Archos TV Connect Root (101XS set top box) - Gen10 Android Development

By any chance could one of the wizards here who do root versions of the stock Archos 101xs ROM do a version for the TV Connect as well which is a set top box Archos have released using the same hardware and a similar ROM.
The 4.1.5 firmware for the TV Connect is on the Archos download page and look under g10 tablets to see the TV Connect listing.
It's really nice hardware for a set top box but Archos have greatly limited what you can do with no root support, XBMC cant run full screen but their own media player does, when I asked Archos to support XBMC they said no

Need it also for my 101xs thanks

Archos tv connect root needed
+1 for searching a way to root the atc.
Tried running srsroot with no success. I wonder if it's possible to install an ics 101xs rom, root and then upgrade...
Can somebody find an interest in providing a solution? This is a great device with an annoying system bar that should go away in most applications considering it has a hardware controller.
How does the archos media player manages to hide the bar?
Thanks

How come there is nothing for this one ?
It is an excellent device, ... cheap and very good performing setup. I do not know how come there is no unroot for it. Maybe it didn't sold enough?
I'm eagearly waiting for some root news
Thanks to all,
Marko

It would be really easy to root it with sde installed. Should be the same as the other gen10 devices.
I am currently working on an openaos boot menu that supports chroot and kexec to boot different kernels or just chroot official archos firmware.
I am waiting for archos to update the GPL repo (boardfiles for gen10 devices are missing) so that we can build our own kernel. I will add unionfs support so we can have root with an overlay filesystem. Update of the GPL code is promised to be any week now. I hope any week will be soon .
When all goes well the openaos bootmenu will support gen9 and gen10 devices. Atleast the TV connect, because that one I own.

Progress on rooting?
Hello,
Recently purchased this device, I have to say, it's brilliant. With Netflix, there is no statusbar visible..
However, still the need to root, because I would like to run SAMBA server.
So, is there any progress on the process of rooting this device? Earlier somebody mentioned "sde" but I don't know what that means...
Thanks in advance,
Greetings from Holland...

Will likely never happen.
Archos have given up the box I think, given the flaws it has it's not so appealing to other users either
1) The bluetooth gamepad mouse cursor drifts when stationary
2) No manual HDMI resolution settings, it's audio detection is very unreliable with some TV's.
3) No audio pass-through settings
I'm going to wait for the genuine AndroidTV (former GoogleTV) boxes blessed by Google later this year, these Android tablet boxes are just too poorly made and thought out.

I'm trying .. for now I'm trying to unpack the original firmware
I have a friend who helps me with linux
in the end I just have to insert three open files and close
install ( downgrade ) your device to android ICS - Archos Firmware 4.0.26 ;
install SDE recovery ;
install Archos Firmware 4.1.5 - Android JB - Root version !
I'm using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417057
I have a little experience in modding
I made 2 rom one for xperia and one for archosgamepad
. aos is not simple, however, there is a guide for all
i use a nebula batch a replace 101 firm with tvc rooted

How to boot into recovery on Archos TV connect
Pull the powercord.
Press the powerbutton and insert the power cord.
Let go of the powerbutton and press it shortly once more.
Now there should appear a white screen with the LUDO recovery on top.
NOTE:
to navigate through the recovery menu you need a USB keyboard. Use the up and down arrows to highlight an entry. Return or enter with select that menu item.
to enable SDE you need to install SDE gen10 which currently only list the "ARCHOS 101 XS" but also works for the TV connect. You will loose the ability to play DRM content.

the.master.asd - have you succeeded? you detail the process but I don't understand if you made it or just trying to complete?
I think it's a good box, worth rooting. Anyway, it's a challenge.

Yes, you can install gen10 SDE. http://dev.openaos.org/wiki/Gen10Resources

What will the SDE give me? Is it rooted?
The only thing I really need is to get rid of the system bar at the bottom.

You can not just flash the image. You can only flash an initramfs and kernel. What you can do is make an initramfs that uses chroot to start the image. Then flash the original archos kernel and your own initramfs. Right now you can not build your own gen10 kernel, because the git tree from archos is still broken for gen10. There are missing board files.
Atleast that is what I would do, it will be the safest way. It would be very hard to brick your device. I didn't look how nebula_neagra does it and what code is in the batch file.
Be carefull when using code from others, if they mess with recovery and your recovery gets deleted somehow you got a brick.
divx118

I understand
I hope .. the hardware is the same ... same software
*
I did not experience the kernel ..
I can only hope that Archos has done a copy / paste on the two devices

the only difference is the bluetooth auto pairing with the controller and size of integrated memory (4/tvc 16/101xs)
second you ... is possible to put the kernel 101 on TVC
I think this is the only way ... or wait for archos!
I do not know but wait ...
are decided! I kill my tvc!

Mine also hangs at the boot logo. Didn't have SDE or alternative firmwares installed. Just got it friday.
Please, please, please wait.
The update is done in 3 steps. The second step only shows the Archos logo but seems to need up to 5 minutes or more before finishing.
Don't restart, shut down or remove usb cable (this is only for have enough power while updating).

2) From which system do you update? (Normaly 4.0.7 stock, unmodfied, ...).
3) SEDed/rooted or not?
4) How you try to install the upgrade? (From System settings, from PopUp question, uploading file from pc)
5) What did you do?
6) Which visual steps happened while upgrading?

I have an 101 G9 Turbo 8GB 1.5 Ghz. Updated from 4.0.7 to 4.0.24 via on device archos update. Didn't had any custom rom or SDE installed. Hangs in 2nd upgrade step (reboot after initial reboot with progress).
Curiously I'm not being offered the latest update from system settings Archos updater (101 G9 Turbo - on stock 4.0.7) - even if I manually view 'System Updates'
Perhaps, because of issues others are experiencing, Archos have pulled this firmware so the auto-update feature is no longer available?
I think I'm happier waiting until I'm advised of an update.
Also, I can't resist commenting on how this is the strangest version number yet!

HI !
I think the problem is the following :
- all those who have installed the official version SDE must first reformat the device before applay the new update 4.0.24 !
Device 101 Turbo 1.5 1024ram
Official SDE activated
From original 4.0.7
Flash In the recovery with reformat device
Flashing complete as always with progress bar. Done. And thats all. Game over.

I bricked my tablet playing around with it too much, but before I did, I happened to back up most of the NAND partitions but not all - I omitted the empty ones that were full of FF's. I think maybe I can restore it if I get the partitions right.
Would someone please do a:
cat /proc/partitions
And let me know what the output is?

Thanks for the quick response. So CM9 won't work? Like for the 7in Trio Stealth
No, not until someone makes a custom build for us. I doubt that will happen unless Trio or the actual manufacturer releases a stock ROM. Without a stock ROM, we have no emergency backup if something doesn't work.

Not exactly. I have already extracted all the partitions, dissected the bootloader, and have made a custom recovery with rooted adb and other utilities. It still uses the stock recovery app though. Not CWM.
I have a CWM recovery from another very very similar device and am close to merging the two recoveries together. I want to rebuild and flash the boot image for the device also so I can use root adb there as well.
I do a kernel for the galaxy blaze 4g, so I have a full environment set up for extracting and rebuilding.
One note, always get a good recovery with root adb before messing with the boot image. That way, you can always flash a known good one from recocery if the one you're trying fails to boot.
My current method of extraction and flashing is dd, which is not at all forgiving and has the potential to brick the device if you mistype the command.

Yep, I know all about bricking with DD! I was able to extract/backup using dd, but I was unable to use my backups because I used cat to install an incompatible recovery which resulted in a brick which would neither boot to OS nor boot to recovery. I was forced to use LiveSuit to flash another A10 ROM and then found none of my dd backups could work because a LiveSuit flash sets up the NAND partitions with sizes specific to that ROM - none of which matched the sizes of the Trio ROM so cat restore would fail.
Anyway, that will be great if you can get CWM or something working. A custom ROM would be great. Something about the stock ROM makes it unusually laggy.
also waitin for a rom-- feel like even after root it is a bit sluggish

It is really laggy. Seems like I/O to me, but I could be mistaken.
Has anyone had any luck with this? This tablet is basically worthless without a new ROM... incredibly slow. It always asks to wait / report / close every app.
I have a working rooted recovery with all the fixin's, but haven't tried throwing cwm on it yet or created a flashing script to make it foolproof yet. Honestly haven't had time. I also permanently rooted the boot image so adb runs as root. Same delivery problem.
If I had a complete hardware list down to the exact parts in it then I could build a device tree for it and get CM on it, as there are a ton of similar devices. Again, an issue of time

Slidepad 704CET JB 4.2.2

CAUTION: USE THIS ROM AS YOUR OWN RISK.......Be sure you have the official rom in case it is not working for you. It appears that even though you have the same tablet Reference, depending on when you buy it, hardware might be a bit different and most likely you will take the risk of having a unusable Touch screen or wifi...
It works for me on my SP704CET bought in France. (I use LSMOD and here the loaded driver: mxc622x, rtl8150, mcs 7830, qf9700, asix, sun5i_csi, gc0308, camera, cedarx, mali, gsl1680, gt811, byd693x,ZET622X, ssd253x, ft5x_ts)
Hi all,
If anyone is interrested in J.B.4.2.2 for Memup SlidePad 704 CET (Only CET, I did not test on 704 CE.
I can post the rom image created... (I will post it later on tonight)
Leave me a private message if you need it.
Content of the ROM
- Rom basically design for Manta13
- Your device will have MID13 as name (No more CET704)
- Jelly Bean 4.2.2
- Fast rom (Menu and all are way faster than 4.1.1 original firmware)
- CWM mod recovery working out of the box
- Root device with Play store.
This ROM come as east country language first, you need to go to setting icon, the language (Icon with a White A letter) and the first option will be language, select yours.
to check you table model, look on the back of the table, even if on the back it says 704CE, you need to look at the white sticker that will say if it is a CE or CET.
As usual, to flash the image, go to boot loader and use livesuite 1.7.
Procedure on the SP704CET with livesuit:
- completly turn off the tablet, unplug cable
- start livesuite and select the downloaded image file
- keep the VOL- button pressed and plug the usb cable
- without releasing the VOL- button press the Power button 6 times.
- You should hear windows sound saying a USB device has been plugged
- if windows request it, install the driver from Livesuitefolder\usbdriver
- Livesuite should automatically start the flashing process.
- when prompted, "Format device" press YEs. (It might take a minute)
- When it s 100% you tablet should reboot.
Done.

Note: I did not invent anything, thanks to the good work of MANTA team members. I just found out this rom works, I just had to modify the touchscreen drivers and idc files.
Cheers
I managed to create an other rom:
link:
Linked removed, this rom is bogus. Use the 1st one, i will try to update it again when i get back
Same version as the previous one with:
- Change to build.prop to match the tablet name 704CET (previous rom was detected as MANTA MID13, from the originial rom)
- Modified boot animation
- added some JellyBam tweak and application (if needed you can installed them from the apk files located in /system/app)
- Add Jellybam static and dynamic wall paper
- other small modifications
Let me know if you like it.
Small hick, you will need to reinstall firefox, the version I add to the rom is not working after first boot
go to /system/app and install jellybam launcher etc...
I hope you will like it, this is only my second rom cooking
Cheers
Guys,
Can you let me know what do you think of this rom? any customization idea I might integrate in a newer version?
Also let me know if that works for you..
if someone has a 704CE and can test the rom.... I can make another verison for 704 CE if you letme know the driver you need (Use an original rom, install any terminal emulator and run lsmod and post the result, just the loaded module names.)
Thanks.

2 thing comes to my mind. First, try to restore with the original firmware first, make sure it, works. Then try to reapply the rom ( use the first one i post, i found out the second one is bogus and my tablet is restarting by herself from time to time.
From the screen shot it looks like your tablet doesnot have same nand mapping as mine. Try the first rom and letmme know. Cheers

You can read the first post of this thread, basically no problem, you can do it whenever as you have to switch to Bootloader mode.
It will replace your current rom and delete everything you have on the tablet.

you can use the Faaast JB custom rom with the correct driver
Hi, I cannot test this rom on 704CE as I do not have this tablet anymore. Also, this rom is for 704 CET so it will not work on CE. This is a driver issue... so the rom should install fine but you might have no TOuchscreen or no Wifi.....
If you know about replacing a driver in Android, you might want to try it (make sure you have the original rom just in case)
I manage to do this driver thing on my 704 CET tablet and it works well. you can help yourself with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42274265
you can even use this rom (Fast jelly bean custom rom) and download the needed driver... (For your information, I have tested this fast JB rom on my 704 CET with the appropriate driver and it works fine, and it is super fast) . If you want to know the driver use on your tablet, run a adb shell and type lsmod (You will have a list of loaded/used driver.)
My advice, if you dont know how to use adb command, do not try it.
I hope this will help.
Best regards.

[ROOT] [GUIDE] (OFFLINE) OTADelusion Online Root for Asus FonePad 7 / K00E / ME372CG

If you wish to follow the instructions in this post, you agree that -
* Your warranty is void.
* I do not offer any guarantees that this will work or that it won't cause any
bad side effects.
* You alone are responsible for any damages or other issues that may arise
directly or indirectly because of this.
This has undergone basic testing on multiple devices running supported ROMs, but
again, there are no guarantees. Use it at your own risk.
In particular, OTA updates have not been tested on rooted devices.
Introduction
What Is This?
The FonePad 7 has a very secure stock ROM that is not vulnerable to any known exploit. But fortunately for us, Asus introduced their own vulnerability in it, which we can take advantage of. This is a guide that will help you root your FonePad 7 using that vulnerability.
How Does It Work?
Overplayed, Cool-Sounding Version
OTADelusion exploits multiple critical security vulnerabilities in the over-the-air update mechanism employed by the FonePad 7 -
The update delta packages are delivered to the device through an unencrypted medium.
The device can be configured to use any DNS server and it does not verify DNS query responses.
The package verification process relies on an asymmetric key-pair whose private key is compromised.
A man-in-the-middle attack is performed while downloading an OTA update by forcing the device to use a rogue DNS server which directs the device to connect to a rogue web server. This web server serves malicious update packages with forged cryptographic signatures. These update packages are designed to install a permanent backdoor in the device, allowing the user full access to it.
Down-To-Earth Version
Someone at Asus forgot the 'S' in 'HTTPS'
Someone at Asus forgot to replace the test Android signing key with their own
1 + 2 = Pwnage
What Do I Need To Use It?
A FonePad 7 running a supported version of the stock ROM (check the section below for a list of supported versions)
A working Wi-Fi connection (this will NOT work on 2G or 3G)
Supported ROM Versions
Go to Settings -> About tablet and check the "Build number" field
3.2.2 - NOT supported. Upgrade to 3.2.4
3.2.4 - Supported (WW and TW)
5.1.6 - NOT supported. I need volunteers to help me test.
5.2.2 - Supported (WW)
5.2.5 - NOT supported. May be added in the future. Check this thread for updates.

Installation Instructions
Follow these steps -
Read the disclaimer at the top of this post.
Make sure you're connected to a WiFi connection, NOT 2G/3G.
Go to Settings -> About tablet -> System Update and check for updates.
When you see the update prompt, select "NO"
Go to Settings -> Apps -> scroll to the "All" tab -> CMClient
Press the "Force Stop" button
Press the "Clear Data" button
Repeat the above steps with DMClient in the Apps list
Go to Settings -> WiFi -> long press on your network -> Modify Network and follow these steps -
Set IP Settings to "Static"
Note down the values of DNS 1 and DNS 2 somewhere.
Set DNS 1 to <snip>
Make DNS 2 blank
At this point, your Internet connection will stop functioning correctly. This is intended and temporary.
Repeat step 3. If it shows an error, reboot and repeat this step.
Make sure you get an update called "OTADelusion".
Download and install the update.
After reboot, go back to WiFi settings and restore the previous values of DNS 1 and DNS 2.
You now have root. Enjoy! But also be careful - there is currently no way to de-brick this device if you screw up.

Status
Running an update server costs actual money, so I won't be able to keep it running indefinitely. I expect to be able to keep it running through 2014 at least, but there are no guarantees. It can go offline at any time. The address mentioned may also change at times. This post will be updated if that happens. Server taken down because there is now an offline method.
Current Server Status: Offline
Thanks for the hard work man, hope you are able to solve the other versions as well. :good:
Hey, just a thinking. If Asus can update the "update" app, maybe you can too, and then send any updates (and modification) you want, no?
If it's possible, we have a big posibility in here i think

It's certainly possible, but a much cleaner solution would be to get a working recovery. The bootloader is locked, but it looks like it's not encrypted. There may be a way to make it accept a custom recovery.
But we need someone who's willing to take the risk of possible bricking and test the recovery on their device.
I think that it could be a good idea to open one of our devices, to see if there's some JTAG (or thing like that) to have a fully trustable backup option.

It hasn't been tested yet. I would suggest you don't, at least until somebody else confirms that it works.
I do suspect that there is some code in the OTA package that triggers a ROM verification in the bootloader, but I'm not sure.
Either way, if somebody's willing to take the risk, let me know. I can make a modified update package that should reduce the risk of bricking.
Hi, Dr. Psycho
Thank you for your quick reply.
I am using 5.2.2 firmware, so need to waiting for next rooting opportunity..
BTW, after rooting, if can't download upgrading package automatically, is there any way to flash the package manually (if i can download it from somewhere)?

The only way is to do what I'm doing with this guide. You'll need to run a fake DNS server and a web server and fool the tablet into downloading your package. If you're on the latest version of the stock ROM, you'll need to either patch the DMClient app or install a self-signed CA certificate (not through Settings, you'll need to copy it to /system).
This thread has a lot of information for those interested, especially in the last ten or so pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514714
EDIT: Just realized you might talking about official updates. Those will be downloadable and installable, but we don't know if it'll work. It might brick your device.
What I wrote above was for custom mods.
This will all become much easier if we get a working recovery.
Yes, I mean official ROM upgrading after rooting. Sorry for the confusing.
I am waiting for Android 4.4, I don't know when Asus can release it for ME372CG. I don't want rooting affect ROM upgrading in the future.
Your answer is quite clear, thanks!

Thanks! working great here
I noticed that some JP (as opposed to WW and TW) FonePad 7 users are trying to use my server to root. The JP version isn't supported yet (I didn't even know it existed). I can add it if someone with the JP version could help me get some values from their device. It'll only take a couple of minutes. Send me a private message if you're interested.
To check if you're using the JP version, go to Settings -> About tablet and check the "Build number" field. It should say "JP" somewhere in the middle.
Botto00 rooted the original Fonepad and made it Flash capable. There are several Flash browsers (Photon, Flashfox, Puffin), but because the Flash stream is redirected it's not a good viewing experience. I was wondering If you had any plans to incorporate Flash in your rooting method? I've already taken advantage of your root and maybe it's too late anyhow.

If I did come up with patches or ROMs, already having root would't be a problem at all. It shouldn't be too hard to make an app that instructs the bootloader to flash a package like DMClient does. Even if it turns out to be difficult, with root access, I can easily hijack the update-checking mechanism with a self-signed CA certificate and a web server, similar to how we're achieving root right now.
I did in fact have plans to make a recovery or at least an app that would act like a minimalistic recovery and let you flash recovery packages. The problem is, I'd need either a test device or a daring volunteer. And time too - I don't have much of that right now.

I quite understand time limitations working on stuff like this - I think everyone appreciates the time and effort you've spent on rooting Fonepad 7.
I followed the procedure in the link. Unfortunately, it doesn't work... maybe that fix is for machines that still support Flash.
Would I dare to volunteer? Hmm... now that I've got root I don't think I would risk it.

USB OTG
Hi, i know this is not the right tread to ask but since there is not forum about our tablet i'll ask here. I have a fonemap 7 ME372GC the 4 GB version (witch by the way doesn't appear on Asus page) and i'm not able to use usb OTG. Is this not possible on our tablets or does mine have something wrong? I have 5.22 rom version andoid 4.3. I use an OTG cable witch is working on my HTC One
Thank you for your help
Let's root it again
Hi Dr. Psycho,
I just got a Asus fonepad 7 model: k00E (ME372CG) and I will put some more data about this device:
- Firmware version: 54.2F
- Android version: 4.2.2
- Baseband version: 1338G_1.12.0_0913
- Kernel version : 3.4.34-00006-gc3b491f
[email protected] #1
Fri Sep 13 21:24:31 CST 2013
- Build number: JDQ39.WW_epad-V3.2.1-20120913
000053_201307241030
It seems as this is the older version of the build then 3.2.4 but it is well WW.
Should I upgrade to version 3.2.4 (and can you explain me how to do this but still to avoid ASUS upgrading to even newest version) or may I try to update this "OTADelusion" update directly with this "old" build number following the instructions ?
And is there any risk of bricking my device with rooting following this method as you stated that there is no way to de-brick Asus fonepad 7 yet ?
Or is there any other (older and safer) way to root this older build version except this "OTADelusion" ?
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !

Yes we can provide and test it
Can we discuss about this in telegram group

Sounds very interesting.. What are the advantages/possible downsides of this OS?
The main advantages it isn't Android. Only use base libs and hal from android part.
Its purely based on Linux. Apps are native, or u can write it using QML.
U dont send statiscic if u dont want and u can control it.
U control whole system via swipe gestures (it was there earlier than in Iphone)
Different UI and feels conected with using it.
The main disadvantage for someone can be impossibility to launch android app (rom need to be stable and get permision to access Store, from where u can install aliendalvik - app for launching android apk)

The main disadvantage for someone can be impossibility to launch android app (rom need to be stable and get permision to access Store, from where u can install aliendalvik - app for launching android apk)

as far as i know, sailfish os could run android apps natively. anyway, good initiative, fingers crossed
We want it
I'll be happy to help porting it blind (can't find mine atm lol, but it is around somewhere) until I either find my phone, or until it gets to hard to do blind. I'll need your help though, can someone who is running lineage 14.1 on their Montana get me a list of partitions and their names? That's an important step to get the boot image going, almost all the other work has already been done by kayesk.
Code:
ls -l /dev/block/platform/*/by-name/
ls -l /dev/block/platform/*/*/by-name/
ls -l /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/
One of those three commands should return a list, which is all I need to get the HAL build going. Oh, yeah, just in case, send me the output of all three commands. I think it should work both via adb and a terminal emulator on the phone, not too sure.
Oh yeah and as a disclaimer this is my first sailfish port, and first xda post in general, so good preconditions!
Is there anyway we can dual boot it. If so I would love to test it out!!
