Open source files for xperia M - Sony Xperia M

It’s a rather affectionate title that Sony’s been given for the past few months, particularly for their leading track record in GPL compliance as displayed on multiple occasions. So to make sure that they’re continuing their fairly extraordinary performance, they’ve just released the open source files for the Xperia M..
i think this may become helpful for the devs to make new roms

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been around for quite some time now. Even the date on the site says August eighth

Yes it's been out for months and I posted it months ago in the topic I created before this forum existed

yeah its posted in august ... just wanted it to be in this forum:good:

HTC dragging their feet??

Hasn't it been a month since the 2.3.3 update? Where's the kernel source code? I know I'm impatient, I'm just dying for a custom kernel... Has anyone heard anything about when it will be released or how they can hold onto it for more than a month? I just thought that was one of the binding open source deals... Thanks

Yes and root FWIW. My girl just got a brand new one and it came that way.
Sent from my world viewed in 3D with my Evo.
Just wait, it will come...
I bought my Evo 4G with 2.2. and my dumb ass hit the OTA update button and guess what?
I'm now playing the waiting game like the rest of the people stuck with an unrooted 2.3.3 phone...
He's talking about kernal source code not root u guys. By law HTC had to release this code one month after official release.

1+ true, perhaps they haven't released it because they know once they do..the phone will get rooted and bootloader might get unlocked?

I appreciate your interest in the kernel source code for the software upgrade to Gingerbread for the HTC EVO 4G. We will typicallypublish theKernel open source code on http://developer.htc.com for recently released devices as soon as possible. HTC will normally publish this within 90 to 120 days. This time frame is within the requirements of the open source community.
If you feel you need more information about this issue, you are welcome to send us another email for further troubleshooting or you can contact the HTC Technical Support team at 1-866-449-8358 daily from 6:00AM until 1:00AM eastern.
First off, I know of no requirement that they have to release the source within 30 days. I would personally be surprised if they released the source anytime soon, as it obviously has some serious bugs right now. Just guessing, but it wouldn't surprise me if we don't see the source released until after we get another update that fixes all or most of these problems.

GPL v3 gives a 30 day grace period for the release of source upon written request. History has shown HTC is notorious for violating this.
HTC said:
Dear xxxxxxxxxx,
I understand the importance of having the source code for the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update for the HTC EVO 4G. I have located the GPL version 2 here: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
What I beleive that you are refferencing is Section 3, Subpart A of the Terms and Conditions of the GPL version 2 license. This states that one of the options when distributing a Program is to include a copy of the Source code. I.E. to include a copy of the source code with "the complete corresponding machine-readable source code" e.g. phone.
HTC has chosen instead to go with option (Subpart) B of Section 3. This states that we can "Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange."
This again, does not include any terms or conditions that require us to immediately release the source code. It clearly indicates the that the offer must be valid for up to three years and that we must "give" a copy to "any third party." It does not say that the source code must be given immediately upon request from said third party.
Section 3 of the Terms and Condtions also states that "If distribution of executable or object code is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, then offering equivalent access to copy the source code from the same place counts as distribution of the source code, even though third parties are not compelled to copy the source along with the object code. "
This is again the method that we are chosing to supply the source code in. This part of the license clearly states that this distribution can be "made." HTC is currently in the process of making said distribution; that is to say writing and formating the source code (kernal) in such a way as to make it readily and easily (as is a requirement of the license) accessible from our developer website.
We are not choosing to not supply you with the source code. We are simply unable to provide it to you at this time as it is not currently in an easily accessible format.
If you beleive that the GPL entitles you to receive the source code immediately upon request, as opposed to the first available oportunity at the best of our abilities, please provide a quotation of the actual license that states that the source code must be provided immediately upon request and not just "given."
When the code is available, you will be able find it at http://developer.htc.com. I do apologize for any incovnenience.

Dear xxxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for your response.
Please also keep in mind that the software is also under the Apache license. You can read more about why Google choose the Apache License instead of GPLv2 on the following website: http://developer.android.com/resources/faq/licensingandoss.html.
Also, I would like to escalate your issue so that you may receive a call regarding this matter. In order to do this, I will need to know a Contact number that you can be reached at, a time that you can be reached and the time zone you are currently in. I would also like to know the IMEI number of your device. This can be found by going to Home>Menu>Settings>About>Phone Identity. Once I have this information, I will be glad to send it up so that you can receive a call.

XDA Devs Working With The Manufacturer Devs?

To whom it may concern...
After this announcement from Sony Ericsson...
In developer forums worldwide, there is a huge activity and engagement in the open Android™ ecosystem. And we also know there are a lot of independent developers out there who are creating their own custom ROMs or modifying the kernel. The Sony Ericsson Developer program is following this community with great interest, and even though Sony Ericsson is not supporting all the activities by independent developers, we recognize that custom ROMs are a part of the Android ecosystem.
We therefore decided to assist a group of developers called “FreeXperia”. The overall open developer community is important to Sony Ericsson, and we hope to learn from it, and share knowledge ourselves. The FreeXperia group was supported with devices and technical know-how, and they are now in the process of creating custom ROMs based on the CyanogenMod for several of our latest Xperia™ phones, including Xperia™ PLAY and Xperia™ arc.
Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations, explains more after the jump.

- Sony Ericsson supports independent developers
...could this be an opportunity for XDA to contact the big names such as S.E, HTC, Samsung etc to see if it would be possible to work with them in one way or another because lets face it, the greatest developers in the World are here at XDA. One thought that sprung to mind was that they would be able to donate handsets for the Recognized Developers here to work with, or maybe release Special Edition Roms for XDA members that give built in options for things like Rooting and Boot Loader unlocking, CyanogenMod, etc etc etc.
Those are things most Android users want as standard from what I've seen in the Arc & X10 forum, and given how much better the Devs here at XDA can make a device, in the interests of progression for the Mobile industry in general it could be a revolutionary step.
Interesting Thought, but this announcement probably won't mean that Sony will be partnering with XDA tomorrow.
There is a lot of legal, and corporate bull to weed through. Are the owners of XDA doing something like this? IMHO more than likely, but we won't know about it until its final and ready to happen.
Would like to see more companies jump on board with similar things.
First of all, don't confuse S-E's attempt to get some free PR to prop up their flagging sales, with a genuine interest at working together with hobby-developers.
Secondly, you're sorely mistaken if, as skillful as the devs here are, you really think that "the greatest developers in the world are at XDA" or that they can ever replace the professional coders and programmers that make the ROMs for HTC, Samsung, et al.
There's a big difference between the ROMs that hobby-developers produce for enthusiasts here on XDA, enthusiasts who are willing to live with occasional FCs and performance issues, and the ROMS that go into devices that have to approved and used by hundreds of carriers.
Don't forget that when developers from XDA occasionally pull something off that the manufacturers either couldn't or wouldn't do, it's because they use tricks and methods that could never be accepted on a production-ROM.
(For example: use of ext3 or ext4 file systems, cache2SD and many others)

No doubt, but that's the point, most people join XDA for a reason, mine was to debrand and change as much of the stock FW as possible regardless of the risks, and I'd prefer the manufacturers to be a little more interested in what I want rather than what the carriers assume I want. I've only had the Xperia X10 and now the Xperia Arc while I've been a member here, and having seen how far the FreeXperia team has come, and having just read this...
Well apparently the hard work and passion shown by the dedicated FreeXperia team caught the attention of Sony Ericsson. They have worked hard to assist the team in making a CyanogenMod custom ROM for the Xperia range of smartphones. Sony Ericsson has given around 20 handsets to the team and even provided “debugged and rebuilt camera library binaries”. These libraries will made available to all under a special EULA license shortly to further assist developers.

This is why I mentioned Special Edition type Roms, which could just be released on XDA for example, or at least release source code for whatever which helps to unlock the true potential of our devices. Maybe I also put too much weight in XDA's presence in the mobile World.

Xperia Ion due in June for AT&T!?

So I have been checking the web constantly for the Ion release date. Though I have yet to find something concrete, something caught my eye yesterday. I did a google search for Xperia Ion and when the description came up for Sony's website, it said "Coming in June only from AT&T." Well I did the same search this morning so I could take a screen shot of what I saw and now the description says, "Coming Soon only from AT&T." I bet what I saw was accidentally put in the meta description then taken down. Hope this is correct. I'm due for upgrade in June and I really want the Ion. The One X is my second choice, but I really want that HDMI out!
Hope someone here has some inside information.
I figured out if you continuously hit refresh, the ad description updates. Here's the screenshot.

S3 CPU and Gingerbread? No thanks. Sony should at least have had an.S4 to appeal better vs phones like the One X and SGS3. Average consumer will prolly be swayed my the mp count but still, it should have been better overall

I disagree, partially. I really wished Sony would learn from previous experience and wouldn't be late to the quadcore party or at least come up with a 2012 SoC during 2012, but in the other hand some people will prefer the design and camera over other ubiquitous phones by other manufacturers.
Glad to see someone out there cares about this phone. I honestly expect the 4.0 update to be ready within a month of the release of the phone. I can't stand touchwiz or sense. I'm using a captivate atm. I immediately flashed a rom to get rid of touchwiz. I however have my x10 running wolf breaks tweaked stock 2.3 rom because I actually like the Sony UI. Besides, no phone on the market will have a camera comparable to the ion. 1.5ghz dual core seems like plenty of fire power for me. My captivate is smooth with ICS and a single core, don't see how the Sony won't do just as well, especially after the ICS update. The One X is my backup plan, but I really want that ION!

I wouldn't recommend HTC, their build quality and service are not comparable to Samsung, Apple or Sony.
Sammy always has the hottest hardware but their phones look plasticky and Touchwiz is not my taste. Matter of personal choices.
I'm currently using the Arc with ICS update.
Wow. That phone almost makes me want to go back to AT&T. GBs not that big of a deal, hopefully devs will jump on that phone pretty quickly and get some custom ROMs going...

Hi Orb3000, nice to see you again
You must reconsider your decission because the OP is NOT a question but a statement. The guy found an interesting slip in google advertising system which confirmed a June release date for the aforementioned phone.
Whatsmore, many recognized tech blogs acknowledged his finding and published notes about it, some even linking here to xda-devs as the source of the finding.
Just got my Xperia Ion! Here's a couple of photos next to my Xperia S, along with the Antutu benchmark!
Where did you get it from?
I'm hoping they announce it's release on AT&T very soon!

crazy
It's amazing to me how little AT&T is pushing this phone. You go to the AT&T website and you have to dig to find it (whereas the one x and the sgIII are on the front page). I understand those are higher end devices, but it seems as if AT&T doesn't really care at all about what is a pretty decent phone. Even when I walked into the AT&T store, they looked at me like I was crazy for asking for the ion (maybe they forgot how to sell anything other than iphones....)

The phone is finally visible on the site, I find it interesting..I emailed Sony about that and a few hours later the phone magically appeared!
I ordered my phone online through the website the day it was released (like you said had to dig through the search bar to find it). Unfortunately I was unable to upgrade from my end so I had to call 611.
At&t must not have told many people about its roll out because the rep who helped me had no clue that this phone existed but had no problem searching it himself and ordering it on his end. I emphasize this because he flat out told me he keeps up with all the employee updates and me asking about the phone was the first he ever heard of it.
Long story short he ordered the phone for himself and expressed my order so we both can baste in its awesomeness asap!

Multiple Nexus Devices

I apologize for not quoting sources, as I read far too many stories daily using Pulse, but before today, I can recall hearing about a new nexus device rumor story almost bi-weekly across the internet from nearly every major manufacturer ranging from HTC, Samsung (gnex2), Motorola, LG, and possibly more.
My question: Do you think this will be the year that manufacturers across the board begin to all release a variant Nexus device with vanilla Android (see: SGIII Developer Edition) to please the development community? This would've sounded far-fetched possibly even three months ago, but my fellow tech-news addicts will hopefully weigh in and source me here.
What do you think?

I apologize if that is the case, as only a quick search didn't turn up much for me. (Maybe I'm just not searching the right terms for this topic) I've trolled xda for a while now and prayed I wouldn't make my entrance making "one of those" posts, but alas, we all begin somewhere.

I emailed Sony...

Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia Support.
With regards to your inquiry, we are happy to inform you that our company is planning a maintenance release of the Jelly Bean firmware for a number of the 2012 smartphones. Our priority has and always will be, to deliver the best possible smartphone experience – this means accounting for hardware, functionality and stability alongside Android version development.
The Android 4.1 rollout schedule for 2012 Xperia smartphones is planned as follows:
- Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V will start to receive Jelly Bean during February and March
- Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia go from the end of March and
- Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S end of May.
2012 Xperia smartphones differ in platform and capability, so each rollout is phased as we deliver hundreds of custom software variants for different smartphones and operator partners. Working closely with our partners, we need this time to ensure the software meets our, our partners’, customers’ and consumers’ expectations. We release the software variants as soon as they are approved.

I send them in past 9 months 3-4 mails, none of them were reply.
