[Q] Possible to delete locked Verizon bookmarks in default browser without root? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

The HTC One's stock browser comes with three locked bookmarks. I was wondering if there's a way to delete them without root? I've tried the bookbmark sort & backup and bookmark manager apps without any luck.

If you're OK with Chrome you can sidestep the locked bookmark issue -- I've just hidden the stock browser from the app tray and don't even think about it. Another nice feature from Chrome is it will sync your bookmarks from other devices if you log in with the same Google account.
EDIT: ah, interesting -- just noticed a "Verizon" bookmarks folder in my Mobile bookmarks folder. Can't delete it. Hmmm, doesn't seem too distracting...

Hey Matt, appreciate the input. Yep I have chrome and opera mini installed, as well as dolphin, which used to be my main browser. I recently read about the dolphin browser being from china or routing data to a Chinese server, so I've pretty much stopped using it. The stock browser actually isn't bad - it feels just as fast as Chrome overall, and I like the "lab" UI on the stock browser a lot. And it seems to sync with the bookmarks from the google account too.
Stupid Verizon... guess we'll have to wait until root to delete them!

So what's this lab UI you speak of -- or did you mean to say "tab"? Is it worth unhiding the stock browser to check out? Didn't realize it also syncs Google bookmarks. Guess I should check those things before offering advice!
FWIW...speaking of root, this is my fifth day with the One and I'm totally understanding those "I can live with this phone as-is" testimonials. My only concern is whether it will start to slow down without regular shots of fstrim (which we'll get someday with 4.3). At least I know now how to get into the bootloader/ecovery to clear the regular cache.

Nope, I meant labs! It's almost like an easter egg... go to Settings --> Labs --> turn on Quick Control.
This puts the stock browser in full screen mode and hides everything. Very clean! The control is tricky at first - what I've discovered works best for me is to use the side of my thumb and roll over from the edge, as if running over a finger print scanner. Then, a wheel pops up with all settings, bookmarks, etc. Once you get the hang of it, it's super intuitive and so elegant.
And you know what... the same thing was already in my Rezound stock browser too! Maybe it's Sense thing? If so, HTC really sucks at marketing - I really love this feature.
Also I read in some posts that the stock browser gave the best battery life. In light of all the tracking going on, I am starting to try to pull back from all things Google. So for now, I am enjoying the stock browser - save for the stupid Verizon locked bookmarks!
What's this about fstrim and cleaning cache? Mind elaborating?

Wow Eric, thanks for filling in the blanks. I definitely have to try it.
Here's the quick breakdown on my side:
fstrim -- The TRIM function in Android/Linux takes memory space that has been deleted, and informs the memory controller that it's available (it normally doesn't check until it tries to find writable space which eats up CPU time). The fstrim function has been added to 4.3 and runs quietly when the device is idle (you can also run the Lagfix app, but it requires root). As a case study, it totally transformed the slow and pokey 1st gen Nexus 7 into a speedy beast.
cache cleaning -- Ideally, we'd have root and could occasionally delete the Dalvik cache as well as the regular data cache. Unfortunately we can't do the first, but we can still do the latter by booting into the bootloader (this post helped me figure it out) and then just running the "wipe cache" option. I suspect it's something that won't be frequently needed on the One, but I'm glad we have the option.
EDIT: based on your sig I'm guessing that second part about cache-cleaning was pitched way too low -- if so, sorry -- it's a bad habit of mine!

For me, yes, the stock browser picked up the Chrome bookmarks. The interesting thing is that it didn't carry over the bookmark icons or labels. They're just blank, generic bookmarks for some reason. I have to guess which is which. Folder names translated over for some reason. Weird.

I used Dolphin for the longest time since I was caught up in the stigma that the stock browser sucks. I couldn't have been more wrong.
About 3 months ago I ditched Dolphin and started using the default browser in CM9, and loved it. Now all I use is the stock browser. It does its thing very well and never fusses about updates in the play store or routes traffic through China.

Oh no you're good Matt - being helpful and spreading useful info is never a bad habit I actually didn't think about this before, but yeah basically all phones are essentially running on small SSDs and TRIM support would be crucial to long-term performance.

That's interesting, because the stock browser on mine showed the Chrome bookmarks perfectly, including everything from names and website icons to the folders.

Think I did it. Didn't bother me till you pointed it out, thanks, sent me on another crusade! Try this: Go to system/app and rename PartnerBookmarksProvider.apk to PartnerBookmarksProvider.apk.bak and then data/data add .bak to com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks clear clear cache and reboot.

Haha well I am glad to help! So I renamed both and wiped both davlik and the normal cache partition in TWRP. Just rebooted. The three bookmarks are still there... and I still can't delete or edit them in any way. I even went into the browser2.db and deleted all entries under the bookmarks table using SQLite Editor. Still no luck.
What did I miss?

Nothing. What I did was apparently allow them to be removed from Chrome and I assume other browsers. They must be hard coded in the stock. I've never used it. I bet the apk will have to be dismantled to get them gone.

Flashing roms all the time? You might find this app useful...
Yeah it is ok when are just upgrading from the same rom, but it is a bit of a nuisance when you have to wipe and you loose all your data
I am sure we all know about titanium backup, and that is always the first app to load up after a full wipe, but...
What is often overlooked are your browsers bookmarks
Now for me after TB restore is this little app which wipes out all the stupid default bookmarks you get with the browser as well as at the same time restoring your lovely bookmarks exactly how you left them
Enjoy...
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.happydroid.bookmarks&feature=search_result
I solved this in a different way.
I installed the Table Styled Bookmarks addon in iGoogle (running Firefox in my PC) and have my fav bookmarks there in 3 rows.
Just set your homepage to iGoogle in your Android browser (I use the stock browser) and you're all set. Never loose your bookmarks again, don't even think about them anymore...
This works nicely if you don't use too many bookmarks (I have about 3 rows of 12). I access the rest of my bookmarks through GoMarks.
Edit: Not intended to hijack your thread!
AWESOME¡!
Now I dont have to find my pr0n all over again every single time :d

Nice app mate. I personally don't have bookmarks (Too busy flashing different ROM's) But it's always nice to have it.

This ROM is based off of EC07-Clean, but with even less stuff
I just pieced junk together and hit the delete button a lot

Desk Cradle(Trailblazer's modified version)
Facebook
Gmail
Google Search
Google Maps
Spare Parts
Superuser
Removed: (from what I remember)

New button images (Circa881)
No boot/shutdown sounds
Scribble shutdown animation (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866233)
This has been tested and retested on my phone, so all should be good. This has TouchWiz3, but I use Zeam since it's faster.

I've gotten a couple PM's that people love the ROM, and I plan on making a EC07-Nuckin-2 package.
My thoughts thus far:
New Kernel (imnuts)
Scribble boot animation
Zeam Launcher to replace TouchWiz (Zeam is super memory efficient)
Dolphin Mini to replace Browser
Better instructions, including a TAR to use with Odin
Link to alternate framework-res.apk (trailblazer's) to restore the buttons
What do you think would make this ROM cooler/faster/awesome...er?

I flashed this rom a few days ago, and so far it is great. I love how clean and fast it is.
The only problems I have had are some issues it apps FCing. I use these apps daily and was wondering if anybody has had any luck fixing FC problems? I would hate to do it, but if I can't get these apps working right I might have to reflash DL17 again.
Here are some of the apps I have come across so far that FC every time:
-Wells Fargo Mobile
-Stock Android Browser
-Movies
I am sure there are other, but these are the only ones that I have found so far that I use on a regular basis. If anybody has any insight on this it would be great.

I had the same problem with Browser, I just switched to Dolphin Mini HD but I understand you can't really do that with the other 2 apps you listed. Is it just my ROM you've had this issue with or all EC03 and EC07 ROMs?
I've had the same issue. It's been with all versions of ec07 though. some ec03 as well (if memory serves me correctly) I swapped to dolphin browser and haven't had any trouble.

Can I assume you wiped dalvik on install? If so, I'd start by clearing data on each of the affected apps in settings/applications/manage applications. And if that fails, try deleting the apps themselves, along with any data stored on SD card and reinstall fresh. Generally fc issues are due to the way the app interacts with the system.

Yeah, the browser is not that big of a deal, I switched to Opera and like it alot better than stock anyway. I ran the clean EC07 first before I switched to your rom, but I only had it on for a couple of hours so I don't know if that one had the FC issues as well. I don't think there is enough difference between the two to cause these issues. Yours is just more debloated.

Yes, I wiped cache, dalvik cache, and did factory reset/wipe data before I installed the rom, then wiped the caches again after just to be sure. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling all the apps I was having problems with. I will try clearing the app data and removing data from SD card tonight and let yall know if anything changes.
---------- Post added at 09:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 PM ----------
Ok, tried clearing data, uninstalling, wiping SD card, and reinstalling apps. Didn't work, they are all three still FCing. I think it has something to do with them accessing network/data. Browser doesn't FC until I try to load a page, Wells Fargo doesn't FC until I try to log in, and Flixter movies FCs as soon as I open it. All thee times they are trying to use network. Doesn't matter if I am on 3G for Wifi.
Just a thought, I don't know if that actually has anything to do with it.
One more thought, is it possible to have your phone hooked up to ADB in usb debugging while running an app to see why it is getting a force close?

Yes. As circa said, logcat
Commands are as follows
Adb shell
(it will start daemon. Once that is done, you will get a hashtag)
Logcat
(wait for it to scroll, then after it settles down, start the affected app)

It really isn't lol. Any website dev that's worth anything has already transitioned away from Flash to make their site iPhone/iPad friendly.
Lol... Awkward, when so many people think flash is one of the biggest reasons to choose Android over UPS devices, when really there are much better reasons than an antiquated web standard... Seriously, I hate flash. Generally have it disabled on Android anyway.

Yeah, I haven't used flash since I got my phone (3 months). However, I do keep the stock browser enabled because I like the "request desktop site" option. It's useful for the sites where you lose functionality for being on a mobile site (amazon is a good example).

This and full screen + quick controls. I think it'll be hard to implement though because they're using a swipe in from the side for switching between tabs... We'll see how they do that.
Chrome is gonna be the wave of the future on Android so we better get used to it
maybe I'm the only one having this issue... does anyone else have an insanely difficult time getting chrome to copy or cut and paste effectively? I seem to have to share the page in Gmail, copy the link from the Gmail app, then paste it where I want it. If I try to just copy from chrome when I go to paste it somewhere, the paste dialog comes up, but nothing will paste. This has happened to me on multiple ROMs. Any ideas?

The whole flash vs. No-flash is insanely funny.
People will argue that iOS devices suck because they don't have flash (not true) but when a Google browser for their Android device comes out without flash support, it no big deal!
Even look at the Firefox mobile reviews... It is mostly negative reviews because of the lack of flash, but then you read the Chrome for Android reviews and it's all 5 stars and the comment that flash isn't important.
Big LOL. Personally, I use flash all day. Many sites I visit use flash and there is no way around it. My local newspaper is flash; restaurant menus are often flash; many product review sites still use flash and flash games - well... They are obviously flash.
To each, his own... But don't be content with having less features!

what apps have you removed after root?

Just wanting to start a list as to which apps/files have been been checked to see if after removing won't mess up the phone. I want to debloat this as much as possible
I've removed all at&t apps except smart wifi
removed Polaris office, live wallpapers, Facebook, city ID
want to remove YP but it says LG YP and looks like there is some link to it from the contact book that may break, if someone has already done that please post.
Not going to touch any Google apps yet since looks like some are getting security errors on reboot
what else have you guys deleted and haven't had any issues

You have to root it and then use titanium backup to remove or freeze apps.
Better to freeze them first to make sure you don't delete something that will cause issues later.
Hope this helps.

Not a good idea at all until we have usable recovery. As linked above, some of the apps are intertwined tightly within the lg security and you will lock down your phone if you remove the wrong app. The linked poster removed Google Movies and that borked his phone.
Freezing is fine for me for now. It is not as if the bloat is causing lag, this phone is fast.
The security issue seems to be happening if Google apps were tampered. I've removed every AT&T app except myAT&T along with the Browser and Email app and even the EasySettings, and haven't gotten the security screen.
I removed most of the ATT Apps. Also got rid of LG YP. All it did was make it so the yp link in contacts doesn't work. Just an error message, no force closing.
Also added 4.2 keyboard and camera as well as SVoice. Replaced LGs weird browser with stock ICS. Loving this thing so far.
I've frozen everything with AT&T and YP in it, so far no problems. I'm also using everything I restored from my SGSIII. Apex, SwiftKey X, Handcent, etc...

How'd you get the stock browser to work? This is the only piece I can't get to work. It always force closes when trying to open it.

I got an AOSP 4.0.4 browser apk, moved it to system/apps via root browser. Renamed the lg browser to browser.bup (just to keep a stock backup copy) wiped dalvik and rebooted. Permissions need to be set to rw-r-r.
Hope that helps ya.

No go, moved it to /system/app, chmod 644, deleted /data/dalvik-cache and rebooted. Still Force closes. Any chance you can share your APK? Mine is supposed to be from the GSM Galaxy Nexus but you never know...
EDIT: Nevermind, just grabbed a Browser.apk off some random CyanogenMod 9 ROM. Didn't like it moved to /system/app, but took it fine when sideloaded as a regular APK. Go figure.
Wow, Google should've kept this browser. It blows Chrome out of the water in terms of smoothness and functionality.

Did it the same way as mentioned for the browser. Could never get photo sphere working, but i like the interface of the 4.2 camera so much more.
I once had a lg nitro hd and after removing all the bloat i safely could i found that my battery life was amazing. Has anyone experienced that on this phone too?
We should make a list of what we are freezing/removing.
Also, I've been trying to get the browser trick to work all morning... no dice. I can't even get it to show up. Had my friend send me browser.apk from his AOKP rom, and just realized its Jelly Bean.... might be the problem. Haven't tried the camera trick yet..
EDIT:
Ok I got the browser working. Used CM9 rom. Its sooooo fast. I've uninstalled Firefox, and Chrome... Now on to find the camera from 4.2
Ok, I can't get the 4.2 camera working to save my life. It FCes everytime I try it. The gallery is working fine. Used the files from here:

Browser crash on specific websites

Hi all,
I'm a day one user of the 5T that very successfully replaces my old One, except in one aspect. On specific websites (so far, Ogame and all Outlook webmails), after non-specific usage of the page, it will start to blink and get all scrambled.
I'm running an up-to-date OOS 4.7.5, rooted, but confirm the issue straight out of the box before any system edit. Has this been documented already? Here's a screencast of the whole thing happening:
Whatever you do, this specific Chrome instance is screwed and you cannot recover it. Only way out is to open a new one. It seems to get triggered when you move the page around and start pinch-and-zooming around, but nothing is sure.
Not sure if a logcat would help.
Thanks for the inputs!

I don't really wanna switch browser. I was more interested in feedbacks from other users and hypothetical fixes...

Unfortunately, no ad blocker here... Seems more related to incorrect html5 handling, but no idea why it would be device specific. Sure enough it doesn't happen on my one running LOS (btw, add lineageoslog.com to the list if websites causing this).

i've tried both on ogame (but i've no account so i just tried the home page) and outlook.live.com (with my account), both using mobile and desktop sites and i've had no issues... have you tried to clear cache and data of your chrome browser?

I just did, out of curiosity (though I did wipe cache and dalvik when upgrading days ago so I was fairly sure it wouldn't change anything). Same stuff keps happening. You're right on ogame it does not happen on the logging screen. In Outlook it's somewhat harder to trigger, I have to start writing a mail, and usually it will happen after a couple lines written. Same sh*t is happening on OnePlus forums as well. It's really a weird thing...
edit: Have just confirmed the exact same issue on a relative's OP5T, running full-stock. No root, no nothing.
edit 2: Now with a logcat of a couple seconds (https://www.dropbox.com/s/aylqw7dg2l7pup6/crash_chrome.txt?dl=0). Opening a new browser tab, going to Ogame (best way to cause the crash), a couple secodns later it's crashing. No idea what to really look for in here
