[GUIDE] Run Free Hyper-V Server in Desktop Mode - Windows 8 Development and Hacking

Hi All,
This is my first guide on XDA and this might not be the right topic but it's related. (This is for Advanced users)
I want to start this thread to show how you can use Microsoft's Free Hyper-V Server for more than just "Hyper-V".
I have done tests with Hardware and VMWare Player (V5) with both Hyper-V 2008 R2 & Hyper-V 2012.
System Requirements;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-V#System_requirements_and_specifications
And more specifically;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-V#Microsoft_Hyper-V_Server
Download a Free copy of Hyper V Server; (It’s free, so no Install key required!)
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/hyper-v-server/default.aspx (You might need to register)
I have successfully used VMWare Player 5, Version 4 works for Hyper-V 2008 R2 but not 2012.
If you are trying this on hardware directly, you’ll also need to download your system’s drivers (at a minimum the Network Card) and a web browser
. i.e. Chrome downloader from: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/ (Tested to work correctly in Hyper-V Environment) Save these to a USB stick.
Anything else can be downloaded once Hyper-V Server is up and running.
Follow the Hyper-V installation as usual (all defaults)
As a guide; Select Custom Installation, you'll need more than 10GB hard drive size after we add extras, so pick 20GB as a minimum. wait for the re-boot
At this point you'll be asked to set a password and you'll get a command prompt for a user interface.
That's right, Desktop, control panel, Start menu, Metro, Task Bar, System Tray, Internet Explorer are all User interface elements that are removed from this copy of windows.
This is where this [GUIDE] starts to provide non-standard information;
Let's start by Installing your Drivers. (I'm assuming you know how to use the command prompt to change drive letter of your USB drive and launch the driver installer program.)
OR in VMWare case, on the menu select Install VMWare tools. This will not launch automatically, hence you'll need to use the command prompt to change to your CD/DVD Drive and launch the "Setup.exe" for VMware tools.
Now start the installation for Chrome, similar to above.
Now Chrome is running, Close the prompt to select default browser (it's your only browser...)
Sometimes I have found Chrome to crash with a dinput8.dll error (no all websites), Chrome works with this prompt up, but it's nicer to avoid it prompting.
http://www.driverskit.com/dll/dinput8.dll/585.html * We'll get back to this later...
You'll need to be uncompressed the above file, so lets download 7Zip also
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Now we need a file manager, since there is no Windows Explorer (or now called explorer) Explorer2 (x2) fits the bill nicely.
http://www.zabkat.com/x2lite.htm * Free Light Version (There are issues with not displaying some files, That because it’s a 32bit application that is not 100% compatible with a 64bit environment), The Pro Version is US$29.95 and is available in 64bit. When you install this, select the option to replace Explorer (note: there is no explorer, so this option allows explorer2 to handle some calls to explorer)
Now download a Start menu, Taskbar “desktop” replacement http://www.emergedesktop.org/* Free and customizable.
- Lets customize the Emerge desktop,
- If not started run “C:\Program Files\Emerge Desktop\emergeCore.exe”
- Lets start by removing menu Items that are broken due to not having a full copy of windows.
-- Settings, Configure Core, Click on emergeLauncher.exe, the press the Cog.
--- Delete “Homepage”
--- Delete “Executable %AppletDIR%\documentation\...”
--- Delete “ Tutorial”
--- Add Type “Live Folder”, Folder “C:\Users\Public\Desktop” (Click Save)
-- Settings, Configure Core, Click on emergeTasks.exe, the press the Cog.
--- Change Icon Size to 16x16 (Click OK)
- Start menu (or right click any where on the desktop) select Desktop Display, right click, Delete.
Now any new program that puts a shortcut in this folder “C:\Users\Public\Desktop” will appear on the launch Task Bar.
For some "Control Panel" replacement options download a GUI for managing some windows features (These projects help to speed up initial configuration;
http://corefig.codeplex.com/ Corefig for Windows Server 2012 Core and Hyper-V Server 2012
https://coreconfig.codeplex.com/ for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Core edition
This together with Sconfig can do quite a bit of windows configurations without resorting to the command line.
Ok the dinput8.dll.zip you downloaded earlier, you can un-compress this and put the dll (not the zip) in to the C:\windows\system32 folder.
If you want to make re-starting faster and don't plan on using Hyper-V, lets remove it. (coreconfig I think has this option but the following will always work) In a command prompt window type the following;
start /w ocsetup microsoft-hyper-v /uninstall
(Windows will need to restart a couple of times to do this)
(Optional) Enable a network share (You can use this like a Network file Server now, I don't know if there is a limitation to the number of connections like in desktop versions of windows)
net share /Grant:Administrator,FULL system=c:\
Remote Desktop Concurrent Users limit: 2 (one console, one remote OR two remote) (1 UP on a windows workstation copy)
Enable with from the Sconfig utility..
If you want to run SQL Server (Tested with 2008 R2) you'll need DotNet3.5
In a command prompt window type the following;
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All
I did this as a test a while ago and I think that is all I needed to do and it worked. (I have gotten it to work, so it would be interesting on how much it can be pushed on this platform)
Need Java? Download Java http://java.com/en/download/
Need to use Office Documents?; http://www.libreoffice.org/download
Need FTP Server?; https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server
Need Web Server?; http://mirror.mel.bkb.net.au/pub/apache//httpd/binaries/win32/
Need QEMU support? http://qemu.weilnetz.de/w64/
I used the built in Windows Updates (option 6 on the Sconfig utility) but I also prefer to use: WSUS Offline http://wsusoffline.net/
WSUS will also quickly get you copies of Silver light & C++ run times (or you can find the URL's manually), I find it's best to use both, WSUS Offline for quick offline copies and windows updates for the latest Microsoft has to offer... (I did not say latest & greatest...)
Work in Progress (probably not going to happen without 3rd party work).
Need Sound? (Don’t know of a solution yet…) I saw someone working on this with Server 2012 Core but I did not find the solution or if it would work with hyper-V copy.
Need Direct X? (Don’t know of a solution yet…) I've tried downloading -redist copies, etc but Direct X has been integrated into windows for years and this is the copy it's removed from.
I'd also want to get VMWare Player working or similar for the USB Pass through feature and 3D client support but I'd probably have to use an alternative. (I heard of a USB Driver for windows to share over Ethernet to another copy of windows)
Okay, this is all I have got for now, your thoughts?

WMDC 6.1 (Picture Tweak) Sync Ico files for Mobile Devices !!!!!!

Picture tweak to change picture in WMDC 6.1 in Vista!!!
Rename all extracted ico file to sync.ico
Copy the icon file (extract it from the zip file) to the windows directory of your pda.
Step 2: Windows Mobile Device Center - Reinstall DriverNow that the ICON file is on the device, we need to reinstall the device driver so that WMDC will see it.
1. Make sure the device is synced and connected to your PC. You need an active connection so that Windows Vista sees your handheld device.
2. Go to the Control Panel.
3. Switch the Control Panel to the "Classic View" in the upper left hand corner of the Control Panel windows.
4. Open Device Manager.
5. Click the small "+" in front of "Portable Devices"
6. Right click on "Pocket PC" or "Windows Mobile Device" or "Smartphone" or similar.
7. Click Uninstall
8. Choose OK when prompted about Uninstalling the device.
9. The Device Manager will flash a time or two, and the device will no longer show up on the Portable Devices list.
10. Remove your Device from the computer.
11. Wait a good 30 seconds to 1 minute and then dock (connect) your device to the computer again.
12. Your computer will now be installing the device once again.
13. Open Windows Mobile Device Center, and you should now see your ICON on the left hand side (see picture below), and you have not lost any details of your partnership.
Sometimes the wmdc shows your old picture if that is the case copy the icon file to this directory:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\[some strange code like 8ae71abe]
@Everybody: I can also make ico file for your devices, so feel free to post you device info or a picture in jpg format.
Conversion is quite simple !!!
Search for png image of your device. (With No Background)
Save it to your pc.
Use ConvertIcon.com or other free online png to ico converter. Its absolutely free.
Sync Ico files for Palm Treo Pro
"@Everybody: I can also make ico file for your devices, so feel free to post you device info"
I have a Black Palm Treo Pro, could you mace a sync.ico file for me please. I have searched the internet and can't find one anywhere.
Strange thing is that there was once one there and not sure what I've done but it vanished after I did some hard resets etc in an attempt to correct some errors in syncing.
Thanks in advance.

[REQ] Wake On Lan

Hi Guys & Gals,
Quick question.....
Has anybody come across a Wake On Lan app for WM6. I have a small home network that I start up from a central PC using Wake On LAN function in the system BIOS. I would like to be able to start my PC's from the Blackstone over my WLAN.
Everything within the LAN & WLAN is running reserved DHCP from the router side so all IP's are constant including the Blackstone.
Cheers for any replies.........
Gilgamesh.......
I don't know if any solution exists but I've read a tutorial (in french sorry) on how to make a wake on line application for wm
http://blogs.msdn.com/pierreca/archive/2009/03/19/wake-on-lan-depuis-votre-t-l-phone.aspx
Hope that could help you
Try this..
jpl69 cheers.........The app works like a charm but is a little basic. Needs the full MAC to be entered manually each time.
What would be really nice is some way of associating the MAC to a short meaningful name that could then be listed so it could just be selected from a list rather than enter the full MAC each time. In this way multiple PC's coud be listed.
While we're at it would also be nice to have a standby button as well so PC's within the LAN could be started and shut down form the app.
I've never written an app before and would either like a few pointers to see if I could do it or see if anyone out there would consider building on the app already posted.
Any suggestion welcome.......
Besides developing an app to that (no time) i could sugest make several shortcuts using resco and parsing the mac as parameter. At least you only had to make it once.
Thanks jpl69 for your continued replies...much appreciated.
I have seen Resco but not realy sure which component to download to edit the exe. I have used PEG (parsing) in other apps at work but just need something to get me started on WM6. I could the replicate the exe per MAC and create a single file or each PC
Might be worth looking at vxUtil: http://www.cambridgevx.com.
This has Wake-On-LAN (among other things), and I think it remembers previously entered values. You can't give things memorable names but it might help.

i think he means, like, create new shortcut with parameters. Just for example the same as on pc creating a shortcut to c:\quake\quake.exe and use the string "c:\quake\quake.exe" +bind mouse1 shoot +set mode opengl blablabla
Again thanks for the continued replies.....
Downloaded vxUtil and had a play and it does have a working WOL option but again it's messy and not really the simple solution I was looking for. It does have some other features (ping/sweep, tracert & DNS lookup) but I don't really have a use for these.
Still really after a single icon to start each PC as per the shortcut suggestion above.
All suggestions still welcome and appreciated.
I will just try to clarify what was the idea of jpl69.
Please read the README file included in the attached archive (posted by jpl69).
It says:
"Command Line:
===============
Please use as following:
WakeOnLan.exe [MACAddress]
MacAddress can be either 01E4523AEE22 or 01:E4:52:3A:EE:22 "
Now with Resco Explorer (or with Total Commander, which is freeware) one can make several different shortcuts to WakeOnLan.exe, each ending with the specific MAC.
In Total Commander, after creating the shortcut, one must select it, choose "properties", then "shortcut" tab, then manually add the MAC at the end of the "target" line.
Copy the ready shortcut several times, name the new copies whatever you want and place those shortcuts in a folder. Dont forget to change the MAC for each machine.
Hope it helps.
Now I get it......Sorry for the slow uptake but been a busy boy and head has been fried by other things. Will have a play tomorrow and post back results.
Many thanks..........
I dont know if you still looking to do this but I got this working & figured I would reply here for future reference.
First i have a linksys DD-WRT router, so I followed these steps:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WOL
Then I downloaded the attached cab & its one click & works great!

Any other program with capability to send WOL packets to a particular IP address (and not just broadcast over LAN)?
Although this thread is about one year old, before I developed my WoL everywhere program, I searched for programs like mine here and came to this thread... None of the programs I've found fit my requirements, so I made a program myself...
So I hope your search is over and you've found what you need with my little WoL everywhere... you can download it here:

Create a shortcut to WakeOnLan with a MAC address
Hi,
I'm pasting to this old thread since I found the WakeOnLan tool here and want to share my tips with others.
If you want to create a shortcut so that you have a separate executable (say in your Start Menu) then follow these steps:
Install WakeOnLan from the above link. I put it in "\Program Files\WakeOnLan\WakeOnLan.exe"
Browse to this location with explorer on your PPC. Select the WakeOnLan executable and click "copy"
Browse to where you want the shortcut to appear:
"\Windows\Start Menu" will show in your start menu
"\Windows\Startup" will be run when you reset or power cycle the device
"\Windows\Programs" will apear in your Start Menu > Programs folder
"\Windows\Settings" will appear in your system settings
Select on some empty space (not an existing file) in your chosen folder and choose "Paste shortcut"
Use a text editor on Windows / Linux to edit this new file, or one on your device (I didn't have any that would open on my device so I copied it to Linux, edited in emacs, then copied it back)
Edit the line that looks like:
Code:
40#"\Program Files\WakeOnLan\WakeOnLan.exe"
essentially this is a character count, a "#", the location the shortcut points to, and arguments. Add your MAC address like this and take note of the quotes:
Code:
58#"\Program Files\WakeOnLan\WakeOnLan.exe" AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF
count the characters of the shortcut, mac address, and space, then add one. This is your new number (in my case, 58).
An easy way to do this is to use "wc" on Linux:
Code:
echo "\Program Files\WakeOnLan\WakeOnLan.exe AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF" | wc -c
57
(remember to add 1!)
Now you can repeat the process and paste as many different WoL shortcuts as you like! I've made just one and called it "WoL MythTv" to wake up my media centre at home. Neat
I'll post my sources in the next post since new users aren't allowed to post links...

WP7 Update 1 sdk LIVE! - caution

so emulator only.

EDIT:
Turns out you can deploy with the new SDK! I do have lockups though on every other deploy... a simple unplug and re-deploy fixes.
hahaha, thats kind of a big issue that you need the new firmware on phone to test your app but i guess that means the update has to be soon for the hardware
From how its looking now, microsoft wants to give a 1 month head start for devs to "update proof" or "feature match" with the update...
So right now im positive no update for phones before feb 16th and im willing to bet that there wont be an update till very close to march if not past that (they want CDMA phones on board). <--- probably going to announce this at MWC.
Turns out you can deploy with the new SDK! I do have lockups though on every other deploy... a simple unplug and re-deploy fixes.
looks kinda slim...
How to: Test Copy and Paste in Windows Phone Emulator
What’s in the January 2011 Update
The following are included in the Windows Phone Developer Tools January 2011 Update:
Copy and Paste
Copy and paste is now enabled on Windows® Phone 7 in the following controls:
*
System.Windows.Controls.TextBox
*
System.Windows.Controls.PasswordBox
*
Text input fields within the Microsoft.Phone.Controls.WebBrowser control.
Developers can test the copy and paste functionality in the new Windows Phone Emulator. For more information, see How to: Test Copy and Paste in Windows Phone Emulator. End users can use the copy and paste functionality only after receiving the corresponding update to the Windows Phone 7 operating system.
Most applications already published to the Windows Phone Marketplace do not need to be recompiled to take advantage of copy and paste functionality. Copy and paste will work automatically for end users after they receive the corresponding update to the operating system.
Caution:
In applications that have pivot or panorama controls that contain text boxes, users can unintentionally change panes when trying to copy text. To prevent this problem, open your application, recompile it, and then resubmit it to the Windows Phone Marketplace.
Windows Phone Capability Detection Tool
Detects the phone capabilities used by your application. When you submit your application to Windows Phone Marketplace, Microsoft performs a code analysis to detect the phone capabilities required by your application and then replaces the list of capabilities in the application manifest with the result of this detection process. This tool performs the same detection process and allows you to test your application using the same list of phone capabilities generated during the certification process. For more information, see How to: Use the Capability Detection Tool.
Windows Phone Connect Tool
Allows you to connect your phone to a PC when Zune® software is not running and debug applications that use media APIs. For more information, see How to: Use the Connect Tool.
Updated Bing Maps Silverlight Control
Includes improvements to gesture performance when using Bing™ Maps Silverlight® Control. For more information, see Bing Maps Silverlight Control for Windows Phone.
What’s in the WPDT Fix
After installing the Windows Phone Developer Tools Fix, application developers can deploy XAP files over 64 MB in size to physical phone devices for testing and debugging.

[Q] Mod Windows RT to enable Remote Desktop

In the past, Windows has had editions for consumers that did not include Remote Desktop enabled. Usually there was a patch to enable it. Recently it has been proved how there is almost no difference between Windows 8 and Windows RT and that RT is just a port of Windows 8. So what about all the system files? They can be changed just like x86 Windows. So what about enabling Remote Desktop, so we don't need a ARM remote app that we need to unlock Windows for, and we can use what comes with Windows. In the past we modified the termsrv.dll file and changed some registry settings. I've included the Windows 8 and the Windows RT versions of termsrv.dll so that maybe some clever ones might try and crack a solution to enabling it on Windows RT.

termsrv is a system service and how can we use a modified termsrv.dll before we use the Jailbreak tool?maybe we can edit termsrv.dll in the memory.
We can't, I suspect. Even after jailbreaking, the lack of a signature on a system file may be a problem. It's worth a shot, though.
termsrv.dll -should- be a usermode library that would be editable after the jailbreak.
I am able to take ownership of the file and replace it. But it won't use the termsrv.dll from my windows 8… I'm almost positive it is because the dll is different depending on architecture. But it should be as easily replaceable as any system file on windows 8, am I right? I don't see why it wouldn't but I could be wrong.
Yeah, pretty much. You definitely won't be able to use the Win8 version (x86 machine code, ARM processor, not gonna fly...) but a modified version of the Windows RT version might work. Bear in mind that since modifying the DLL will invalidate the signature, this won't work if the signature validation is enforced (i.e. you'll have to jailbreak).
Should be possible using the Remote Debugging Tools or, even better, cdb. Put it in a .cmd file in autorun and voila

Please!! Remote desktop would be awesome enabled on the Surface RT, if someone could work on it I know a lot of people would be very grateful!
I've already posted a method that should enable RDP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36386089&postcount=211 - no need to patch DLL, and would work on an a locked device. But you'll have to manually edit binary registry value, instead of using a provided tool.
I have not tested RDP, but after using this method I was able to recover an option of joining device to Active Directory domain (it was blocked by the similar policies).

Wouldn't both methods work though? Your method works by enabling features from other editions by telling Windows that's what edition it is running. It disables it when the Software Protection service restores it to the original template according to the edition. By patching the DLL file, you could trigger Remote Desktop to work without it needing to check in with the kernel policies.
I mean unless you have a way to modify these policies without all the extra occuring, it would work. But Bitlocker and the Software Protection service getting involved...it just sounds like a lot of extra work for something much bigger in the end, and I know there must be an easier way to force Remote Desktop to work without listening to these policies because it has been done in the past.

Again, please if you were able to join an RT to the domain. Please let me know what you did. Would love to not get prompted to log in into PowerShell.

As I've already wrote - use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36386089&postcount=211
1. Edit registry:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
SetupType=1
CmdLine="cmd.exe"
and reboot. You will enter the setup mode. You would not see the mouse cursor in this mode, and you'll need a hardware keyboard.
2. Open this reg_binary value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions\ProductPolicy. Look for unicode string "WorkstationService-DomainJoinEnabled", it is near offset 0x4000. Look at this screenshot:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/526/35796208.png/
Select the "00" byte that follows the zero byte after the 64 (64 00 == unicode "d" letter) as you see on the screenshot. Overwrite it with 01. Be careful not to insert a byte, you need to overwrite the existing byte!
3. Rename sppsvc.exe to anything else so that it would not run on boot and reset ProductPolicy ("ren sppsvc.exe sppsvc.bak")
4. Reboot. Now the option to join the domain would be available.
I have not tried to add workstation to domain myself - try that and post here. After adding to domain you may try to rename sppsvc.bak back to sppsvc.exe as otherwise you'll get the "unactivated" Windows RT. I think that this would only remove the add to domain UI, but the RT would be still domain-joined.
I've tried to edit the remote desktop settings keys - this unblocked the corresponding options in the computer settings, but I was unable to connect. Maybe this is due to absence of RDP code in terminal server service - I don't see anyone listening port 3398 though TermServer service is running.

You have to return it back, otherwise you'll be annoyed with the activation reminders.

We could possibly patch sppsvc to not check, then start the service up after jailbreaking it.
I'm honestly not sure if this would be considered piracy or not, though.
Edit: I used the program to set every value to 1 in setup mode (The latest jailbreak tool works in setup mode), and I didn't see any change for anything dealing with RDP.
Edit 2: Perhaps I shouldn't have set 'Disable' to 1. Regardless, I set it to 0 and the options popped up, but I can't get anything to go. As mamaich stated, I'm not seeing anything listening on port 3389. netstat -a -b on a desktop with it enabled says it's opened by CryptSvc, but I'm not seeing anything with CryptSvc that's not there on the tablet. That could just be netstat guessing which service running under svchost is actually running it, too.

So is it true? that your device stays domain-joined after you restore sppsvc.exe?
@ Netham45, you could try to open up W81x86 termsrv.dll and go to these hex locations to find out what functions needed patching.
Hashes
File: W81x86\termsrv.dll
CRC-32: 202cd912
MD4: a879d39b8fbcd968b525af05a66aaf2c
MD5: 7a8e1158291cf4c8d8474a2091b9bf6d
SHA-1: e10028b074d24605e05b5e0bafd42f6a93ac01ad
1550F-15520
17428
A1B29
Then go into WinRT termsrv.dll, jump to those functions by name (because offsets will be different between x86 and RT) and Jmp or Nop as needed for WinRT. Afterwords it could be added via CDB / KD on-the-fly.

Windows 10 on Surface RT : additional apps + WPF support

Thanks to the help of this forum, I have successfully installed Windows 10 on my Tablet Surface RT 1.
I was wondering 1) if there were additional applications to install somewhere else than the store and 2) how to get support of WPF (which appears not to be the case by default).
Below some of my findings.
Installation of recompiled applications
On page https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092348, GoodDayToDie did the great job of collecting several apps recompiled for Windows RT (work done between 2013 and 2015). I tried Notepad++, but I encountered a "missing DLL" error.
I solved this issue by installing vcredist_arm.exe from https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=30679
It contains the C libraries used by the cross-compilation process. I have made Notepad++ and prboom (a Doom equivalent) to work. Qupzilla (browser) also technically works but does not support https, so makes it pretty useless.
Support of WPF
The Windows 10 ARM version apparently does not support WPF. I tried the procedure described on page https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-8-rt/rt-development/wpf-windows-rt-devices-t3763345 and it worked !
Thanks a lot @black_blob !
Some tips:
* The 7z file containing the DLLs and the instructions is in the "downloads" tab of the page
* Just follow the instructions located in the "notes.txt" file. There was no file already existing on the Windows 10 ARM version when I did the copy of the files.
* I have disabled hardware acceleration as described in the instructions, because the forms of my test application were blank.
=> I had to take ownership of the Avalon.Graphics Registry node, and to give the rights to my account before being able to add the DisableHWAcceleration registry key.
You can now write C# WPF applications targeting .NET 4.5, they will work (unless you use unsupported references) !
As an example, have a look on the image attached. It shows sample apps from https://github.com/microsoft/InteractiveDataDisplay.WPF. I just compiled the code on a standard PC and then moved and run the binaries on the tablet.
Hi. I need help on disabling secure boot. i tried downgrading it ti 8.0, i managed to unlock bitlocker but still I cant disable secureboot. the secureboot file only shows F3 options. is there any fix into this? thanks
I tried this 3 months ago but I realized not all compiled programs for WPF work, but it's still great.
