Blue screen after kernel flash - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

What's up everyone? I am having a strange problem when trying to flash just about any kernel on my N7. While I'm not a developer or anything, I'm not new to flashing ROMs or Kernels by far. In fact, my love affair with smartphones began when I got an HTC Apache with Windows Mobile 5. Anyway, every time I try to flash a kernel, it will show successful, and then the phone will boot into a fuzzy/pixelated light blue screen. Eventually, this screen will go away and my device will be pretty much locked up. All the images will have turned blue and orange, and the only way for me to get back into recovery will be to hold volume down + power, until the phone shuts off. The only kernel I have had any success with is Glitch, and I have even had this happen with it a couple times.
I always make sure to read through the instructions, and have done lots of searching here, and via Google. After I flash a rom, I will make sure the N7 boots up, and works properly, then reboot into recovery, do a full wipe, and flash the zip from TWRP. My most recent attempt was with Buttered AOKP w/Aroma installer. It walks you through the steps in a manner that should make this easy for anyone. It give you the option to wipe cache and kernel, which I always do, but no go. The only way I can get Glitch to run on it, is to complete the whole process twice.
Sorry if the answer is right under my nose, but I couldn't take it anymore and had to ask. I've never once bricked a device, nor have I had issues flashing kernels on any device before. Somebody please restore my sanity!!! I didn't have much to begin with.

Currently on: [ROM] Buttered Flo AOKP 4.3.1 [+Aroma] [2013-10-12]
It has all the kernels built into the aroma installer, so I would assume they are all compatible. Some more than others.
I got 3.4.1 Glitch-Flo to run on it, but had to return phone to stock, and flash twice, to get it to work. The aroma installer also has the option to use Faux Kernel in one of three flavors. I tried the "Ultra CCCCCCOMBO" first, and then the "Enhanced Stock", but no go.
When I go to the thread for both kernels, it says they are CAF kernels, but it's kind of strange they they would be included as an option in the rom. I have tried a few other roms, with various kernels too, and not had any luck. I want to get a log to post, but I'm not sure if I will be able to pull it via ADB, when the device is pretty much unresponsive.
Thanks for your response, and let me know if what you think about the CAF kernels being inlcuded with the AOKP rom.
Thanks,
Yam

Sooooo..... Isn't aokp based of the cm kernel? If that's the case, any of the kernels I am trying should work. I would post this in the ROM thread, but its happened with just about every ROM kernel combination in have tried. What's the dealio

Any update on this? I am having the exact same problem with my Nexus 4 running ProBAM 2.0 ROM. I have tried flashing every kernel and every version possible and it either freezes before boot (Google logo) or I get the blue screen... help anyone? I really want to flash a kernel with FauxSound, that's really all I want. Thanks so much!

Having Trouble Flashing Kernels

Hey all, I need a bit of assistance. I'm running the DarthStalkerV3 ROM on my SGH-T999 and haven't been able to successfully flash a new kernel over it. I'm not exactly new at this, but I'm stuck here. Every time my flash procedure is back up apps, back up sms, backup current rom w/ CWR, factory reset, wipe dalck, wipe cache, install from SD card.
When I choose the kernel's .zip file it flashes fast (too fast) so something must be wrong right? I go ahead and reboot, but after the Samsung GS3 boot image i get a black screen with the notification light stuck on and the phone blazing hot. However, the start up sounds functioned as normal. I've tried several different kernels (KT747 [both AOSP and TW], Trinity [Der], and OC/UV) but to no avail. I can't post in the dev threads yet as I'm new here, but any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Solved
Alas, I found that I had overlooked whether or not the Darth Stalker ROM was AOSP or TouchWiz based. I had been trying to flash Kernels of AOSP based ROMs. The issue was resolved when I used the TouchWiz versions of the Kernels. Small detail, very important. Fortunate I backed everything up and didn't brick my phone

Any idea why no rom will work? (CDMA)

I recently recieved my One V and finally decided on rooting/installing a custom rom. I came from an Optimus V and had no problems installing a custom rom in that.
However it seems that no matter what kernel/rom I use they eventually lock up within the first 5 minutes of booting and restart. I've tried practically everything and can't get them to work. I wanted to ideally run the CDMA Pacman Rom w/ the Supersick kernel. Any help would be greatly appreciated so I have can have this working before work tomorrow.
Did you do a full wipe ???

"It ain't workin" isn't enough information for anyone to troubleshoot from.
Be more specific on what you did, which instructions you followed, what ROM and what kernel, what sort of computer you're running, where you're downloading from, and the steps you are taking. If none of the ROMs are working, the problem is probably not the ROM, if you know what I mean...

Full wipe as in? (sorry, still a bit new). I did do a factory reset in CWM before installing whichever ROM I was trying at the time. I wiped all caches too.

I used the HTC One V AIO Toolkit to unlock the bootloader, get root, install CWM 6.0, create a backup and then install a kernel (I used the Super Sick JB one). From there I used CWM to gain access to my SD card and transferred over the CDMA Pacman ROM (after wiping everything clean) and then installed the ROM. It booted up successfully however as stated in a minute or so it would freeze up and restart itself. Even if I don't do anything after a reboot it'll still reboot itself anyways.
I did a bit of research and I'm thinking it could be due to the OTA Radio update from 2-3 weeks ago? I'm at my bootloader now and it says I have radio version 1.00.00.0928.
Any further help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. It's worth noting that I've tried many different Kernels (repeating all the steps above with full wipes every time) and different ROMs that were supported by the kernels. I've even tried to restore my phone back to stock and it just starts skipping at the VM Boot screen.
Oh, and I'm running Windows 7.
You mean the Rom booted normally right ?? If yes then the problem is with the Rom

Pardon my ignorance but that just doesn't make sense. I've tried several different ROMs with the correct kernel's (Pacman, CM9/10, AOKP JB) and it's all the same scenario. They all boot (or occasionally don't boot and restart themselves at the boot animation) and then reboot themselves once they're pass the lock screen.
Like I said even currently if I restore my stock rom file it just loops at the VM Boot animation (which doesn't play fluidly).
Figured out the issue . It was radio version 1.00.00.0928 messing up my kernel.

[Q] Flashed update, now I have a blank screen

Hey all -
I have a T-Mobile Galaxy SIII with TWRP, AOKP JB Milestone 5 and GooManager. I got a pop-up for AOKP JB Milestone 6 this morning, so I downloaded it and added that file, Lean Kernel 2.9 and gapps (latest that could be downloaded) to the flash list. I set my Dalvik cache to clear before flashing anything, then rebooted the phone to flash everything. Immediately after the flash, the phone seemed to reboot, but with a blank screen. After a while, the capacitive buttons on the front started working and when I plugged the phone into my computer the file transfer program popped up.
However ... at no point can I ever get anything to display on the screen. I've tried rebooting into recovery (volume up, home button, power button) and nothing. I don't really care about the data on my phone, I have proper backups of everything. But what I can't seem to do is get it to a point where I can recover it. What are my options here if rebooting into recovery doesn't work?
Thanks!
As an addendum, the phone is clearly booted into the OS. I have a blinking notification LED that indicates a new e-mail, and calls placed to the phone cause it to ring. I just can't see .... anything on it.
I was able to get into TWRP, somehow. I took out my T-Mobile SIM card and had it plugged into USB. I held down the recovery combo and then it booted up into recovery. It also displayed the Galaxy SIII white splash screen for the first time since the bad flash. What the hell.

so was you able to use your phone again i say go back to a nandroid you have or flash a rom that you know works good on your phone without that white screen and trouble shoot from there that it very strange indeed if you get success with the other just try posting in the ROM thread that you flashed you could possibly get more help where it happened :good:
I went back to AOKP Milestone 5 after doing a full wipe. I saw a number of graphics changes in the Milestone 6 code review, so it's possible that had something to do with it. In any case, I'm no longer panicing
Does mr6 use the 3.4 kernel? If yes, then you were using the wrong version of leankernel.
Ya its all kernel related and user error.

I assumed it was user error. I just wanted to lay out the steps I took, so I could get some help on a recovery path. I thought that a JB based ROM would work with any kernel that supports JB. Looks like I was wrong.

Nope, JB can be AOSP, TouchWiz, 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.2, 3.0 kernel, 3.4 kernel. Just need to read and make sure you know what you're doing before just doing it. That's why I frown at people being lazy (not just you) and not reading the forums and such, and just using apps to update and flash.

Thank's for the condescension, I appreciate being called lazy. I might not have an encyclopedic knowledge of Everything Android, but between the knowledge I do have and the details I read on the AOKP release page, I saw nothing that indicated I _couldn't_ run LeanKernel, especially when it was only a point release on the same ROM I was previously using.
I had a look at the changelog that's available on their page. It's pretty lame. http://gerrit.sudoservers.com/#/q/status:merged,n,z that one will probably have the kernel info. A good rule of thumb is when you flash a new rom, wait until the kernel is up to date (release date). For instance, don't flash a 3/01 kernel on a 4/24 rom - wait for kernel update.
I don't recommend flashing anything with the 3.4 kernel right now. Even if you manage to pull off stability, it's still laggy and eating about 3x the battery it should. This goes for the custom kernels, too. I'll put up with stability issues, but can't deal with bad battery. Already bad enough as it is. Need my phone during the day and not near a charger.

calm down lol, you could have read up any of the kernel threads that there are some compatible issues with kernels and roms right now.

[Req] Best mod with much less bugs for I927R

Hi
Guys i need your help. Pleas can someone tell me for now what mods is much better for I927R (Also withe very stability and with much less bugs) ?!
I found Liquid Smooth but it have some problem so i need your guide about other mods.
Thank you
ICS Roms are the best and most stable... Stock ICS from AT&T UCLJ3 or any roms based off of it ... Dman's daily driver, Ice Pop Rom by RawRaw, LiteRom by TheGreaterGood...
Unfortunately none of those are being maintained but I had been running Dman's for the last couple months, great battery life when paired w/ JuiceDefender (20+hours of heavy use when I'm not sleeping).
Now the newest CM10.1 by Spyke seems pretty solid ... Just a couple of issues.
ICS is the only one you'll get bug free, though. Stock is hard to compete with when we're pairing up roms without a true Devdeloper.
On this subject, I've just reverted back to using IcePop ROM after (unhappily) downgrading from Spyke's latest 10.1 ROM - just mainly because of the Bluetooth headset issue, which I really need working for work purposes.
I'm just wondering if there are any ICS builds that have GPS working correctly? I tried flashing the Rogers modem (since my phone was originally a Rogers import, flashed to AT&T ICS, then played with ICS from there) and first time I ran GPS status it took 771 seconds... I'm going to keep trying just in case that was the first time only, but 12 minutes is still a very long time for an initial fix .
Also - I've found that I'm getting more and more bootloop problems even with clean installs - so wiping cache, data, dalvic, etc. Is there some way to do a *thorough* wipe without bricking the phone? I can back all my data up no worries, but next time I move to JB (in the optimism that the BT issues will be fixed soon, judging by the positive progress being made by Spyke ) I would like to do a clean build from scratch and not have to gamble being able to start the phone up again
David - I always go into mount options of CWM and format /system prior to a new flash .. I'm not sure if flashing with Odin will get rid of any previous settings, its something to attempt though.
I, also, had reverted to using JB Because GPS wouldn't work ... There's a thread in here (search for it) that shows the solution to the GPS fix, its editing sirgps.conf and gps.conf ... I was getting a fix on GPS in under 30 seconds.... GPS was a huge let down in the stock ICS rom, Even when using TheGreaterGoods LiteRom w/ GPS fix I found after a couple of days my gps didn't hold....
Thanks for the reply.
I was considering formatting /system this morning when I was getting stuck in a boot loop from trying to get M3 running, but decided it was a risk I'd have to check up on first . Next time I do a build from scratch (I'm going to resist until the BT stuff is working - fingers crossed!) I'll do that.
I remember having a look at the gps.conf fix but don't recall anything about sirgps.conf - so I will look it up, thanks!
As an aside, I've been checking the GPS fix a couple of times since my last post and it is coming up in under 30 seconds each time... I'm wondering if my attempt to flash the Rogers modem did in fact fix the issue... I'd do a reboot but I'm too scared I won't get the phone up again XD
EDIT:
Found the fix, I did a few of the changes (rather than all of them), and it's now picking up 8 satellites instead of 3-5, and getting a stronger signal from each... and all I did was point it to the AU ntp server, and tell it I'm not on the ATT network . I'll save the suggested settings to a text file on my SD card so next time I'm out and about and if it plays up I'll have access to the details.

Had to restart my phone tonight and got caught in a boot loop again... after trying a few things I flashed Lite Kernel (I'm still using ICS again at the moment) and that seems to have solved the boot loop issues. I'm thinking that with all the ROM flashing I've been doing the fact that I actually had the phone running without flashing an ICS specific kernel (after running JB) was screwing things up.
Interestingly though, I tried installing Spyke's M3 ROM from a complete user wipe, system format, everything gone - and I still got a boot loop so next time I try it I'll grab a copy of LiteKernel and do that separately.

That has to be very concerning to you, I've never had an issue booting any ROM. And very strange flashing the Kernel separately would resolve your booting issues...
Did you try to flash any of the stock roms w/ Odin ? I have read that we can only flash back to stock Gingerbread from JellyBean if we flash a GB or ICS CWM ROM and then go back with Odin otherwise there will be boot issues.
If I were in your position I would try and do a full revert back to the earliest version of gingerbread I could find on samfirmware and then use Kies to udpate - THEN I would retry flashing to a newer JB or ICS Rom.
Pretty time consuming but that is the price we pay to mod

My phone has an issue, simple I couldnt reboot it, I must power off and wait a little. You can try it when you flash something, just remove battery and usb cable, and wait 2 minutes, before you turn on.

Not yet. I'll have to check which ones I have - I'm certain I have the AT&T ICS rom from November but then I'd have to go digging through my email for the unlock code again, so I'm trying to avoid doing that at this point . If i can find the stock GB Rogers rom at some point I might flash that one back on before I do any more upgrades. The phone is up and running at this point though, so I'm not too fussed. I've also noticed that it's a little quicker than before so I think the version of LiteKernel I installed was a good idea anyway.

I've tried pulling the battery a few times, but probably no longer than 30 seconds. Next time I'll give it a couple of minutes. I tend to do this late at night when I'm not expecting any calls (except fire brigade but I have a pager for that too) so time without a phone is no issue to me
Yesssss
After much irritation at continually getting stuck in boot loops again, I've 'Oneclicked' the phone twice, got fed up with the AT&T ICS ROM within about 5 minutes, gave up on IcePop because of buggy GAPPS...
And thought, bugger it. Format /system. Factory reset. Clear cache + Dalvik. Installed in this order:
Jellybean 4.2 ROM from 0217
Spyke's M3 update
PAC rom
GAPPS dated 0427
"Kick-ass Kernel"
and it BOOTED FIRST GO
I am pleased
Does JB need already to be installed before putting the M3 revisions on? Maybe that's where I've been going wrong all along, because my attempts at running both the standard M3 and PAC ROM (even immediately after OneClicking) resulted in boot loops or eternal boot loading.
Uhh... what do you mean by "One Clicking" ??
I know there's a "superoneclick" that will flash and root the rom all at once, but I never personally found it to work for our glides.
Using CWM and installing the ROM through the CWM boot menu is severaly key presses so ... not too sure what you're referring to.
Also, I've always downloaded to a hardwired computer then copied over USB to my phone and flashed ... sometimes the download will have errors if I grab it from my phone.
I'm assuming it's a variant of SuperOneClick... The title is 'Odin3Excution v1.85' and then underneath it says 'I927UCLG9_OneClick'.
And it worked just fine, I did have a stock rom that I tried to flash with Odin but it kept giving me errors, the OneClick method worked.

Interesting... for future reference, www.samfirmware.com has the stock firmwares, then there's the superUser file floating around the forums that allows you to root by flashing it. Passed that, remove bloat.
Glad you got it working! Welcome to JB

Issues With Kernels

Hi there!
I have a bit of a problem with my T-Mobile S4 and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to remedy the situation. So here is the problem;
Two days ago, I was playing PPSSPP and then I saved the state so I could eat lunch. When I came back to play, I loaded the state and then all of the sudden, my screen jumbled for a split second then went black. I tried to restart my phone, but it would always boot up and then go back to a black screen. I then reinstalled my ROM and was able to use my phone again. Thinking that it was over, I decided to re-flash my kernel. But then, it happened again, only this time, I could kind of turn my screen on but it was all messed up. See photo below. I re-flashed my ROM once more, made a titanium backup of my apps and then proceeded to wipe my whole phone through TWRP, going to wipe -> advanced wipe and then selecting every check box except for external sd and USB otg. Afterward, I re-flashed my ROM once more, booted my phone to make sure it worked then flashed the kernel same thing happened. SoI tried a couple different kernels but they all produced the same results. Just a jumbled screen. What could have went wrong? And is there a chance I can fix it?
ROM used - ParanoidAndroid 3.99 RC2
Kernel used - KT-SGS4
Other Kernels tried - Chronic Kernel, Blue ROM kernel
Anyone ever have this problem?

I have never heard of this problem. It seems you have tried your best to fix it...
My suggestion is to go back stock and see if the problem is still there. If it is then its a hardware problem.
If its not...re-root and flash a rom and go from there.

This...but use Odin to go back to stock. Dont' just try to flash a stock ROM.
REALLY reset it hardcore by using Odin to flash the stock firmware package in its entirety.
That's what I was thinking about doing, but I can't download the stock image. The download never completes. I've thus far tried to download from the hotfile mirror and from stockROMs but they're always slow and never complete. What I'd really like is a torrent, but if anyone knows of any other mirror or what might be going wrong, I'd appreciate a point in the right direction.
Thanks!

Flash the 10.16 AOSP 4.3 build of KT's kernel. Any build newer than that is for CM based ROMs compiled AFTER 10.20.

I am trying to download it from my PC. :/
Also, I tried the earlier KT kernel as that was the one I had on hand. Same thing happens.
