s4 mini or htc one mini? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that on paper the s4 mini has the better specs. I'm hesitant to buy the s4 mini because samsung smartphones tend to lag even with the good specs (i have a s2 right now). Can someone who has used a htc one mini and s4 mini tell me how they compare in real life?

I didnt see any difference, apart from touchwiz vs sense, between the s4 mini and the one mini.
But i prefer running cyanogenmod anyway so maybe i just didnt want to see any difference

don't remember all the specs of the htc one mini, but I think it has the better resolution. Anyway I choose the s4 mini because the htc one mini doesn't offer a micro sd slot.

I've never gotten much hands-on time with the one mini so I can't give a good comparison except that the one mini felt sturdier due to its metal frame.
Also, the S4 mini doesn't lag. Especially after installing custom roms

lag? but....wait, you really want to use stock ROM?
install cyanogenmod, it's awesome!!

The S4 Mini is higher performance than the S3 (yes, S3, not just S3 Mini). I've never seen it lag, neither on stock nor on CM ROMs. Note that I don't play any demanding games, though.
In synthetic benchmarks, the S4 Mini is also considerably faster than the HTC One Mini. Both phones have the same CPU, but it's clocked about 20% faster in the S4 Mini than in the One Mini. Furthermore, the S4 Mini has 50% more RAM. The S4 Mini has a lower resolution display than the One Mini, which may be a con for you but it certainly helps in providing a super-snappy GUI.

Had the same dilema, but at the end went for S4 mini, as it has more advantages (at least for me - removable battery, memocard and easy to manage with Odin).

S4 mini upgrade from S2 worth it?

Hello!
Can someone who has used these two phones tell me pls if it's worth the upgrade?
1.Do you feel that extra processor clock speed and the extra 500mb ram?
2.How does the qHD AMOLED screen on the mini compare to the S2 AMOLED Plus display (is the slighty increased resolution noticeable? how is the color reproduction - the white)?
Well let's put it this way. GSMArena did a full review complete with benchmarks. The s4 mini has 2 krait 300 cores, the s2 and s3 have 2 and 4 cortex A9 cores respectively. S4 mini uses the adreno 305 whereas the s2/3 use the mali 400mp (not sure if they have the same core count though)
The s4 mini with its 2 cores beat the the s3 in every benchmark except for Antutu. S3 was 1000 points higher, due to having 2 more cores no doubt.
*EDIT: After running Antutu on my phone, the S4 Mini is actually faster than the S3 in Antutu.
As for RAM all I can say is that out of the 1.32Gb available, 776mb is in use.
Concerning the screen, I can't help with that. This is my first phone using AMOLED.

thank you it would be great if someone who used the phones in real life could tell us how the two compare.
my s2 uses 520ram with 3 pages filled with widges. the 776mb used on the mini are with no widgets and one page screen?
Alright cleared my RAM. Went to home screen then checked my RAM again. 668mb used. 6 home pages with 3 of them full of widgets. The other 3 are just filled with app shortcuts.

I used an S2 while looking for a new phone when my Motorola Razr was stolen. Now I have the S4 mini, and I really, really enjoy it.
1. Yes, the S4 mini is a lot smoother, although the CPU is not the newest generation. The two cores do their job perfectly fine, and as the smartphone scene looks today, I can't see why you'd need a faster CPU. Besides, this CPU uses a lot less power than the newer generation quad cores.
2. Color reproduction is a lot better than S2. White is whiter, bright is brighter, colors are more colorful, black is.... Well, you get it. It's an upgrade. Also, the slightly higher resolution is just what this screen size needs. Perfect.
S2 vs S4 Mini
I upgraded a couple of weeks ago from the S2 to the S4 Mini, and still use both, although the S2 not so much any more, so here is my opinion:
1 - Yes, you do feel the difference in speed, everything happens that little bit smoother and faster, specially when you use the S2 and then the S4 mini right afterwards.
2 - here I don't notice that much difference, to tell you the truth. Maybe the colours are a touch more vivid.
Is it worth the upgrade? in my opinion yes. I wanted a small phone, the S3 and S4 are way too big for me, the mini is a bit lighter and more narrow then the S2, feels nice in my small hand, so I'm glad I switched.
I hope this helps.

thx!
I got the S4mini as my 1st android device and i can truly say that im thouroughly enjoying it...
I came from a BB, and wanted a practical phone for my needs, which are mostly messaging. The flagship phones (HTC One, GS4, Xperia Z) are way too much excess for me.
Friends of mine with S2's are seriously considering the S4 mini for the size and for "futureproofing" as the specs are good enough from what they say
so the S4 mini suits my needs perfectly. Everyone I know cant stop commenting that its the "perfect size"
Hope you enjoy it if you get one
Here's a nice benchmark comparison.
My device is the S4 Mini.
Used an s2 briefly before getting the s4 mini and I corroborate with the above posters about the significant increase in performance.
Some games which feel jerky on the s2 runs smooth as butter on the s4 mini.
You should upgrade! I had i9100 and now i got i9192
I'm completely satisfied! This phone rocks...
To answer the first question in short, then yes - it is in fact worth upgrading the S4 mini. But I believe that it is only necessary if you haven't rooted your SGS2 and flashed a lightweight rom, haven't bought a new battery and it still works.
I have had my S4 mini (I9195) for one 1½ month - and I think it works as a very good upgrade for the S2 if you still want the medium sized screen and are not too focused on the speed. But I actually to think that the S4 mini is rather speedy - speedy enough for me.
I can recommend rooting the phone and installing CM 10.1 on it - as I have noticed that free RAM increases, and battery doesn't drain nearly as fast as stock ROM. Besides that I also think it picks up even more speed.
Just my 2 cents...
S4 mini is faster in interface and games. But game compatibility is very bad. S4 mini can run games with better graphics but in real on S2 you can run many more games with normal FPS. And with third-party software you can achieve the same smoothness of interface as well as S4 mini.
S4 mini is very poor quality of materials. It becomes shabby in one month, it's back cover is glossy and fingerprint magnet. Screen also covered with scratches in one month.
S2 have very high quality body, scratch-resistant back cover. S2 have LED indicator, USB-host (requires no power), videout by means of mhl. But S2 have not NFC and GLONASS that are present in i9195. Also S4 mini is significantly smaller.
S2 have lots of unofficial tweaks and ROMs. On S4 mini you can only flash CWM and root (I know of CM, but it not full functional now).
The final choice is yours!
On the contrary, my S4 Mini still looks great after 2 months. CM is fully functional and I encounter no issues with the latest nightly.
Game compatibility is an issue with the developers of the games but that is true that it is a downside as it is not such a recognised phone and thus developers tend to not add it in the supported list. Most major games are available though.
The lack of MHL and USB-OTG is a deal breaker for many so that's a key point you will want to look out for.

Is this a software or hardware limitation? If it's soft, then it's quite possible it could be added later by custom roms.
That I'm not so sure. There doesn't seem to be any developers looking to add support for it though.
It probably will have to be a kernel-level implementation?
Can someone comment on the battery life on the S4 mini if compared to S2? Thanks
S4 Mini, Worthed ☺☻☺
GSNAréna is a good page!
But in total, the S4 Mini is a Very Good Phone!
It also offers LOSSLESS Digital Zoom up to x2.0 at FullHD! (and full x4.0 at HD 720p.)
It's got 8MP Camera, Gorilla Glass 2 and AndroiD Jelly Bean . But don't ever Upgrade to KitKat! Be beware of it.
...but it's also got this Loved♥ Camera User Interface from the S4! (Note 3, all S4 Models, Variant of S4 Zoom and Mini)
In total, it's aproxmintly as good as the Galaxy S3 and S3 Néô.
...always reminds me to IAmTheOneTheyCallΠΣΘ.

The S4 mini and ←Ƶoom look Exactly the Same from one side. But the S4 Ƶoom has the Gorilla Glass 3. The S3 has GG2 and the S2 GG. (Siƶe≈First Galaxy S aka Galaxy Sunshine.)

S4 TouchWiz functions on S4 mini?

TouchWiz S4 Mini was gutted in terms of some cooler TouchWiz function available on the regular S4, namely:
Air View, smart stay, smart scroll, air gesture, multi Window, TV remote, etc.
However, I have seen they are porting S4 room into regular S3. I would imagine it should be even easier to do it with S4 mini (especially, as pre-sale versions already had (some of those?) features that were later disabled).
Is there a good chance for a rom that will contain those S4 things that are now missing from S4 mini?
This is one of the main question I ask myself while deciding whether I should get S2 or S4 mini, as S3/S4 is more of a spade, than a mobile phone.
There's TV remote on s4 mini (ir blaster )
Also, does the S2 have those features? If it doesn't then you might as well get the S4 Mini for the performancd

No, S2 doesn't have those features but is 100 euro cheaper than S4 mini, so I would like to know if there's a point of that price difference.
So the remote is there (I don't care much for it). How about chances to get the rest of the features with a S4 rom port?

The things that the S4 Mini will never get are things like Air Gestures since the Mini doesn't have the front facing IR sensor that the S4 has so it can't detect movement.
However things like smart scroll is POSSIBLE in a ROM since that just uses the front-facing camera, so smart scroll is a software exclusion not a hardware issue. As for multi-window that too is software related so MAYBE a ROM might have it but remember that is some serious work so you may never see it.
As for Smart Stay....the S4 Mini already HAS that...
Regarding porting an S4 ROM to the S3/S4 Mini as I said above Air Gestures will NOT work since the IR sensor for that is missing.
Thank you, that explains quite a lot.
So I am still stuck between a S2 and its amazing development resources, or S4 mini, which for the moment has next to none. And I don't know if it will ever have enough to produce some really interesting ROM options.
S4 mini advantages:
- camera wide lens as in S3 (can someone confirm? I hate narrow lens of regular S4)
- slightly better screen
- slightly better camera
- slightly faster (don't really care, cause I never game, only multitask)
- might get some S4 functions down the line
S2 advantages:
- 100 euro cheaper
- huge amount of roms
- roms with changable dpi (remedies the issue of lower resolution, making it even possibly an advantage over S4 mini without this function)

Well it seems you have made up your own mind here
If being able to choose from large amounts of ROM's is what you want then maybe the S2 is what you want but remember the s4 mini only came out around July/August so not really a lot of time to create stable ROM's.
All I can say is that the S4 Mini is much more future proof in terms of hardware specs so that should count for something. If you wanted to stay stock then my argument would be simple since the s4 mini would definitely be updated by Samsung since it is a rather beefy phone but since you're interested in using various ROM's then the S2 seems like a winner at the moment. Main phone such as the S2 or S3 and S4 would get more ROM support since they were "flagship" phones when they came out.
Take this in mind, look at how much support the S3 Mini has gotten and then apply that to the S4 Mini (but in my opinion the S4 Mini seems to be more popular than the S3 Mini so it may get more ROM support, but give it some time)
To end off as a closing argument. If you want a phone NOW then I would say the S2 since you clearly want ROM choices BUT take into consideration that the S4 Mini has only been around for 1-2 months.
That's the best I can do, hopefully it has helped in your decision.
*Addressing one of your advantages of the S4 Mini, the S4 Mini is not slightly faster than the S2. It is MILES faster. It's getting +-19500 in Antutu 4 whereas the S2 is only getting +-10500
*Also what do you mean by wide lens camera? You mean like choosing a wide capture mode? The S4 Mini does let you choose full resolution 4:3 which are squarish or you can choose slightly lower resolution 16:9 pictures which are widescreen. But ye maybe I don't know what you mean.

No, that's not what I mean. If you look at the difference between the area of the picture S3 and S4 fit into the frame (check out S4 gsmarena review) you will be amazed by how much narrower is the lens of S4. That's a serious issue for me.
I read S4 mini's camera is nearly the same as S3's so I would like to know if the viewing angle is also as wide.
Also, do you think prices of S4 mini will drop when Note 3 comes out?
The speed improvement will be clearly reflected in your multitasking. Also note the amount of ram the s2 has vs s4mini.
The prices are unlikely to drop as they are of very different functions and target very different user groups.

s4 mini advice.

this might be a strange thing to ask. but as much as i love the s4 mini ive been offered a htc one mini as a straight swap. and while i know they have there slight differences am i likely to regret changing. only plus i can see it has over the s4 mini is its design build quality and a sharper screen. other than that i think the s4 mini is better in most places. what do other people think ?

Don't do it. You will regret it with your life. That person offered to trade it cause he likes the S4 Mini more that the HTC and he wants to trade it with you. YOU WILL REGRET IT! DON'T TRADE.
HTC one mini can't use external SD cards and it's camera has a lower megapixel count plus from reviews the camera underperforms despite having the technology on the HTC one that is supposed to improve the camera picture quality despite having a lower megapixel Count.
The ability for external SD cards was vital for me so I chose the s4 mini in the end. (like you I had a choice between both at the point of purchase)
S4 mini is overall a better, faster phone. From reviews, HTC one mini had slightly better music quality and looks.

[Q] Whats your s4 mini replacement device?

I have had this phone about 5 times longer than I have EVER had a phone, Its time for a new device! It has gotten very boring!
The s4 mini is a couple years old now but still king of the 4.3" market (with price and features included), what phones have y'all seen that will replace your s4 mini?
My phones must have an sd slot, 4.3ish inch screen(one thumb use), good cameras, LTE, and user replacable batteries.
The s5 mini would work for me if I could figure out how to move it to sprint from us cellular, z3 compact would be nice as well but the price is unjustifiable and I had a z1 compact and it had all sorts of bugs that I read arent too far off the z3c, the s5 mini Im still on the hunt for but I am also trying to make the switch over to cdma, the htc minis are solid phones but just not well executed with all its features being dull.
And to top it all off, the small screen market is so messed up I have almost gotten a few iphone 5s to play with! help me find a better phone!
Z3 has no custom rooms yet, especially no miui.
And it's very weak it would seem.

Idk the last time you looked bit about a week ago I seen they finally have full root for z3c so it'll be more appealing to the majority and speed things up. I still think I'd rather have a s5 mini over the z3c any day though.
I did try a z3c before I bought my s4mini, also the off screen buttons that Samsung have at the bottom makes quite a difference!

Definitely! I grew up on HTC phones and love my capacitive buttons. I tried the Nav bar buttons on a few phones and its just weird, but they usually come with a slightly bigger screen to offset. But it still reminds me too much of an iPhone where your screen is taken up by buttons rather than physical buttons
Well I've been living with the z5 compact for a few months and absolutely hate it. It's pretty much the only option out there right now but I still feel the s4 mini was a better phone. What have y'all come to decide on?
S7 mini is rumored, but will likely be large, xiamo mi5 mini will be perfect but no SD slot, HTC 10 mini is a rumor but probably too large with no SD slot as well. Any others I'm missing?
If anyone knows where to find a g800m s5 mini let me know, I'll be buying! Lol

Well i would definitely like to go with samsung ( yes I love debloated touchwiz)mini dual sim flagships( s7 mini duos?!?), but alas! it looks most unlikely. Besides, 4.3"-4.5" screens with flagship specs are scarce/not available. On a brighter note ZUK Z2 looks promising, tough its 5" may be Mi5 mini if that comes out. Waiting.
Note: My ideal phone: 1)4.5" display( with max 5" dimension). 2) Dual sim with microsd (No hybrid sim tray). 3)Snapdragon 652(will reduce the price compared to 820) with Quick charge 3.0. 4)Weight: 140 gms max. 5)up to date Touchwiz Ui with with themes store. 6)Notification LED(RGB).
Finally got my hands on a G800M s5 mini a couple months ago after selling off my z5c. I like the form factor, the waterproofness, the speaker loudness, and resolution. all around a nice phone except for dev support, the s4 mini blows it away in that department. If you get a chance to find one snatch it up!(it took me two years of searching) I still daily the s4 mini though, and probably will be for a few more years.. Also Im going to be trying the ios10 out for the SE once jailbreak comes out.
i still have my s4 mini in a drawer parked aside, it was my main device but i recently upgraded to the nexus 5x and i just love it! but the s4 mini remains one of my favorite android phones ever used.
I came to the S4 Mini from the diminutive Xperia Ray (awesome LegacyXperia roms!), so the Samsung felt quite large initially. Now I look at the Ray, which still serves me well as an alarm clock, and it seems so small...I cannot believe I used it for web, mail, maps, etc.
The S4 Mini is a great little device, and made even better thanks to the sterling work from @arco68. Every so often I search the net for news of any new 4.3" phones with decent specs and good developer support, but of course nothing exists. I considered a Z3C before getting the S4 Mini, but was put-off by the limited official CM development, which I consider to be essential.
I remain hopeful that a manufacturer will one day launch a well-specked, modern, and truly mini phone that devs can get behind. However, until that happens I will happily stick with S4 Mini, which does everything I need and is just the right size.
My S4 mini suddenly died (surprise) and I found the Galaxy A3 pretty fit, I can type better for some reason and had almost everything for my unique setup (I prefer KK, need xposed and WPS WPA working). Obviously not the same in performance and development (not CM 11 for this) but was surprisely good.

Screen on my S4 mini broke, what would you suggest?

Hello all!
After a lot of hard use, the screen on my beloved S4 mini broke and are not usable..
I don't think its really worth buying a replacement screen for this old phone, but looking around on newer models, i feel like we are really lucky to have this great community and development still around.
If your phone broke what new one would you get? Or would you get a new s4 mini again? I mean, 8mp camera, low resolution screen... The specs for this phone are really bad, but the roms/development around it is just amazing it seems. And yea, i have been really happy with it the last 2.5+ years.
The other problem is that i dont really want a phone that is much bigger than this one currently is, as i think it has a great size..

Money is not the biggest problem really, but i dont want to give 1000$ for a flagship phone, because it's not worth it imo
Yea i looked at the s5 mini, but as far as i can tell, its not really much better. The resolution is a little better and then it features a quad core cpu. But the rest is pretty much the same, and its already 2+ years old
What about the Galaxy A3? is a little bigger (4.7"), but has some better specs. But it doesnt seem it much supported by rom builders.. Or maybe the Xperia Z5 compact, but its like double the price of the S5 mini.
I wish samsung had continued their Mini series..

What about the Galaxy A3? is a little bigger (4.7"), but has some better specs. But it doesnt seem it much supported by rom builders.. Or maybe the Xperia Z5 compact, but its like double the price of the S5 mini.
I wish samsung had continued their Mini series..

well there is no big difference between the s4 mini and the A3 only in screen size and CPU which is not something will make me personnaly want it , and nooooooooo stay away from the Xperia if you love custom roms and those stuff , they are so complicated and some of them even dont accept custom roms ( locked bootloader ) i decided to never own an xperia again in my life even for free
try looking in the Galaxy J there are some great phones too

Hmm well the A3 has better screen, better cpu, better camera and better battery but it seems the battery is not removeable though.
Haha yea alright point taken about the xperia
the s4 mini is a good phone and it wins on more phones, i suggest you to replace the screen or to buy the new s4 mini plus
I was also considering a Z3 compact when seeing a replacement for my beloved Xperia Ray, but went for a refurbished S4 Mini. A great little phone, and excellent dev support (thanks to @arco68). I liked the sleek appearance of the A3, but it's bigger than the S4 Mini and Z Compacts.
Nice comparison tool here:

I'm also looking for a replacement. So far, I tried:
- Samsung S5 Mini - larger, pentile screen = text looks fuzzy, has GPS hardware issue
- Moto X 2013 - has 5.1 official, great screen, but: larger, software keys make usable space same as S4 Mini, no sd card, has radio standby bug
- Sony Z5 Compact - expensive, really blocky & heavy - not very compact when compared to all the others in list, software keys make usable space *less than* S4 Mini
- Samsung A3 2015 - larger & blockier, very light, nice materials, only Android 5.0 with probably no update, specs almost same as S4 Mini (Plus / VE)
- Samsung A3 2016 - even larger, pentile screen = text looks really fuzzy, worse than S4 Mini...
- Moto G LTE 2013 - larger, but ergonomic, heavy, Android 5.1, sd card, only 1 GB RAM & 8 GB space
So far, only A3 2015 & Moto G LTE 2013 are acceptable, but no real upgrades (apart from not being stuck on KitKat...).
There are other new phones similar in size with S4 Mini, but all are huge downgrades: Lenovo A1000, Samsung J1 Mini, chinese phones...
So far, staying with S4 Mini seems the only good option...
What about the S3 Mini
I have both the S3 and S4 Mini, I prefer the S3, S4 is stuck at 3G, also the S3 is a little smaller than S4, Just my humble opinion.
Keep s4 mini is best ever

I also checked the S3 Mini as soon as it was released. Unfortunately, it was also pentile, and at that resolution it was very visible.

I know, right? It's crazy to think that our ~3 year old phone is still one of the best compact devices available.
I had hoped that the iPhone 5SE would encourage other manufacturers to release new <4.5" devices with modern specs. Every so often I check to see if any new, compact Android phones have been announced, but it seems 5.0" is considered the 'sweet spot' these days.
It's a shame the One Plus 3 Mini rumour was quashed - that would have made for a nice little device.
Cheers!

Yea exactly. But my s4 mini is also getting a little 'boring' to look at, the same about the s5 mini, so i would like some other design. Sonys experia models looks pretty good, but they are all 5", like the xperia XA, it looks very good
If i chose to buy the galaxy A3, it would definitely be the 2016 edition

what do you mean that the text looks 'fuzzy'? I went to the store to look at it yesterday, i think it looked pretty good
The font lines are zig-zagged instead of straight because the pixels "borrow" subpixels from the adjacent ones. It's not obvious to anyone. I mostly read PDFs and browse desktop versions of sites, so the text is small and uses few pixels, so it makes a huge difference to me. I compared the 2016 model to the 2015 one, and to S4 Mini side by side, and the new model was worse than both.
