Did Otterbox Really Drop The Ball On The Defender? - Galaxy S III Accessories

I currently have a razr maxx wrapped in a defender. I have a few other cases, but the defender is my favorite. (I've never actually dropped it, so i can't speak for the actual drop protection) I'm getting ready to get an s3, so I figured I would get a defender for it as well. But many reviews claim that otterbox dropped the ball on the s3 defender. People who have used Otterbox before, say that the s3 case isn't the normal Otterbox quality they've come to know. Such as light drops causing the screen to break. Screen protector is very poor. And phone doesn't fit properly. Many claim that the silicone stretches. But this is to be expected with every Otterbox case and their customer service has always been top notch. So that doesn't bother me. Basically, I'm asking people that have experience with the s3 defender, is it really that bad? Is it of lesser quality than my other defenders?

They didnt just drop the ball. They burried it. Get ballistic sg max or bodyglove toughsuit. Both are better than the ottercrap. Ive had them all

I forgot to mention that I contacted Otterbox this week and asked if there had been any revisions to the s3 defender since it's release, and they claimed they have improved it.

I've lost a little faith in otterbox. I've had the commuter case for almost a year and got a couple replacements and the quality has gotten bad. The rubber and the shell don't fit together like older cases. I know this has nothing to do with the defender but I just wanted to throw it out there.

If the s3 defender truly is a weaker case, I may get the ballistic hardcore. It offers the same style case as the defender, but maybe better quality.
Sent from my Motorola RAZR MAXX using Tapatalk 2

I've had the defender case on my s3 for a little over a month now and have only one issue, the screen protector. I've used defenders on other phones and I would say the s3 version is the best I've had. The only issue I had with the other phone cases was the silicone becoming really lose fairly quickly. The silicone in this case has stayed pretty much in the same shape it was new, and I take it off every couple of days (I work in a factory grinding steel parts so metal shavings tend to get between the screen protector and screen). The problem with the protector is it sits off the screen towards the bottom of the display, and it causes miss taps, and sometimes false double taps. I've gotten use to pressing a little harder, especially using Swype, so now I hardly notice it. 2 days ago bought my fiance a defender and her screen protector is perfect so, maybe Otterbox has improved the design or, maybe I got a "bad" one, idk.

I will probably never buy otter box again! I've only had the phone 6 weeks and I've already taken the horrible screen (dust collector) off, and the thin rubber below the home key doesn't sit flat.
They didn't just drop the ball. They didn't get dressed to play!
I'm looking for a replacement, but the experience has me nervous to throw more money around.

You should look at the ballistic hardcore. It's the same design as the defender. But hopefully better quality.

Just watched a couple videos / read reviews. The ballistic sg max and kraken cases look better than otter! The difference seems to be the outer silicon vs inner. The outer silicon gets beat up really fast!
The ballistic does get good reviews! One guy talked about camping with it many times. I'm a machinist by day, and I go camping a lot...
The screen protector of the ballistic seems to cup the phone better, so perhaps it wouldn't dust up as bad???
The otterbox armor series looks promising, but it's hard to trust the name now.
But while I'm looking, I'm also looking for one that covers the camera. Not sure if it exists though.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Based on what I've read, the otterbox armor doesn't get great reviews. Because of all the gaskets and plugs to make the case waterproof, the speakers and mic are muffled. It shouldn't allow any dust inside the case though since it's waterproof.
If I'm not mistaken, the ballistic hardcore has covers for the camera lens and flash.

Armor has been mixed reviews. Most complaints were about sound quality. And the hard core does cover the camera.

Trident Aegis vs Otterbox Commuter case

Ok I like how the commuter case is somewhat slim and it maintains the original form factor of the phone giving it a lower profile but giving it great protection. I also like how the Aegis has more options for color although it looks a little thicker. Which one should i go for?
I like the defender personally
I have a commuter case I'm selling if your interested? Pm me for details

I have had the commuter for a couple of months and it is a great case. I've dropped my inc2 a couple of times with no ill effects. The only complaint I might have is that the headphone jack is a little recessed, so a 90 degree plug doesn't work too well, but a 45 and a straight plug work just fine. Pretty minor complaint.
I like that the seal of the case is enough that I don't get crap built up around the edge of the screen and in the ports like tends to happen with cheap cases.
I use an invisible shield brand screen protector (the only kind I will use - lifetime warranty and no bubbles! Harder to put on...).
If you look on Amazon, you can get the case for about 1/2 price or less, and the shield for the same amount. Including shipping, it came to less than 40 for my setup.
I use the commuter. Without any screen protector. I just love the feeling of the screen. Nothing getting in the way ya know? It is gorilla glass, but take your chances of your own accord.

I had a blue Aegis case I loved it at first then crap would always get behind the screen protector that the case has and then the corners started breaking and not clipping together anymore, I am back to zagg and cheap hybrid case this case I can't complain about http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-6350-IN...ccessories&hash=item1c1bcbd6b4#ht_1789wt_1037 I have mine in red is all. I just ordered a otterbox commuter though so I have high expectations for the otterbox. if not ill go back to my ebay hybrid case. it isn't rubbery it is hard inside but soft to touch on outside so it can slide on not snap together.

I am also tied between the Commuter and the Trident Aegis since my Incipio SILICRYLIC case broke..by looking at the Aegis pictures, it looks like it covers up the Notification LED for sure, and it looks close to the front-facing camera..Is this a problem for any of the owners?

Commuter
I bought the Otterbox Commuter from Newegg, and so far I like it. It slips out of your pocket really easily because the back is slippery, more slippery than the back of the phone in my opinion. I wish the silicon was tighter on the phone, but it is still tighter and a better case than my old incipio.
I wouldn't get the trident I just took mine off and threw it in the trash after busting 3 of the belt holsters and having to constantly put the thing back together. I ordered a seido off of amazon.
The Commuter felt too slippery for me. I always felt like my phone was going to slip out of my hands unless I used two hands.

Good Case for $15-20~ish

Hi everyone. I got my phone around 3 months ago and I've been sporting this $2.50 case I found online. It's good, but doesn't offer the protection I need. I'm looking for a better case that isn't too expensive. So far I'm considering these...

Any recommendations? Thanks.
I had the actual ballistic case like that. It will protect it from falls but i work in construction and everyday i got home i had to take the phone out the case and clean them both bc the case gets dust inside to easy. Ive had seidios tridents ballistics and otterboxes for numerous phones. Ive pretty much come to realized the only case thats gonna offer full protection is one with a built in screen protector like a otterbox defender or ballistic hc. Others do offer good drop protection but they just let to much dust inside the phone

The actual ballistic is a little out of my range, as is the defender :/. But I've heard the trident aegis is good at resisting dust.

The Trident Aegis is a great case and offers great protection against drops and dust. You can find it on eBay for about $20 with shipping. You can't go wrong with the otterbox commuter but that's gonna cost you about $27 on eBay shipped. If cost is a big factor go with the Trident. You get more bang for your buck. Its a premium case at a great price.
I love my Trident but I ordered the otterbox commuter just because I'm an otterbox fanboy

I just got that same exact case yesterday and its a steal! Feels great while holding phone and not cheap looking at all. I remember paying 35+ for a trident ageis case on my old mt4g and that is basically what this case is.
Also ordered couple screen protectors and the case does a good job of keeping protector snug so no dust gets in. I'm very impressed and I usually hate rocking my phone anything but naked lol

I have a very good news for you.
You can get Seido cases for dirt cheap.
here is why.
Seido makes OEM ( store brand) cases for Bestbuy sold as platinum series.
The surface case. is best buy model call STC21SB. list as 34.99
but if you search 'STC21SB' on ebay, store liquidators are always getting rid of them under 10.
this method can be apply to any phone.. just search your phone in best buy, get the model number of Seido case, and get it on ebay.
I think last time i got one... 8.99 shipped including holster.
I'm using a thick tpu generic case I got on Amazon for 6 bucks it is amazing and looks alright to...... dropped my phone many times it saved it every time even threw it on to a tile floor as demonstration and it feels amazing in the hand cause it's textured

I have a black casemate. I liked it better than the otter boxes, easier to grip and feels more sturdy, IMO.
Looks like this one,
http://www.amazon.com/Case-Mate-CM0...38Q8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334131116&sr=8-1
I got the Seidio Active case a few months back and it's been through a lot of falls and it hasn't gotten a single scratch on the case or the phone. It even makes a nice solid thud when it hits the ground so I know it's absorbing the impact. I got it off of Amazon (not sure if you could get it cheaper).
Personally, I have the ballistics one I got for 17$ on Ebay and i'm satisfied.

Looking for a case with a balance of protection and thinness

Hey guys,
I had bad luck with my Rezound (5 replacements), so I talked to Verizon and they're sending me a certified Galaxy S3 instead (exchanged phones). I read up on the GS3 though and have heard that the glass is really brittle and will crack/break if you drop it. Well lucky me, I have dropped my previous phones more times than I can count. Despite all the problems I have had with my Rezound, the screen was surprisingly resilient. I have gotten nothing more than scratches to the screen and dent marks where the side of the phone hit the road.
Most of my past drops have been either falling out of my pocket when I'm walking, getting out of my car, or slipping out of my hands when I take it out of my pocket. So now I'm definitely worried about my GS3. I've been looking at many different cases, and I think my top choice so far are the DBA cases:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ANI712
They seem to be raved about over in the DBA thread, and it looks quite protective, yet slim. They remind me a lot of the commuter series from Otterbox, only that the inside layer is TPU instead of silicone. The only thing that worries me is that if I drop it, the front of the case doesn't raise the screen as high as it does on the Otterbox.
I like a protective case, but after the Commuter, (on my fat Rezound) I really didn't want to add to the thickness. Can you guys recommend me a slimmer case that will protect me from 3-5 ft drops?
Thanks!
Theres a few out there, Urban Armor Gear, Ballistic SG, Ballistic Life Style, I have the seidio surface right now but I wouldnt rely on it for multiple hi drops. Ive dropped it a couple times from bed height without a scratch on it tho.
PS, i ordered the new release for ballistic, called the every1 case, ill get back at u with info next week.

I'm really liking the Urban Armor Gear. What would be more protective, the Urban Armor Gear or the DBA case? Basically both are the same, TPU inner layer with a hard shell covering it, except the UAG is a hybrid (1 piece) while the DBA case has two pieces. They look the same in bulkiness too but what's to be determined is their protection.
What do you guys think?
Honestly the urban armor case would be the wise decision. But i like to clean my phone once and awhike the case was a bit a pain to take off because of it concave shape, so i got myself the rokform case. I like it because i dropped it several times at different speeds and it survive so far. Plus having the magnet works for me and the sbeam does work without fail. And having that built in socket for mounts and ect. Saves me money on car mounts , and using it at a dock in my room. Rokform is my decision im glad i chose.
Asian Powaa!?!?!?!?!?

This Seidio case is the one I use. I've dropped it several times, and it has a few nicks and scuffs on it. Love it, though, as it is very durable, and seems to maintain its fit very well.
Also, the white/black case looks really nice with my white SGS3.
I use an Aduro hardshell case with kickstand, it's awesome. I've dropped it plenty of times and not a scratch on it!
Do you use any cleaners on your Defender? I have run into problems with using plastic cleaners (even good ones like Plexus!) with some phone cases where it allows it to become too soft and stretches it.

Me too. I even somehow cracked the shell part and they sent me a new one. I haven't opened it yet.
Stretched out cases are a problem in the materials i think. I've saw it on my Captivate, Inspire, and now S3. But they keep replacing, so I'll keep using. I haven't really saw or heard of a sturdier case, short of the new Armor series.
i've always used case-mate's "tough case" on my galaxy phones. great protection while still remaining slim. also, otterbox has the new reflex case. i would recommend that one as well. slim and tough. you can find both on amazon for around $20. cheers

Commuter in black, Commuter in white, and Spigen Ultra Thin Air...
Otterbox Defender. Since they replace it once it stretches out with no problems I will continue to use it.
My defender silicon case has stretched out before. I simply placed in boiling water (OFF THE BURNER) for exactly thirty seconds. Remove it with tongs and quickly, yet gently dry it off. Mold it to the plastic case and place it in the fridge to cool.
Perform at your own risk. Your experience may vary.
I use the Urban Armor Gear. It is the best case IMO. I had the Otterbox Commuter, and the CaseMate Pop! Nothing beats the Urban Armor Gear. I love how it makes the phone square and flat and not curved. And idk why, but it makes my screen look bigger. It looks huge and bulky in the product photos but it's really thin.

Currently running a black Incipio silicrylic. Yesterday I purchased a black UAG based on the reviews of it and it should be here tomorrow.
I use a Seidio Surface case and love it. It's a hard shell, but not so thick that it can't be used in some docks. Soft-touch coating so it's easy to grip. And it has cutouts around the buttons (I like using the actual buttons on the phone, not the crappy ones that most cases include). The only downside is it's TOUGH to get off if you don't know the trick (apparently, I can't vouch for that since I STILL can't do it easily).
http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-surface-case-black-p/csr3ssgs3-bk.htm
I have the defender as well. I also notice the rubber stretching a little bit. Once it gets a little more noticeable I will ask otterbox to replace it. They have great customer service. I experienced this with the galaxy nexus defender case as well. They sent me 3 replacements before I gave up and settled with the commuter for the nexus.
So long as they continue to send replacements, I'll continue to take advantage of it. Personal opinion they should really make the rubber last longer. My defender for my captivate lasted almost two years before I replaced the phone. The case still fits perfect to this day. Something happened within the last few years with otterboxs rubber casing for the defender. Whatever they have changed since the captivate has not worked out very well.

Help with case

Hi, i wanna buy a case for the s3,
i'm Debating between 3 case,
1.speck candy shell
2.otterbox
3.Case Mate Tough
I'd like to hear the Advantages and Disadvantages of each
tnx!
I have owned the otterbox defender and the commuter series. I am much happier with the commuter. It has a dual layer and the exposed layer is hard which I like better because the defender series had a soft shell that streched out and looked bad. Plus the commuter series is much smaller. It feels less bulky and mire high end.

I am assuming you have already looked at the UAG case. If not, definitely check it out. I have a few friends that switched from Otterbox to the UAG and they love it. Good luck
no, i didn't hear about UGA
but he looks a very "massive" case and uncomfortable to carry the s3, put hin in the pocket etc
Not the case at all.
Not nearly as bulky as you'd think, and slides easily in and out of your pocket.
Great protection as well.
Does it have to be drop protection case?
