I just saw a post on Lifehacker, using unrevoked3 to root my desire (id give a link but im new and apparently not allowed), and this seamed like a nice simple process, so i thought id give it a go. but before i do, i just have a few question that id really love a detailed answer or two to, if you would be so kind.
1. Am i going to brick my phone and cry because i bought it unlocked and cant get it replaced because im a poor student?
2. What the hell is this Radio business?
3. Can i put it back to normal so i can get back to OTA updates from HTC when they finally come to there Senses with FroYo (get it )
4. Am I going to lose all my stuff because i cant back it up before i root.
Thats basically it, if you can answer that, id be incredibility incredibility grateful.

1. if u follow the steps exactly as explained, and never touch the phone when it is installing flashing formatting etc etc then u get 99.9% u wont brick it
dont worry im also a student and i bet theres more of us here
2. hmm not sure how to explain what a radio is
3. yes u can, but dont see a reason why, cuz devs update roms quicker and add more functions to them
4. if you just root then no you wont loose your stuff, if you want to install a custom rom then yes you will loose it but you can always back it up using free rommanager back up
This is the main reason why I haven't rooted my Desire yet, despite 1 or 2 friends urging me to. They have Heros. I haven't got the money to replace it and seen as it's on contract I'd be pretty screwed for the next 13 months or something.

I was thinking the same.
It was when I run out of space to install apps and gmail stop working bcoz of low memory space warning.
I decided to take the plunge.
Used unrevoked to root my desire and installing my second rom today lol.
Oh and the radio is the file that contains radio setup for froyo roms.
the one you need for froyo rom is version 5.xx. eg. 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08.
so if you are going to install froyo based roms then you need the radio file update or all hell breaks loose.
you can update the radio then install the rom or the other way around up to you.
have fun and ask if you need help.
Was in a similar situation and finally took the plunge today.
Was 10x easier than I thought it would be. Follow the guides and you can't go wrong.

Radio is the part that handles WiFi, gps, 3G and all that stuff. E.g. you have low WiFi signal, you can update the radio to fix it.

Ok guys thanks for all the replies, I'm.defiantly doing it now, my phone alarm has failed to go off too many times now (hey any excuse to convince myself to do it lol) and I want to see if a new ROM will fix it.
Shall I go for OpenDesire or CyanogenMod? I want froyo, and I want it stable (preferably I would still love sense if that's possible).
Also on a side note, I don't want to appear idiotic, I know what a radio is, I just wasn't sure what everyone meant by "update" it, and why you have to do of separately to flashing the ROM.

The ROM's here don't include the radio hence why you need to update the radio seprately, most, if not all, the froyo ROM's will need the latest radio.

Bugs are to be expected but many fixes are to be expected too
opendesire from what i've heard but they lack sense i think, i wanted sense so i chose neophytes rom (it does slow down when i DL stuff from the market sometimes though, i should report it to him)
You flash a radio like a rom, just use unrevoked to do it
BTW use unrevoked with the rooting, easiest thing ever

i think it means you just locked your phone to the simcard that was in your phone at the time. Rooting it should unlock it again though
BTW here is an unrevoked guide, neophytes ROM and the radio (use the latest, not the leaked one), follow all the instructions to the letter and you should be fine (follow unrevoked's rom flashing instructions for the radio though, thats how i did it and gawd was it easy)

I'd tried the other way first and my phone wouldn't root (i was really really frightened when a HTC logo came up and stayed on for a whole 24hrs) so i tried unrevoked and it worked like a charm
Lets hope everything goes a bit smoother for you than me
That really was one of the easiest things i've ever done. Thank you so much for all your help, and the ROM suggestion, loving the new sense.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, can i root my desire, keep my current OS as it is and still get the OTA update to 2.2 as it would if my phone wasn't rooted?
I would try the modaco custom rom, search for it. Its based on the latest leaked rom from HTC so its stable, its froyo, it has sense as well as the new 2.2 features like tethering, new widgets, 720p video etc etc
i rooted my phone at the weekend and im loving it!

Agree, also have the modaco ROM. Best thing is that you bake your own rom and only put items that you really need.

Well mate.. I was pretty much in the same boat as you.. Student, wanting to root my phone, didn't know what all the stuff was.. And I'll try and rectify it for you as much as possible, following your points .
1. If you follow the guides which have been put up by unrevoked, or the guide on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189 or our lovely friends over at android.modaco http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/ then you shouldn't have a problem at all. I was feeling the same way, was confused and really didn't want to risk the rooting process.
2. The Radio.. It's not like a Radio which we use to tune in to FM and AM, think of it as something to help other processes work in the phone. Be it Wifi, 3G, HSDPA, GSM.. All these get updated with the new ROM's (Froyo) and they need the Radio to make them run smoother, and better. Think of a Radio as a driver when you're updating something on a computer. But BE CAREFUL when flashing the Radio, DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT touch the phone until it has completely finished booting (2 or 3 times, you'll know when it's finished).
3. You can put it back to normal any time, just by flashing an older ROM on to it, just have a look at some of the official RUU's on this forum.
4. The sort of stuff which you're worried about are photos, text messages and apps? Best way for this is to invest in MyBackupPro, where you can back up all of your texts online etc. For apps and all, why not download ASTRO from the Market? It can back up all your apps and install them again no problems.

coming from other android phones that i always was able to flash new roms,i find that reading the threads it seems a lot more complicated ,one thread saying do it this way ,another saying that way ,i dont know where to start,i would dearly like to flash a custom rom because i dont think T MOBILE will ever update[they could not even get the color phone i wanted,they said yes white ,they sent me grey].
is there a step by step instruction someone could point me to,i would be ever so greatfull
Coming from motorola droid 1 and gs2 this is definitely more work. I'm waiting a couple of days before I put cwm, make backup, root, and try roms.

Did you buy the global version and drop a tmo sim into it? I'm with tmo and only the S is available. I've been reading and hoping tmo makes this their next flagship device with the vanilla rom. I want this phone but dont want to pay the 300-400 for it.

He is using international version TMO UK. The phone is pretty new also as time goes by rooting tools will become simplified. There is an all in one tool in dev section.

This is the method I followed step by step. Coming from htc Hero the rooting method for the One X seemed complicated for me too but after a few attempts I managed to get it rooted and flashed successfully.
Just don't forget to flash the Boot.img first before flashing the rom. I forgot and it took me a while to figure out why my apps wouldn't run. Hope this helps.

Hi just wondering if anybody knows when we will see official firmware that we can play around with, and what is the process of flashing HTC phones, this being my first HTC, do they have simple programs like odin that I use with my gs2?
Your phone is already running "official firmware". As for flashing HTC phones, it's all done through the recovery menu. Things may be different for the One X as it's running Tegra 3 but as for now HTC phones do not have anything equivalent to ODIN.
Ok I see that method is fine, what I meant with “official firmware realises” is when will they be released so we can try different country’s/carriers firmware, for example on gs2’s you can get everything from the first realises of gingerbread to the latest ICS realises from all different country’s/carriers.
Not at present, no. We need S-OFF for that (the equivalent of fully unlocking the bootloader on a Samsung device)
At the moment we can go custom or use the ROM your phone came with

haha no worries same here mate. still trying to get to grips with the whole rooting process and flashing stuff here..my advice is best to read the guides on each rom thread. and also the tutorials that are available...trust me they do come in handly

I had a Wildfire S a few months ago, which I had owned for about 4 months (The Wildfire S was terrible) so I decided to root it.
To say I was happy after I had rooted was an understatement, I flashed CM7 onto the device, which extremely improved the phone.
The problem was, as soon as I flashed it, i started developing problems (not rom caused) such as a constant noise when in calls etc.
Now, my question is I own a HOX, which is an absolute epic phone to say the least.
I really want to use Vipers ROM / PerfectAndroid etc, but am so worried about rooting the HOX.
Is it worth rooting the HOX? What can go wrong and what can I expect to happen if I develop issues? (LIKE LAST TIME )

All of the ROMS for the HOX are really good, if you're worried might I suggest ARHD as it's the closest ROM to stock there is, aside from Maximus ROM.
If you follow my guide (in my sig) then the rooting will be okay

Thanks for your reply mate, I know rooting isnt a huge process in itself. Its just knowing that if (when?) something goes wrong with my phone, im totally screwed for the warranty.
Which may cause me not able to get replacement/fixed under warranty?

unlocking your boot loader will void you warranty, but if you have a fault less hox like i got then go for it

Is it worth it? Always personal ofcourse. Do you want to make backups? Lots of customizations? Just root to delete some system-apps or to install an add-blocker? Get the bloody fast Jelly Bean?
In my opinion: GO FOR IT
I don't know how old your One X is, but perhaps it's wise to wait a couple of weeks to see you have any faults.
Wait one or two weeks to see if it has any faults.
If it's faultfree then go root it
I tested mine 12 days before unlocking the bootloader.

It's not actually true that it'll void your warranty. Well not completely anyway, more often than not HTC will honor the warranty if it's a hardware issue, if it's software and it's messed up because you fscked up your HOX then it's on your own head... but it's incredibly hard to do so, it's pretty hard to completely brick a phone if you read and follow the guides and if you manage to brick it then you shouldn't even be holding it!
At least that's the general consensus nowadays...

My HOX is about 2 months old now, and seen no issues what so ever. I want to be able to customise it to be honest, thats about it. It runs smooth and fast as it is, but I get bored of things so easy and the Sense UI etc is boring me to death now .
And thats another thing putting me off rooting mate, JellyBean is (Should be) just around the corner? So don't know whether to wait, or Root

Ah I see, do you know of any cases where the hardware has gone wrong, and HTC have still honored the warranty even though they were rooted?
Was reading a thread of someone having a convo with HTC, and they adimantly stated that if the bootloader is unlocked you are not covered by warranty, and my understanding is that the bootloader HAS TO BE LOCKED to be rooted?

It is worth doing it, yes.
I waited tree months staying on stock, but rooted, then i decided to install ARHD 2.3.2. Stock was already very good but a custom rom gives the HOX the rest to be the best phone on market. Battery life increases, the handling is even more fluid and laggless as before.
What can going wrong? Well, the most common failure is to forget flashing boot.img as a separate step, because this is unusual against the procedure done with desire or others.
Also restoring a nandroid backup also requires to flash boot of the backup separately. If you keep the boot images at your PC and the ROM Zips on your device, you are well prepared to do this.

Yes I will make sure to back EVERYTHING up. I have a couple more questions.
I have seen people saying flash RUU, Flash Kernal, etc.
I don't know what the RUU is and im not very informed about Kernals, I know the ROM is the OS, the Kernal is the Driver? I think (NOT A CLUE ABOUT RUU)
And I have heard of battery life getting drained much quicker etc after root? Or people developing signal problems etc.
Finally, if I do root, and decide I don't like it, can I revert to stock and retain warranty?

had 3 phones...last one had a big gap on the left hand side and had issues with power button. had phone unlocked and rooted...left the phone unlocked but flashed back the stock rom that came with the phone...send it to the repair center and the phone came back brand spanking new and still unlocked and everything was covered by the warranty. as long as you do not fry the motherboard due to overclocking and you are careful what you flash and take time to read and search of what you want to do i say you are good to go mate...and like i said few minutes ago to someone else..if you want to customize and love playing with different themes then Viper is your rom...if you want a clean cut rom but still with the tweaks from Viper then ARHD or Renovate are the great roms and far more faster if you ask me...
plus do not forget there is MIUI based on sense framework which for me is awesome and has so many themes and lockscreens to play with and also JB roms to

Bah everyone is telling me to Root it, like I said yeah I wan't customisation with themes etc, which Viper has really drawn me into, but on the other hand I want a clean and bugless rom, that just WORKS GREAT.

All the roms are great :laugh:. Just pick what suits your needs. And good luck with the flashing!
And if you want bugless, stay away from the Jelly Bean roms. Fast as hell and buttersmooth but not completely bugfree. I'm waiting for the official HTC Jelly Bean-update, i hope the AOSP-rom-developers can bring us some magic than.

Don't suppose you know what happens when / if they release the official JB Rom,
Can you go back to stock roms, cuz I think when JB is released, I would want to go back to stock.
I've heard rumors in september. I repeat rumors!!!! Could also be december, you never know with HTC
And it's always possible to go back to stock. Only important thing is that you have a nandroid backup of your stock rom without root.
- unlock bootloader
- flash cwm
- do a nandroid backup!!!! and place a copy on your PC
to go back to stock after flashing custom rom:
- extract boot.img from your stock rom nandroid backup on your PC and flash it via fastboot.
- wipe data/cache, factory reset in cwm
- restore stock rom nandroid backup in cwm
- flash corresponding recovery from your stock rom via fastboot
After that you can OTA-update your One X and you're ready to enjoy some wonderful jelly beans

I know exactly what you mean. It took me a year before i rooted my desire. You root when you are ready for it.
Here's i.m.o. the best guide for rooting your One X: http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
Step 18: go to your location where you put the onexroot-folder
Step 39: Download cwm 5.8.4.0 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819 and place it in the onexroot-folder and flash it with fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
After flashing cwm, make a nandroid backup from your stock rom. Then you continue with step 40.
If you're ready with the guide and it's not ok, you missed something. This almost can't go wrong.

See, this morning I was all up for it.
I was like "Yeah, what can go wrong, the ROM's look brilliant, you've rooted and flashed a phone before and it was better after flash".

BAH why does Vipers ROM exist, I would be able to stay away from rooting without that ROM, I just love the red/blue themes where its all black etc.
hi I'm pretty new to the android os and I'm thinking about jailbreaking my HTC one x (tegra) to get jellybean, which im sick of waiting for and to get better performance. the thing is, iv read/watched a lot of guides on how to jailbreak/flash the one x and there is some confusing points and points in which the guides contradicts themselves. so just a few questions:
can you revert back to factory settings at any point? iv read in some guides that its impossible, I can't see why though?
what exactly is a ruu? is it the equivalent to a bios? is hboot a ruu?
I know that it is possible to brick your phone if you delete the ruu (hence why you use clockworkmod) but it seems stupid that the phone won't even know how to charge itself, is it that easy to brick?
iv heard that you can update the kernal, what's the advantage of doing this?
any tips on what to do and avoid when doing this, we all have to start somewhere
iv been using this as a main reference for the Rom I'm wanting to use.

a RUU is a leaked official version of an update, it is like a custom rom but it is stock and from HTC... when you buy an HTC phone it has certain RUU installed on it.
jailbreak is for iphones (which everyone here should hate), use the word "root" and "S-OFF" and "unlocked bootloader" when you are using an android phone
you can revert back to stock only if the RUU that you're on it has already been leaked.
the HOX is very very hard to brick! but sometimes i see cases of soft-brick which is easy to solve by the way.
our phone unfortunately doesn't have S-OFF (like almost every HTC phone out there except for the ONE X) so every time you flash a rom you have to flash the corresponding boot.img which contains important file to let your phone run with a certain custom rom.

Thanks for the swift reply, sorry I called it that, I had a iPhone for years but I ended up hating it(just it as a mp3 player now lol).
Well I currently havent done anything to my one x so its stock, but what I'm saying/asking is, surely I can just load a stock Rom and bootloader and be back to square one?
And as for the rom/boot.IMG I can see why it is a bit more complicated. So what's, in your opinion, the biggest reason to/you've flashed from stock?

There is no way for 100% back to stock (for now). Unlocking bootloader voids your warranty.
Why unlock and flash cutom rom? - Custom roms are far better than stock, better performance, longer battery life... no limit of customizing your phone.
The downside for me is only loosing warranty.

because every phone i buy (android of course) will get rooted! custom roms are awesome, and nerdy
So once you unlock your bootloader and put a new Rom on you loose your warrenty because you can't revert and hide the fact that's what you did?
Hmm I don't know if I should mess with this then, I would but iv not long got my phone back from warranty because of the hardware WiFi issue.
Can anyone really sell to me why I should flash? I mean I'm interested in doing it.

yes, you can't hide, once you have unlocked, that you have voided your warranty... you won't ever have something as stable and fast as custom roms, that's why you should root and unlock your phone
right so better proformace and better battery, is there anything else you root for? i mean what does everyone else root for, for that matter?? i mean i keep looking at my phone and thinking. Hmmm should i, shouldent i? lol
