tldr: Too much Vertical lines on my GN. It's very visible and worse than the graininess.
I know others won't agree with me here but, this is a $650+tax phone.
A phone of this price deserves a perfect screen.
Look at iphone 4 / 4s. Sure the screens are small but there are NO ISSUES WHAT SO EVER. The IPS they use is basically perfect.
Ever since I got my Galaxy Nexus, I have had concerns regarding the screen:
1) It kills too much battery. Battery settings show it killing 50 - 70% of the battery WITH AUTO BRIGHTNESS ON.
2) There are LINES EVERYWHERE. The whole screen is very grainy unless the brightness is very high. But then it's too bright (especially for low light reading) and it will probably kill 80%+ of the battery....
3) Pentile matrix. Sorry to say but it's very noticeable. This is especially true for text that is white or red.

Cycle through the colors and notice, Green is the only true 720p. The red/blue look terrible and you can see the sub pixels (because there are only half as many of each compared to green)
Overall, it's a great screen. I can live with the high battery drain (large screen). I can also live with the pentile (high resolution, excellent blacks).
However, the lines / grainy textures everywhere is just unacceptable. I could even live with the grainy texture but there are a few vertical lines that are VERY noticeable.
Should I get mine exchanged ?? I'm just afraid that the replacement may be worse....

they are all kinda like this. Some worse than others. I just don't mind it as much. What is killing me is the camera...it is so bad...
Honestly, I don't see the graininess,even with this antiglare screen protector I have on.

Just about every new phone has the same two complaints... Battery and screen. Not that you don't have a valid complaint, I've noticed it too. I just don't think you are going to find that perfect balance in a phone.

I'm using the SGP oleophobic atm.
What really bothers me is the Vertical lines...
Try this. Set your background as a solid dark grey color. I guarantee you will see the imperfections.

The definition of 720p is based on pixel arrangement, NOT subpixel arrangement. it is a 1280x720 screen. By your definition, a 720p/1080p screen is only true if it is an RGB subpixel arrangement. So you would also say that the Sharp Aquos Quattron TVs that have a yellow subpixel are more than 1080p.
If you expected the equivalent of a current generation plasma screen shrunk down to a 4.65" screen in a phone, that's just unreasonable. Its the first iteration of this tech. Lines and grainy screens are AMOLED's version of lasting burn-in and high power consumption on plasma.
Also, everyone references the iPhone. Why? The colors are inaccurate and undersaturated, and the contrast is too high. It is NOT a calibrated IPS panel. Name-dropping IPS technology means nothing.

They are all like that.. it's a flaw of the pentile matrix that they used to build the screen.
auto-brightness makes it worse.
What's the point in setting up a scenario to expose the flaws that exist in every (gnex) screen?
Most people's use-cases won't involve that scenario and they'll be able to enjoy the screen without a problem except for battery life, but battery life is always going to be a problem for a display larger than 4".
In my day to day use of looking at things other than dark gray backgrounds and solid color fields, the screen looks fantastic and has one of the highest pixel densities of any phone display out there. (Nitro HD, Rezound, LG's 720p screen phone and iPhone 4/4S have slightly higher pixel densities.. but they're all a cut above most other phones available)
ok the wife and i upgraded at the same time...........i chose the GN she chose the iphone 4s.
and honestly i would be gutted if i had chosen the 4s !!! ive worked a lot with the sg2 and for me the screen is too 'in your face' colours are vivid...the GN screen has a great balance.........and well going from the from the GN to the 4s ..........jeez the 4s is tiny
That first point drives me crazy. It's a percentage of battery use, do you get that? It means that if the phone uses almost no power except a little when the screen is on, then the display will be using most of the battery.
What you WANT is that. The worst is when cell standby eats up all the battery. That means it's draining just sitting on the table.

OK fair enough.
People have been *****ing and complaining about this phone not coming out fast enough for months now. Now that it's out people are logging in here to ***** about it not being perfect.
All I can say is that some people are creating a lot of needless suffering for themselves. At least keep it to yourself if you are going to go through life with that kind of an attitude.
If 14 year old me could have seen this phone in 1991 his head would have exploded.
I'm not an expert, but I just sold my Bionic and got the G. Nexus. The pentile on the Bionic drove me NUTS, but I LOVE this screen. I don't see ANY screen door effect, and I have loaded a few HD Videos on it and watching them is GORGEOUS. The colors are amazing and blacks are better then my 55" Samsung LED with an 8 million:1 contrast ratio. My roommate has the iPhone 4, and his draw dropped at this screen, and we held it right next to the iPhone 4. Only complaint is video recording is shaky, glad they are adding video stabilization in 4.0.3. OH, and I looked at my battery usage and the display is 68%. I bought the 2100mAh battery (for 25 bux, and barely any size change why not) and am getting a good 8-9 hours with a lot of use out of it which is about what I got on my Bionic with the 2760mAh extended battery. So maybe the screen is just by far, the most power intensive component, hence the high percentage of battery use. Anyway, this phone, like all others, could use improvements in some areas, but I absolutely LOVE it. And am SO GLAD to be rid of my Bionic (GOOD RIDDANCE)

I never complained about it not being out lol. Hell I didn't even line up, just pre-ordered online and waited patiently....
It's just that: THE VERTICAL LINES...It's worse than the graininess part. These lines should not be here on a $650 phone is really my biggest complaint.
Honestly, it's just a matter of quality control. Some phones are worse than others ??? Well that just proves that it's the QC.
I hope Samsung ups their quality control so people don't get stuck with these visible lines on their $650 phones.

No, you can't tell it's pentile (no one has been able to and I doubt he's placed his screen under a microscope).

The camera on this Nexus is crazy amazing compared to my previous Thunderbolt! The quality of the pictures is about the same but I can now snap pictures, with flash, almost as fast as I can press the button. On the Thunderbolt it is one picture every 5 seconds or so. Amazing!

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!

I actually do notice the difference though. Samoled hd has deeper blacks and whiter whites than the slCD2. So in the contrast category, Samsung wins imo. Although color reproduction, the slcd 2 had more natural tones.

The only thing putting me off the note 2 is the smaller screen resolution. I can imagine apps like the samsung calendar must be less usable. Also I find 800 pixels is a dream resolution for viewing internet pages.
For those that switched from the note 1 how are you finding it?
Is the less dpi really that noticeable? I'm actually very excited about the new aspect ratio as I watch a lot of movies on my phone

It's really annoying in some situations but then you launch a video and your stunned.
You browse, somehow less good, it's quite noticeable when you had Note 1 but then the screen is so much better in ALL other aspects.
Then you get no problems with app compatibility due to the more standard resolution. You see more webapps and games thought for 720p.
So wrapping up, I guess I'll get use to it and with all the other goodies on Note 2 it's worth the upgrade: amazing batterie life (doubled), screen colour and brightness, speed and great sound.
I'll keep the nostalgy of the original Note owner though :<

Isn't the one lesser column of icons also the result of less horizontal pixel? Yes I agree the screen is much better, but I don't suppose it's just for web viewing. There are the utilitarian point of view to this. I would imagine people who used to have certain amount of icons on a single page and then suddenl reduce would feel negatively. It's like taking a feature out. I am coming from an Epic 4G so I got no bone to pick on this just voicing another valid PoV that some people didn't see.
Sometimes I'll do something and my brain will go, 'that looks a bit odd', because I remembered how it was before.
But you'll get over it. The Note 2 is THAT much better.

I read on a couple of different blogs that movie mode is suppose to be the most accurate. Does anyone else feel that that mode is waaaaaaaaay desaturated compared to standard? I've been using standard but wow.. what is your take on it guys. Is that really how other screens lcd screens look like?
Standard is terribly over saturated. Movie is a tad under saturated. Natural is much closer IMO.
If you want perfect calibration - use Perseus kernel
Honestly I prefer a bit of saturation instead of the washed-out-like colours of the natural profile, even if the latter it's closer to reality...
However, I like to change it sometimes.
The only time when it's useful is while watching some videos. And still I hate it - since oversaturation means significant loss of detail. Icons look blurry and make me want to gouge my eyes out. Ugh.

Try Perseus, again. Can't recommend it enough if you, like me, prefer accurate color calibration.
Using Natural myself, I think it's the most realistic, but it's still slightly undersaturated compared to a good LCD. I agree that Movie is too desaturated and washed out, while Standard leans way too much towards typical AMOLED cartoony oversaturation. I literally don't think I would've kept my Note 2 if it were locked at the Standard or Dynamic settings, they both look ridiculous.

Try Perseus, again. Can't recommend it enough if you, like me, prefer accurate color calibration.

Huh? What do you mean by that? The color calibration is as accurate as it could get to real life - what do you mean you didn't get the "best setting"? Probably you could slightly adjust the whites if it's absolutely necessary, other than that it's perfect. Give it 2-3 days and let your eyes adjust to the calibration, though.
I've been seen a lot of bashing going on regarding the OP3'd display, which is getting rather annoying.
I've put together a side-by-side comparing my OP3 to my Note 4.
Notes: The OP3 is using the screen protector out of the box, which is admittedly pretty garbage. The Note 4 also has a screen protector (plastic), but it's a premium brand.
Settings: The OP3 is at full brightness with the color temperature slider all the way to the right. The Note 4 is using AMOLED photo mode at full brightness. I took this photo with a Canon G7X and locked the color balance using a grey card. These photos are untouched, other than cropping and resizing slightly.
Can you tell which is which? Does one have more detail over the other?
OP3: Left
Samsung Galaxy Note 4: Right
I'd suggest looking at this photo on a calibrated monitor for better accuracy.
(I've included the original file to compare to).
I'd also like to add that critics are calling the OP3 display as the "worst display", while the Note 4 has one of the best in recent years.

Awesome man, thanks for this. The exaggerations of the media (one way or another) drive me nuts. This puts to rest my only concern.
The colors on the oneplus are way too over saturated. The skin tones look orange. This is nitpicking obviously. Oneplus said they're releasing an update anyways to address this issue so it won't be a problem. The note 4 has a better display doesn't change anything .
There's also a blue cast on the oneplus screen.
That screen banding in the blue sky on the OP3, is it something that came up in the photo or can you actually see it? Because colours slightly off I can take, but that is a big no

That's actually because of the screen protector. It also smears fingerprints really bad despite me cleaning it.

It may have been bias to yellow/orange/red because I had the color temperature cranked all the way to the right. Also, if you are viewing that image from a monitor that is not calibrated it will look bad (or at least much worse than in real life).
I asked my wife which looked better and she immediately picked the OP3. Ironically, citing it was sharper/more detailed and the colors are more natural.

While neither is very accurate, if I had to choose between the two then it'd be the OP3 for sure.
While over-saturated, the colors look more natural in comparison to the blueish tint that the Note 4 has which is particularly obvious on the whites.
As for the "worst screen" comment, all that bull started from the (admittedly honest) Anandtech review and a rather poor choice of words, especially as "worst" is actually a rather inaccurate word seeing as what they meant was that the calibration was the furthest off from "true-to-life" than any other screen.
To their credit, they were quick to mention that this was obviously BY DESIGN as in, OnePlus actually CHOSE to steer away from color accuracy in favor of more pleasing colors and also mentioned that OnePlus apparently targeted the NTSC color gamut instead of the more natural-looking sRGB.
That's also the part where they mentioned that OnePlus will be adding an sRGB option in the next OTA, at which point they'll re-evaluate that part of the review.
IMHO it is sad that an honest account of a critical reviewer was taken out of context and used from people that never even saw the phone up close to bash it.
I can understand why OnePlus calibrated this AMOLED display the way they did. Coming from the OnePlus 2's IPS LCD, they wanted to flex a bit with the OnePlus 3 and wow us in a similar manner as Samsung is always wowing users with their screens. Could you trade a Honda for a Lexus and not open her up a bit on the highway on the way home?
There are inevitably going to be people who like the punchy, poppy colors of the OnePlus 3 display and those who would prefer it to be more subdued and true-to-life. The admirable thing is that OnePlus is working on an update that will allow users to choose which they prefer. I think that's truly commendable.
Note 4 was a good display but not the best these days. I have Note 3,4,Nexus 6/6P, S7Edge. I find the OP3 is the closest to Note 3, it has same resolution. The colors are better on the OP3, the brightness better on Note3. I think some areas the OP3 is a bit washed out in the reds compare to Note 4. The Nexus 6p most neutral. S7Edge colors are bold. So I don't think OP3 has a bad display, it's better than Nexus 6, a bit better than Note 3 can't say it's better or worse really. So perhaps there are bad screens out there but I am lucky that mine is good overall.
so do this again with sRGB for color accuracy people
I had a deep look at my coworker's OP3, after he updated to 3.2.1 with sRGB feature added.
Well, I think it is a very good display and I like it a lot better when in sRGB mode: much more natural colors, less "neon glow" effect.
That said, my colleague prefers the native color calibration so again it all comes down to personal preferences.

hell no. Both of them have yellowish tone and too over saturated. For me, high quality IPS is the best, for ex : sony Z4

It was rated as the most accurate display of it's time. This is not using Samsung display modes btw.

Do you happen to have an older phone by the way? Please compare it to that too and then convince us with your results that based on your comparison you came to the conclusion that this display is great. Jokes aside, compare it to a recent flagship not to something that was made 3 ywars ago.

Sure sure in your dreams may be. Nobody uses srgb mode anyways because whites are so yellow. But if you are that shallow person to just go by what a review said then go ahead stick to srgb lol

So what exactly are you doubting? That the sRGB mode on the OP3 isn't as accurate as professional equipment says it is, or that your eyes know what "real white" looks like?
I happen to calibrate multiple monitors using high end equipment, and to most people white looks "warm". The sRGB mode on the OP3 looks as accurate as any monitor I work on, so what's the problem?
And fortunately, professionals don't use eyes to determine color accuracy and white points, so this argument really is silly.

Professionals my arse. I don't care what "professionals" call white inside a lab. This is real life, not lab life. If you think those yellow whites are the real whites then you are due for an eyes appointment really soon. We are talking display quality here, not calibration quality. If you want to talk about display quality then compare it to 2016 devices, not to 2013 devices. Your Note 4 is too old, sorry.

So instruments which measure display color accuracy aren't to be trusted? In "real life" we generally don't allow subjective preference to override objective measurements.
I can't understand why anyone would be upset about this. If you don't prefer accurate whites then go with a display that gives cool whites instead.
