How's your T-Mobile data speeds? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

So I just got the TMo Note 3. My previous phone was the HTC One. How is all of your speeds doing?
I'm in the greater Los Angeles area. At my work with my HTC One I was getting 1 more bar of service and LTE speeds of about 8Mbps during work hours. I'm a little disappointed to see the Note 3 is only averaging betweeen 2-4Mbps down and surprisingly 5-6Mbps up... I've been running speed test all day for the last 2 days all with similar results. I know I'm in a heavily populated area and even the 5-6 I was getting on my One was modest but 2-4 is just way too slow. Did I get a bad one?
I even changed my apn to:

Where are you? I'd kill for 10.

19 down , 4 up. Next to freeway and AZ Cardinals stadium.

I ran a test at my house last night around midnight and I was still only getting like 5-6Megs. My ONE at that time I know for a fact was getting better than 14 Megs down.
Dang, did I get a bad unit?
Were you guys getting comparable speeds on your previous LTE devices? Mine are way off

I was getting 26+ down and 12 up on Verizon. This is my first T-MOBILE phone

My area just got upgraded to 10x10 LTE so the speeds are really good I get between 40 Mbps - 51 Mbps

I get 42 down and 16 up in my house. I never use wifi lol

The network speed in my apartment was close to 0 with sprint (150+ ping, 0.5 down, 0.1 up on a good day). On my Note 3 I'm getting 10+ down, 1+ up, with a ping under 30 on average. Love it

Currently mine is 0up and 0down, as I think T-Zones is getting me blocked.
I was getting around 8MB/sec (So, 40mbps) down for the first day I had it though.

Sorry misread the OP

You should use fast.t-mobile.com APN, that APN is 3GPP Release 10 complaint and allows for higher speeds. Epc.tmobile.com was launched with G1 and is compliant only to 3G release 7.
Also, mms proxy should never be set. That field should be alsway be blank
---------- Post added at 03:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:45 AM ----------
Server should also not be set. Do you have a good reason for thinking these settings are needed or perform better?

I get around 21mbps down and 10 up

That's Dallas typical speeds and can even hit high 60s to low 70s in Lewisville.

T-Mobile EDGE Too Slow!

I'm getting some really poor performance from the EDGE internet connection sharing on my Dash. I have 4 signal bars. When I was using my Sony GC89 PCMCIA data card I regularly got 200K-240K down now I'm getting like 34K down (slower than my dial-up modem).
When I first started using internet connection sharing on the Dash I was getting better speed. I recently switched from the $49.00 T-Mo VPN with hotpsot (no line) to the $19.99 T-Mo Total Internet with hotspot and a phone line. I dont think this is the problem but I don't know for sure.
Anyone with a Dash got any ideas why I would get such slow speeds on EDGE data?
Probably, because T-Mobile is not focusing on the Edge network anymore. They are into the new "3G" network now. This is their new baby. It's not just theirs. I am just saying, this is where all their "chips" are right now.
My god man, god is smiting you that is why you now get 20k. I could only ever get 80-160k. Usually 80-120. I didn't know edge could even go that fast. I think it is a shared resource. It is choppy as hell around lunch in downtown philly. If there are new users and they haven't upgraded capacity your speeds should decrease. Is it the same on weekends .. off hours?
Opera Mini is about 2-3 seconds for everything. I wish I could figure out how to get it to work on a tethered computer. That is something I'll work on.
I'm gonna get the released today tablet hp tx2500. Looks just about perfect can't wait. I'm gonna need all the unfirewalled wireless internet access I can get.
Mine seems just fine, for T-Mobile that is LOL

Do you need another service account set up specifically with your wireless card? Can you clone your sim card to use with the card? Did your dash previously get about the same speed as your wireless card? Dude last time I visited my family in greece they were paying 75$ for 256k dsl. Even with the huge latency issues wireless brings I never knew people actually reached the max of edge speed in some places. Well probably everywhere but philly...
Outerdepth - Yes 3G is in NY now - we can only dream - I just checked Verizon, Sprint and ATT in the Chicago area and they all want $60 for unlimited (5GBmax) data. Wonder if T-Mobile will give up true unlimited on 3G and follow suit or break the trend.
Yianaki - The T-Mobile network reports connection speed at 214K but it frequently bursts past 240K. I imagine the average speed would be more along the lines of 160K-180K but I'm only getting 24K-32K now.
Bupahs - Yes your speed report is what I was accustomed to using the Sony GC89 data card. I wonder if it's the dash or the fact that I had them change my internet plan. What plan are you on. $19.99? What device are you using?
Yianaki - I just recently got the Dash and changed my plans from a data only line for GC89 and a voice line with T-zones to myFaves Family 2 line with $19.99 data on the other line and no data on the original data line. Whew. I had been noticing problems with web pages and emails loading images and slowness. I just did the speed test today and was shocked. I really think this started when they moved the data to the other line.
I'm going to call T-Mobile right now after seeing Bupahs speed report. I update the thread later.
Update: Just called T-Mobile and the said they will put in a service call to check the area within ten miles. If things don't improve in 72 hours I am to call in again.

I have the HTC Dash (T-Mobile). I'd say it was due to them changing your plan, they (T-Mo) always seems to "mess something up" when switching plans LOL
im by logan square and im having the same issues with the edge too i thought i was the only one!
The bandwidth gods have punished me wrongfully - who can defeat the gods?
But seriously it's either the switch to the other plan or the T-Mobile Dash radio is inferior to the Sony GC89. But I briefly remember testing the Dash before the switch was completed and it performed equally well. I got hosed by the switch.
i just went to speedguide from my dash in opera mini and got some crazy numbers

551kbps up
thats with the $20 unlimited edge plan

I got the same type of thing as well. However, keep in mind, that Opera Mini's data runs compressed through their servers, so it isn't a real test in that sense (but it IS good in the way that it works in terms of browsing).
If you want to do a real test, use IE I guess (I could never get it to forward correctly to the results page).
I used some other test page with IE and saw something like 125kbps down, though. That seems more realistic.
To add to this, make sure your Wi-Fi is turned off. lol

anyone else experiencing slow 3G on cricket?

I'm chalking this up as a LOS issue because I've had an HTC hero, incredible and incredible 2 on this same account getting upwards of 1 MBits per second and this GS II is getting more like 20-60 kbits per second which is basically not even usable. I can't stream YouTube, can't hardly surf the web, can barely navigate google maps and it takes 2-3 minutes to get a GPS lock. Help? :-(
chris
Don't feel bad I live in Indiana and cricket has always been slow from what I've seen.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I think you failed to see the point. We are talking about three different previous androids getting upwards of 1 mbits/sec vs. this GS II getting 70 kbits/sec. Clearly something is wrong. It doesn't matter if I have full bars of signal my ping in milliseconds is around 800 and my downloads/uploads are shockingly slow. Looking for a recommendation on a different modem or different PST settings though I've flashed my fair share of androids to cricket with great success so I can safely assume this is a modem issue. Problem with that is that I keep hearing that EL29 was the best gingerbread modem for this phone, really just hoping that someone can help me out.
Chris
I have seen side by side tests that would indicate that the Samsungs have a weaker antanae than the HTCs
Just flashed FF18 with Calk's E4GT EL29 ROM and speedtest.net app can't even find a server. Web browsing seems slower. Ugh
Chris
Have now flashed FC18, FD19, and FF18 (latest) all of which made my ping basically double but didn't seem to change my downstream or upstream. It did however disconnect from Cricket 3G / 1X whatever I was connected to at the time more frequently than EL29 does.
Good grief. I still have my HTC Incredible on another line with cricket same plan same signal getting 400ms or less ping (E4GT gets me 800+) and 400kbps-1mbps vs the E4GT's 20-70kpbs. This is insane...???!!!

Yes, get used to it. The S1/S2 **** poor antennas are well documented. The only thing u can do is flash diff modems until u find 1 that works well for ur area...other than that, make sure ur using a rom with 3g tweaks built in, or apply the tweaks urself. ....im not sure, but u could also try flashin a verizon prl and force roaming with Roam Control....
go to www.cricketuser.com they are a didicated website for flashing phones to cricket. When i use to play around with cricket you have to find out if your APN files is proxy server or non proxy
Thank you so much for your replies, I did get the slow 3G issue fixed. My HA SPI and AAA SPI were 4D2, and 4D2 when it needed to be 12C and 2 respectively. Also changed the registry retry timeouts to match my previous HTC Hero, Incredible, and Incredible 2 at 1750 ms instead of 2000ms but I doubt that setting had anything to do with it. Now seeing a normal 500 kbps or higher downstream
Chris
And yes I am using proxy settings via the app Anycut (activity: proxy settings) due to me being grandfathered into the $40 unlimited everything plan. I know I could pay $15 extra per month for the Android Plan and get slightly faster 3G without the need for the proxy settings but it just doesn't seem worth it to me.

No data with HTC One X (S720E) on $30 "Walmart" plan

Using a T-Mobile micro SIM which works fine for voice in my S720E (factory unlocked intl model).
I cannot get the phone to connect for Data. It says "Disconnected" right under Mobile Network (which is turned on).
The phone built-in SIM Toolkit won't work either to pick up the APN settings from the SIM.
So I entered the APN settings manually under Settings > Mobile Network > Access Point Names - I finish off, hit save, it says Saved but then a message appears and says No SIM detected (that's not true obviously).
These are the APN settings I found via Google. Are they correct for the $30 pre-paid monthly "Walmart" plan 100 mns/ UL text and web?

More than likely you got one of the newer micro Sims that aren't capadable with this phone. The ones with a picture of people on there. Sound weird I know. But the older tmo Sims that's all white and just says tmobile on it will work and get you some edge speeds. Only downside is most stores won't have those anymore.

Thank you. I had seen that thread and got the APN settings from there. But I hadn't paid attention to the discussion at the end.
I just got it from a corporate T-Mobile retail store yesterday.
I suspected the SIM might be the problem but then it works on my other phones so....
The micro SIM shows "TM9190" on the gold platted contacts side and version 50.05 on the back side. I'll go today to try and get one older than 50.05.

Why would you want to use a T-mobile based plan on a phone that can't get T-Mobile 3/"4"G anyway? (HOX doesn't support AWS band...) You need an AT&T Straight Talk SIM to use high speed data on your phone, not a T-Mobile one.

T-Mobile has or will have 3G on 1,900MHz very soon. It's already on in some parts of Manhattan, places I go to like Fort Lee, NJ, Woodbury, NY etc.
And it's cheap: $30. Straight Talk has a horrible track record of cutting people off etc. Can't risk losing my #.
On at&t, I'd just get the $50 unlimited everything (non-smart phone plan) on pre-paid and pop the SIM in an factory unlocked phone and it works.
In both cases, it's even cheaper if you buy refills online with discounts at places like callingmart.
More info for the ones like me with this problem:

With T-Mobile, only "non-GBA" micro SIM cards version 50.01 will work on the HTC One X S720E (factory unlocked) to get data.

Dude, if you can still get one, I'd happily pay for it and the shipping (preferably overnight or express), plus like a $15 commission for finding and sending it to me.
I've been looking all over for these and have almost given up hope. I am seriously debating switching to an S3 (although, I really don't want to), so any help you could provide, I would be forever in your debt. I am sick of being stuck with only wifi for my data when I am paying a 5GB data plan on the phone itself.
You can PM me and we can figure out all the details.
Sure, np. PM on its way.

T-Mobile offers 2 different $30 plans for prepaid. One provides 100 minutes, and unlimited text and data (5GB at unrestricted speeds). The other is a combined 1500 text and minutes and 30MB of data.

[Q] LTE speed drop

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that their LTE transfer speed drops after 3-4 seconds of high speed bursting.
I can consistently see this in the speedtest.net app, and also in large google market downloads.
The problem seems to kick in when the transfer speed goes over >~24mbps, and then it will just suddenly drop right down to pretty much 0, before slowly continuing at a much reduced speed. Same happens with the upload speed, but it seems to kick in around ~20mbps or less.
I've seen this at various places around the Bay Area in CA, so its not related to any local radio towers :-/
I hope my radio is not a lemon.. I first saw this when the phone was straight out the box, but I just shrugged it off. But its persistently there... (and I've 0x1'd my know now..)
Check out some T-Mobile specific forums for your answer. I don't think it's your phone. Try setting your phone for HSPA+ on the 1900mhz band to see if that is different.
It's believed that tmobile is still working on their tiered QoS. If you have unlimited you get bumped, for now.

Thanks, I will try the band idea.

i get this issue as well. one thing i have noticed is that when you download a large app (50+ megs, which is actually a small app..) it will throttle me to less than 500 kbps after the first 20 seconds or 50-60 megs of progress. it stays there and never speeds back up.. i have cancelled many 100+ mb apps during downloading because they were literally constantly slowing down to the point where i didn't think they'd even finish until i hit my home wifi point. it does this on stock rom, darthstalker rom, saber kernel, compulsion kernel, stock kernel... i don't think it's the device, i think it's the service. going to keep on testing different combinations and see if i can find a fix irregardless. slow and insanely inconsistent data speeds are gonna make me go back too ATT even though i just switched to T-Mobile 2 days ago. a reliable connection is worth the extra $40/month to me.
*it's also worth noting, since i activated the TMo service yesterday, i haven't once seen more than two bars of service although i am in an area that is not largely populated and vastly surrounded by "great connection" area on T-Mobile:s page.

Are you on the 5GB/$30 prepaid plan? I wonder if the throttling is an unofficial policy on the prepaid plans.
Nope, on the normal plan that was supposed to take the place of the contracts. I get a bill at the end of the cycle like I did with att. Still happening. Its like anything I download hits a throttle after the first 200 megs. Lte speeds of 3-6 megs per sec, then bam... Sub 1 meg per sec the rest of the download. Even if there's 1gb+ left to go.

I've been discussing this same problem over on HowardForums forums for a while: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1814258-Video-Streaming-being-throttled?p=15278529

Recently, I've personally concluded that it has to do with T-Mobile working on towers in my area. There was a period of about a week or so where I was experiencing odd performance on both HSPA+ and LTE, where speeds will be fantastic for about 3-5 seconds, before dropping WAY down. Things have greatly improved recently. I did several tests the other day in several locations, and only one tower in particular resulted in the odd speeds in multiple tests. The next day, things were perfect. Then again, they recently went from 5x5 LTE to 10x10, so that could've had something to do with it.
My recommendation is to wait it out.
FYI: I'm on the $30/mo. prepaid plan (5GB @ high-seed, unlimited @ 2G).

Looked into this, seems like it is just for tethering? I'm looking for regular data speed increase with no tethering. Thanks

Here are the defaults. Remember, when you make changes always have a backup plan. In this case a screen shot would do.
You most likely have a signal strength issue. No tweaks can fix that.

I had a screen shot of the first number not the second one. Thanks! Unfortunately still no improvement at all on the speeds.

i think its just your area. i download "stuff", use netflix and run XBL with no issues other than the occasional jump from lte to 3g. but i average between 50-100gb a month.

I had the same issue with sprint. Was at or less than 1MBps up and down for a full week. I live in Las Vegas and they claim to "have the best signal in Las Vegas." I switched to T-Mobile and never had anything below 22MBps down and up, one time I got 56MBps down and 45MBps up. Sprint throttles data, and does a good job at it (while T-Mobile and Experian will give out your personal info ).
