Screen protector necessary? - Nexus 5 Accessories

This thing has Gorilla Glass 3.
From what I have heard it's very hard to scratch. It's more likely you will break it then scratch it...
Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm still putting one on to avoid pocket scratches. My phones always wear protection.

have my N4 with no screen protector since launch, haven't seen any issues. Plan to do the same with N5. Of course, don't put your phone in the pocket with the keys/coins.

Well I got one spigen screen protector for my Nexus 5 from Amazon and really it makes me feel pretty much carefree about my N5....I know the screen is pretty good but still I cant take any risk over it...

i also had no problem with my nexus 4 without a screen protector so i will not put one on my N5... gorilla glas 3 should do the job good enough as it is better than glas 2 on the n4

couple grains of sand in your pocket or whatever and you're screwed. A bad screen protector can ruin the experience of the phone, but spigen ultra crystal has always been good looking to me. My thoughts are why take the chance, if you're not ruining your experience or whatever. I also like to keep my phones as close to mint for resale.

It depends on on several things. Mainly how you plan on using the phone. All it takes is one moment to throw your phone in your pocket with a set of keys and you "can" scratch it. Although very very hard to see, I did this day two with my iPhone 5S. The scratch was negligible, but still there. In a year of owning an iPhone 5 without a screen protector though. It was scratch free, same with 4S previously.
That said, back protector or case definitely. I can't do screen protectors though.

And me...my N4's only protection is the Google bumper...not a scratch on back or front.
My N7 has a Poetic Slimline Portfolio case and that has one big scratch at the top of the screen

Yeah my perspective is with both my SGN and N4 I used screen protectors (cheap ebay ones) and with my N4 I was very unsatisfied with the screen and when I took it off it was like I had a new phone again.
I've been so happy with no protector and I'm very good at keeping a dedicated pocket.
That said, maybe I'll try one of these spigen protectors, if it's as good as you say it might be worth the piece of mind.

After years of running eBay or Monoprice screen protectors, I tried the SPG Steinheil. AMAZING. Too bad they don't have the Nexus 5 one on Amazon yet. Until then, I'll be naked.

It's not the keys that scratch it, it's the pocket sand. Metal can't scratch glass, sand can.

Although not likely to happen again, after being thrown across a bar room when a cab crashed through the window next to where I was sitting, you should have seen what the screen on the gnex in my pocket looked like. I peeled off the protector and it was good as new. Too bad I didn't have one for my back.

Thanks for beating me to it. Every time a new phone or a new Gorilla Glass is released the same question pops up.

Guess I'm better off playing it safe.

Who actually uses screen protectors?

Just curious how many people on XDA that have the Captivate and actually use one. (If you do, post the name and what you think)
The Gorilla Glass seems pretty tough to scratch. Anyone have any scratches?
got three of them on ebay for $1.60. I like them... Some day when I take it off to sell it my screen will be PERECT, not "only a few small scratches" and bump the selling price up a few bucks.
its gorilla glass you're wasting your 1.60! doesnt scratch.
$1.60 is a small price to pay just for that little bit of extra insurance... And it is possible to scratch gorilla glass - I did it to my bricked captivate. Thats what happens when you absent mindedly slip your phone into the same pocket your keys are in

this is the stupidest post ive seen all day. it CAN scratch. you have been sold on a product that works really well to prevent scratches better than most.. but still its not perfect, i have slipped my captivate out of one pocket and into another that had a penny in it and it made one small but long scratch.
a screen protector would have easily prevented this from happening....
I just received 3 screen protectors for $1.57 from ebay today. Just put it on and it's barely noticeable other than a haze while the screen is off.
I got them because I'm afraid scratching my screen. (My screen already has several micro scratches that are only noticeable when light shines on it at odd angles.)
I got the matte body cover from phantomskinz, including a screen protector. I can't tell it's there, and it's really smooth (compared to invisibleSHIELD)
Plus the matte body looks really snazzy
Nice thanks for the info peeps!
I was looking into getting a case through casemate...
http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Cap...color=20&start=2&cgid=samsung-captivate-cases
And it turns out they give you a screen protector.
I use the ones available at the att stores. I am VERY picky when it comes to these things, this one is crystal clear, and difficult to tell its on there..
After a little practice ( I went through one package just practicing) I am now easily able to get it on without a single bubble or hair in the first try. Best $10 I've spent on a phone accessory.

Right! and the GPS works flawlessly too.. it actually scratches easier than I thought it would. Protectors are a wise investment imo.
it maybe be scratch resistant but not scratch proof. IMO its foolish to take any unnecessary risks damaging your screen.

You are right ANYTHING can be scratched. See here http://www.amfed.org/t_mohs.htm notice quartz (found in sand regularly found in a pocket) and glass are right at the same level....
I have tried SOOO many screen protectors over the years. From the cheepies you buy at the ATT store, to the really expensive full phone wraps. I HATE screen protectors like zagg, ghost armor, etc. Yes they cover your phone, but your phone is going to be ugly, and a pain to use. They are sticky, discolored, and textured... all bad things if you are trying not to notice your protector.
The best thing I have found is REALOOK. They are crystal clear, thin, and hard. It feels like glass, and looks like glass. They are $10 for 2 of them, and I have not even had to use my second skin. I put one on my GFs phone at night and she didnt even know for a week she had a screen protector, until I told her. I also heard the SteinHeil screenies are about the same quality, just more expensive.
I actually use a Zagg screen protector, I know a lot of people hate the orange peel look but I don't mind it, it's very smooth under my fingers.
I'm in the boat too where I just keep it on there just in case, and as a matter of fact, it fell in my car the other day, and hit the underside of one of my seats, put a pretty good gouge in my screen protector, i know it would have scratched it if I hadn't had something on.
all of us cappy owners know that it has gorilla glass, but better safe than sorry. I would rather know I have a 100% free of scratches original screen than some small little scuffs on it without one..
i put on a steinheil ultra crystal clear screen protector.. depending on installation (no air bubbles) you hardly even notice it is there unless you look closely at the edges..
matte screen protectors i truly loathe, because it distorts the image and makes it blurry on our superamoled screens.. absolute garbage..
I've found the screen protect that comes with all Outterbox cases to be very nice. I think it was the easiest to install. Also I've used Reallook on my wifes Cappy. It feel the same as the Outterbox but you really need to clean the crap out of the glass for it to work well. It's not as forgiving to get the bubbles smoothed out as the Outterbox one...
In any case make sure to use a good glass cleaner before installing one.

Agreed. It most certainly can be scratched. I have a scratch on mine. Barely noticeable, only at certain angles and in the light is that noticeable. My phone is still naked but I do plan on getting a case from Otterbox when I can.

Yet another scratch! What's generally considered the best screen protector?

This phone apparently has the most fragile screen of any phone I've ever used, and I've already gotten two deep scratches on it just from being in my pocket alone. I'm usually a huge fan of keeping the phone naked, but this is unacceptable. I'm willing to spend at least $20-$30 for a very good screen protector that will stay in place. What's the consensus?

That question will get you tons of differing opinions. Here's mine, lol.
The Skinomi is really good. I've had them on tons of phones throughout the years and I think they've gotten better. Never had them discolor. My first ones had some orange peel but the one I just installed on my S3 is REALLY nice. No peel. I'm very pleased.
Best part is it's $3 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0084F4HY8/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
For 3 bucks, you can't go wrong in trying. If you dont like get the more pricey options. Doubt you will.

It's almost as if Samsung used a subpar glass on some models. My wife ended up with a good scratch on her screen after a few days, and we have no clue where it came from, she had been super careful with it and never had anything else in the pocket with it. I am currently using a Zagg HD screen protector (honestly cannot tell any difference compared to their old protectors). I have considered trying out one of the glass protectors as I love the feel of the naked screen, the Zagg has the typical silicone screen protector feel to it, but I deal with it because I want my screen protected.
well the only scatch i have its a dot on my home key.
and plastic border,
so unless u put ur pants with a bunch of pointy nails , or sand. it shouldnt scratch that easily
I too have a zagg hd on now and do not like it. Seems to peel up on the sides a few times a week. So are the glass ones good to go? I had read some reviews......I believe it was droid-life that said that there were dots or grids in the finished product?

I bought a Skinomi when Amazon had it on sale for $0.99, and I can't recommend it.
CONS:
1) It's an annoying wet-application that takes a few days to dry, and for all major bubbles & imperfections to go away
2) Even after it dries, a few splotchy imperfections & minor orange peel will remain, but it's not visible with the screen on.
3) It feels RUBBERY. Compared to SGP's smooth ultra crystal, skinomi is just tacky as hell.
4) It peels up at the edges over time, especially with TPU cases, but not so much with hybrid cases.
5) Fairly thick: the home button is flush
PROS:
1) It's cheap-ish
2) It's nearly full-coverage
I guess the thing I hated most about it was the tacky friction feeling as I swiped my fingers, but after it built up a layer of grease, it got better (and after you cleaned it with microfiber, went back to tacky-as-hell). Just wasn't smooth-as-glass enough for my tastes, compared to SGP.
I'm currently using the new-version SGP Ultra Crystal... and my single gripe with it is that I know it's not supposed to be full-coverage, but, it could've been made a little wider. As-is, it's almost exactly as wide as the black part of the display, so you feel the edge sometimes.

Careful, a lot of people are having sensitivity problems.

Anyone got scratches on their screen WITHOUT protector?

Hey guys.
I bought around 4-5 cases for my HTC one so far. but in the end, NOTHING beats the HTC one naked in your hand, so i bought an invisibleshield protector for it .
But i dont like the screen protector. so im wondering, people using the phone with no screen protector, have you got any scratches on it? or does the Gorilla glass really work?
It works to a certain extent. Gorilla Glass is rated about 5-6H hardness. That will save you from most metals. Sand/stones will definitely scratch the glass as they can contain Quartz, which is 7H. Glas.t is rated for 8-9H so even those won't scratch it.
No scratches on mine so far. Like the poster above said, just watch out for certain sand/minerals cause they are hard enough to scratch the screen.
My last phone had GG as well, dont remember if it was 1 or 2, but it had a bunch of tiny scratches in one spot, turns out it was my earring (which is made of quartz) scratching it every time i used it.
So now I only answer my phone with my right hand lol, since my left ear is pierced.
I got mine about a month ago, and I still didnt get a screen protector..
no scratches yet..
I have a case but no screen protector. I'm not sure how but I have a very small scratch on my screen
Running naked for a couple of months. Not one single scratch. Most durable screen I have had on a phone.

Actually, keys cant scratch your screen. The metals they're made of are too soft compared to GG.
Its sand and rocks that will scratch up your phone if they ever find a way into your pockets. in other words.. better be careful at the beach.
They get into your pocket anyway, even some particals of dirt on flooring at hard enough to cause scratches. When I get my one ill probably get the glas screen protectors and take off after a month or 2

Keep your phone in its own pocket with nothing else in it and don't lay it face down and rub it all over **** and you'll be fine. I've had four android phones so far, never used a screen protector, and never got a scratch on any of them.

I'm not too sure as to how I got my scratches either but I do have two on the screen. I usually keep my phone in it's own pocket or at most it would be with my car key fob which shouldn't scratch it.. But otherwise I think it's just from normal use, maybe some sand or something. Thinking about jumping on the Glas.tr protector though.
It might well be alright without a protector; the glass is certainly quite resilient, and what others say is quite true-- short of sand, quartz, and other hard minerals, you're usually good to go. My problem is just that you never know when that kind of muck get get into your pocket, or onto a table, or anywhere. More importantly for me is keeping the screen clean from fingerprints and other gunk, so I picked up a matte screen protector just now and I am incredibly pleased with it.
I previously tried a Spiegen SGP UltraCrystal, but although it was unbelievably clear (indeed, many people who handled the phone were astonished to learn that there was a screen protector on the device at all), it picked up fingerprints like nobody's business. I was quite disappointed, especially after the huge success of my Armorsuit Militaryshield for my Galaxy Nexus. But matte is definitely the way to go.
Spigen makes a nice screen cover that's glass itself haven't tried it personally but about ready to.

Got a small scratch on the top right part of the screen. Noticed it after 6 days of use with a tpu case and no screen protector. But I don't like screen protectors, got myself a spigen leather flip case which protects the screen when I kept my phone in pocket. Looking for a spigen glast, as I can't get it right away from US.

It'll get stratches which CANT BE seen by naked eye, only when exposed to direct light. So if you are okay with it don't use protector.

[Q] Not using a screen protector

I always use a screen protector on my devices. I ordered one off amazon the same time I ordered my Nexus, but now it seems that the screen protector is not going to arrive at the same time. Will I be ok without a screen protector for a few days? I know it's gorilla glass and likely won't get a big noticeable scratch if I'm careful. What I'm worried about are the fine scratches that you can only see in direct light. Will my fingertips cause these scratches on Gorilla Glass 3?
P.S If anyone on here lives in New Mexico and happens to know a store that is selling screen protectors for the new Nexus 7 that would be great. None of the stores I have visited have any in stock.

Hey,
I used my N7 for a few days before my screen protector arrived. I can tell you that your screen will be fine. Assuming that you'll be careful with it.
-cliew
I've used mine for 10 days now completely naked. Not a single scratch on the screen. I've had it riding in my cars and in my pocket a few times now and I may not get a screen protector after all. So I think you'll be OK. Hope this helps =)
I have used my tablets naked since my first which was a rooted & ROM'd 1st gen NookColor. I have not scratched a single screen on any of them. I tried 'protectors' twice and in both cases tossed in garbage in under a week because they lowered sensitivity. But I also never leave my tablets laying around, if not in current I put them in their case or when in folios I close the folio.
When someone make a screen protector that will actually protect the screen from things like falls or a brick being dropped onto the screen I will give them another try.
I've had a naked LG Optimus G since it came out last year and not a scuff on it... I would say that the modern "glass" that is on these things is quite capable as long as you aren't wearing a ring that will scuff it up..

My local Best Buy store had them in stock when I picked up my FLO. Not cheap, but decent.
I used to have all kinds of protection on my devices. Nowadays I rock my Nexus 4 naked, except for when theres a high risk situation - e.g. Off to the woods or sailing. For this I usually use only a back protector or bumper.
My Nexus 7 still haven't got any protection, but I'm probably getting it a sleeve for travel or something resembling a 'smart cover'.
Anyway, the glass used in the latest devices is pretty sturdy, so it's not easy to scratch..

That's why I said New Mexico though. I've called every Best Buy in town and no one has any screen protectors.
Last time I used a screen protector on a device was the G1. I've never had scratches on my phones. My Note 2 is always in my pocket with keys, change, etc. My N7 will remain naked. I want nothing to distract from this beautiful screen.
The only real danger to scratching these screens is sand.
Seems the Nexus does not have Gorilla Glass but some other kind, just one notch below the much desirable Gorilla Glass...

zagg or not?

So Ive used zagg since I had an iPhone, a Galaxy S3 and now when I get the Nexus, I would like to apply a screen protector to that as well.

depending on how you carry your phone around i think your way more likely to shatter your screen then scratch it. I kept my s2 in my pocket and never had a screen protector. after 2 years the screen still has no scratches.

I am way more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, yes. Also it is very important to me to not feel anything on the screen and that the case will be as invisible as possible.

Mine will be arriving next week. I have always used them. I am sure there are cheaper alternatives but I have never had a problem and don't like change.

I couldn't find any pictures on their site, do they have cutouts for everything?
Dont get a Zagg, they almost always orangepeel and are overpriced. Check out Spigen screen protectors, they have some of the best screen protectors i have ever used. I got got one for my Nexus 5 and cant even tell there is on on my screen. You can get a 3 pack from them for less than 1 Zagg

The invisibleshield never had an orangepeel effect. I think that feel belongs to the older versions of Zagg.
Anyway, from my experience I went with Zagg. Just bought the screen protector. If I won't like it I can always ask for a refund, their customer service is amazing. Also, if anything peels off or the installation isn't going smooth they can always replace my screen protector for free.
If I won't like it I'll go with the glas.tr by spigen.
Thanks everyone.
I have a zagg invishield on day of purchase cracking protected action and covers well. I applied and left the phone for 24 hours . I have some spigen too and there now just sat in the box lol.

Why not just get a screen protector from xtremeguard for under $2
I cannot stand the sticky/gummy feel of Zaggs. For that type of protection, I go with Clearplex. Right now, I have a not-quite-faulty Spigen glas.TR on mine while I wait on the replacement Nano glas to come in.
Never really like Zagg, there more pro apple imo. But thats not the reason I dont like them...I hate the orange peal looking and sticky texture I get from there screen protectors!
Ordered a Zagg. They have always done fine by me.

There are cutouts in the picture for the speaker, prox sensor. Although rumor has it that the 3 pack on amazon by Spigen for $15 its just like a flat deal with no cutouts and works fine. Go with what you trust and what you think is right and will work for you.
I don't like Zagg. I used Invisishield on a lumia800 and it had horrendous amounts of orange peel. Also, I was not a fan of the feel because it didn't feel smooth. They are not very forgiving if you are not good at applying them correctly the first time. I RMA'd one because it got some scratch on it and while they did send me the replacement, they said they never received my original protector and charged me the amount for a new invisishield. It's their fault for not providing me with a tracking number on their return packaging that it got lost. I've used dry application screen protectors since and they are visually better looking as well as they feel better.
I find Zaggs texture to be... Weird. I'd go for Skinomi. Smooth and doesn't have the orange peel effect that most wet application screen protectors have

I got Spigen Protector Steinheil. My first time using. Cheap and I'm more than happy with it

If I play games on my phone, I can't use a Zagg. The sticky gummieness doesn't let my finger slide on the screen, it's tries to skip across instead.
Zagg is garbage in my opinion. I never had one I kept on more than a few days. I in general don't like screen protectors. If I did use one though the only company I liked was clear-coat.

My only complaint about zagg (and most wet application screen protectors) is that over time, if you were jeans, the screen protector will turn blue. It's easier to notice on a phone with a white front, but it sucks to know that it's happening nevertheless. Be prepared for that if you plan to invest in one of these.
