Most opportune time to sell Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since the Note 3 is about to be released in about a week or two, I would like to hear some thoughts on the best time to off-load the Note 2 and still get a decent value for it before the prices plummet. I don't think the Note 1 really plummeted that much when the Note 2 came out. It took a couple months to really drop appreciably, but it was obviously dropping much faster than before the Note 2 was released. I have no idea about the Note 2 value after the Note 3 release. I am looking to quickly sell my Note 2 and buy up the Note 3 with little downtime in between phones. The thing is, if I sell early, the price of the Note 3 will be higher. If I sell later, the Note 2 value will have diminished. I need to find the sweet spot so I lose the least amount of money and pay the least amount of money.

I would say the price of the 3 will drop quicker than the value of the 2.
I'm also in a waiting game.

I always do this waiting game
What I do is sell my current phone before the next gen phone is released so I would sell your note 2 and I use an old android phone for about a month and buy the next gen phone you'll lose little money doing this

My Dilemma - What to do?

Hi Everyone!
I'm thinking of getting a new phone.
My work allows me to replace my phone every two years at a steep discount. Currently, I can buy the Note 2, for 380$ before taxes.
However, I am also thinking maybe I'll buy the Nexus 4 at 309$ for the 8gb one.
So do I buy the Nexus 4, and buy the Note 2 to flip for a profit or just buy the Note 2 and forget the Nexus 4.
Had I not tried the Note 2, I would not be having this dilemma, but after trying it, I'm kind of enamored by it.
What would you do and why?
You know what im having the same dilemma myself and I currently own the note 2 and iam struggling to decide if I should return it and take the leap and get the nexus 4...its all really down to wat your looking for...which phone are you leaning more towards

I've always had phones that were running some variant of Android with a skin.
And I've always rooted and loaded some variant of CM. Was hoping to go Nexus this time around, so I can get the latest and greatest before all other phones.
However, what you get with the Note 2, it's form factor, power, battery, expandable mem, removable battery... ugh...

True I see where your coming from on that...the truth is nexus development wise seen as mecca whereas the galaxy phones sometimes are little behind...I think you should goto a t-mobile store and play with both and see what you like...run a few tests... like do multiple tasks at once and see how battery life trickles down....see which phone gets hot and which one doesn't...feel the textures of the of devices (especially the nexus since its back is made of sum sort of glass) and etc... I love the note 2 but...I feel like the updates are going to be hot/cold, its hella expensive (for just the phone itself) , and development wise.. idk cant predict that one...but the positives surpass the very few negatives...the main argument with the nexus is its lack of LTE /glass back and supposedly the battery is kind of whack...but thats all reviewers speculation and comments...the best thing for us might be to physically see the devices and go with what we can use daily and satisfy us for however long we intend to use them...because think about it you have a choice...either choice in my opinion is a win but I think this will all fall down to what we prefer

Get the Note II... the Nexus 4 is 8GB... without any expandable memory (dumb idea Google). You'll burn through that 8GB in about 3 minutes (rocking 16GB + 64GB microSDXC)
Well if lack of lte and micro sd doesn't bother you don't think further get the nexus !
And one more thing if the above guys calculations are good then your note 2's 16+64 gb will get exhausted in approximately 26 minutes of usage not to mention that it'll only last only 6 minutes if you don't bother buying a 64 gb memory card
Don't get me wrong,I really like the Nexus 4 but it's really got nothing on the Note 2. It's on par with the Note on a few aspects and does have us beat on some astetics but in terms of functionality and features it's no better the the Galaxy Nexus.
Only reason to get it over the Note is for the software updates, but (and 2 years ago I never thought I'd say this) Samsung has been doing just fine with it's software updates and there are sure to be plenty of options to get the latest and greatest on the Note here on xda.
Also without external storage you're not going to get much use out of the S4 Snapdragon, have more then 1 HD game and a couple hundred songs and you're out half the available memory. Not to mention that you don't get the full 8 or 16 gigs to use, you lose quite a bit to the OS between the data, cache, and system partitions. All that power with nothing to use it on is disappointing.
Just my thoughts. LG made a killer device, but without the expandable memory or 32 gigs of internal space like the AT&T and Sprint ones, the Nexus 4 is kinda the runt of the liter.
noted for future reference on my Note 2

how is that a steep discount? the note is $420 with a $50 mail in rebate =$370 and the nexus 4 is being sold on the playstore for $300
its a steep discount when you compare the note 2 to its retail price but considering your company is upgrading and renewing a 2 year..its actually costing you $10 more...they are just passing the savings onto you
secondly...if i were you...i'd buy the note 2 and then decide whether or not you actually want to keep it..you can easily sell it for $600+...so you would kinda be getting the nexus 4 for free if you flipped the note 2 then bought the nexus 4
The note 2 available to me is 380$ no contract. They're giving the phones at cost price to us. So I'm not locked into any contract.
Yeah. I'm going to wait a bit till someone has a nexus 4 at work and will try it out.
My plan is either buy note 2 and flip it and get nexus 4 16gb or keep it. We shall see.

Not 100% certain why people are ga ga over the nexus 4. There are so many detractors, from microsd slot, to LTE, to removable battery... etc. If it's the unlocked bootloader, or no carrier bloat, just snag a Galaxy Nexus. (and to the guy who said Galaxy phones were behind, uh, the Galaxy Nexus is still far AHEAD of many phones out there. I think you meant the S3 and Note2, which are still AHEAD of most phones out there) At the end of the day, you will miss your roomy microsd, your battery, your S-Pen, etc.
Now if people would just root your phones and tinker more, instead of waiting for the next rom guy to package it for you, we would all be in a better place.

Buy a note2 now or wait for note 3

I have lost my note 2 on holiday and dont have insurance so should I buy a note 2 and sell is to get the note 3 in september ? I have a s3 at home that I can trade in to get the note 2 for 430 thing is the charging port is broken and needs replacing so if I was to stick with the s3 its 250 to have it replaced I dont know what to do
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda app-developers app
I think you already know the answer to that. It's not possible to survive without a smart phone and you'll be able to recover more money by selling a note 2 than an s3 that you spent $250 to repair.

I wud suggest to just buy a spare battery and battery charger for your S3 and just switch batteries every night. $250 is not worth spending on repairing it!

Hi, this is my first message on the wonderful XDA: I'm from Italy. I use the Note 2 for a lot of actions, and the S-Pen is very important for business actions, so I'll remain with the note family. Now I have some customization frim the modding world on my Note 2 and I find new power sides of it: I"ll analize with attenrion the new features of the Note 3 to compare them.
I"ll not analize other phablet, because I use a lot the S-Pen, one of the typical feature of the Note family. Bye

My personal opinion would be to wait for the Note 2, but I know September /October feels like a lifetime from now. I'd fix that Note 2, use it till the Note 3 then sell it.
I recently had some water damage to my charger port, about $70 to get repaired.

I would expect to note3 but it sure is late and does not come out in September with these samsung already know that do not meet much your dates.

Would you still buy a Note 2?

Hi all,
I sold my Note 1 last week, since it was dying on me constantly and I needed a new one. Of course I couldn't simply downgrade to a smaller phone, and I've received a good offer for my Upgrade. I was going to get the Note 2 for £23 a month for the next two years.
Now I know the Note 3 has just come out, but at it's current price tag (£42 a month +) I just couldn't afford it.
Would it still be a good choice to upgrade to the Note 2 for the next two years? All I want is a solid productive phone with a great battery life, something my Note 1 didn't have.
Thanks in advance!

go for note2 if your budget does not permit a lot is expected with the official 4.3 update and then kitkat rolling soon next year
Let's see, I always brought my Note II with me at work.
And the working hours are 8:30am to 1pm and 2pm to 5:30pm
At the end of my work I still have 70 to 80 battery percent with Mobile Data turned on all day.
So yeah, I would still buy Note II if I had Note I and couldn't afford Note III.
But if you're someone who's itching to try out Note III, sometime along the way you'll be like "I wish I bought Note III"
Anyway, Note II is a good phone, actually almost perfect. You can survive the whole day with this guy.
Aside from battery, it's very responsive and fast.
Plus, it's never bad to upgrade hehe.
Assuming you're not a gadget/phone hungry guy, go for Note II bro.

I agree, the Note 2 is still an excellent phone. I strongly recommend to buy the LTE version (N7105).
On the other hand, if you don't like Samsung's monopolist tendency (like I don't), the LG G2 seems to be a great, affordable option. Could be my next phone (or the Nexus 5 once it's available).
Good luck

Buy a note 2 now. It's as cheap as it will get. Note 3 does not bring much to the table, you still can't see pixels in 720p and you can scale your UI however you like it using a launcher so 1080p on small devices is pretty much useless.
Battery life is ridiculously long comparing it to any other smartphone.
May not be as beautifuly crafted even as a HOX but at least they work.
It's a cheap phone that's very powerful and also does the job of a 7" tablet well. Also there's a neat stylus that does all sorts of cool stuff. Also new update soon including most of note 3's new software.
Get a note 2

Go for it, the prices have dropped to reasonable levels too.
You had a Note, so the size will be a non issue.
The only minor regret I have, is that looks and aesthetics matter to me more than I thought it did.
Slap the official protective cover, and I love it again
Thanks for all of your responses guys!
I've decided to take the plunge and have ordered the Note 2
Looks like I'll be rooting it as soon as I get my hands on it
Looks like I've received the 4G Note 2 (GT-N7105)..
Anyone know if there is any disadvantages to this? I don't mind the 4G, but I really do not want battery life to be affected, mainly because I'll be using Wi-Fi and don't have a 4g plan anyway.
Any ideas on whether I should give it back for an N7100?
Thanks!
No way should you give it back. I have the 7105 and don't have a 4g plan either but will maybe get one on my next contract.
Imo the 7105 will be worth more in trade in and your still going to use it non lte so the battery issue is not an issue.
As long as you don't want fm radio keep and enjoy what you got.
Let us know how you get on.

My two cents:
I have an Xperia Z and a Note 2, and recently bought an S4, after mulling a bit over the Note 3. I found that my Note 2 betters the S4, and beats the Xperia too. The Note 3 for me did not offer any thing new that I could find interesting. The Note 2 is still an awesome device, and I won't be letting it go for a while.
The main plus the N3 has over N2 (for me) is a better display. For my everyday use (office stuff, light gaming, music) the N2 is great, the battery rocks, and the 8mp camera is decent enough (and better than the Xperia's in many aspects - not kidding! ). I would recommend this phone any day!

[Q] Do i get this phone?!

Hello guys, i know this is more of a question type thread, but i just need to know this. Should i get this phone? i can get it for free on a £21 a month contract, is it still very fast and snappy? also, is the screen good? i would appreciate your feedback! thank you!
No one can really answer that question for you.
However, imo its still fast, snappy and I love the screen. I thought I would get the note 3 but it hasn't done enough to woo me.
I might be tempted to look at the lg g2 if I had no phone. But I do so I won't.
I hope that helps in some way.

I'd say the Note 2 is worth getting if your budget doesn't allow for a newer, fancier handset. How long is the contract? If it's 24 months then you might want to look at a slightly newer one, or consider selling the Note 2 half-way into the contract. I got the Galaxy S2 on a 2 year contract 2 years ago (the contract ended yesterday - I'm finally free!), but unlocked it and sold it about 14 months into the contract and bought the Note 2 outright. The Note 2 has a nice size, a better than average screen and commendable internal hardware.

Thank you! It is a 24 month contract, I was considering the nexus 5 but it is the same as my nexus 7 in design and software, so I will most likely go for the note 2. Or, I could wait till the end of my current contract and get a better phone cheaper on upgrade because at the moment I am paying £90 to cancel my current contract. Is it still worth getting the note 2 when it runs out in June?

It depends on the price of the Note 2 vs the Nexus 5. It seems to me that the Nexus 5 would be a better value upgrade than the Note 2, because it is much newer and overall the hardware is better (1080p screen, 2.3 Ghz Krait CPU etc). Over here in Australia, the price of a brand new Nexus 5 is about the same as a second hand Note 2 so if I had a choice of either phone now, I'd pick the Nexus 5 over the Note 2.
I really think the GN2 is worth it... As far as price goes it is definitely cheaper than any of the new handsets out... As far as screen goes it is very well off when it comes to quality, yes it isn't premier in comparison but any noticeable difference is subtle at most... As far as battery life one could easily argue that the GN2 is still the best... As far as firmware upgrades (if you decide to go custom) the GN2 is about as good as it gets... Already have a flashable 4.4 thanks to OmniRom (although not stable enough to use as a daily driver it is worth mentioning to show the speed of development with the device)... As far as speed goes... There really isn't anything better than the quad core functionality of the GN2. Even though some device offer octo-core processors they really don't use more than 4 at any one time and so speeds are barely noticeable at best... Ultimately the GN2, IMO was a head of its time and still has at least 2 years of fully reliable, upgradable usage left

Agree with everything that Phx said.
I'm one year in to my 2 year contract with the Note 2 and it's the first phone I've ever owned that I haven't been desperate to sell mid-contract.
It's very very fast, zero lag, great screen and fantastic battery life. 4.3 OTA update is due very soon with 4.4 already in development so you should have no worries about updates.
The Note 2 was way ahead of its time. The only thing it lacks compares to recent handsets is 1080p resolution, but on a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable.
Thank you guys, this has really helped, I have decided to wait until June and then get the GN2 then, i think it will probably be cheaper then anyway, also, what does IMO mean?
p.s I used my friends note 2 that he just got and it is very speedy and the screen looks very good. I am coming from a samsung galaxy ace, so anything would be better!

IMO = In My Opinion... I would also keep an eye out for Black Friday/Holiday sales (Xmas and New Years) as you might get a better deal during those time frames... Also check consistently as I was able to nab 3 Nexus 4s for 50 bucks a pop in March (online only) ---
---will add that though the Note 2 will always seem bulky to your peers... After 2 weeks you really grow accustomed to its size and will look at almost every other phone as tiny and hardly usable

Coming from a Galaxy Ace, the Note 2 would be a great upgrade. Personally, I've grown to prefer AOSP over Touchwiz - maybe that's why I'd prefer the Nexus 5 over the Note 2. But that's if I didn't have either phone right now; I love the Note 2 on AOSP-based firmware. It beats the Nexus 5 just with its expandable storage alone!
As you like aosp it is worth mentioning the note 2 had a good selection of custom roms, aosp, aokp, stock and hybrid. Omni rom had just released an (almost) stable kit kat 4.4 rom. Thus offering a lot of what the nexus 5 offers

I'm using RootBox v4.2 (as seen in my signature) and I love the flashy window animations and scroll effects. It's still based on 4.2.2 though - because 4.3 uses TRIM, it needs a full wipe so I haven't really been bothered to look for another ROM.
Do you know any 4.3/4.4 ROMs that have rather fancy animations?

On the fence need opinions...

I have owned every note from 1-3. My note 3 i replaced so many parts on since it suffered a lot of dropping abuse on my end and ironically the first phone I decided to go caseless on. I am quite the android fanboy to say but I have also owned every iphone to toy around with. My note 3 died around the time the iphone 6 came out. I decided to rock a 6 plus till the note 4 came out. At first I was just totally frustrated by all of ios short comings and restrictions. Coming from a noted and highly customized note 3, it was a total pain in the ass. In the past 2-3 weeks I have however developed quite a liking toward my 6 plus, while eagerly waiting the note 4 release. I played with the note 4 several times at best buy and was about to buy one out of contract today from someone who preordered. I do not have upgrade available atm, my next upgrade would be in about 40 days or so. I could get a note 4 for 600 flat tomorrow new off contract which isn't bad considering upgrading thru sprint is 400 with activation and taxes. Now I am heavily considering if the note 4 is worth switching to. I have to admit I was not a heavy s pen user and multi window I used rarely. My 6 plus has battery life that I have never experienced on a smart phone since this one really really odd note 2 ( i had the note 2 in both colors and on 2 diff carriers)that I had that seem to last forever. My question is do you guys feel I should wait and hold out for the note edge? While I am highly attracted to the note 4, the edge is really captured me when the two phones were announced. Anyone else making the move from a 6+?
