[Q] Hardbricked my S3. Should I send it in to Samsung? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi guys, I tried upgrading my phone from jellybam 10.2 to 10.3 and also tried to install the kangbang 2.0 kernel, but my phone ended up getting hard bricked. The light won't even turn on when connected to my charger. I already chatted with a samsung employee and got a repair ticket prepared and ready to go, but I was wondering if they'll be able to find out that I flashed my phone and would then void my warranty if I sent it in.
So I was wondering if I should send it in to Samsung or pay for a JTAG service. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately I don't have a linux/windows dual boot system. Also I have a cracked screen so maybe samsung might be able to replace that too.

You can do this process on windows with cygwin look through the comments its in the first few pages

im currently working advanced technical support for samsung and i can tell you that, yes they will be able to tell if you rooted it.
this DOES technically put you out of warranty but a software reflash is free of charge even if you are out of warranty.
while the software reflash may not fix the issue as im sure the agent let you know, they will attempt it for you.
if for some reason the reflash doesnt work and additional repairs are needed, they will deem the device out of warranty by condition and contact you with the price for a OOW repair, standard charge $70.36.
also, turn around time for repair is going to be about 2 weeks (2/5-7/2 bussiness days)
there are ways to reset the flash counter (you can find those on here), however im pretty sure they require you to be able to get into the device

There's an app that resets it. You do have to pay for it I think its like $4.99 its called. Triangle away its on the play store. Also you can reset it through command prompt

[Q] May of hard bricked my phone?

Hey guy today I was planning on updating my gio to ics via galaxyics.com but before I did that I tried to backup my rom via rom manager and it went all wrong. After I hit the OK button my phone turned off and would not turn on via power button or charging (even removed the battery for 15minutes) I can't get it on at all. So if my knowledge is correct is this not hard bricking and how could I fix it. I no it won't be easy but what if I flashed my phones internal memory somehow and reloaded android to it. Would that work? Other options please help. If nothing works btw how much do you think i could get for it on eBay or something (maybe as parts)?
Take it to service center, they will fix it for free as long as you say you didn't root it. Sorry man, but this is the same hard brick i got a couple of months ago

If you own a Gio, don't install ROM Manager on it - you have a better chance bricking your phone than doing anything useful with it.

What do you mean by service center I bought my phone off of kijiji so its not under warranty or anything to that effect?

Ya I'm gonna try to get it into download again when I get home but I wasn't having any luck prior but what would they do if I sent it away in comparison to what I can do at home.
Last time i used rom manager nothing worked, downloadmode, recovery, booting. Give up this thing needs to be repaired there is nothing you can do.

If you're in the Montreal area there is an authorized Samsung service centre near the 40 and Cavendish, it's called Service Absolut. I would suggest you take your phone there. You might even be able to wait while they repair it.
As per my experience and this thread you will need some proof of purchase though to get warranty service.

Unfortunately I'm about 12 hours from Quebec but on the up side I found full schematics for tthe phone last night. Now I am curious to why you say the mother board as I assumed the boot pprocedures where stored on the internal memory of the phone hence why they got damaged not in the bios of the motherboard.How much you think a new board will run me?

The thread I linked to also has a Samsung phone number worth trying to get a shipping label for the service center (be it the one in Montreal or another, they have a few). And they shouldn't really care who your carrier is as long as you have a proof of purchase (even something with the original seller's name on it and note of some sort might work).

Okay, so I got my new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III less than a month ago.
My friend helped me in the past few days to root and install cyanogenmod 10. Everything was still fine, until I did something in some kind of pixel density changing app. When rebooting, it only showed the Samsung and Samsung Galaxy S III screens when booting up, but went no further. I wiped everything and restored the last backup I made (advanced restore). Everything ran fine again, with all the original factory stuff. I decided to try and see if I could reinstall cm10 (wiped everything, installed zip, rebooted), and it was successful. Then I decided I wanted to wipe that and try out Energy HD 2.0. Once trying to install the zip, it returned an error message and aborted. I then decided to scrap that idea and just go back to the original factory rom and everything. So I once again wiped and restored my last backup. Upon hitting Reboot, it just went black and didn't turn on again. Now I am completely unable to turn it on, charge it, go into cwm recovery, or download mode. Plugging into the computer just pops a driver install message for QHSUSB_LOAD. Never has anything, even the LED, so much as blinked.
Can somebody please help me? I just would like to know if there is a way to get it working. I'd be very grateful, thanks!
*detail, meaning just what I was doing, as I do not remember exact error codes and such.
Try reflashing. What stock image are you using?

Is it even possible to re-flash a recovery image (from Odin3) when the device cannot enter download mode?
I think it may have been CWM Recovery v5.0.4.2 or something that I originally installed/flashed (can't check right now though, because I was kicked off my computer). Then it had upgraded to v6.something later on my phone.

Yeah I would say your bootloader is messed up and the only way to breath life back into your phone is jtag repairs. I had a problem identicle to yours and I searched the net for a week solid trying to figure out how to fix it without having to fork over the money.. but alas had to send it. Luckily the guy who provides the repairs is amazing at what he does. Phone will be back in your hands within a few days if you're from the states.

Hmm, okay. I wonder then why only JTAG Repairs knows how to fix this stuff, and the information isn't widely available.
And so if I do send it to jtag, then I guess I'll be getting it back within a few days, 'cause I live in the US.

Well there is a way for you to do the jtag repairs yourself... but i wouldn't touch the process with a 10 foot pole lol... I would rather let a pro do things like that... just youtube jtag repair and take a look at some of the process.... way beyond my comprehension atleast..

Ah, I suppose you're right. Not to mention expensive. That equipment probably costs more than having them fix it. Though it would probably be worth it of you bricked it on a regular basis.

[Q] Bricked Question? Please Help.

For the record I did search the forum (pretty quickly) and didn't find what I was looking for so I hope I'm not reposting the same issue.
So I was flashing the Slim Bean 4.2.2 rom to my galaxy s3 using goomanager and i think my phone is hard bricked.
In goomanager it allows you to select multiple zips to flash, and I'm pretty sure they flash in the order they are listed. Well i planned to flash the Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL (the rom itself), Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.6 (google apps for the rom), and Extras.4.2.2.build.6 (extras specific to the rom) for the Slim Bean rom from the slimroms site.
I had the Extras.4.2.2.build.6 zip listed first then accidentally pressed the flash button and without thought confirmed my actions in the pop up window (Yes i'm an idiot). So it rebooted and went through some script then my phone went black.
It wont go into download mode (home, power, vol down), it won't display anything on the screen, and it wont power on. My computer recognizes it and shows that it is connected. I don't know if that will do anything it terms of fixing it on my own? I haven't read up on bricked phones too much but i'm pretty sure its hard bricked.
Sooooooo, first off does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?
-If i were to take it to a Sprint store what would they say? I've had it for a year and I don't think i have any warranty (granted i know rooting my phone would technically void it anyways). If it doesn't power on or do anything could I say it turned off in the middle of the 4.1.2 OTA update and resulted in its current state?
-Would a usb JIG boot my phone into download mode and fix my problem?

"Slim-i9300-4.2.2.build.6-OFFICIAL" that is the international model version of the ROM. Flashing International ROMs hard brick your phone. So yes, you do have a hard brick. As to taking it to sprint, Idk if they'll do anything for you especially if you have no insurance or warranty. Sorry bud
Well your problem is not that you flashed in the wrong order. Your problem is that you flashed a rom from the International S3 (i9300) not the sprint SPH-L710. You attempted to turn your Sprint phone into an International S3. This flashed completely different partitions onto your device. JTAG is the only way to fix it. They have to open the device and repartition everything. Mobiltech is the way to go. My advice in the future is if you don't find the rom in the Sprint Galaxy S3 forums do not flash it.

Ya, I didn't know what they'd do if i played dumb (i know, thats bad, but im desperate) and said it did this during the official OTA update.

Just do more research next time before flashing. And as the person above said, don't flash anything that isn't on the sprint GS3 forums.

Unfortunately yes you are hard bricked and it sucks. JTAG will fix it Google it there are good services out there for about $60 and week or so turn around.
If you pay for insurance you could also take it to sprint and tell them it won't boot and they should replace it for a deductible. Some will call this fraud but the way I see it if you pay for insurance it is there to cover mistakes. You didn't mean to brick it just like some one who dropped it in a pool didn't mean to ruin their phone.

I guess I'll run to the sprint store tomorrow and see what they can do, if anything.
If they can't do anything, mobiletech it is! It looks to be a reliable site. Will my phone be active on the sprint network still after the JTAG? or will I have to do anything to it? I also assume I will get all the text messages and what not that my phone is currently incapable of receiving now?
Any thing else I should know about the JTAG or my phones hard bricked state before I go ahead with it since we are on the subject and I don't want this to happen again.

I doubt you will get any texts, sprint is not saving to deliver them later. Unless your using Google Voice. Your phone will be up and running rom flashed but it won't activate until you log into it with your google ID, just like when you get in the box brand new.

[Q] Bricked Note 2

I've been having power issues with my AT&T Note 2 (draining battery when completely off, wouldn't start after changing batteries without first plugging into USB). I swapped the USB charging port with no luck. Reverted to old backup I took which didn't solve the problem either. And lastly, I started to wipe it and revert to a factory image. Aftering wiping data, system, cache, etc. my phone is stuck on the battery logo screen (no animation). It won't boot into download or recovery. I tried a homemade jig which isn't working.
I have about a year left on contract. It was refurbished and has no warranty left. I have a couple questions:
1. Should I try a jig from amazon? I'm not seeing any specifically stating they'll work with the Note 2.
2. If I've hosed bootloader or have a hardware issue, what's the chance a new mainboard will fix it? (is the internal memory part of the mainboard?)
3. Should I see if I can find a repair shop that will use jtag or something similar to salvage it?
4. Do I sell it for parts (hoping I'd get ~$200 since the display and glass are in good condition) and buy a nexus 5?
5. Any other suggestions?

Read the process of rooting and flashing at least 100 times ...so you can remember the proper steps...because after seeing your post...it is quite apparent that you don't know what you are doing....???
I don't mean to sound harsh...but dang dude...you've messed it up pretty good...
We see countless users get excited and jump in head first trying every possible mod under the sun...
Only to realize that the wrong steps were taken and the wrong software was used..
Each user has a personal responsibility to learn and understand the basics before asking for help or advice ..
Remember ...this is a development site that lives on the edge of code modification...and if not used with some prudence and wisdom ends up costing a lot of time and money...
I can't tell you what to do...only you can decide that...but honestly...you need to learn the basics "before" jumping in and toasting a $700.00 device...IMHO ...g

There is hope, you can take the shoot.bin from the update and put it in a tar file with the files from the old stock tar and flash it. I had the same problem and did this for the sprint version and completely downgraded, boot loader and all. You can find the info on the sprint version. You can email me at keithgordon66 @gmail.com and I'll give you my number so you can call me and I can talk you through it, its easy.

I was finally able to get it into download mode by removing the battery, plugging it into my laptop via USB, and doing the normal 3 button combo. Flashed the stock ROM with these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2275844 (what I was trying to do when it apparently died on me).

Bricked ATT Note4 after software update. What do i do?

I finally was forced to update to android 5.0.1. I updated at work but it failed halfway through and is now in a boot loop. I've tried every solution the internet can provide me. What do I do now? The device IMEI has a limited warranty until 2017. I purchased through swappa. I have original box but no documentation besides the barcode sticker on the side. Will AT&T replace this? It was their update that caused this anyway. Any experiences with this sort of thing please? I dropped a large chunk of change on this paperweight. Thanks

The first thing to do is find a local Best Buy with a Samsung Experience shop. They can reflash the firmware or send the phone in for repairs. This would be the best and easiest option. Most likely, you'll be able to get everything fixed in around an hour max.
BTW, it doesn't matter if the device was purchased from somewhere other than Best Buy!
I'm not sure if ATT will replace the phone if you didn't buy it from ATT. You can contact them to see though. Call them and tell them that you bought the device from Swappa. Though, most likely, they'll turn you away unless they have some sort of business alliance with Swappa.
Do this as a Plan B.
The third option is to get in contact with Swappa. I don't know anything about that service though. Usually in order to claim warranty, you need the device and proof of purchase. If Swappa has an online receipt, or even just an online purchase history, that should work. They most likely would just need some sort of proof that you actually bought the device from or through them. Like I said, I don't know anything about Swappa, so you'll have to contact them to get specifics of what you'd need.
When all else fails, go directly to Samsung. Again, tell them that you got the device from Swappa. Though, this would basically be like the first option, except that it would take longer.
All options except the first one may result in you getting a refurbished replacement. Just an FYI. The only way that Best Buy will give you a refurbished replacement is if they were to send the phone back to Samsung and it was replaced.

I'm not sure if ATT will replace the phone if you didn't buy it from ATT. You can contact them to see though. Call them and tell them that you bought the device from Swappa. Though, most likely, they'll turn you away unless they have some sort of business alliance with Swappa.
Do this as a Plan B.
The third option is to get in contact with Swappa. I don't know anything about that service though. Usually in order to claim warranty, you need the device and proof of purchase. If Swappa has an online receipt, or even just an online purchase history, that should work. They most likely would just need some sort of proof that you actually bought the device from or through them. Like I said, I don't know anything about Swappa, so you'll have to contact them to get specifics of what you'd need.

Hey, thanks a lot. This may be the single most helpful forum post I've ever read. I will drive up to BestBuy tomorrow and give it a shot. I wasn't able to flash a AT&T stock rom through Odin, but I guess it's worth a shot. I believe the flash failure was due to the AT&T bootloader being locked?

Most likely something just went wrong during the installation. The bootloader is not a factor in this matter since all ATT Note 4s have it locked and the firmware is meant for this phone.
Now, if you had the phone rooted (permanently), installed a custom kernel and recovery, etc, then the update failure would be 100% explainable. But since you can't do any of that with this phone, then the most likely cause is just "sh1t happened" or the installation was interrupted (like battery died).

I used Kies, Kies3 and Swap Sync or whatever to do an emergency restore. All of them failed. Kies 3 recognized the phone and was 98% done downloading the firmware and then failed.
Also i am not rooted and never attempted a root (on this phone anyway).
Good news. Just got off the phone with AT&T and they have a replacement on the way. Thanks for your help everybody. We have achieved the best case senario for me as i was having problems with the volume buttons anyway

Awesome! Win-win for you (I guess?)
If the volume keys were messed up, then I wonder if there was some other problems with the phone too. Ones you couldn't see... ones that prevented proper firmware installation.
