to format the 4gb flashdrive in FAT32 with 1024 cluster
size and quick format mode, that didnt help either. I have attached the screenshots from the app.
i dont wish to loose warranty, and have never fiddled with drivers of android device before.
thanks a lot folks.

Should Work!
I am using the N7100 and I have faced no issues yet...your cable should be fine...if in FAT32, will read automatically...if NTFS, use a program called paragon NTFS...running stock ROM and custom kernel...
otg cable works on note 2....
hello friends,,when i bought note 2 almost two months ago i used same otg cable which i was using on galaxy s2 but after updating note 2 when i attached otg cable it just shows "usb connector connected" and doest not read the flash drive,,i searched a lot on the internet for solution but didn't found anything and then flashed many different roms to check out if there is any problem with the rom,,but same result..so today i bought a new otg cable superior than first one,,so i attached it and it works prefectly,,i have tested flash drive,,keyboard mouse all works smoothly..
So at last i concluded that there is difference in otg cables may be it is in the pins structure of the adapter of the cable,,some of the cables which works on the previous galaxy devices does not works on the current galaxy devices,,so when you choose a otg cable make it confirm it is the latest build which is compatible with your device..
thanx...

The Note II can't output enough power for larger hard drives, so if yours has an external power supply then use it or if it's only powered through USB try using a powered USB Hub. Capacity itself shouldn't be a problem.
It does work!!!

I beg to differ your opinion sir,
I have a Note 2 GT-N7100 i purchased the cable mentioned here, got it very cheap at only 2 $ from a local store.
Anyway I tried and connected everything i could imagine that has a usb plug into my Note 2 and they all worked
The devices I tried are : A mouse, A keyboard, A USB flash-memory and last but not least, my 500 GB external HD and they all worked like a charm!!
The Note 2 is an amazing device!!
attached are the proof of some of the devices mentioned above
NB: the mouse picture is taken from the Galaxy S2 , but it is almost the same for the Note 2

[Q] looking for a OTG cable for my S3

Hello -
I have been looking all over for a cable that will work for what I am trying to do but I just can't find exactly what I need. Maybe I am looking for the wrong cable type?
I am trying to plug my Seagate Portable 4TB SS HDD. into my Rooted Galaxy Tab S3 SM-T820. I dont really understand what cable type
I need when I look at my Tab. I guess it is a Mini USB Type 3.0 - C ?? The only cable that I have that fits it is the one that came with the tab.
Am I looking for a Mini USB C 3.0 ( adapter to a ) Solid State USB 3.0 ? ? ? - Please look at the picture to see what type of connection my HDD has.
It is 2 connections in 1 . I assume part of the cable is for power and the other side of the cable is the transfer side. ?
So I guess my main question is: What cable do I need ?? ALSO ... If I cant hook up to the Portable SS HDD, then how about just hooking up my Tab to my 3.0 USB slot
on my desktop?
Thank you !!
You have three concerns here.
1. Power.
2. Cable.
3. Compatibility.
*If* the tablet can power the external drive, and the external drive is compatible, a usb c to micro usb 3.0 cable will be all you need.
If the tablet and the drive are compatible and the tablet can't provide enough power to he drive, you will need a powered hub...tablet connects to the hub, the hub connects to power and the external drive.
as far as compatibility, you are *probably* fine, as long as the drive is formatted FAT or FAT32. If it's NTFS or something besides EXT, you are most likely hosed.
Good Luck!
Buy Type C adapters that are designed for Mac books. they work great with Tab S3. Just make sure it is USB 3.0 or above.
