The Android 4.4 KitKat announcement sure caught a few… million people off guard early last month, which is why there’s little Google can do to shock the world anymore. Or is there? Well, how about if I told you there’s a good shot LG’s Optimus G will be one of the first ever smartphones to be officially bumped to Android 4.4? Would that be shocking enough?
Android-KitKat-4.4
Maybe not shocking, but definitely unexpected. For a handful of reasons. One, the G is nearing its first birthday, being by all intents and purposes an “aging” handheld. Two, the 4.7-incher is still stuck on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, so one would assume a 4.2 or 4.3 upgrade would be in the cards before a 4.4 makeover.
And three, does anyone even know the Optimus G exists? Not that it has aged very badly, but it’s, you know, almost archaic compared with current high-enders. It sports a 4.7-inch 720p display, 8 MP rear-facing camera in one of two configurations, plus a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU that’s no longer the proudest stallion in Qualcomm’s stable.
Not to mention it’s been followed by not one, but two top-notch LG devices, the Optimus G Pro and G2, the second of which is highly praised by a number of reviewers and simple tech-savvy individuals alike.
But let’s back up for a second. What makes us think the Optimus G will get an Android 4.4 bump in the first place? An alleged private Facebook conversation between an everyday LG user, I presume, and the guy (or gal) in charge of the company’s official French account.
The exchange is pretty straightforward, with LG Electronics France very confidently claiming the Android 4.4 update is planned for “this October”, so there you go, case closed, congrats you lucky Optimus G owners.
Sorry to be a party pooper, but not so fast, because I’m not buying it. For one thing, this is a private FB conversation (emphasis on “private”), meaning it could have very easily been doctored since there’s no real, palpable proof it ever happened.
And even if it happened (jeez, I’m starting to sound like a character on the show “Newsroom”), social media people have been known to mess up dates, names and timeframes. What if they were actually talking about a 4.2 or 4.3 upgrade and misinterpreted the question?
Then again (now I’m just grasping at straws), it’s not sooo far-fetched to think LG will get a front-row seat at the 4.4 rollout party. After all, they are making the Nexus 5, they’ve also helped build the N4, so maybe they’ve asked Big G for a bit of preferential treatment for a change. Could that be the case, what do you guys think?

Sweet... Can't wait....
Hoping for slow motion to be cooked in..

Well if I were the optimistic type about these things then I would say awesome, but I don't know. Is lg part of the Android open handset alliance (or whatever they call it) that guarantees updates for 18 months after a phone comes out? Even if they are anyone remember the Motorola fiasco? Motorola says they'll upgrade a bunch of handsets then after those handsets are sold they backed out, making a lot of people very angry. Idk I would take this with a grain of salt

True we will see I hope they do its a bad ass phone worthy of the upgrade

lg doesnt exactly have an amazing track record of updating devices.
they had teh nexus 4 which hardware similar enough to this should have meant easy updates to 4.2/4.3 for them, yet nothing...

yeah no joke aside from partition differences and screen shape/size i thought all the internals were the exact same?

I think what it is is some apps don't work on 4.3 like HBO go cause my buddy has a nexus and he can't use it thinks his phone is rooted but on my ootimus I got it and starz go and encore etc so idk lol

There is almost no possible way they would would jump 2 versions, one maybe but two, I doubt it.

Hey...we can dream, right? But honestly, with the great DEVs we have backing this phone, I have no doubt we'll see a 4.4 custom ROM in the future.

oh 4.4 aosp will more than likely be done fairly quickly, the big shift was gb to ics and it lefty a lot of devices behind. with cm9+ the code changes have been easier to adapt and make it so that we can enjoy 4.3 without any hiccups

While I am always open to upgrade/updates I am always looking to see what kind of changes are brought. If there is no new features / performance improvements then I couldn't care one way or another.
Now if you releasing an upgrade / update to fix bugs and security issues then by all means I am all for it.
Guess my point being I'm not going to get to excited about it till I see cause to do so.
Just saying...
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app

I'm sure with Sprint, We won't get an update till around December.

I just read a report that the "minimum system requirements" have been lowered in order to support older phones, so that's a good sign. Also, from the leaks that I've seen, this is way more than just a minor improvement like 4.2 and 4.3 was.
Also, even if we get 4.4, I'll wait for an AOSP rom. I just can't imagine getting the full kit Kat experience with a skin on top of it.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium

I got KitKat on my LG-LS970
Sent from my LG-LS970 using the Power of the Force

I believe we will see kit kat in near future, but lg going too push this android 4.3 on us first too give them more time with android 4.4 too beta test

Oh by the way, I found the Android KitKats at Target. I won a $5 play store credit on my first try.

Smoothness

Hey guys
I just got my Nexus yesturday and previously I had the Galaxy S2 and I was expecting the Nexus to be AT LEAST as smooth but its far from it. I only changed the kernel on my previous phone and its a lot smoother when scrolling web pages Facebook twitter etc... than the Nexus.
Has anyone noticed his? Everybody keeps saying how smooth and fluid it is but even the launcher I find lags in its transitions.
Is my phone the problem or what? Tonight I'm going to install a kernel a maybe a diffrent rom to see if it improves but so far I'm really not impressed.
Normal or not?
Btw I'm running 4.0.1

It is and has been talked about many times already. Thats why I posted what I did previously. Not trying to be an arse but jeez...use the search function for crying out loud. All of these "I thought the gnex should be" threads are getting old.
I tried searching and looked thru the first 3 pages didn't find anything. I wasn't sure either of what to type in for the search. I tried speed smoothness and nothing came out.

Well... In some cases the Nexus S is smoother.. actually it's smoother in all cases except for 1080p videos and some web browsing.
I expect it to improve with time though.
Same thing happened to the nexus s right after it was released.

4.0.3 stock doesn't exist. You can only get a 4.0.3 ROM for the time being.
Try swapping in the exynos processor.
That should do the trick.

So basically after reading that, this means that due to the higher resolution the GN will always have a slower not as smooth UI? Damn this definately doesnt sound good.
Ill try with a new rom and kernel tonight and if it doest help, looks like my GN will be up for sale.
I happen to like my devices with an eye candy smooth UI.

WOW, really? You are going to ditch on one of the best overall devices on the market because of a slight hitch? By all accounts 4.0.3 takes care of it anyway. No phone is flawless but this one will be supported by Google and get updates for at least 18 months. But ya, loose the phone with the best screen on the market and the latest OS... ;-) spoiled

On many apps.....the slowdowns may be attributed to ICS incompatibility. More specifically, inability to utilize the hardware acceleration the GN pocesses. Go to settings, then Dev tools and turn on Force GPU Rendering. That should help with many incompatible apps that are running poorly. At least until the app is optimized for ICS and its capabilities.

You're messing with my zen thing, man !
When I pay a cellphone 600$+, and expect the "best" Android phone out there, I want it to AT LEAST be smooth and look good. Because what's that "best screen on the market" for?! To have a peak of all that eye candy. Now, part of eye candy for me is the smoothness of the UI.
Now that it doesn't bother you guys, that's fine, but it does bother me!
I'm not even talking about the cheap built quality, no Gorilla Glass, poor battery life etc...
I was expecting a lot more coming from Google and especially for the amount of money they want for cellphones nowadays.
/Rant

Even after we told you the problem and how to fix it, you're still complaining.
Here's what you do (hopefully you read this part):
1. Return the Gnex
2. Use the $600 to buy yourself a white and a black 4S
3. ???

It won't come to the SGH-T989 unless there is a maintainer that steps forward to help manage it. I'm considering picking this phone up or the 4G Amaze. I haven't decided. If I pick this one up, I'll work on deving and porting CM9 for it and work on being a maintainer. But alas, this comes down to my contract on my Vibrant lol

I';m guessing we might get a ICS by summer because a lot of people have skyrockets.
Cyanogenmod said its "in the oven" for skyrocket and 989 but well behind the other devices they are working on. Mainly due to their build computers getting upgraded. They said a couple weeks and they will be back full speed. Full speed on our devices? Maybe not yet but its coming eventually.

You guys are sure in a hurry for s broken os no ics works perfectly except for the galaxy nexus and nexus s. Which still have major bugs why google put updates on hold. All other devices still have major or bugs. All you guys do here is cry that older devices have it before our device. The longer time you have to develop and work with something. The farther the development team has already have gone.
CM team doesn't not want to be responsible for you not being able to call 911 incase of emergency. Guess what the alpha cm7. People can't hear each other. Unless you have gps on. Which doesn't work all the time. That's a really big major issue. Don't you think?
I mean you can learn how to develop and make your own cm7. But oh wait good luck with that because Qualcomm have their hardware data sheets closed off to the general public. That means even cm team doesn't have access to them. They are waiting for samsung because these are proprietary driver which means even samsung has to wait on Qualcomm.
If you go get a new device you will. Have to wait till source code is released regardless. For the new processors. What's that you will be waiting again for cm yep. While older devices will be running CM9? Yes that's right! Unless source is released.

Ya know, what bugs me is that the HP Touchpad has CM9. And it wasn't even an Android device to begin with. I mean, come on.
Happily sticking with Darkside 2.5.1 until the official Samsung ICS release.

I don't think that is correct information. The Galaxy S has issues because it was brought over with very little testing, fixes have been pushed to it.
The GNexus is no longer considered a Google device because of the issues with Verizon. It will no longer get updates from Google, only the carrier. Any bugs that have yet to be fixed already will get a update some day. Thats why all the GNexus people are frustrated with Verizon.
GNexus has already been sent to the FCC for approval for Sprint and that one will be the official Google phone.

I believe you are partially correct. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as it is right now there are two versions of the Nexus: CDMA(Verizon) and GSM. So yes, the Verizon version is no longer supported, but the GSM one still is. That would mean the Sprint version and the GSM version are Google phones.

[ROM][Blended] GB Rocket - GS2ET - Abridged version

Hi fellow XDAers,
It have been picking the best of both working Droid roms that has come down lately from Sprint to get phone in working order.. Instead of working from ICS backwards, I've worked GB forwards on the main parts... Forgive the choppy sentences... Not enough coffee yet lol
1. Odin'd back to EL29 OTA proper and rooted. Which rebooted.
2. Odin'd the FF18 modem. Rebooted.
3. Re installed a few utilities - ghost commander, quick reboot, Ti (to pull zipped apk's of the better parts of ff18 and email them to my laptop. whet I plan to integrate them. Also planning to do the same once I get the GB portion s downloaded)
4. Integrate into new ICS or JB stock ota
So far got 1 & 2 completed. Running to the hospital for a bit to visit my mom and then have to do some house work (a woman's work is never done.... I hate cleaning! lol)
Then back to my geekdom (for world domination (j/k))
And see if I can make headway on next items..
Screen print attached.
EDIT: speed test, battery shots jusy attached

No, i'm not releasing it as my own ROM... That would be illegal, now wouldn't it... Please read the entire thread. I am reverse envineering it to make it work with what was stable in GB EL29. And thought I would share to be kind to the other SSGS2ET owners who just got screwed by sprints preemptive release of ICS 4.0.4.
If a Mod want to change the title and remove the word ROM that's fine by me.

Your project is actual development and not just changing colors. Really hoping to see this working soon.

Thank you!! See there is a voltage issue that keeps turning off 4G when on wifi... There's also a runaway program that i'm still trying to find and change the timing on so it doesn't use up the battery and there is also something that prevents reattachment to Ti for one thing and that its goggles fault for changing the key with every install... Most apps can handle it but there are slot that don't recognize the phone and creates a problem especially if you've paid for it... its the guts basically that is causing the problem sort of like crossed wires throwing voltage.
Hope this helps, and when I get a chance, I will write a proper dissertation for those that don't unbend and insist on flaming me.

Is this mod/rom going to have a custom recovery/kernel? Or would i need to flash one with the install?

This argument should really be handled with PM's, not in somebody else's thread. I try my best not to get in the middle of things, but this is getting ridiculous. If you don't agree that it's development then report the thread and let the mods decide, don't attack the OP's spelling and time with XDA.
My Wicked Sensations rom is one of the roms that people are referring to as more of a theme and not development and I agree with them. But every phone section has themed roms just like this section. I don't consider myself a developer, and I have stated that on many occasions. I just try to share something that I like with others. But I do respect everyone else's work and don't insult it. If I don't like it, I move on.
So please respect somebody else's thread and don't trash it up this way.
I've cleaned this thread. However, it will remain closed for now. "Placeholder" threads are not allowed. As you probably seen why. Once a download link is provided and verified, then it will be opened.
Until then, I'm serious about what I said when I talk about it spilling over. Vacations will be handed out (again) if it continues. I don't care who you are, how many times you have pm'd me, how cool you think "you and me" are. Rules are rules.

Brain storming on how to attract more developers to develop for our phone.

Let me start by saying that I believe we have some of the best developers working on our device. These guys work tireless nights to my sure we have the best ROM for our phones. My question do you guys feel we have enough developers developing for our phone? If not what can we do as a community to attract more developers especially the developers that work on the AOSP Roms. Even though touch wiz is great it does have it limitations. I heard that google wallet is working on some of the cyanogenmod builds. The Galaxy S3 a pethera of developers. Just saying.
To get more Devs you need a more popular phone. The Note II size isn't for everyone. The SIII has been promoted like crazy and is still pushed hard by Samsung and carriers.
I don't see hardly any advertisement for the GNII. This plus the price tag being around the $300 range doesn't put it at the top of most people lists. Hopefully more will be coming on board soon.

I suspect what we need is to teach rise of us who have the phone how to develop for it. I know I have tried but without help I am not getting very far. I suspect we have a larger number of users here who are capable and interested in doing this than other phones.

Most of my friends want the phone but are currently in between upgrades. Some of my friends wasted there upgrade on the epic touch 4g and now have to wait 2 years to upgrade. I was think creating a funded to help a proven developer to get a Galaxy Note 2 preferable a developer who ported the cyanogenmod to the Galaxy S3. That phone is very similar to our phone so it be a matter of time before the developer figures it out and ports it to our phones. What do you guys think? The problem with our phone it is so new. So we are still in the infancy stages of development.

Note 2 not popular... What world u living in. Phone sold millions in its 1st weeks. The International version has a lot of development due to its popularity.

It's a fantastic phone and people I know love it. But they also tend to buy the GSIII over the Note. The GSIII has been around longer and holiday sales will make even more fly off the shelves.
I'm just saying that not as many people have the Sprint device, that's why the development isn't jumping like crazy. Typically the most popular phones are Flagship phones. Sprints advertising of this phone has been non existent. I've never even seen it shown on their home pages before, that's all I'm saying.

You don't watch much TV then. I see the Lebron James Note 2 ad ALL the time. I see it more than all the S3 ads combined these days.
Granted, it's not a Sprint ad, but is is a Note 2 ad. Plus it was a pretty good idea to use him, since his hands make the Note 2 look small

I like this idea. I would love to develop for it but I would need help getting started. I just have one little problem and that is there isn't much I wish to change. I don't have any desire for extra battery nor do I wish to make the phone faster. Sure I modded a few things but this is by far the best device I have had out of the box.
No disrespect to the great developers we have on this site but this is one of the few phones that I actually don't need any development for. It's perfect right out the box, if you're a touchwiz person.
Won't the S-Pen only work on Tw architecture? Why would you put an AOSP ROM on it?

I was thinking the same thing. Don't get me wrong, JellyBomb is an awesome rom but coming from nothing but HTC phones, I'm used to very active development with lots of variety. My girl buys nothing but Galaxy phones and I've always rooted and flashed roms to her phones and I've always seen the Galaxy forums jumpin. The only thing I can think of that this phone has working against it, is its size....it's obviously not for everyone. It's unfortunate because the size grows on you and spec-wise, this phone has unbelievable potential. It's still a baby though...Lets see what happens
I was trying to advise to many people to but the galaxy note 2 international version. Always the international version of a phone has more development but nooooo....everyone called me crazy lol and now they will official release 4.1.2 for xmas I am happy with my choice

On past "similar" devices flashing other roms was as simple as flashing a kernel/modem/build prop package for ones device
Has anyone looked into this?

^^ We could still get the ports if there were more devs around for this phone willing to put the time & effort in. The phones are pretty much the same across the board. All the international themes work on our phones. It's still too early *twiddles thumbs*

I have an AOSP rom and Spen works fine
For those wanting to learn, here is a great place to start with a ton of links: http://www.teamvenum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=322
And honestly as someone (slowly) working on my own rom, this community so far has been, let's call it uninspiring. People bad mouth roms all over the place because it's themed.
If you like stock, then why did you flash it? Is Not a secret that is themed.
And the users over here from what I have seen have been very demanding and don't appreciate much. People aren't using the search function and ask stuff that had been answered. Nobody knows everything, but it helps a lot if you read the threads and do a Google search before asking questions.
End rant. This phone will get more devs, just give it time. Or if you want someone specific, donate to help them get the phone.

Verizon HTC One First With Android 4.3 Update

http://www.sidhtech.com/news/verizon-htc-one-android-43-update-att-sprint-tmobile/10017607/
One of the best devices on the market which runs Android is the HTC One. One of the biggest competitors is the Samsung Galaxy S4 and this recently got an update OTA to take away the lags.
So how good is the HTC One? People want to know if the handset will get Key Lime Pie, which is said to be coming out this year. Android 4.3 has come out and there has been a great deal of interest in it. The HTC One is to be the only Android device from HTC to be getting the update.
We have heard a tip from the source at HTC before and he has been correct.
The source told us that the Jelly Bean 4.3 update is now with the carriers in the US, just weeks before the HTC One got Android 4.3. So it looks like the US carriers could have had the update for quite some time.
So it must mean that the HTC One T-Mobile version could be getting the update to Jelly bean 4.3 around August or September. However we would not be surprised if the update arrived at AT&T and Sprint in the summer too.
If Verizon have Jelly Bean 4.3 then they could be the first to launch it alongside the handset, as at the moment they do not offer it.

This reinforces the notion that carriers strategically release or withold updates to try to get more sales at the expense of the consumer. It would be nice if Sprint drops 4.3 within a month, but its likely unlikely.

How did that junk article reinforce that notion?.... It just said the update is supposedly with carriers...that's it.
The only time something is held ever is when a new device is about to launch, and even still that is an extreme rarity. What people don't typically realize is when carriers get the update it takes typically 3weeks to test and approve said update. 4-6weeks if its an OS upgrade too and not just a patch. They have to test and send back to HTC then test again...process takes time.

It's just that Sprint is still sitting on the 4.2 update and now 4.3 and Key Lime Pie is around the corner shortly thereafter. Looking at the big picture, it is plausible that the release cycle is delayed to boost sales. There should be a new flagship phone sometime next year in the first half, possibly launching with Key Lime Pie. Then these 4.2 and 4.3 delays add up only to satisfy users wanting updates to get close to launch date.

Is it me, or is it always the US carriers "testing" these updates for months and months? We are a nation of lies and greed so it doesn't surprise me honestly

The dev edition has been confirmed to be skipping 4.2.2 because it is a "minor update."
I think what Google did is it gave out the 4.3 source to OEMs like Samsung and HTC before it announced it. So, HTC (and therefore, the carriers) has had 4.3 ready for a while. We may be seeing the 4.3 update soon.

The proof is in the... Tweet.
And I am actually excited that we're skipping 4.2.2 because a few people were reporting certain issues, and if HTC thinks that 4.2.2 was a minor update, then I can't wait to see what 4.3 will bring.
The way I read that article is that Verizon may be the first to offer the one with 4.3 out of the box, not the first to offer 4.3.

While I hope any update news is true, its all hearsay at this point.
There are so many grammatical errors in there I wouldn't trust it. Also stop saying carriers have the updates. No one has ever come out and said the carriers have 4.2.2 and yet everyone assumes they held onto it in the comments. With the way the Verizon HTC One is realsing with 4.2.2 it is almost painfully obvious HTC and Verizon had some sort of deal.

I don't think you understand what the word "business" means in the real world. Companies could care less whether the consumers receive the update in a timely fashion. If it were both cost-effective and a good move business-wise, updates would be cranked out as fast as possible. But it's not. So they don't.
Jason Mackenzie is answering A LOT of questions on twitter today... Allegedly he wants 4.3 on the dev edition by the end of September if not earlier.
This is great if true. I don't mind waiting for 4.3 because there are a lot of apps that are incompatible with it right now, like HBO GO. I have 4.3 on my Nexus7 and sometimes I wish it was on 4.2.2 so that all my apps are working like they are on my One.
