[Q] SGH-I467 boot up problem - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

When I boot up my SGH-I467 (Galaxy Note 8 AT&T LTE) it nearly always displays a screen that looks as though its damaged – just horizontal coloured lines or blocks of colour across the screen with no hint of any image. It only boots up correctly about 1 time in 20 or 30. Once it does boot up correctly everything works fine and there’s no hint of anything wrong with the screen itself. It’s also OK if I just turn the screen off between sessions. However, after recharging the tablet the problem recurs when I switch on. Its on firmware version 4.1.2 which appears to be the latest available for this AT&T version. Any ideas on what's happening and a fix?

I'm very disappointed that my post has had 118 views but no replies so I've added two photos of the screen showing what usually happens when I boot up. Note that about 1 time in 20 or 30 it boots up fine and operates perfectly in every respect and I've then been able to use it for hours continuously without any problem whatever.
Does any one know whether this is likely to be a screen/digitizer problem or something else?

I have never seen this and I have the same model. It sounds like whatever it is, you should be able to take it in for warranty service.

I'd say probably the screen and not the digitizer

Thanks for comments. Although its only about 3 months old it was a gift from the US and I live in UK so warranty service probably isn't an option.

There's a post in this forum about screen replacement and I think that he does them as well. If you can't find a solution, then it may be the best way to go. Also, try asking Samsung themselves. If you explain the situation, they might be able to help you.

I'm hesitant in attributing this to a screen problem. I normally swich off the device between sessions of use but then have the problem booting up to a good screen. However, I thought it would be easier just to leave it running and the screen has perfomed fne for the last 72 hours with me just fully dimming screen between sessions of using the tablet. Is there anything else that might cause this?

The only things that i could think to suggest would be
1) Have you tried wiping the cache?
2) Have you tried a factory reset?
I'm no expert, but if it were my device I would try both of these before sending the device in for warranty service.
Not saying either is a sure fix, but thats what I would do.

Sorry for long delay in responding to your suggestions. I'd already tried a factory resent but not wiping the cache. I did both of these after your suggestion but no change to the fault.

[Q] Strange screen behavior

Sometimes the screen of my Galaxy Nexus freaks out; it behaves as if I'm touching the screen repeatedly while I'm not. It does not happen a lot, but I think it mostly occurs after pulling down the notification menu and touching a notification message there.
I have tried to reproduce this behavior (camera ready so I can video the screen of my GN), so far no luck. Anybody else experienced this?
Of course, as soon as I'm in bed and have put my camera away I experienced the issue again.
Will try again this evening.
That really sounds like a faulty screen I'm sorry to say. I had a similar issue with my HD2 two years ago, had to send it for replacement.
Hmmm I hope not. Since it's very hard to reproduce I doubt I can prove it in order to get a replacement.
It happens to me only when I'm charging the device. Do you use custom ROM? I'm suspecting that right now.
Nope, stock rom. I haven't even rooted it yet.
Finally caught it on video! It's not very focused but it clearly shows my problem.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5_tUcosrtQ&feature=youtu.be
I don't think its a hardware problem because I'm mostly experiencing this problem at home. Today at work I used the phone the whole day without encountering this behavior. I'm 15 minutes home and the problem pops up again. Difference? At home the phone is connected to my WiFi. Any thoughts?
Does it happen when you're not holding the phone? I've had anomalies happen before when the phone is on table and not in my hand before. Or could be faulty driver for touchscreen chip.

No, it does not happen spontaneously. I happens when I'm using the phone.
I've read some threads for other devices concerning exact the same issue. There were opinions that it could be due to the static charge that gathers on the sensor.
Possible solution could be:
1) discharge the phone
2) remove the battery and wait for about 10-12 hours.
Try it may be it ill help you.

[Q] Odd brick situation Tmobile SGH-T999 (Cant find exact answer)

Hey everybody,
I rooted my phone a couple weeks ago and one day it just pooped out. I researched a bunch on google etc and found some things to try but so far no solutions.
Model: SGH-T999 T-mobile s3 (Used CF-Auto-Root and Odin for rooting)
Problem: After the phone pooped out, I was unable to enter recovery mode. I could enter dl mode however it crashes at variable intervals. So I bought a jig figuring maybe that would help but it still crashes in dl about 5 seconds later. Any suggestions?
Everything that I have found on the internet has been were people can usually get it into dl mode and keep it there or they cant get there at all even with a jig. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
If you were running stock it's probably a hardware problem. If not what Rom are you on? What/when/how was your most recent flashes?
Have you tried kAsp3rd's brick fix in dev section?

I just tried the kasperd brick fix and it didnt work. It still crashes at variable times and I cannot get it into download mode long enough to do anything. I tried a jig and it also still crashes. Any help would be great. Thanks!

It starts and then crashes. After awhile it might make it to the animation with the blue wave forming around the words samsung, but usually it crashes on the Samsung Galaxy SIII logo in the beginning. Also when I put it into download mode it crashes anywhere from 1-5 seconds after. When I try to get into recovery mode it crashes almost right away when the blue words are at the top left of the screen.
Also when I put the battery in it tries to boot on its own without me pressing power button, and sometimes it tries to reboot after it crashes and turns off without me pressing anything. Also after it crashes I usually cannot just press the power button to try and power it up again so I have to take the battery out and put it back in.
When I was doing the Kasperd brick fix I used the T999 debrick image. How do I know if I have a different variant of the T999. I saw that some people had T999v and T999N. What are those?
Look under the battery for your model. Sounds like a power button issue. All I can say is try fiddling with it a bit. May have to open to see if it is physically always in contact, or it could be a deeper issue on the board. Hard to say.

Ok I just see T999 on the label.
How can it be a hardware issue when I never dropped the phone or anything. I was just thinking it was because I rooted the phone because it happened about a week after I rooted it. It was working one minute and then a couple hours later when I took it out of my pocket it was off and I tried turning it on and all that stuff started happening. I will definitely check the power button though. Thanks for the help.
Also another piece of info to add. When I plug it in to charge both the battery charging symbol and red light will sometimes turn on and then it crashes/goes black similar to what happens when trying to power up the phone. Not sure if that helps at all. Thanks!
If my phone was hard bricked I wouldnt be able to turn it on at all correct? Im trying to figure out if I will need to get this thing jtagged or something in order to get it working again.

Physical damage is not a prerequisite of hardware failure. Ever have a hard drive go bad? Did you drop it first?

True, however I just find it odd that I rooted the phone and a week later it happened. That is why I am leading towards an issue involving that and not hardware damage.
If it was a problem with rooting, it would have gone south right away. Many people are having these button issues recently. And you don't have to drop it, like aerowinder said, but you do use the button right? Moving parts wear out. Hardware fails. That's really all there is to it. While I could be wrong in my diagnosis, I don't think that will prove to be the case here.

It does most certainly sound like a hardware issue in the power button. I read another thread very similar to this same thing on the T999.

I took the back casing off to see if the button is getting stuck or anything, but all the mechanics look normal.

Thanks guys! I found a good thread on here about the S3 sudden death thread. Im going to read up on that and see what I can do. It was just tough to find since I was thinking it was bricked but the descriptions for this power button sudden death thing sound spot on. Hopefully I will be able to get everything back in working order.

[Q] Brand New Note 3 problem

Hi guys, I have a weird problem and I need your advice.
My brand new galaxy Note 3 Sm-N900T is having screen blackouts....
Its like after the screen timeout the screen goes off and then when I press the power button it doesn't go back on again.
Or if I turn the screen off it doesn't go back on again... the buttons are working the sounds are on, I can answer calls and everything but the screen is black.
If I play with it (pressing power or home buttons) for a while it comes back on. Sometimes the phone restarts (rarely, I think because i press power button).
I have tried everything from playing with settings to wiping the cache and resetting the phone few times.
It looks like its a software issue to me, or maybe sensor.. but i think that when power button is pressed the screen should turn on regardless of sensors.
I do have the custom S-Case but I had the issue even before I got that.
Now.. I have few choices :
1. Go to t-Mobile and get a replacement.. probably refurbished, not a fact that the problem will away because I heard of lots of people having this issue ...
I of course do not want to do that.. I have this phone for less than a month.
2. Wait for KitKat....
3. install some kind of custom rom and see if problem goes away.
If anyone can help, Id really appreciate it.
I would do an exchange.. you paid good money for it and a defect is a defect, I wouldn't depend on a 3rd party patch for this

sucks man.
I know on my htc onei have the purple camera problem but everything else was fine. they had to send me 2 replacements because the first one had a yellow screen and worse camera then mines.
Tmobile doesnt even check there replacement. Most of the time there phones that people traded in. And all they do with those is a power on check.
Now if you just got the phone and within the 14 exchange you can take it to the store and get a brand new one.
Had it for more than 2 weeks now.. since i was always playing with it i did not notice the problem .. (the screen was always on).
I called Samsung and Tmobile. I told tmobile that samsung said i have a defective phone. so Tmobile is sending me a "Like new" phone meaning that someone returned it within 14 days. I get to check it and if i dont like it i will just send them their phone back. and suddenly mine doesnt do the problem for 30 minutes lol.. maybe it got scared. Personally i think that KitKat would fix it.
Any force closes? I had this problem too untill I stopped using the crapy My Magazine bloatware, which was also sometimes force closing...
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
No, no force closes, but one time it was funny, a little bit of status bar appeared from the bottom and on top it was a little bit cutoff.... like someone slid the screen up few pixels.
And whatever was cut just came from the bottom. Its weird... for $700 phone it should be flawless... I hope they dont send me crap phone and i hope they dont send my phone to someone else.
How can i get rid of it to see if that was the problem?

I figured id try to reflash (not data reset, but reflash via Kies) so far so good no problem.
The whole thing looks like soft prob, not hard.
If it comes back Ill let you know. This could be a nice fix if works.
I'm in nyc, and my local store called the warrenty center and got me a brand new SGS2 one time. It still had all the blue plastic in the sim card and sd card slots, and plastic on the screen. So I'm know they can request it, just depends on your store if they are willing.

My sgs2 had problems out of the box. After I installed custom ROM they went away. It does happen. Restored stock via Odin, still no problems. Sometimes the software doesn't flash correctly from the manufacturer.

Well, I dont know what to think anymore... Looks like the problem persists but happens so rare that without the past I wouldnt notice it.
This makes me believe that with KitKat it will probably disappear. If soft changes cause this to go away or be less it means (to me) that the phone is not defective. New phone is still on the way, to bad I did not purchase it at local store... I did it online, so there is no one to yell at.
It will arrive on Feb 6th so I have plenty of time to test my phone, with some luck KitKat will roll out during this time and then I will be able to definitely see. And if new phone is cool I have the option of exchange anyway .
Thank you all for your help, keep posting, its an interesting issue.
:/
Phone went worse and worse everyday ... now the S-Pen "Air Command" doesnt pop up, several weird disfunctions...
Waiting for the replacement.

Random (and ghostly) touches on screen

Hi guys!
I have a F180L (converted on a E975), my phone never fell from any distance, or had any kind of impact, BUT...Since I updated to last version o Carbom ROM, I've got a issue on my screen...
There are random touches on my down-left corner of the screen. It's completely random, while the charger is plugged, or not. But it only happens when an app is opened, while in homescreen (even on google now cards) everything is ok...
I've already flashed another rom, the AOKP Android L release 11, the problem still here...I installed a screen tester app, and this corner is not recognizing when I touch.
What can I do? Is there any kind of fix for it?
It's really annoying (mainly while typing)...
Thank you for any help!
I guess its time for a replacement.
Made some research on other forums and found some people with the same problem, but on other devices...On Nexus 4 and Xioami (mostly)...They solved this by replacing the battery...I'll try to do that this week...
But any other tip about can help...
it might be a kernel issue
if u have jolla kernel try changing the kernel first
I have also the ghost touching on my E975.
Tried to do a scan with antivirus with no luck.
For instance it's hard to dial number, because there are ghost touches often.
It's like on tihs video, but I have touches even more often:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHFtafL-HKc
I'm on stock KitKat 4.4.2 ROM.
Any ideas about the issue?

Thanks.
It's relatively common issue, hope it will not appear again...
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I seem to have a problem with my screen, not with the ghostly touches but my screen has like one part of it not responsive to touches especially the keyboard. While typing in portrait mode I can't type in the letters x and d and the whole line of the screen above those letters can't respond to my touches. The others are OK though. Anyone else having the same problem or is it just me? Already flashed different ROMs but same problem
So...I didn't manage to get a new battery to perform a test yet...Maybe I'll do that until the end of this week, and post the results here...
About the kernel...Mine is "3.4.0 [email protected]" ...
Going to update to new Kevin's L ROM and see what will happen...Hope I can help u, guys...
I had the same problem as well, unfortunately my phone was just out of the warranty period so I couldn't get a repair or replacement. I tried everything to do with the software and firmware at first to see if that was the issue(no luck). I noticed when my phone was either hot from heavy usage or charging, it was at its worst..couldn't even put my lock pattern in without it spazzing out. After almost throwing my phone at a wall numerous times I decided to get a new digitizer (easily bought online at reasonable prices). Watched a tutorial on Youtube and replaced it successfully and haven't had a problem since.

Yeah no problem and thats unlucky. I've got the Korean variant and wasn't ready to wait weeks to get my new digitizer either from Asia. I managed to find a european version that arrived next day and included front housing aswell (although modifications were needed a bit for the internals to fit). Yeah the Moto G look great but it seems to be more of a downgrade from your current handset right?

I live in the UK I managed to find one here on ebay. I know you can get some from Italy , Spain and I'm positive there some in US aswell. Search "E975 housing or digitizer" depending on what your after. Do be careful as some replacements screens lack the LG logo or a bad quality. Im would give direct link but im not sure about the forum rules on that are. If your still unsure do PM me your country and I'll PM you back an appropriate link.

Phone becoming increasingly unresponsive?

Hi. I have a genuine AT&T note 4 that I got when it was released, ergo it's fairly old. Ever since a few days ago, the phone has been slow to open things, freezing for a few seconds before responding trying to do just about anything. When it "freezes" after I attempt to do something (like open an app, swipe a page, use keyboard, turn off wifi, etc etc) absolutely nothing responds; the 2 buttons on the front, the power button to turn the screen off, nothing. The time that it stays frozen has increased, and now it might stay frozen so long i just take the battery out.
The oddest thing about this to me is that the phone will function normally, too; it still functions fast and responsively 50% of the time, it doesn't freeze every time i try to open something, for example. There seems 0 pattern to it. I've already tried a factory reset, helped a little at first and now seems the same again.
What do I do? What's wrong with it?
If it's still under warranty get it replaced. Mine did the same last month and was able to get a replacement through my Square Trade warranty service. Resetting the phone didn't help with issue either and that's ATT Best Buy, Samsung will recommend doing 1st.

Try a factory reset. I had issues similar to yours and it definitely helped. Be sure to back your data up before hand.
Seams like bad nand flash. I had same issue with my nexus 7 2012. That thing has so many annoying issues that i sold it eventually. Try resetting and cache clear and do not install any 3rd part app for few days. If it stays smooth and fast then its app issue not the nand issue. If starts to behave as expected stuck 50? of time then it is definitely nand issue only hardware fix (replacement will fix it).
If you are a curious type like me you should try odin. It will reset every thing of your device and probably fix any known software issue (flashing has risk u may brick your device)

I am afraid I have only bad news, I myself did a odin flash oday twice and it went through without a hitch. It seams like odin failed to write to a partition hence failed the over all process. My previous statement is valid. Your phones nand memory is at its last breath. If u cant affort to replace your phone then try getting it repaired. A motherboard replacement sbould fix the issue. Ebay search can belp you with that and. Ite 4 is an old device so replacement should be faily easy to find.
