[Q] Team Black Hat Adapter - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My son is trying to get his kindle fire back up and running. With not much success. He was reinstalling the software and must have wiped the device clean as now he cannot get back into recovery mode. When installing FFFF it says that there is no exec directory. He ordered a factory cable adapter from black hat under the impression that this would force the device into fastboot thus recovery. When he attached the adapter all that happened was that it went back to the kindle fire logo and is now showing offline status unknown. Before at least it was showing online. Are we mistaken that it should go to recovery (blue and white) kindle logo. We are a little tired of messing with it and are thinking of calling it quits. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. We have turned off and on, installed drivers, and switched cables to no avail.

You almost got it right. The error you received means the shell is no longer accessible and therefore unable to send necessary shell commands, like those used to change bootmodes. In order to fix the problem, a factory cable is needed to access fastboot, which gives you an alternative method of changing bootmodes (to access recovery) or flashing partition images (i.e. installing recovery) by use of fastboot commands. But the factory cable does not actually boot the device into recovery on it's own though.
Here's where it get's a little tricky though. Unless you know what to look for, it's difficult to know whether the device is actually in fastboot because the only thing that will be displayed on the screen is the Kindle Fire logo. You'll know if the device is in fastboot because the Kindle Fire logo will stay brightly lit, indefinitely. If the Kindle Fire logo flashes and/or gets slightly dimmed, then you'll know the factory cable you have is defective. With that being said, however, just because the device boots into fastboot mode, doesn't necessarily mean the computer will communicate with it. For that, you need working drivers.
Long story, short...you need to confirm whether the device is actually in fastboot before you can go any further.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the logo this morning and it came up brightly lit with no change so I am assuming it is in fastboot mode. That being said the device, in device manager it comes up as unknown usb device. Before it would come up as kindle and I would install the drivers and it would come up as an android phone adb composite. I went into device manager and tried to update the driver manually and windows tells me that the correct driver is being used for this device. I did unplug the adapter and go back with a regular data cable and that made no difference. Do you need to force it to use a different driver. I am trying to use the drivers that came with the KFU I downloaded.

Kindle drivers are notoriously touchy. Try uninstalling/reinstalling them a couple of times. I predict they will suddenly start working and you can proceed with installing custom recovery/rom.

Thanks for the respone, I have installed and uninstalled to where if I here the computer connect and disconnect one more time I might throw it against the wall. Are there specific steps that I need to take other than ordinary to unintall/install the drivers correctly or maybe drivers that are more sccuessful than others.

Ok, after sifting through a number of threads. I read where adb and fastboot are mutually exclusive and adb will not see a device that is in fastboot mode. Is that correct? And when you install the drivers with KFU does that contain the fastboot drivers? Or should you download SDK platforms tools which contains both? And then run fastboot commands to flash a recovery? If so, is there a good tutorial for someone that does not follow directions well?

Yes, adb and fastboot are mutually exclusive but the same drivers should work for each. You can try the drivers located HERE, or read the topic on understanding driver installation located HERE.
Of you are still unsuccessful in communicating with the device in fastboot while using fastboot commands, you may have to restore it with Firekit using the "shorting trick".

OK, here is an update. I was able to get the device into recovery and TWRP. Not sure what I did differently other than maybe standing on one foot, facing south and staring at the stars, but it worked. When all of this started it was right after my son updated the software to 6.3.2 via wifi, maybe something went wrong. So last night I was able to flash 6.3.1 back to the device and was told that it was done succesfully. Using adb I can see the device in recovery and the shell lsiting is ~ # ←[6n which I guess is good as it said there was no shell before. So now my question is could it possibly be a corrupt bootloader on the device as well as it was hung at the fire logo. If so, do I need to reinstall the stock bootloader and if so where do you find it or does it come with the software flash?

I have succesfully got the update file on the kindle, did all the wipes selected install and now seems to be hung at veryfing filesystem and partitions sizes. Can someone tell me how long a flash should take or is something wrong? Since I have never done this before I have no idea.

okay so i was trying to root my kindle fire and i didnt get su any where so then i tryed to install cwm and now its stuck at the yellow triangle and it wont go into recovery and it also will not connect to adb i need hellp ASAP
Install drivers as ADB composite with the Android SDK and then use this to change the bootmode
The link you posted is not working due to the period in the URL at the end.
Do not afraid. I have got the same experience Let God bless the search button

unzip fbmode.zip
adb push fbmode /data/local/fbmode
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/fbmode
adb shell /data/local/fbmode
adb reboot
Your kindle will "get stuck" on the kindle fire screen, but really it's just in fastboot mode.
fastboot -i 0x1949 boot twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0.img
Your device will now boot into twrp recovery, and flash the firefirefire bootlaoder. When done it will prompt you to reboot. Upon reboot you will get stuck on the "yellow triangle" screen of firefire fire.
fastboot oem idme bootmode 5002
fastboot reboot

Bricked Kindle
Okay, I'm not having the same issue, but I'm pretty sure I've completely, irevicalbly, bricked my kindle.
I know that I'm not in Fastboot mode, I've experienced that issue and solved it with the KFU.
Here's what I did:
I used the KFU to root my kindle. That worked fine. I was able to load all the Google apps (which was my initial goal). Then, I got greedy and decided that ICS was my next step - oops.
I followed the instructions on the following site:
androidauthority.com/kindle-fire-miui-4-ics-55853/
Note: I know, I'm an idiot - I should have paid attention to comments! UGH!
After I did this, I now only get the firefirefire logo and that is it. I can't load/reload TWRP and I can't change my bootmode to normal or recovery. The thing is, no matter which computer I plug the device into, the computer won't recognize the device. I get a message saying something "malfunctioned" when I plug it in. I've tried 3 different Windows machines (I've installed/reinstalled drivers I don't know how many times!) and I even tried loading Linux on a spare laptop and that didn't work either.
So, I tried the next thing I could think of. I followed the instructions on the following site:
ramble.karrth.com - Section "Troubleshooting TWRP
which involved removing the back cover, shorting a circuit (to force usbboot) and plugging my Kindle in. This didn't work for me either.
At this point, I'm willing to try anything. I'm not quite sure how to fix this issue. I think my next step is to either order a factory cable or make my own and try that, but if my bootloader is broke (truely broke) will that even work?
Please, if I should post this in another forum/place, just let me know. Any help appreciated!
I should also not that nothing comes up in my device manager. It does come up as a unrecognized USB bit goes away after telling me there was a malfunction.

If you get the yellow triangle logo to come up, then it's probably in fastboot mode. If you reboot it while it's connected to your computer and you get some device detection beeps from Windows, it's likely to be a driver issue. Look here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747671&postcount=2
You might want to read the first post in that thread too.
Watch carefully as the device boots up and you get the yellow triangle logo. If that boot logo comes up and stays there, it's in fastboot. If the boot logo comes up, the screens blacks out, and then the boot logo comes back up (dimmer) then it's either trying to get into recovery or booting into the OS and failing.
I would try setting the bootmode to normal in KFU and when it says "<waiting for device>" reboot the Kindle Fire. Since you have FFF, the fastboot program on your computer will wait for the Kindle Fire's FFF bootloader to get into temporary fastboot and reset the bootmode when the KF is ready.
But, the computer won't even recognize there is a device connected to it
I will have to try installing the drivers from the Android SDK... maybe that will turn up something. But, by installing the drivers from KFU, it doesn't work.
When I plug the device in, it beeps at me saying device is unrecognize and it couldn't install drivers because there was a malfunction. In the device manager (while that's happening) it shows up as an unrecognized usb device. Then, it goes away (the device doesn't stay in the device manager). Then, that whole thing happens again one more time. There isn't anything for me to update in the device manager... thoughts?
And because its not recognized in the device manger, kfu isn't picking it up

If you can't get the drivers working with the KFU distribution, you'll have a harder time with the SDK. They are the same drivers, but KFU has an updated, Kindle Fire specific .inf file for the driver and also installs the .ini file in the .android folder that you'll need. I don't know what you see in the device manager, but if you don't get one of the devices shown in the post I referred to earlier, I would try another Windows machine. You won't be able to do anything without getting it to detect your KF and load the proper drivers. If you are more adventurous, you could try pokey9000's Firekit (search for it) and try using linux to send it fastboot commands.
Yeah, that's my problem. I have tried 3 different windows machines (all windows 7) and, being the adventurous person i am I tried the Linux fix (removing back cover...) to no avail. All that did was make my kindle blink green. Not sure what that means either.
yea mine is stuck on the firefirefire boot screen

Well, if you can't get any of those scenarios to work out, maybe it's a hardware issue. It might be something as simple as a bad USB cable or something more serious within the KF itself. I've never had a problem with Windows or Linux not seeing the KF, so my hands on experience in this regard is limited... my KF has never been broken to that degree. I'm always curious to see what's going on with people's KF when they say nothing works, but my KF has never given me that opportunity.

Sometimes in order to install the correct driver you need to delete the original from your computer because it will continue to attempt to revert to the default but beforehand try rebooting your computer and the kindle

[Q] kindle fire stuck in fastboot

hi, my brother's kindle fire is stuck in fastboot after trying to root it and we have tried everything we could find from change usb.ini's tochanging the driver assoicated with it to using KFU to getting back into nornmal boot mode, none of which worked, adb wont reconigze it though the drivers for it to are installed and setup, thus my computer reads the kindle but we just cant get adb to see it, im sure if we can get adb to read it we can fix it from there, but we've tried just about every, and have tried everything that we have found, any help would be greatly appreciated, it has stock rom, install unknown apps checked, wil turn off and on just gets stuck at the kindle fire text (so im assuming its stuck in fastboot and its not a bad bootloader thoug not completely sure)

Assuming you've tried the obvious KFU methods of putting the device back to normal bootmode...
If you are in fastboot mode, adb won't recognize the device and it won't respond to adb commands. You must use fastboot commands to reset the bootmode back to normal. The adb_usb.ini file is only used by adb, so manipulating that file isn't going to do you any good either.
See if this guide helps you...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668159
It's important to have the device already connected to the computer as the device puts itself into fastboot mode. You will not be able to issue fastboot commands to it otherwise. Use the guide to make sure the KF is actually putting itself into fastboot mode. Then verify the interface and hardware details given.

thank you for your reply, i have tried fastboot commands as well but i will take a look at the link you provided, and will post if anything helps
ok i have tried the fastboot commands from that post and they have not helped, it stops at waiting for device i tried all 4 commands listed just in case, and all come up with the same thing, would this factory cable be somethine that would help. if so how reliable is it?
A factory cable puts the device into fastboot mode. If the device is already in fastboot mode, it's not going to help you at that point. I suggest you reread my last post and go over that fastboot guide carefully. Figure out what the device is doing and how your computer sees it.
well i tried for the hell of it to see if it would do anything to install the twrp recovery and well now the power light it orange and the screen wont turn on, i apologize if this isnt any issue, as ive stated this isnt mine its my brothers, and i dont quite know how to use it or what indicates whaton it, but i will re-read the post you linked but i didnt see anything of any use that i havent already tried
ok i just re-read it all, and im thinking the shorting trick is my only option, as my hardware ids do not match the ones stating its in fastboot (according to the article), if there are any better suggestions that would be great , thank you again for your responses
EDIT: it seems that installing the twrp fixed our problem, it just booted !!, thank you so much for your help

Logo flashes then blank screen. Help please?

I initially bricked my kindle with the KFU somehow so the static logo showed, but that was a relatively quick fix. I then got clockworkmod working, and flashed a ROM. Now it will show the standard kindle bootloader for a second, then the screen will flash white, and then I get a blank screen. ADB works, but neither KFU nor the Fire Unbrick Utility will recognize it, I just get waiting for device. This has left me really scratching my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Typically, this is caused by a bad download (failure to check MD5) or not " wiping" correctly. In your case, I'm willing to bet Clockwork is the culprit. Use fastboot to manually install TWRP to see if that fixes the problem, or try a different rom. Personally, and based on what I've seen in the recent past, I think Clockwork is not a safe bet in regards to custom recovery at the moment.

Thank you for replying. The problem is I can't get it into fastboot. When I turn on the KFU, it states that ADB is online but boot status is unknown. I can force it to reboot but I can't get it to fastboot. Whenever I try to install anything or repair it with the Kindle Fire Unbrick Utility, I either get waiting for device forever or exec '/system/bin/sh' failed. The default kindle bootloader is still installed, I think, and I can't get into clockworkmod at all.

See, this is why it's important to be extremely detailed with the issues you are experiencing, including all error messages.
Code:
exec '/system/bin/sh' failed
That indicates your shell has been damaged or corrupted. The only fix for this so far, is with a factory cable. Get a factory cable to put your device in fastboot.

Thank you. I just bought one. Just one question, when it arrives, how do I use it? Do I just use the KFU to install Firefirefire? Or do I have to use firekit? And do I just plug in the cable once to force fastboot then use a normal cable to flash a new recovery and bootloader? Sorry, I'm kind of new at this.
By plugging the cable into your usb port first, then to your device that has been powered off, the device will power on automatically into fastboot. After that it can be used to send commands and transfer data as a normal cable. Using it in a way other than I described will not enable fastboot automatically.

[Q] Kindle Fire Stuck on Boot Image

I was attempting to root my Kindle using the tools in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
It failed at "Installing FFF... Waiting on Device". It seems like this is an issue with TWRP. Since that failed the kindle gets stuck on the Kindle Fire logo and can only be powered off with the 20 second button press.
I am not sure where to go from here, any help would be great, thanks
This same thing has happened to me SO many times. What's happening is your Kindle is stuck in fastboot mode. This is usually caused by a driver related issue. You probably didn't have installed all the correct drivers. Try doing this to get it back to normal bootmode:
First make sure the right drivers are installed. Run "install_drivers.bat"
Then before plugging in or turning on your Kindle run "run.bat" and choose "1 Bootmode Menu" and select "1 Normal <4000>"
It should now say "waiting for device". Make sure your Kindle is still off then plug it in. It should boot up on it's own. Then KFU will recognize it and switch it to normal bootmode.

I did all of that and it still does not get past the splash screen. The kindle booted up on it's own, but KFU never went past <waiting for device> and the kindle never went past the splash screen.
Try researching into the Factory reset cable that Skorpion sells, that can help boot your kindle into fastboot mode and help unbrick it.
A factory cable would be no help here seeing as it's already in fastboot mode. You need to somehow get your Fire back to normal boot mode. To me it sounds like this is a driver related problem since KFU cannot find your device. Try looking into this. It has helped me in the past. You need to be running Ubuntu for this, but then you won't to deal with drivers.

I have tried using that with Ubuntu as well, but the computer still never recognizes the Kindle. I ordered the cable in case it helps, it should be here after Christmas. I will try out some more options in Ubuntu in the time being.
The stock bootloader has (presumably) been modified from it's original state and packaged with the 6.3.1 update. I stumbled across this anomaly during my work on the SoupKit.
Typically, with working drivers, the stock bootloader would report that a device is connected when it receives the "fastboot devices" command. Now, it doesn't...even on Linux. Another thing I noticed, is that when a fastboot command is sent, it sits at "waiting for device", indefinitely, or until the device is restarted by use of the hard shutdown. When the device starts up again, fastboot will detect it and send the command. Unfortunately, this only works for one command at a time and the device needs to be restarted again.
This all depends on whether the drivers are in working order, of course.
Windows can be very finicky when it comes to Android drivers so the best bet is to use Linux so as to eliminate as many variables as possible. Try sending the command and restarting the device. If it doesn't work, you know it's a driver issue. You can keep trying to fix your drivers in Windows or bite the bullet and go the Linux route. If you do decide to go the Linux route, SoupKit can make your life considerably easier (just choose an option and follow the instructions).
"That's a special kind of stupid. The kind that makes me laugh."
I think its been once again modified a little more as of recent there was a tiny update that I believe will have some affect.
I have tried a few of the options in FireKit on a Ubuntu LiveUSB Stick.
Same problem as ever though. Nothing ever gets past < waiting for device >.
My process is: enter the prompt in Terminal and get to the < waiting for device > step. Plug in the powered off Kindle Fire. The KF boots up into the splash logo.
After a few minutes the screen and power LED starts to turn on and off but nothing else ever happens.
I got a factory reset cable, but it does not seem to do anything.
I have also tried soupkit and firekit, both on a Ubuntu live USB.
Is there anything else I should try?

[Q] Kindle Fire bricked, have factory cable but can't boot recovery, please help!

Hi. I am really in a jam here. I have read a lot of documentation and still am not getting anywhere. I bought my sister a Kindle Fire for her birthday, and after reading the Kindle Fire for Beginner's Guide, I was able to successfully install Cyanogenmod 10.1 It was working fine, but I gave it some thought and decided she would be better off with the stock software, so I followed the instructions here to revert.
However, somewhere in that process I bricked the device. I went through the installing the Amazon software again in TWRP and told the device to reboot, but it is now stuck on the boot screen and will not respond to adb commands I send it.
I used the Kindle Fire Utility to install TWRP again, and it said it was successfully installed. I tried to boot into it through the Kindle Fire Utility menu, but it is still stuck.
It just so happens that I have a fastboot cable for this, so I plugged it in and tried to boot into recovery by issuing
C:\kfu\tools>fastboot oem idme bootmode 5001
It just says:
<waiting for device>
and nothing happens.
I don't know what else to do. I do think this factory cable put me in fastboot mode because the Windows device manager is showing "Android ADB Interface" (which according to Kindle Fire for Beginners is what it is supposed to say if the drivers are good and I am in fastboot mode), but I do not know how else to make use of this.
I am really stuck here, and I hope someone will take the time to help. My sister's birthday is in two days and I need to get this Kindle fixed and in the mail

<waiting for device>
and nothing happens.

First, welcome to Xda-developers
OK. So lets cover the basics.

^ Download and run that tool. Its very useful for un-bricking your Kindle
Once that is done, reboot into recovery and wipe every things. (sorry, we're going to start you from fresh start)
I'm going to suggest you try to install this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103278
The reason being that this one will give you the option to also wipe a few other places (including boot)
Now assuming you still want to keep with stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211872
This is basically the stock ROM by its rooted.

Thank you for your reply! I ran the Kindle Fire unbrick tool with the option "Stuck at logo," and it said "Congratulations, your Kindle should be unbricked. However, nothing had changed. So I ran it with the option "Other . . ." It said:
Code:
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
This part might take a while . . .
< waiting for device >
I have left it like that for ten minutes now and nothing is happening. Do you think it is working? I'll leave it alone for an hour or so I guess but I'm wondering.
BTW, for this I just used a regular USB cable and not the factory one. Is that right?
Thanks!

The unbrick program didn't work. It just stayed there t <waiting for device>. How can I use the fastboot cable to fix it?
Thanks.
I had the same problem before. It always says no device found. I tried different PC, finally in my XP PC it is detected and new ROM flashed in
Maybe you should try different PC

I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately I don't have another PC running Windows. All my others are running Linux, and I don't know how to get the drivers working.
I think I will borrow a laptop from a friend tomorrow and see if it works. It is my sister's 17th birthday today and her present is late!
In the meantime, though, does anyone know how I am supposed to use this fastboot cable? I have looked around and I see a lot of tutorials about how to unbrick without a fastboot cable, but none saying how to do it WITH one. I thought the cable was supposed to make it easier?
Thanks for the help.

First of all, Happy Birthday to your sister!
I think you may need install the firefirefire utility first to help you out of bootmode sucking. After you successfully reinstall the TWRP using unbrick utility, you need change the fastboot mode to normal boot, the firefirefire can help you choose,
here is the information may help you : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668159

I'd say you didn't read the previous posts.
Well, now the Kindle Fire is no longer being recognized by my computers. I borrowed another Windows computer like I said I would, but when I plug in the Kindle, the Device Manger does not even register it. Also, usually when I plug it in, the computer will realize I have plugged in a usb device and respond with that little pop up at the task bar, i.e. to let me know it sees a usb device and is trying to install driver, was not able to install drivers, or whatever. But now nothing. The computer doesn't even see it.
I have tried it on two different computers with three different cables and it's the same thing. I have restarted the computer and reinstalled the drivers over and over again and there is no difference. What is going on? It was seeing the Kindle fine before I tried the Unbricking Utility.

I'm assuming you know for sure this was a 1st Generation Kindle, right?
I had this problem once and basically formatted my computer. The driver was the issue and I couldn't uninstall it completely. Using my drivers solved this. I get the feeling you're still trying to use the drivers that came with the utility (don't they're often trouble)
However, assuming you are using the correct drivers (the ones I linked for you).... Boot into TWRP and wipe everything. Don't just use the general, click the advance options and wipe everything (selecting all options manually).
No connect your Kindle and don't worry about it not showing up yet....
Mount your SSD (should suddenly find your kindle) and upload this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211872
Now if you can't even load TWRP (when you turn on the Kindle, you'll need to hold the power button to bring up the menu, then quickly hit it a few times until its on recovery).... But if you can't load TWRP at all, its time to get a factory cable.
If you have a factory cable and still can't find the device (and assuming you're using the right drivers, on a fresh install) .... As someone else who knows how to do this. Because past that, all hope is lost.

Hi, My name i Jonah and i have a Kindle fire (5th generation) That came stock with Amazon's Fire OS Bellini 5.1.1. I tried to flash Cm12 with the app FlashFire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaCBSuUuhRE&spfreload=10) and during the installation i noticed it stopped for a while and didnt do anything. So i waited then 10 minutes later i decided to turn it off and turn it back on to fix it, when it started to boot up it showed the Cm logo just like as if it was running Cm12. So i waited, maybe 5 min at the most and it still would not turn on. So i turned it off, went online to see ho to get out of a bootloop. Rootjunky said to Turn your Kindle off and run ADB and Fastboot as a command from where you installed your drivers. Then he said he said to enter Recovery mode by pressing vol down and the power button. It is suppose'd to say Recovery-Mode in the corner but it just kept showing the Amazon logo. Im worried i screwed up and broke my new tablet, i can't return it because it's against Amazon's policy to root or mod any content of Amazon's, Plus ADB isn't working i can only access fastboot. I tried fixing it with the stock charger also but how do i know what kind of Android charger should i use?
