[Q] Questions about flashing to HTC One V (noob) - Paranoid Android Q&A

Hello!
I have an HTC one V, with Ice cream sandwich. I am wanting to flash jellybean to it. I have a few questions though.
If I root my phone and then flash jellybean to it, will I have to re-activate my phone? I am using virgin mobile prepaid plan. If so, how do I do this?
Also, will performance go down after flashing the custom rom? Will my phone be slower, and glitchy?
And will my apps and pictures on my SD card be saved?
Thanks everyone!

root or not

Hi everyone,
i know this topic is discussed allot but i would like to clear this out
I would like to ask a couple of questions .
I'm new to this ,bought me a htc one x.
douwding if i should root or not.
after root are there problems with sim card or connectivity?
applying custom rom would there also be connectivity problems?
can't accept anymore updates after root (OTA) (brick phone or bootloop, right )?
with latest custom roms ,how much would battery life increase (not talking about roms for overclocking)?
stock rom = integrated rom when you bought htc one x ?
when you unroot the htc one x is warranty back in place?
do you always need to clear all the data before you install custom rom?
sorry about all the questions
Thanks

Root and updates
That's a little more than a couple of questions no?
I'll try to answer some of them, hopefully right.
Official Updates
What I found with the HTC Sensation Root, is that it won't affect your updates IF you install the custom recovery back to the device. I believe the same might be true with the HTC One X.
If you stay with other recovery (like clockworkmod) the update won't work.
Connectivity
I don't believe you'll get any serious connectivity problems if you don't change radios.
Stock Rom = The original HTC One X Rom
But be careful, since there will be many different versions of HTC One X's out there, therefore there will be many different stock roms.
Clear data before installing
Mandatory, no. Recommended, Yes.

I haven't experienced any problems. I even have GPS improvements with custom roms . Sim card works fine. So does contacts synchronizing with Google. (GPS fix)

When you're on a custom ROM, you don't receive OTA updates. I suggest if you root your phone, make a Nandroid backup with clockworkmod recovery before flashing a custom ROM. (There a lot of tutorials out there)

That depends on what custom ROM you're going to use. I just got 1.28 firmware pushed to my phone. I restored a Nandroid backup of stock ROM, then downloaded the 1.28 update. I deleted the hboot update and recovery from it and installed it. I then flashed Android Revolution HD over it. 1.28 is the official HTC battery and screen fix update. But almost every custom ROM here based on 1.26 has the fix build in by the developer. So no worries about that. I read when you have configured a HTC Sense account. It will start some background processes every time you boot and those drain battery life.

Yup. You can also download stock ROMs. (read on the development section)

If you undo everything: Yes. That means relock the bootloader again and flash the stock ROM back. Delete every trace that you rooted your device. Don't forget to flash stock recovery.

I only clear data if I get unexpected problems with the ROM not mentioned in the thread. But if you go from cyanogen mod or some other AOSP rom to a sense or touchwiz rom, or vice versa do clear data.

Root is just a change in permissions, allowing you access to system files. It doesn't change anything in the system itself. There should be no change in connectivity.

Depends on the ROM, what base was used, and what was changed. Stick to ROMs that are used by a good number of others, and proven to be reliable, and you should be fine.

You may lose root, and true (depending on what was updated) you may be stuck in a bootloop. Simple rule, if rooted, don't install OTA's or any other "official" updates. Rooted, safe versions to flash are almost always get posted here, and quickly.

Again, this depends on what was changed in the ROM. And even so, results tend to vary from user to user. No easy answer to this question.

If you are updating to a new version of the same custom ROM, you usually fine keeping data (but check the instructions for that ROM for more details).
If the going between custom ROMs, or stock to a custom ROM, if the base is similar, you may be okay keeping data. But you may also have random and severe bugs. The safest thing to do in these cases is to wipe data.
This temp root is a NOGO considering the dead battery bug
If you root just make sure you don't run out of juice. You will not be able to charge the H1X while it is off!!
Which means you have to fiddle for hours to charge iit just a minimum to turn it back on and fully charge. Maybe you are unlucky and you have bricked it, once it has lost juice.
So root to me is a far way off until this problem ist solved.

[Q] Newbie telus SGS2X owner please help.

Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

I will again suggest ravers rc8 ics rom. I havent seen any issues other than missing wifi calling. No bloatware at all. Rare FCs...
Btw I amnot sure 989-d is also supported by that rom, but worth trying definitely

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
(pure stock?)
How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade

[Q] Data connection problem, and queries about rooting, flashing and stock recovery

So, this is my first time (both on xda, and on android)...
I've got a unlocked AT&T Captivate Glide with GB 2.3.6 (with the AT&T bloatware) on it.
The problem is that although the (voice) calling and texting and Google Play is working perfectly, the browsers (built-in as well as Dolphin) cannot surf any websites at all. Dolphin gave me and error msg "of my carrier not supporting cellular data or some malware preventing data connectivity"
What (if any) is the solution for this problem??
A thing I have been wondering about since I found XDA is the ICS update.
As is public knowledge, the ICS update (unofficial) for the i927 is available, and the repaired Samsung official update should also be round the corner. So, how can I update to either (official or unofficial) and still keep my phone unlocked??
And although I really am keen to get root access on my phone, I was wondering if I can update to ICS without rooting??
Finally, while I am eager to get ICS on the phone, I am apprehensive of bricking the phone.
So, how do I take a back-up of my phone as it is right now??
And what are the steps to initiate stock-recovery in case of a stalled update attempt??
I am sorry for the long list of queries, but I am what you may call a "super-noob", especially on android.
Any and all help is appreciated.

I have installed CWM on my Captivate Glide and have the official I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT.zip (from samfirmware) on my PC.
So, all I need to do now is make a nandroid backup and flash it with samfirmware ICS stock??
I apologize if I appear edgy, but I do not have the unlock code for the handset, and so I do not want disable (SIM usage on) it.
Thank you.
If you downloaded from Sam firmware you will not use CWM. Those roms are installed via ODIN. You can do that now. Just open up ODIN and flash it as you did to install CWM but without checking the PDA. Please note I believe this will remove your CWM and you will have to reinstall it again if you want it after you flashed the I927UCLJ3.

[Q] Reactivating Phone w/ Custom ROM

Hey there!
I have the PACman ROM installed on my VM(CDMA) HTC One V. It's currently inactive since I got a Galaxy S3, but I want to give this phone to a friend for them to use. Will I need to revert back to stock in order for them to activate the phone with a new number? Or can I just sign up like I normally would on the Virgin Mobile web site and hope everything works out?
Thanks in advance!

Has anyone rooted a Bell Canada HTC 10?

Hi everyone,
I've been researching for a couple days and I'm pretty much ready to root my phone. I have the Bell Canada version. All I want to do is unlock the bootloader, root it, and install Xposed. From what I can tell, I shouldn't have any problems. But I've been seeing a lot about the radio not working, and I'm concerned I might be screwing myself since there is no RUU for the international version of the HTC 10. Which means, as far as I can tell, that if I screw up my phone there's no going back. I haven't seen many threads addressing specifically the Bell/international version, so I want to be clear before I try anything. I have much experience rooting phones, but I'm new to HTC and it seems much more complicated and risky.
So I have a few questions:
- Has anyone successfully rooted the Bell/international variant of the HTC 10 without issues or radio loss?
- Further, has anyone gotten Xposed framework working?
- Is there a way to revert the phone back to stock/fully functioning in the case that the radio stops working or some other problems arise?
Thanks in advance.
I plan on getting one soon and root it. Would be fun to know if someone did it already.

Were you guys able to root and/or flash a ROM on the Bell model?
I am running Leeroid ROM on my Bell HTC 10. Very easy. Unlock bootloader, install twrp with fastboot and you're gold
Xposed works great too. Never had an issue with radio since rooting. I do have a minor problem which only started happening since i removed the rom encryption and my lte wont work until i go into mobile networks and reset apn to default. Once i do that my lte works like normal until i reboot and have to repeat the 10 second process.
And you can always save a twrp backup of your stock ROM if you want to go back.
sweet, thanks for confirming! Did you manage to get a Sharp display by chance? I have a feeling that literally all of the Bell ones are of Tianma.
Bell user here. I'm on stock rom with latest update with some mods. Phone runs pretty good now,
1.90.666.4 OS
Sunshine > $25 dollar paypal (S-OFF)
TWRP for recovery
AcoustiX_Audio_ZeroInfinity_v30 (make speaker louder)
ElementalX-HTC10-0.25-Sense (Plus $3.00 EX Kernal Manager Paypal)
Tweaked_pnp_thermal_ivicask_v19
I've rooted my HTC 10 using sunshine. I'm currently on Leedroid's ROM.
As anyone successfully restored to stock? I need to do so to unlock. I want to use a different SIM.
There was a bell ruu somewhere around. Just run that and you'll be back to full stock.
Do you have a link?
No but @xunholyx might be able to help
I have the 2.41.666.3 RUU. You can download it here.
Thanks a lot. I also need a stock recovery. Is it included?
Yes. RUUs always contain the stock recovery. They restore everything to stock. Also, it will wipe your phone, so backup anything you don't want to lose.
