Does the Startech.com SLMPT2HD Slimport adapter work with the Nexus 7 FHD? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi there, I'm thinking of buying the Startech.com SLMPT2HD Slimport adapter for connecting my dad's Nexus 7 2nd gen to his HD tv screen via HDMI.
I know that theoretically this should work but I also read that some of the available adapters don't work (well) in practice.
Can anyone on these forums confirm that the SLMPT2HD actually works with the new Nexus 7?
Thanks a bunch,
ries

Well, for anyone interested, I found out that it works fine according to a video review on Amazon.

I just bought this adapter and was able to test it today.
The adapter doesn't work for me either :crying:
I have an MHL adapter that I tried with my GNex to test out the HDMI cable and that's fine so I don't know why it wouldn't work.
The only thing I could think of is maybe my TV's don't support 1080p60 coming out of the device??? I don't really buy into that though as both my TV's say they do support that.

Sorry, can't post any links yet. Google for "Startech.com SLMPT2HD Slimport adapter amazon" and you will find the Amazon page with 1 customer review accompanied with a video review. The guy in the video mentions he is using the adapter with a Nexus 7.

I sent an email to the Amazon vendor who told me to contact startech. That was two days ago and I haven't heard anything yet. I'm going to return the adapter if I don't hear anything today.

I also contacted Startech.com and got a quick and friendly reply that didn't help me much:
The SLMPT2HD adapter is designed to work with any device that are MyDP enabled.* The adapter has been tested on a number of phones and tablets I just can't speak to this specific one.* If there was known*issues with the Google/Asus Nexus 7 (2013) we most likely wouldn't have released it.

The response I got early this morning
Thank you for your inquiry!
There is no specific configuration of our SLMPT2HD required for functionality, it works as an external signal format converter.
have you confirmed with the documentation for your device that it utilizes a Slimport, and the steps required to enable external monitor output on that device?
have you tested our SLMPT2HD with a different model output device?
If you have any further questions, please contact us.

Yep... I wouldn't recommend buying this. I have to pay to return it, and they won't refund the money to me until they've tested it and if they say it isn't defective then no refund. Waste of $30 unless I can figure out how to get it to work on the N7FHD

Can vouch for $29 Analogix Slimport adapter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWGB6CU/) which I originally bought for the Nexus 4 vs the unknown Startech SLMPT2HD at $39.

The signal level for Slimport on the Nexus7 FHD is very low compared with the Nexus 4 and 5. Most Slimport adapters will not work with the Nexus 7 FHD unless specifically designed for it. Startech.com's SLMPT2HD has been re-worked to be compatible with the Nexus7 FHD low signal levels. The new stock is available now, so any new adapters ordered going forward will work with the Nexus7.

Just bought one, one of the guys in the reviews for it said that he bought it for the Galaxy Nexus and it works, but you need to have a 3rd-party app installed, which someone here at XDA already made last week and put it into the market. I should have it sometime next week.

[Q] Device that would allow me to connect Nexus to tv?

I don't know if there is a specific micro usb cable to hdmi convertor that I need to get in order to play my Nexus 7 to my tv. I don't remember if I read correctly, but I think I remember there being an article saying the Nexus 7 has a difference in its build, in which it needs a specific device to connect itself to an HDMI tv. Not sure though. If anyone has any recommendations, I would appreciate it. I am basically only trying to look at these avi files on my tablet to a tv.

You need a Slimport adapter (Not MHL which is a different competing technology!). Or get a Miracast adapter there are dongles , and use wireless access).
Unless you're running a CyanogenMod 10.2 build in which case, the
Slimport to HDMI function is not yet supported or working.

Will this work with the galaxy s3 that i want to buy? If yes will it work with any tv?(assuming of course it has hdmi port)
It has to be a MHL enabled TV. At least that's what I've read. I actually bought one of those cables and tested it on my HDTV and it wouldn't show anything at all. I tested on both my Sprint Galaxy S3 and my Nexus 7 FHD.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 uses MHL
The Google Nexus 7 FHD uses SlimPort
These are two different standards and the cable is not interchangeable.

Unfortunately I'm a new user so I have a few more posts before I can post a link in a reply. But if you go to best buys website and search MHL you will find what I have read. I think I included a screenshot in this reply.
Just because it says it on bestbuys website doesn't make it real. The MHL standard is designed to convert to regular HDMI. Any HDMI TV should work fine with it.
No offense to anyone. But I'm going to take the word of Best Buy's website unless, you have proof besides your say so.

There is no such thing as a MHL enabled TV. MHL works on anything HDMI ready. The only thing is if you are running a AOSP based rom, it will not work, right now i only works on TouchWiz.

Actually, there is such a thing, but it's not that important.
An MHL-compatible TV will supply power (5V/500mA in 1.0, 900mA in 2.0. and 2A in 3.0) to the adapter and charge the phone.
A non-MHL-compatible TV won't do that and you'll have to connect your own charger, but it will work fine otherwise.

So if the tv has an hdmi port and i have a power supply, i should have no problem it seems...
If the only difference is the USB ports are more powerful then I don't see how that has anything to do with MHL.
I have successfully tried my MHL cable on many TVs and I've always used it's own power adapter plugged into the wall.
I have heard there are crappy MHL adapters that do not work though.

Correct. an MHL TV just means you don't need to have a charger on hand, have a free outlet, have a long enough micro USB cable to get to that outlet, etc. etc.

I have the rocketfish receiver and it works on all my devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz but on the moto x it only works on 2.4ghz. Shame because 5ghz has better picture , no artifacts, and if you mirror on 5ghz you can still use 2.4 for WiFi for streaming .

From what I understand, miracast in general kind of sucks because of the poor standardization across brands/devices. I have a lenovo laptop, and I'm hoping the dongle I ordered will work with the laptop's widi feature, as well as my moto x and nexus 7. :fingers-crossed:

yeah thats mostly true but i've used the rocketfish with nexus 7 1st gen (modded to work) nexus 7 FHD, galaxy s3, galaxy s4, and moto x and only had issues with moto x on 5ghz
I just got a Netgear PTV3000 in the mail yesterday, it works well with the Moto X.
Have not had a chance to put it through the paces but was able to briefly test it out on a 32" 720p HDTV.
Screen mirroring looked sharp enough, also tried Netflix and it looked decent but not as "HD" as I would expect, not sure if it was Netflix bandwidth or Miracast itself being the limiting factor. I'll load VLC on the phone this weekend and try playing a local HD file to see what it looks like.
Got the Lenovo WD100 today. Works well with both my moto x and nexus 7. Ironically does not work with my lenovo win 7 laptop... go figure.
