Bad screen quality control ? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello , so I bought today a new Nexus 7 32GB Wifi Only , after i played with it a bit i decided to check for dead pixels , and have found one , its located on the navigation bar , so when in portrait you can't see it , but in landscape you do notice it right next to the edge of the screen .
Now i am not sure what to do , even if I am able to get a replacement unit nobody can guaranty that it will be perfect , for all I know I can get a device with a dead pixel in the middle of the screen and not on the side where its less noticeable ..
Does any one have a word of advice? I have read about a lot of people replacing nexus's one by one and still can't get a "perfect' device.
BTW, its even manufactured in September , so its not some old defective butch i guess .

If it doesn't have light bleed or any other issues, my advice is don't replace it.
My 1st Nexus 7 2013 32GB had 1 dead pixel near the side. After advice from this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387900) I replaced it, again and again. I'm on my 5th unit now, and two months wasted, I have still not seen a perfect unit. Infact my current unit has a dead pixel and major light bleed (none of the other units had light bleed). Now, the store won't accept my returns and I'm stuck with it. I WISH I kept the 1st nexus, had 2 extra months enjoying it, instead of repeated re-visits to the store, waiting for more stock, and discovering it's worse than before.
I think the vast majority of people who have said their unit is perfect are simply unable to notice a dead pixel (they are tiny). I've been through 5 and they all suffered from dead pixels. Unlucky or not, 5 out of 5 with bad pixels is terrible statistics. My guess is 1 out of 10 is perfect.

Its really sucks ... The pixels are so small but yet in landscape you do notice it on backgrounds like white and light gray ... When portrait the navigation bar covers it so its not that bad I guess ...
The delivery guy should come tomorrow afternoon so maybe I will call in the morning to cancel , and just stay with my current device ..

Up to you, many people are saying their unit is perfect, so maybe I just have terrible luck. I tell ya, you won't be happy if you get one that suffers from light bleed.
I'd return this again if I could, but Future Shop has basically told me to jump in a lake after I returned so many units for dead pixels.

The sad thing that this are latest batches , new stock that came to the store just yesterday .. I would get if there was poor q/c on the first units , but things like that should be fixed within weeks , poor q/c after 4 months of production is a complete joke ...
To be honest this is my first Asus product , when I buy computer parts I always go for Gigabyte and others , Asus products are always overpriced , which is funny as their q/c is so bad .

@Overon
I felt that the black dot was on top of the screen and not part of the screen, so i turned on the flashlight on my phone ,looked at the display when off and its a dark particle between the display and glass , now i think i will just keep it and live with this dust under the glass .
I am sure its better then having a real hardware problem.. annoying yes, but as you can relate - could be much worse.

Well, I got my Nexus 7 back .. the said they didn't found anything with it , so the only factory restored it and send me back ..when I turned it on I saw that they didn't restore it at all, interesting thing i notice a minor light bleed on the top and bottom of the screen , which i don't remember being there before...

Today i noticed a red small red spot on a black background ... so ASUS what's next with your quality ?

[Q] dead/stuck pixels, how common are they on the Defy??

Hi, I have my Defy for about a month and just now noticed 2 tiny stuck pixels of green/blue colour. They are actually visible only on black screen and in normal usage you can only find them if you know where they are, otherwise it only looks like a tiny particle of dust.
Since I only noticed it now it's too late for me to send it back
Have tried different software solutions and ran them over some nights, but nothing helped. So it seems they are permanent. I'm still on stock firwmare and havent flashed it yet.
It's sort of psychological thing... personally, I find it frustrating and it pisses me off because I know the problem is there and I have paid the full price for the phone to be perfect.
I was wondering how many of you experienced this and is there any chance that motorola would cover this problem under warrianty (in EU)?
My first Defy got a stuck pixel within the first week of me owning it. I phoned T-Mo and they sent me a replacement the next day. Before I did that though, I asked a T-Mo employee in one of their shops about it. He told me that if I couldn't get it sorted over the phone, to come back into the shop and they would help me get it replaced under warranty.
I don't really know how it all works but that was just my situation - hopefully it's of some use.
My defy that I just sold had two dead white pixels. One in the middle of the screen and one about the height of the volume rocker. Only visible on black screen though.

Horizontal black line on LCD screen.

It is related to Accessories so posting it over here.
Sorry to say that but i have thrown my mobile so many time on the floor and i was wondering why nothing happened for the screen. . But from yesterday onwards i am getting a horizontal black line on my screen. :'( . I think i may have to replace the screen. Does anybody experianced this before?? . How much it may cost??
How big is that black line?
Also, are you able to use the portion occupied by the black line. I mean is the touch screen working? If yes then you just need to change the screen, which is for some 1000 rupees. If touch screen is not working, you need to change the whole pannel, which famn costly. There was person with the same prob. Check his thread in the general section

Yah touch screen is working . it is across the screen with around 1 px width.
this happens to all electronic devices with a screen.
with damage and/or time it will get a line of vertical or horizontal pixels not working.
happened to my psp to....(a pink line)
nothing much u can do. either wait a few months till u get a new phone or pay a bit and fix it. phones arnt sturdy as they used to be. remember the first few black and white nokia phones? they were indestructable! they could go for more than 5 years!
but now most phones stay alive for 2 years till they start showing their age.
but i guess changing the display wouldnt cost too much either.
but i would suggest waiting a few months for a new phone. our phone is already outdated and i think in about 6 months to 1 year before even deving stops...
hit tks if i helped!
i had the same issue with my cell...i went to d samsung service center as my cell was still in warranty...i got it repaired for free..

black band may appear, and because of the impact (fall, pressure), or many other reasons that there is not a warranty case

Dead Pixels

I have about 5...does anyone else have this issue?
I have 2 dead pixels
Pristine and unblemished here. Sorry for your loss.
I've got one dead pixel. Not too worried about it though.

Same here.
I got one :crying:...
I have another watch coming, I'm going to check that one and return the one with the most dead pixels.
One, but it just went away. Lucky me.

Haha no loss here...just seeing if others had the same experience. Thanks though!
Just picked up mine, one dead pixel.. Apparently the first batch is mostly defective
None.
I have 1. Google Play is in the process of replacing the watch. I reported it to them the day I received it.
Really disappointing to see this issue be so common.
i received two silvers from motorola today... two stuck green pixels on both, same mid/upper left location.
I have about 4 dead pixels, best buy is going to replace it. They ordered me another one and I'll just return my current watch when it comes in.
Numerous dead or stuck pixels all over. Just got it today, contacted Motorola (bought it straight from them) and got a full refund, a return label, and a 10% promo code to purchase a new one.
I had one dead pixel. Just returned mine yesterday.
So, a buddy of mine ordered ours together and we both wound up with dead/stuck pixels: His had 2, mine had 5.
We don't want to be without them and potentially get stuck waiting for a couple weeks, since we got the silver ones and they seem to be in high demand, but I think we might just have to return/exchange them. It sucks because if his Best Buy wasn't closing down relatively soon, we could hold on to our current ones until the new ones came in but they have orders to the store disabled meaning we'd have to return them right away and ship the replacements to his place.
This is why I rarely, if ever, buy first gen/first batch electronics.
Hmmmmm I have one dead pixel barely noticeable but it's there.. Tempted to exchange it but don't want more dead pixel there.....
None here, pristine. I'd go insane if I had dead pixels. Dead pixels are the worst to me. My eye gravitates to them every time. I have a few on my work monitor and it drives me insane but they wont' buy me a new monitor and its out of warranty.
I traded 3 total.... Every one had 1 or 2 idea pixel..... I gave up.....
So, to see the dead or stuck pixels is everyone setting the brightness on 5 and going to a black screen (such as the about screen under settings)?
When I do this, I see a few pixels at the top of the screen and one in the lower left that appear to be stuck? However, without turning up brightness and being in a dark room on a black screen, I see none. I also can't see the stuck pixels on any other screen except for the boot up screen or this black about screen.

Is this a faulty screen ?

So I just got my OP5T today and at first when I checked the display it seemed ok . When I set up a dark gray wallpaper guess what I see . If you look carefully in the left part of the screen you will see what I talk about .I will attach a photo . Is this a faulty screen ? I want to say that it's only visible on that gray type . The one I have my wallpaper set up . What should I do ? What you guys advise me? Thanks in advance .
Is the never settle logo the wallpaper? if it is, everything should be fine but if it isn't, there is definitely a problem with your phone.
Horrible picture are you talking about the left side being darker?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
Not sure what you mean exactly. I just downloaded the dark wallpaper from internet . And indeed it has never settle logo . I guess it's an OnePlus classic wallpaper or something.
Yes I am talking about the left side of the screen. It must be in darker place so it can be seen . That why the quality is bad. Sorry.

Did you try changing the wallpaper for something more colourful? Perhaps it just has to do with the wallpaper. Download Zedge and apply a dark wallpaper to see if the issue still persists.
I made a new photo . A better one I would say . On photo it looks worse than real life . But still , just for you guys to make a idea . This only occurs on grays. On the rest of colors it seems ok .

If you didn't drop it then yes, there is definitely something wrong with the screen. You should probably ask oneplus to send you a new unit
I already sended them a complaint . With photos attached . The last thing I needed now... This type of issue ... I'm so disappointed .
Thread about oneplus 5t issues if that might help you....
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oneplus-5t-issues-thread.689116/
I am very curios to see their reply. For me its obvious there's a problem with the screen. Left side aint as clear as the right side. Its dark on gray color photos and quite noticeable. And no, i did not dropped the phone.
Always going to be faulty panels with oled screens unfortunately
Its a faulty screen, that is what i believe is un-even brightness issue. I also had this issue on my op3t, but very minimal and mostly unnoticeable in daily use. so i dont bother to send it back. Well,in you case its quite severe, u should send it back and get other replacement.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3010 using Tapatalk
Exactly what i was thinking too. I could live with a smaller uniformity but this one is annoying. By the way, when i will send it back, will it have any effect if i would ask them to check the screen again before sending the new unit? Or i must keep playing the lottery.
Use your 15 days return advantage. Order a new One and hopefully its done....
I got mine 2 weeks ago and had the exact same issue. You'll notice how in white pictures the left side is reddish and the right one is greenish. I was so bother that I asked for a refund, and ordered a new one (I didn't trust replacement process because maybe they say its a visual effect or they repair it, but I don't want a repaired phone but a new one).
So, yesterday I got my refund and another 5t is arriving this afternoon.
It cannot be unseen, so I'll rather waste two weeks replacing it than living with it for the next two years.
Good idea. When they will respond my email i will ask them for a refund just to avoid being repaired. I would hate to know i have a repaired phone when i paid for a brand new one. Thanks for the tip. One more question.. If i would exchange the unit, i would get another 15 days since it arrives? Or its only counted from the first arrival.
By the way i opened the refund process. So i choosed refund, than mentioned the reason, uploaded 3 photos as proofs. And now it says this. I have to send the phone to their service? And if so, whats their adress? Saw nothing like that.

Dark stripe with low brightness

Hi,
I bought recently a new Samsung galaxy tab s4 and the first time I watched a movie laying on bed with the lights off (low screen brightness), I noticed a dark stripe on the screen...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TqcpX6g0ciE
Well... Is this normal? I guess it's not. Should I return it?
Thanks!
I have this too on my Samsung Note 4. It is a common defect of AMOLED displays, where the temperature and luminance degrades the pixels over time, increasing the probability for burn-in.
You can try to find which app caused this, by matching up the dark area with the app contents. For me it was YouTube and 8 Ball Pool that I was using for long periods at full brightness --- when playing a fullscreen video or game, the screen will NOT turn off. I kept forgetting this, and went to the bathroom or kitchen leaving the screen on!
Did you buy it second hand, used? The previous owner or you may have likely used full brightness and showing a static image for long periods.
There is nothing you can do to fix it. The S4 is still a new flagship model so you may be able to get a replacement.
Well... I bought the tablet two months ago, brand new, and I have barely used it. Like... twice a week or so.
My sister has the same model, used it a lot more and it hasn't developed dark stripes.
I cannot find a match except, maybe, the Google search bar. I guess I will try to get it returned. I cannot accept this on a 500€ tablet. Should I know this before hand, I'd bought a Huawei tablet for half the price.
Or maybe I'm overreacting and I simply got a defective unit.

Hi. Sorry. I've been offline lately. Here is the test image: https://ibb.co/F3VjHSh
I'm going to return the tablet to the store to see what can be done.

Thanks what was your brightness set at ? Man in the video link you posted the text at the bottom looked crazy bright ? On mine it looks fine please note i did move the image like you did my brightness is set at dead center on the second icon so about 25% or 30% ish (im guessing)
Also i set the brightness half way, and i do not get that black bar!
I had the same problem on the tab S3. Samsung text said it was a known issue, affecting about 30% of all screens. It is replaceable under warranty. Eventual getting through the first round of tech support, ask for support team to handle your issue. My tab S4 had the same issue, but it wasn't as noticeable. I accidentally folded into a fold-up couch and demolished it, whenever I got a replacement under AT&T insurance policy, the tablet I got had a perfect screen! I'm taking has best care of it as I possibly can, as it is literally the first perfect screen I've seen on the S Series tablets. It may be frustrating to deal with the 5 to 10 day turnaround time, but as an artist who actually works on Gray backgrounds quite often it was worth the effort.

Thank you for testing this on your tablet. Actually, the overall brightness was about 15-20%. But that was enough for a dark/dim room.

Oh, do you have any references for this?
Ouch. I can feel the pain of the couch event.
Well, my tablet came today from the tech support... They wiped the memory and cleaned some greasy fingerprint marks.
But they did not solve the problem. I guess they even tried to find out what was wrong.
I'm starting to be unhappy with Samsung...

No direct reference as it was a tech I was speaking with on the phone. Just ask specifically to be forwarded to support team. Then you will only be speaking with one service rep, and they will be in direct contact with the tech that handles your tablet. They can even ensure it goes to the repair center closest to you.
Well... I'm feeling like this story needs an end.
I actually send the tablet to the repair center and they changed the screen. The lady at the store were I purchased the tablet told me that the problem was a loose flex cable inside the tablet, but... Who really knows? The repair sheet doesn't mention that.
Anyway, the tablet is better now, but not 100%... It still shows a slight darkening towards a corner of the screen, barely noticeable under normal circumstances but that does indeed shows with test images. The good thing is that this is not a dark band anymore.
Thanks to everyone that participated in this thread
