[Q] Screen Blacks Out - Should I send in to get fixed? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just yesterday, my phone was working fine and then all of a sudden, my phone's screen turns completely black. I have the T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 with Stock Rom and the factory kernel. I did root my phone and tried to reset the phone by trying to boot up the recovery. It doesn't give me the screen. There is also no Samsung Logo when I boot the phone but a screen with green dots all over. Then, it is on and I can guess my password and such so the touch screen is functional. The LED lights up and the soft keys light up as well. The sound works perfectly fine. So I assume something happened to the LCD screen? There are no cracks or what not.
Since it is rooted, I cannot just send my phone in for repair as the warranty is voided and I cannot uninstall anything or unroot my phone because I cannot see where all my icons are and what not. Any suggestions on what I can do or try? I got it not too long ago too which is a bit disheartening.

Dame thing happened to my gs3, I did reset it back to stock through odin and sent it in. They told me after I sent it in that it had damage to it that was my dually like dropping it or something. No that wasnt the case, the screen just slowly fizzled out. Pain in the ass

I actually don't know how to do a reset via odin. I flashed it and followed instructions/research but since I can't see what is on the screen nor boot it up to download mode or anything... I don't know exactly what to do. Well I think I can boot it up to download mode again. I don't think it will be a problem. I just can't do triangle away after that though after that.
In addition, I would still have root tools installed so wouldn't that give it away that it was rooted? Thus, gahhh this is annoying =( Sorry for ranting... Just very frustrated (like many phone users on here I'm sure).
Edit
I have it on stock rom though... I just need to unroot it... though I cannot see my screen to do anything about it =/

If you have USB Debugging enabled you can used adb to remove root, I believe.

Odin back to stock should do it. Especially, with a busted screen.

However, my issue isn't a broken screen. The screen itself appears to be fine and same with the digitizer. I don't see how flashing the stock rom will help. In addition, I don't think I can find my way around especially when the screen is all black. I may be able to because I have clockworkmod recovery on there. Just can't see any of the menus or anything.

flashing back to odin uses the phones download mode you dont need a custom recovery you just download the right files and put them in PDA in odin and flash them to your phone while its in download mode

Well the next issue is, it refuses to go into recovery mode or download mode. All I get when I try the button combination is a screen filled with tiny green dots.

do what he does in the video even though your phone doesnt show anything on the screen it probably still works so you can try this

Odin Mode?

Hi I have a purely stock intl Galaxy Nexus, I believe it is the Yakajxw version. This morning I went to my messages app and it loaded up the Flickr App instead. When I hit back it constanly went to some other app. So I powered down my phone and powered it back up and now its in Oden Mode showing a "Downloading.. Do not turn of target!!"
Is this a simple update and Im fine or is it somehow 'bricked'? Any way of fixing this? I have no knowledge of android phones and its a very important weekend for me, cant go without the phone!!
Thanks!
Mine did this once also. Use your volume controls until it says start. Then press the power button. Booted up just fine for me.
I'm also completely stock, unrooted, locked boot loader. I haven't had the desire to mod yet. I was on WP7 for 18 months and just recently came back to Android. I'm enjoying the stock experience so far. Modifications will come soon enough.

ODIN is a method of flashing factory images.
It really isn't downloading anything (not exactly sure why it would say that...dumb.)
You PROBABLY held volume- while booting.
This will put you in odin.
You can just boot up...you haven't changed/hurt anything.

If it's taking you directly to that screen, your bootloader got corrupt somehow. Follow the instructions in this thread to re-set-up your device.

I believe that it is called download mode because that is what it is doing: odin downloads the partition images to the device.

phone shuts down/reboots very often

So I thought I would give up my inexperienced life of flashing and possibly bricking my device(sent it in to get jtag repaired), so I attempted to put it back to stock. I got odin up and running, Downloaded(for the most part) the tar that would make it stock again. about 98% into the flashing it failed and made me a little nervous. I later remembered to flash the kernel, and with it, the phone booted up. Fine and dandy one day yadda yadda yadda.
Now comes day 2, and it just randomly turned off and booted again. it got to the little android boot screen, then shut down again, rinse repeat at different times of the boot process, add in some random shutdowns when I'm at the home screen and using my phone and there you have it.
I figured it was using an unfinished stock rom trying it's best to function, so I tried to put in clockwork mod. I did, but it was very difficult as I navigated through clockwork recovery, the phone would select things on its own, making the rooting process a giant pain. With that monkey on my back, I managed to root and install the juggernaut v.5 rom(which totally rocks) to see if the probably persists. The end result was it still happened, but when it didn't, I was able to work with it normally. At this point in time, I am trying to keep my phone turned on because if for a second the screen shuts off, the phone will start trying to shut itself down and game over. This is still very very annoying and was wondering if you fine people would happen to point someone thats green as grass with this stuff in the right direction

You have definitely earned my thanks for providing such hearty solutions! I am super paranoid now when it comes to downloading files like those. my major concern is if the files never download completely :O I followed what was in that first thread to tooth, and as I installed that md5 towards the end I got a giant fail. regardless, I thank you for the awesome support man:good:
Hmm, try reflashing your recovery. Mount your USB (If you cant, take out your SD card, and mount it on your PC) and place this file on the root of your SD card( Just easier to find this way)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/darksidetools/files/SGH-T989_ClockworkMOD_5.0.2.7.zip/download
Flash it, and restart recovery. Your recovery should act normal, and do a clean install of whatever ROM you wish. By the way, Juggs was my first DD (daily driver) to!!

Lol, no its CWM 5.0.2.7 or aka, CWM non-touch, I got that link from TDJ's OP, he so kindly provided us a link for it. From your OP, it sounds like CWM did not flash correctly, you can flash a recovery within a recovery, you just have to restart it or reboot your phone for it to take into effect. Do you have the T989 or T989D?
lets see

Did you do a clean install? Darkside Superwipe, flash ROM, reboot, wait ten minutes, then reboot?
Sent from AOKP Goodness :-D
Yeah unfortunately it is still randomly rebooting....washing lol
An update to this: all the same symptoms occur, but for some reason when I flashed darkside rom 3 the symptoms occurred less! For example, last night I was able to use this device for 4 hours straight without it acting up. I really wonder what the problem is. I. Mean the thing acts like an angel when in Odin mode, but when it comes. To cwm or anything else it tends to spaz out.
I too have this happening now. I don't know why its been doing it. I was running the latest aokp and than it started rebooting and shutting off. So I went back to my nandroid backup and still continues. Running darkside v7, and problem is still there. Anyone know why this is happening?
It started happening while listening to music.

So I went to a T-Mobile store earlier and they told me they can't replace my phone because I'm rooted and they think its the rom, even tho I showed them.
I have to odin flash the original stock rom and go back to T-Mobile to get it replaced.
Know any way you can flash back without an internet connection on a computer?

the only way i know how is through odin. I've done it a few times. at the end of the flashing I find that the phone turns itself off or something which marks it down in odin as a FAIL..when in actuality it flashed....it just needs a kernel flash and it'll all be candysticks and lollipops.
At this point in my phones life though, however, it is increasingly harder to do anything in clockwork since the button is fudged up. I think I might have to pony up 35$, but if you can Odin your phone back to flash and tell T-Mobile/Samsung about it, you can probably get the repair for free

[Q] Bricked: No recovery mode, only download mode

My SGS2 was working all morning until I pulled it out of my pants after class today.
It was on rooted stock ics, and I have no idea how it could have bricked in the first place.
First symptom was a bootloop. Since I wasn't anywhere near a computer, I decided I would just factory reset/wipe data and cache from the recovery.
After the phone rebooted, it would not proceed further than the "SAMSUNG" screen. I could not enter recovery mode at this point.
I get home and I odin the same stock 4.0.4 ics onto the phone, as well as 4.0.3.
As of now, only download mode works. Every time I try to boot to recovery mode, it gets stuck at the "SAMSUNG" screen. Normally, the Samsung logo would have a glowing effect, but it seems to be frozen now. The animation for the battery is also frozen when it is plugged in when turned off.
Seeing as it can at least get into download mode, I am assuming there is still hope in fixing it without having to send it somewhere else?
Help is much appreciated :]
what recovery are you using?
what do u mean odin the stock ics? if your recovery isnt working, then just odin into a older recovery of cwm, here is the tar file http://www.mediafire.com/?nz97zv1g13d1tcz after that you will have your recovery back working again.
So what I did was reflash the stock kernal in hopes of unbricking my phone. Hope that clarifies things...
I just tried your method above, and it didn't work. It is still stuck on the samsung screen after rebooting. x_x
Use this link http://galaxys2root.com/category/galaxy-s2-unroot/ it well set u back to stock. Once it is done wait the 10 mintues then boot into the stock recovery and clear cashe and factory reset. After that set up ur phone then reroot it make back up then flash away. Did this a couple of days ago working fine now. Good luck!!!

biglil1, I believe method you described would fix phones most likely bricked from custom roms.
However, my phone has never use a custom rom and it is on stock already; it has only been rooted. I have tried reflashing the same stock back to my phone but I have had no luck. Again, it was working fine but suddenly bricked mid day. I wasn't trying anything super fancy that would have bricked the phone in the first place.
Someone please help, I tried looking everywhere for an answer...
Its not just for reseting from a costum rom it can be used to return ur phone back to stock like the first time u unboxed it. When plugged in do u see a box highlighted yellow? If so try it again but revert back to GB then use Kies to update to ICS. Make sure u have the latest drives. Hopefully this way well work. As long as ur phone has some type of response u can recover it. Just keep tring make sure u dont unplug untill Odin says "pass" and ur phone reboots by its self.

[Q] Is it bricked? If not what is it? What do I need to do? My life can depend on it.

Hi friends!!
After my S4 decided to run away without insurance I had to revert back to my s2. It still had Hellybean on it so I upgraded it to PA 4.45 just to check it out on my phone. Then I went into the instructions on how to unlock the phone. I went to revert it back to stock ICS that it came with to do so and when I rebooted it gets stuck at the samsung logo that pulses. I can't get into recovery but I still can get into download mode but nothing works when flashed. I tried using ODIN for every stock ROM available and still nothing. I never bricked a phone before and this doesn't seem like one to me since the bricks I fixed before have never been able to go into DL mode without being jigged, Can somebody help me. I need this running asap for medical reasons. I'm a sitting duck without this phone if something should happen to me. I live alone and have no land line if I need to call 911.

Of course not. But I think the problem may be that I didn't know that Kies was still installed in this computer.
And removing Kies didn't work either. I was talking to a guy that does jtag repair near me he said try that first. Gave me a pit file and it didn't help.

Here is something something that has worked for me twice. Use JOdin3 ( https://builds.casual-dev.com/jodin3/) Plug your phone in before going to the websute and put the TWRP tar file in PDA. Click start. It will say it needs to obtain a pit file. Click OK. Ignore the part about using in the download mode combo. It should bootloop your phone and you then might be able to unplug your phone and boot into recovery. I use this as a last resort but it has worked twice for me.

HELP! Note 2 stuck in Factory mode. Can't clear it.

I had a battery issue with my old Note2 and, before I realized it was the battery, I'd wiped the phone and returned it to new. I don't use it for anything more than a PDA and Media controller since I've upgraded to newer phones but I use it A Lot around the house and depend on it about as much as my Note 5
Anyway, I've got it rooted, I went to the EFS folders and the Factory Mode is ON the KeyStr is ON but, every time I reboot the phone, I still get that overlay screen and notice. I can turn WiFi on after the phone boots back up and I can get the Factory mode to go away by going to Settings> More> Application manager> ALL> factory Test and clearing the data. This is a temporary fix. After I reboot, I get the screen again.
Also, when I go to the All area and scroll to Factory, I see 2 Factory Mode icons. One is 84KB the other is 560KB.
Is there something else I need to do in order to reset this phone so I can get rid of the Factory Mode screen? I rellay need to get this PDA back up and running again.
Thank You in advance.
Do you have a custom recovery or can you get to download mode?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA-Developers mobile app
No. No Custom Recovery. I can get into recovery mode. I found a website awhile back during my searches that had the Sprint .tar file and I tried to reinstall it via Odin but after the install, I still get the screen.
I don't know if I did something wrong during the install or if there is just something wrong with either the software or, could there be a hardware glitch that could be causing this? I really haven't done much rooting and customizing of my cell phones and such over the years so I've been kind of crash coursing myself on how to do it. I build computers and work with electronics as a hobby on the side but I've just never really done much with the smaller devices.
I appreciate any insight.
Thanks
Can you get into recovery mode (power home volume down). If so you could reformat and go back completely to stock using Odin. I'll post a link in a few to stock firmware

I am trying that version of the OS now and will let you know if that fixes it. It is downloading into the phone now.
Edit:
Downloaded, Installed, Rebooted automatically through Odin and it still came up with the Factory Mode screen.
Something it hasn't ever done before, after I connected it to my network, it recognized a need to download and install another System update.

Still no luck. After booting up, I still have the Factory Mode Screen on.
I can still get it to turn off while on by going through the App Manager and force stopping the Factory Mode and Factory Test apps and that stops the screen from coming back on.
The only other issue I have is the occasional request to activate that phone.
It just seems very odd that this issue has been so hard to repair.
Thank You again for your assitance. I appreciate it.
