Can't insert Voice memo with custom background S-note! - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Please bear with my several threads I am posting here. I am new to the Note 8 and the whole Note family and I am facing a bunch of issues.
Now, in the S-note app, I put a different background by going through the menus and choosing an image as the background. Great. Now, I noticed that after doing that, I can NO longer add voice memos or add any objects via the buttons below as these buttons are missing!!! Can ya help me? See the photos via the dropbox links to see what I am on about.

It Seems you are using the memo template for your image based notes. I don't think memo supports voice or objects.
Try the note or Idea note (for memo like blank canvas) for your template.

Brilliant! That was indeed the problem, thanks!

Handwriting to text apps?

Although I prefer other keyboards on my Note 10.1, I'm sorta "stuck" with the preinstalled Samsung keyboard because of it's very decent handwriting-to-text capabilities.
Does anyone know of equally good apps which allow H-to-T, even better if it's possible to recognize handwriting from saved notes?
Any other good keyboards which have H-to-T? I've tried Swype, but it's not as good as Samsung's...
Thanks for your input!
I've been wondering this myself but I learned to love the sammy H-to-T even on AOSP roms on my Original Note I717, and having the Note 10.1 just makes this keyboard better. Now that feature you mentioned about recognizing text from notes, now that would be sexy...if you know what I mean.
Try 7notes available on Google play, you can use the inbuilt app to write notes in your handwriting and convert later or can do on the fly conversions with any app that allows keyboard entry. The recognition is the best I have seen on any app to date.
Another app you can try is notes mobile, currently only available from the Samsung app market which also allows you to take notes and convert later.

I'll take a look at 7notes, thanks! But I can't find "notes mobile" on the Samsung Apps page. Who's the maker, or if you can just send the link?
Thanks!!

Thanks! I actually found it searching the forum here! It is really good at what it does!
There are 3-4 different note taking apps out there which have something particular about them that make them special, and things that you hate. I wish someone would make one that had it all!
Thanks again!

Note Taking with the Note 8-Anyone doing it?

I am looking for a tablet that I can use for some note taking. I want something I can sync with my PC, and have notes always available to view.
My notes are typically 1/2 page to 1 full page, nothing more. Some small rough sketches.
Can anyone give me some real life examples of how the galaxy note 8 is helping them with note taking?
Thanks in advance
John
I use lecture notes. I timestamp my notebooks and sort them into relevant folders and tag them with keywords so that I can find the relevant notes instantly. Works pretty well so long as I keep some sort of consistency with the tagging indexes.
I use drop sync to upload all my notes to drop box so that I can view them in png format from any computer. Can't search by the index tags that way though so it isn't ideal. If I'm not accessing them from the Note 8 it's usually the Note 2 though.

Thats the reason why I bought the note this week. Will get back here in a few weeks time and share my findings.
Evernote seems at least a good solution to sync between PC and other devices.
Stylus Labs "Write" is another possible solution.
I use Stylus Labs Write on my Note 8, Note 10.1, ATIV 500T (Win 8 Convertible). It's a basic "word processor for handwritten text", that is quick and keeps up with my stylus - no lag.
Pros: Free, fast, saves files in .xml format (so if you save the file your're using in your cloud-sync app of choice, I use Dropbox), then you'll be synced across devices, and can open, and for me, most importantly, edit, any file you've created in the app on any device.
Con: Doesn't allow typed input - handwritten only.
I also use OneNote 2013 for longer documents (it automatically syncs itself to Skydrive), although the Android app doesn't allow you to write directly "on" the page -- you input into an input box and the Note 8 converts your handrwriting into typed text.
And I also will use the native S-Note app for when I need to quickly jot something down, say notes from an incoming phone call.
I'm not affiliated with the creators of any of these apps, just a user.

My work requires that I often take notes on the fly, and it's great never having to worry about keeping a pen and paper handy. My Note 8 is about the size of a steno pad, which is what I used to use for that purpose. It's small enough to be portable, but large enough that I can annotate PDFs, etc., especially in landscape. It comes with an okay program called S-Notes, which you can sync with your computer. But I prefer a third-party program called Lecture Notes, which is more customizable. You can also sync Lecture Notes with other devices via DropBox.
Does no one find it a bit awkward to write, because of your hand falling off the end of the bezel?

+1 for Lecture Notes.
I need Project based note books for my job. I used to have a separate paper notebook for every project which was a pain when I was working on multiple projects simultaneously and running between multiple meetings. First I switched from paper to an iPad, then from the iPad to Lecture Notes on the Note 8. I write in it in landscape, but read my notes in Portrait. I was able to import my iPad notes as PDF, and just continue in Lecture Notes. I find the size to be just right. The iPad size is necessary with a capacitive screen, but with the S Pen, 8 inch works just as well and it is more portable. I only wish it had better battery life and no screen freezing issues (does not freeze while taking notes, only in other apps or while using the keyboard, which is why I only use the Note 8 at work, almost exclusively for taking notes). But it still works better than anything else I've tried so far, and I've been trying everything from the early Palm days... When the next version is released next year I will most likely upgrade to that, assuming it will have higher resolution or better battery life.

Interesting combo! Questions:
1). From all the 3, WHICH ONE do you use the most for your main note taking apps that works well ACROSS the different platform?
2). Can you "scribble" on OneNote 2013 document? From the screenshot in Google Play, it seems you can.
3). I use a Mac and there is not OneNote 2013 native apps for OSX. However, I have been hearing about the FREE Web Office Apps from Microsoft (not Office 365), which comes with OneNote 2013. How does this work?

1) Of the 3, the Stylus Labs Write product is the one that works "best" across all platforms. You "scribble" on the note directly in all versions of the product. I save the files in Dropbox, so when I sync Dropbox, I can open a note I've just created (on my Note 8) on my desktop and it looks exactly the same.
I like OneNote 2013 for handwritten notes, but, and this is a big but: the Android version of the product does NOT allow you to write directly on a note: a text input box (2 lines) pops up and you input there. That's not the case for the desktop app - you write directly on the note. Not a dealkiller for me, but something to be aware of, since you have to purchase the desktop app.
2) As for "scribbling in OneNote 2013, see 1).
3) Sorry, I can't help you there, I don't use the Web Office Apps, so I don't know how that would work.
Use it all the time 20 pages or more on average. For school. Works great for me this thing eliminated carrying any type of notebook imagine touting around 4 notebooks a day for class. Saves my back from getting tired I have 95 notes right now arranged into various class specific albums, I also, carry a. Mobile printer in case I need hard copies of anything. Best device for me hands down the note 8 weighs like what one lb. And my printer it's about the same so my backpack Is light light. Thanks Samsung

There are oodles of vids on YouTube using the various Note family of devices. Just name your app and there are vids on using it.
Here are a few vids from a user with a 10.1 using S-note but they still apply for any other GN device (all of her tips are using S-note):
General Note Taking
Real time note taking in class
LOTS of nice tips on S-note
Here is the demo video for Stylus Labs Write (which might become my fav overtime):
I really, really like this app. There are versions for several platforms plus the file format (HTML+SVG[vector graphics for your writing]) gives a nice degree of forward portability between apps. I have not tried altering the HTML then re-opening the file in Write. There are also threads for the app un. all of the GN forums here on XDA either started bythe developer or where he monitors to posts to support us users.
Then there is Lecture Notes which might have the most users of all, prolly more than the others combined. I like LN very much, however it is very customizable & hence can have a higher upfront learning curve. I suggest taking a very close look at it for the long term.
My recommendation to anyone new to taking notes with a stylus is use S-note and the other apps. This has a benefit of helping get a feel for the device. Then when you start to see features absent from S-note you are in a better position to evaluate other apps. But no matter what try several to learn which fit your style of note taking.
Have fun & good luck!
The bad thing with S-Notes is that a shape that has been automatically converted using the shape tool can no longer be moved within the note.
Makes using this feature useless.
I DO, however, really like the smooth writing in S-Notes.
I do all the time nearly every day. I mostly use S-note, but Write is gaining my attention more and more.

[Q] S-Note App Previews MISSING??

used a Note II for over a year now
just upgraded today to the note 3, to discover that in the S Note app, when you create a new note, THERE"S NO PREVIEW!!!
before on the note 2, when you open the app, there's a grid style listing of all your notes, each one with a preview of its contents!
Very useful when you have almost a hundred notes!
I imported everything using my Samsung account, and EVERY note on the new note 3 phone has a "cover" over the notes!! no previews!
so when i open the app, im greeted by TONS of blue (or whatever color) boxes, making it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find the note im looking for!
are there any other users out there that HEAVILY use the S-Note app that understand my frustration???
Searching Google is pointless... and i swear ive been thru EVERY setting trying to figure it out...
why would they CHANGE THIS???!?!
anyone know how to get the previews back??
I found that if i go into EACH note, I can create a preview, and have to re size a preview box, but that would take hours for all my notes, and still doesn't solve the problem of new notes defaulting to having a preview for the "cover"
I know there's that drag down thing to see a preview.. but once again, this defeats the purpose.. its gone from a super useful app, to not usable at all!!
I need to see a list / grid of previews when opening app up!
HELP!!!
any advice appreciated!
FYI im not looking for alternative apps - so I don't need suggestions to "stop using" Snote I know its a semi-crappy app.. but REALLY>>>?? common samsung!!!

This, along with losing text reflow in the stock browse, are two VERY big Note 3 letdowns.

S pen copy to clip board

After days of research I still have not found the answer that I am looking for. My old note 10.1 tablet was used extensively for school. I keep my textbooks and notes on it. The digitizer died so I upgraded to a 2014 edition. I am very upset over the loss of functionality with this tablet. When I lasso something I get the option to copy it to scrapbook and a whole bunch of other programs but not the clip board or gallery. I can copy it to lecture notes but it is done in a very clunky way. With my old note tablet I would simply lasso something like an equation in a text book and I would then wait about 5 seconds and the picture would disappear and automatically be save to clipboard. I then switched back to lecture notes and I would click the menu and select Import image and then choose gallery and my lassoed image would be right there. I simply selected it, change the size how I needed it and clicked the little check mark. Done.
With the new note there is no way to save to clipboard. My only other option is to upload it to a program like photos, Picasa, drive, and so on. I should not need an internet connection to upload something to what is basically being used as a clipboard. How do I get this feature back? Do I need to root? Can I reinstall the old note program or settings? Of course samsung says that it can't be done but I find that hard to believe since the older tablet did it just fine. Any help is appreciated.
Does lecture notes not appear in the list of programs you can send the selection to? Maybe you can ask the developer to help, as ever note, one note, snote etc are all there. Much easier than copying to clipboard and then importing.
By the way, once you send it to a program, it does get copied to the clipboard automatically. You can paste it if you are using the Samsung keyboard.

Yes it does, but the issue is that when I select it, it wants to open it in a new notebook or open a existing notebook and then insert it at the beginning of the notebook. If I am in a class where I have taken lots of notes then I have to drag the inserted image to the bottom of the page, use the volume buttons to move the page down, then drag again, move page, again and again for however many pages of notes I have. The way it used to work was I lassoed something, copied to clipboard, went back to lecture notes where I had just left it, insert image and confirm. It has changed from about a 10 second process to 30 seconds or more for a single image. At this point I would be happy with removing the new snote and spen settings from both my note 4 and note 10.1 2014 and putting the old snote/spen settings back in to get this functionality back. It's just stupid that clipboard is not an option. And the ONLY reason that it seems it isn't is because Samsung wants us to use it's apps, which it has already shown that it won't support from version to version. I used to use snote for all of this but when I upgraded my phone my old tablet and the new phone would no longer sync. So I upgraded the tablet too and now wish I hadn't. The moment another company comes out with a comparable product with native stylus support, I am done with Samsung.
Yeah, It's annoying that there is no copy to clipboard option. I also use it for notes and I multiwindow a PDF reader with Lecture notes. The lecture notes option in the lasso kills the multiwindow and, as you said, it works weirdly.
The solution I found: Select whatever you want to copy with the lasso. In the apps selection bar, select the Bluetooth option (with Bluetooth off). If you see at the bottom. Of the screen, a little white rectangle will say 'Copied to clipboard'. Then a popup will appear saying: 'You need to enable bluetooth' Click Cancel and wohala!!
Paste it as you know.
I actually posted this in a conversation with acadroid, Lecturenotes creator, somewhere.
Edit: Here, better explained with images:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59873552&postcount=30
Tell me if it works..
It does seem to copy to a "non standard" clip board. Thanks for the tip. I also noticed that after trying this that if I select lecture note from the menu it is not trying to open a new note book now. It seems to try to insert the picture where I last was in lecture notes. Not sure why the change. I think I can make it work. I think the failure here is mostly not being able to copy straight to a clip board or the gallery but that is more on samsung than lecture notes. And lector notes is one hell of a step up from snote. Thanks for the tips everyone.
@sendeth: I am not sure whether this helps, but LectureNotes has an open `import image in open notebook´ in the app's import settings. If you enable this option, any image which is opened with LectureNotes or shared to LectureNotes gets directly imported (or, more precisely, placed for import) into the currently open notebook.
You might want to wait for the lollipop upgrade, or do it if you already have it available. It has the smart clip feature from Note 4, which let's you grab screen clips and keep them in a floating tray onscreen, then paste into whichever application you want. I use it all the time on the edge, and it works pretty well. Haven't tried with LN though.

S-Pen Apps?

What apps do you guys use for your S-Pen?
First time note user and as cool as i think the S-Pen is, i cant really find a use for it! Its a bit gimmicky really! So iam trying to find some apps that make use of it so i can have a few more reasons to take out and use the s-pen.
Any apps you guys recommend?
Looking for a really good coloring book app in particular and any other cool apps that make use of the pen! Thanks
You can use the Spen for any apps , good thing is your screen remains clean as well , i use mine for torrent websites where its too tiny to read without zoom , and the magnetfiy option makes this nice and simple
I use my s pen for all things writing. I use One Note for notes as I don't like s note nor does it cross platforms so I can continue on my surface when I'm back at the office. The s pen is an absolute necessity for me. I can draw diagrams and sketches will bidding my jobs. Can't imagine having to draw or write with my finger. I've been on note devices since note 2.
Someone has suggested some simple games for S-Pen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=42&v=2u9V5-kxZGQ
Not a gimmick at all.
I mainly use mine for writing down notes or drawing up diagrams. Writing information on a photo or screenshot.
Also use the text select all the time. When your on a website and cant get the text to highlight to copy it.
Then the spen and the built in app works great.
Thanks guys. It seems it has more uses then i thought
Also if you use outlook for work, hovering over an email will bring up a preview view of said email.
I find using the spen for editing photos is way more useful and more accurate than using my tubby lil finger.
I use picsay pro + my s pen for editing photos.
My favorite SPen app hands down is Samsung Scrapbook. Ive not been able to find it in the Galaxy Store but its available via Samsungs web site
https://www.sammobile.com/apk/scrapbook/scrapbook-16-1-28/
I had it installed on my Note 8 and now 10+... Also installed it on my Galaxy Tab. In order to use the app you would use the SPen smart select and then you tap "Share" then select Scrapbook from the list of apps and you can save the extracted text or image into Scrapbook. Same way it worked on the Note 4.
You can add tags and categorize your scrapbook clippings as well. It will even store web URLS from where you had used smart select.
Scrapbook also supports sync which you can enable via in app settings, sync over wifi. Or via phone settings, accounts & backup, accounts, Samsung Acct, 3 dots menu, sync settings. Scroll to bottom and turn on Scrapbook.

Just did that today for a redeem code that was obnoxiously long. Couldn't copy and paste it for some reason, so I used smart select and converted it to text. I was so thrilled!

Allot of times I like clip a portion of a web page for later reference. Like instructions how to enable developer options. So I smart select the text instructions, save it into Scrapbook under my Phone Tips category.
Later I can open scrapbook to read the instructions, tap to visit the web site where I got the screen clip from or share it in an sms.
I have numerous categories from game screenshots with annotations, to tech tips from the web. Its a way to collect information, extract text later when convenient and not congest the gallery with images.

Been using Samsung Scrapbook app for meany years.!!
Can't remember when, since Samsung first bundled it in Firmware.! (... was it available re Note 2.. Note 3 days.? )
Anyway,
i kinda "forgot" about Scrapbook app , as Samsung "ditched" it... very quietly !!!!
I was very annoyed/upset about this fact.
Saw your reference/link to Scrapbook app, on Sammobile and downloaded it again.
Installed and still working fine.
I managed to access my Samsung account and sync all my old Scrapbook backups notes .... (many years back.)
Good trip down memory lane !
Thanks... I'm happy again.!
Agree it's a very useful tool for me.!
Just to add..... / any suggestions..?
I see Samsung seems to have ditched, the ability for
handwriting to text, in search boxes/field .?
Please note,
Im not referring, to when using Samsung stock keyboard.
Handwriting to text is still an option with Samsung keyboard.
I'm referring to
eg i use SwiftKey and say i want to Google search for "something" then you could hover S pen over search box
and a small blueish icon would appear with a capital T .
If you tapped the icon you could write with Spen and it would convert to text..
Now Samsung has again quietly, removed this function...?
A'm i correct in assuming this or wrong.
Any other options or app available.
Thanks.
I refer to my above post.
Here is a snip of what i "talking about"
re ability to search with handwriting to text.. with another keyboard.. no Samsung keyboard.
I took foto & snip it.
It's still available and working on my Samsung Tab A (2016)
Any suggestions.
Thanks.

You are 100% correct! I dont see the popup "T" button on the note 10. I hadnt dug into the spen features yet. This is a huge disappointment. Im reading an old Note 8 manual and the feature was called Direct Pen Input. OMG any chance we can pull the APK from a Note 8/9 and install it?
