Chinese fake Nexus Orb Chargers? - Nexus 5 Accessories

Has anyone had any experience with these?

Seems like your regular generic qi charger, but in the shape of an orb. I'm wondering whether or not it works well, and if it hold on to the phone while charging.

I just got one in the mail. Looks the same as the ones you posted. Nexus 5 fits well on and stays in place. Doesn't seem to be too sensitive to placement of the phone. Just doesn't read the very bottom or top of phone, but expected not to. Also, works with a case on. So far it's nice for $20.
Over the next couple days I'll see how it actually preforms and see what power it's giving off.

Hi there,
Any updates on this orb? Curious to hear what performance you have experienced with it so far.
Thanks.

Sorry about that, check out this post I made on what I thought initially with some pictures. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47500010&postcount=62
It's now been through about 3-4 charges and so far I'm happy with the purchase. It charged from 10% - 88% in 2:08 at 6-750 mA, then 88% - 100% in 50 at 3-400 mA. It seems to slow the charge when it gets close to 90%. Can't say if it trickle charges but it doesn't seem like it's overcharging. Battery temp drops when it hits 100% and when I pulled it off about 6 hours later it was at 100% still but cool to the touch. I read some chargers aren't trickle because of the software on the N5, not sure though.
Placement isn't very sensitive but can't go very low or high on it, works in landscape and with a case. It has three LEDs red, green, and blue and aren't blinding at night. I'm probably going to get another for $25.

Thanks for the info. 40 C (104 F) seems a bit warm but I understand that is normal for wireless charging. It's good to know it was cool to the touch when you took it off. The charge rate is comparable to other Qi chargers, though significantly slower than wired. I would say it's a fair trade-off for saving wear and tear on your micro USB port though. It's also good to hear the LEDs aren't blinding.
I am trying to decide between this particular model and the Metrans MWT03 charger (also in the $20-25 price range). I would say my deciding factors are if the charger 1) does trickle charging at 100% while keeping the phone cool instead of completely shutting off, 2) doesn't have an audible notification- some people find it annoying to hear a beep in the middle of the night every time there is a break in the charge.
Edit: never mind, I found the listing through your entry on the Qi survey. If anything changes in your experience with the orb, please keep us updated!

Yea, it seemed high but seeing others I didn't worry. Looking at the log from the past few nights, the max it actually hit was 36c so not sure how come it got so hot the first night. Having the phone at 100 when I pull it off is nice and I like the incline for viewing it while charging. Still not sure about the trickle charge, I notice if I take it off when it's at 100% it will not charge the device and the battery falls. I will have to test to see if it picks the charge back up at the lower 90%.

Did anybody already order one of these in Europe?
I just can't find a shop that ships to Italy.

Where did you get yours from (though I'm sure they're all mostly the same..).
Also- does it make any sound when it charges? Like an annoying beep or anything like that.
Also- was there any name or brand on it?

Today I ordered one of the black ones from a shop on alibaba, hopefully it will arrive soon.
I'm gonna post my experience here as soon as I get my hands on it. I hope DHL delivers fast.

Here you go, this one is a little more than $30 but I liked it since it was shipped from CA. Paid $1 for First Class mail and got it in 2 days. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111175185798?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649http://www.ebay.com/itm/111175185798?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
There are no noises from the charger and no branding. Only thing it says is "RC Electronics" on the very bottom.

Thanks!

Finally got it
After a slight dispute with customs office (had to pay nothing in the end, yay! ) I was finally able to try one out, having paid $24 (~17€) for it, including shipping costs.
The box looks surprisingly similar to the crazily overpriced original Nexus 4 charger, which I tried to get first, but no luck for me.
It comes with just the Charger, a reasonably long USB cable and the power adapter. Everything we need to set it up and get it running.

I was lucky, there's been a hole in either charger and AC Adapter, for each end of the cable, and fortunately they fit. :good:
The charger itself looks pretty neat, and to my surprise feels somehow heavy. I feared, that I could knock it over by misplacing the phone or something, but it weights easily double or more than the phone, so big plus on this side.
On the right, there are three LED's(red blue green, not in the picture) which switch on depending on the devices charging status. Their brightness level is reasonably low, which makes it no problem to keep it near the bed.
At first I was pretty skeptical, that the phone would stick to the charger, and so slide off, due to the steep slope. Once I removed the plastic foil on it, my doubts were blown away. That surface is so freakin' sticky, you fear more, that your phone will never come off the charger again. It absolutely stays in place, and it is not even that sensitive where or how to place the phone on it (just the very top and bottom didn't work).
And here we have the only downside. As it sticks so good, I fear that it will attract dust. Lots of it. And after some use, it will look a little bit nasty. If I find a way to clean it without losing the stickiness, It is perfect.
I didn't have time to do a 5-100% charge, but what I saw until now it charges ~ 1/4 slower than with the original power adapter. I didn't stop the exact time but in about an hour it charged 35-40 %. It seems that it becomes slower towards the end and just tops off the phone anytime it drops below 100% when full. Furthermore, as reportet by others, the phone is becomming slightly warm, but not even close to "hot", which I guess is pretty normal.
As an extra, they provided a short manual with warnings and warranty stuff, which is not really useful, but as for most chinese products, very funny to read
[TL;DR]
So overall I am very, very satisfied with my purchase it looks like the N4 orb (just the center "nexus" text is missing), and it works very well with the Nexus 5 (pessimistic guess 1/3 of battery per hour).
There is absolutely no chance that the phone slides off or doesn't stick to the charger, and it is not really sensitive to the positioning either.
Only minor doubt is that after some time dust will stick to the surface and give it a nasty look, but I hope I can prevent that from happening.

Yikes, I was hoping to find exactly this thread about a couple of weeks ago before I ordered the very same.
My experience with the charger has been largely the same. Seems to charge just as quickly as my official Nexus Orb, the LEDs are not super bright, and while my phone does get slightly warmer, I would be surprised if anyone considers it hot at all.
As far as comparisons with the official Nexus Orb, the materials look the same. If anything, I think this one is *slightly* lighter. Both orbs are identical in terms of the sticky materials. My N5 has never slipped a millimeter on either orb.
EDIT: Oh one big difference is the power adapter block itself. On the knockoff, the adapter is one of those stupid, massive bricks that takes up like two and a half outlet spots on a power strip. It drives me crazy. I brought my Nexus 5 adapter into the office so I can have those other one and a half outlets back. That's probably my only big gripe with the knockoff.

Official vs Replicas
Not sure if others have had the same experience but I've been using the official Nexus 4 Orb for almost a year now. I bought one of these replica's about 4 months ago for half the price of the official. I have to say, it's pretty neat. I've always been a fan of docks on my desk but the orb is brilliant as it serves a dual purpose for me (dock/stand plus charging ofcourse).
Anyway, all in all, they both work great as mentioned above. However, the stickiness of the replica isn't quite the same after a few months whereas the official nexus 4 orb is still perfect for me. Having said that, people had different experiences with even the official one so it could just be me. A great device at the end of the day and well the good news is that it still works after 4 months! (I'm just not very confident of the phone sticking on it overnight/for long periods as I have seen it slip/slide whereas the phone stays perfectly on the official one overnight).

Official Sammy 2000mah vs anker 1900mah

I'm getting both soon so ill post a review. Anyone have experience with both?
Initial reaction to 2000mah - WOW. destroys even my old iPhone 4. And on my iPhone I actively turned off wifi, data etc. On my sgs2 wifi is on the whole time, and I've been listening to music on my Beats (battery hog) the whole time. Right now I'm on 80% after 1.5 hrs screen on 33% brightness, and beats playing the whole time. Stock ROM btw!

itll probs be ok dude but i got to say and warn people otherwise if anything happend i would feel bad
i think it was more the charger , it was the cheap black one , not the white anker one , perhaps this is why it blew up??
however this is a review for the sensation version and again it blows up when in the charger

here you can see the cheap black charger
here you can see the proper anker white charger
I bought the same kit, two anker batteries with the black charger, no problems, been charging them fine, in fact they last a fair amount more than the original battery, my usual usage on the standard battery has me reaching for the charger around 8 hours, I am typing this out with the same kind of usage with 42% battery life left, I would say you had a faulty charger, not unusual with most things made so ****e these days from china, hardly any product testing done anymore, I have used my anker black charger lots and its worked a treat.

99% it was a faulty charger that havent been tested. I dont think it will ever blow up in your pocket
As stated before these batteries are fine it's the very cheap build chargers, if you ever open one up you would more likely dash it in the bin exposed connections. Bay the batteries and a good brand changer...

[REVIEW] KiDiGi Wireless Charging Dock for Google New Nexus 7 (2013)

PROS:
I picked one of these up on eBay (UK) for about £30, delivered from Hong Kong.
Received it in 7 days.
The build quality is good.
It's powerful enough to keep the tablet charged whilst the daydream is running.

CONS:
The light on the front is actually very bright, but I suppose a small label can block this out. Not an ideal design idea, though, especially as it blinks whilst charging and can make your dark bedroom flash.
The charger that comes with it is high powered enough for the job, although my wife complains that she can hear it buzz (or the dock buzzes, I'm not sure which), I hear it also and it is rather annoying.
The main issue is, though, when you place the tablet in the dock, there is a beep to tell you it is connected and charging, and let me tell you, the charging beep is absolutely deafening and can easily wake my baby when I put it in the dock before I get in bed.
The notification beep is a completely useless feature that only serves to wind the customer up. The tablet will tell you it's charging anyway, and also the flashing LED on the front (that should have been static and much dimmer).
Initially, when I first used it, the dock reached full charge and just kept silently topping up without the notification beep, so it was bearable. But (and this is a BIG 'but') the last couple of nights it started beeping every 30 seconds as the daydream took the battery down to 99% and the dock reconnected to top it back up. It is very annoying when this starts happening as it can happen twice, sometimes even 3 times a minute until you take the tablet off the dock. It's so ill-thought-out it's almost laughable (or it's a fault, I'm not entirely sure?).
Curiously, the first time it did this, I rebooted the tablet and it stopped the dock beeping whilst it was maintaining 100%, it just kept the tablet charging silently, but last night after about an hour on charge (in the middle of the night) it started doing it again. I had to get up and take the tablet off the dock - it's the only solution I'm afraid. The really infuriating thing is, this beep is so ludicrously loud, I couldn't even put the dock in my spare bedroom and use it as a charger, as it is loud enough to wake my other children in the rooms next door!
Therefore, in conclusion and unfortunately, I have to warn you NOT to buy one of these if you don't like the idea of cracking it open and attempting to disable the speaker. I might write to the manufacturer if I get time, and see what their thoughts are. I'll let you know if this happens and what the response is.
CONCLUSION:
A VERY stupid couple of design ideas ruin what is an otherwise well made feeling dock!
UPDATE:
I wrote to KiDiGi and they replied immediately and explained that I could "cut the wire to disconnect the beeper". I think maybe something was lost in translation as I popped it open and found this:
Well it's hardly easy to disable the speaker as the speaker is actually soldered to the main board (and I don't have a soldering iron to remove it). So I decided to disable it with brute force. Not ideal, granted, but the dock is useless with the speaker activated, so I guess I've little to lose. Clearly the suggestion of cutting the wire will disable the LED not the speaker, but I don't want to disable the LED, it's useful, just too darn bright and annoying, it's the beep that is the main issue:
So I decided to take a folk prong and placed it in the hole of the plastic speaker cover and prise it upwards, with the hope the speaker would come away from the board. It didn't, it just broke the black plastic casing around the speaker. Once this had happened, I used the folk prong to remove the little metal speaker baffle inside. To do this I inserted the folk prong into the side of the speaker baffle and prised the metal disc out. It's a 30 second job, but far from an elegant solution.
Whilst I was there, I decided to address the LED. I placed a folded piece of paper between the LED and the cover. This time this was a simple and elegant solution as I didn't want to cut the wire completely. A little LED is useful when it isn't turning your room into a disco:
The net result is; that the dock now doesn't beep when the tablet is inserted and the LED is very dim, so doesn't flash so brightly, and is only really visible in a dark room at night:
It wasn't a tasking job, anyone could do it, but it's frustrating that you need to do it.
The manufacturer has agreed to send me a new dock without the beeper, but I won't hold my breath.
I did actually hear the charger noise my wife was complaining about last night, too. It is rather irritating, but I'll try another charger and see if that solves it. If the manufacturer sticks to their word and sends me another dock, hopefully this will be resolved, too, as it seems to be a faulty batch of chargers that are causing it?
UPDATE:
Just a quick update, I received my replacement from the manufacturer and can confirm they've removed the annoying beeper. They've also dimmed the LED and the buzz from the charger is gone. Fair's fair, they listened to the customer and have now created a cracking product and I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
To the guy asking about if the case would work. I still don't have a case for mine, so it's hard to say, but if you look at the bottom where the tablet slots in, it seems big enough to take a case too as it is a graduating slot, if you know what I mean. What I was unsure about was if the charging would work through the case, so I tried to emulate this by jamming a notepad behind the tablet. There is approximately 20 sheets of paper and a huge gap between the tablet and the back pad of the dock, and it still charged, so I guess technically it should work, but couldn't 100% confirm it. Hope this helps and sorry for the really slow reply.
Excuse the dust, it's my office monitor base, my wife would be notified if she knew I'd posted this picture!?

Just wanted to let everybody know that I picked one of these up on eBay (UK) for £40, delivered from Hong Kong.
Received it in 7 days and it works like a charm. Couldn't be more happy with it. It has a very solid build quality, as good as the official Asus one I had for my old N7, and you get a really high quality and powerful (USB) charger bundled.
Highly recommended.

Was looking into this as well, as i use my SGS3 w/ charger/dock as my bedside alarm clock and want to replace it with my Nexus 7. The one thing i've read that isn't good is it has a "charging" light when on stand and a beeping noise upon fully charge (that also goes off after fully charge drops and charges again). Can you confirm this? Thanks.
Does it work with a poetic slimline case attached?

Not sure I'm afraid, I don't have a case for it yet...but do have a dent in the side and big scratch on the screen where I dropped it in a MacDonald's car park and it went for a slide under a car. I can at least confirm that a 4ft drop onto concrete is survivable, just!

The jury is still out on this a bit. The light is pretty dim and doesn't really bother me, and a small label can block this out.
But the charging beep is deafening. Initially, when first used it, the dock reached full charge and just kept silently topping up, but the last couple of nights it did start beeping every 30 seconds as the daydream took the battery down to 99% and the dock reconnected to top it up. I'm not too concerned personally, as I'll just open it up and disconnect that speaker, but it is very annoying when this starts happening as it can happen a few times a minutes until you take the tablet off the dock.
Curiously, the first time it did this, I rebooted the tablet and it stopped the dock beeping, it just kept the tablet charging silently, but last night after about an hour on charge (in the middle of the night) it started doing it again. Therefore, unfortunately, I have to warn you not to buy one of these if you don't like the idea of cracking it open and disabling the speaker.
A VERY, VERY stupid design fault!

that's a shame. i'm still looking for another dock charger i can use in landscape for my alarm clock. some day.
I've got good news and bad news. There is nothing that can be done about that annoying beep. I can tell you how to fix the other issue tho. KiDiGi determined that some of the USB wall adapters they sent were bad. They sent me a replacement. I have not gotten it yet, but I did use another 2.1Amp USB wall wart and all is fine now. That should fix the buzzing and the constant beeping.

The company contacted me yesterday to tell me they're despatching one without the beep. I'll test it and report back, although my trick in the OP does work, although has voided the warranty of course. I'll report back ASAP. If it works, I suggest you contact the manufacturer direct and ask if you can buy one, because the beep is the only thing that really causes a headache. Otherwise it's a good device.

I think with a qi from eBay and some piece of wood and tape , you can build your own support in 45 minutes.
I did a support last year in foam(white staff found in TV box).
U just need to cut it and tape.
U can even paint it.
Why not make a post "best hand made wireless support"?

OP, thanks for the great review. It sparked my interest in the charging station. I emailed the company asking about the 'beep-free' unit. Their response:
We have the unit temporary removed the listing.
Please keep an eye at 4u-mobi(dot)com it should be relisted back up again.
So, perhaps they are changing over their entire inventory?

So I've been looking at these mounts and am on the fence about it. Costs a bit more than you would usually drop on a mount ($70-$100), but reviews of it are quite amazing. The sticky/suction pad is apparently really good, and the arms are stable and have a smooth release. On top of that it has a built in NFC chip. Now the Wireless Charging is where i get a little iffy. This device puts out 750mA. Comparitively the Nexus 4 charging orb puts out 1,000mA. I also have read in various places that some of Nokia's wireless chargers have a cycle issue where the device charges/stops/charges/stops. This effect might be visible on a Nexus 4 using this charger at this video (53seconds). Anyone have one they can test, or have recommendations to a similar mount?
I've read a lot of reviews about a critical part breaking easily.
Sent from my SGS3.
So, did anyone tried it? Does it work with Nexus 5?
From the info that i could dig, the nexus 4 does not work, probably because the location of the charging coil.

From what I've read and researched, the problem wasn't with Nokia's chargers but the first versions of the N4, later revisions worked fine.

When you put a Nexus 5 in the Nokia CR 200 it initially shows charging. Some time later (5, 10 ,30 seconds, maybe a few minutes - it seems to vary) it will stop charging. If you leave the phone in the dock, it will intermittently charge.
In my test over a couple of hours, the phone discharges pretty fast.
My conclusion is that it's useless as a charger for the Nexus 5.
If anyone has a workaround, I'd love to know, as the CR 200 is an otherwise sturdy bit of kit and I'm not sure what QI Wireless alternatives are available.

Thanks for letting us know. I've been actively seeking a qi car mount with nfc and this one was the prime choice aside from building my own. I wonder if it has to do with the bottom piece that sticks out for holding your phone in portrait mode, maybe the qi coils just aren't close enough together.
Nokia CR 200 works with Nexus 5 without any problems.
I received the Nokia cr 200 from Amazon yesterday and can confidently say it works brilliant. I haven't got any problems as mentioned in this thread. Just place the phone in the charger and the light at the bottom goes green and charged as it should. NFC is OK but got to know where the NFC chip is at the back of Nexus 5. I used the Google maps navigation and BT music streaming to my ford sony dab unit at the same time for about 50mins and the battery percentage just stays at the same level as before putting on charge. With BT music streaming it actually charges as the screen is switched off I guess. Its a good quality car mount but he clip is not the strongest I would say. Suction is absolutely fine as it has a stickiness to the suction. I don't know what app I got to use to check the charge voltage etc. Pls let me know if u want to know any details. But it works as it should very happy.
Out of curiousity, if NFC is so important, why not just buy an NFC sticker and slap it on there? Is it because it wouldn't look as cool?

have a look at what "OWL" has to offer...I ordered One....we'll See what this thing can Do.
More of a note to myself so I can find the thread again, but also just ordered one. Have a long car journey next week so should be able to give it a good run in, if it arrives in time.
Amazon seem to be doing it for £54 which seemed to be the cheapest outside of ebay
So it arrived today from Amazon and have had a bit of a play
Initial thoughts is that it is quite sturdy and looks good. Did the shake test and it did not come away, however a point of note is that it seems to grip but give it another squeeze to make it go a couple more notches in which kept the back flush with the charging plate. Just squeezing the grips until it makes contact won't hold it firmly in place and you get movement like on the Youtube review.
I've connected it to my bench supply as I'm at work. With the screen off/no GPS running its charges from 72% to 100% in just over an hour. The screen seems warm to touch and the back hotter which was expected. I've not had it been or connect/disconnect charging as mentioned in some reviews but I stress that this is on my desk at work.
Tonight drive home is about 40 min so will run TomTom and see if there is any power drop and tomorrow I have a 200 mile round trip so I can get some good testing done then as well. I'm hoping I will see the battery stay at the same level as when it was connected.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a launcher tailored to cars (car mode)?
Hi More testing done and I'm impressed so far.
Setting back home last night, I set TomTom up, the Settings of the phone was
GPS - Device Only
Automatic Backlight
TomTom in night mode
The battery at the start was 66% and at the end of the 2 1/2 hour journey it grew to 79%. So the phone charged while the screen was on and was using GPS.
Now admittedly this was not during the day, I did not have time to check the battery on the journey to the destination, however I did not notice any really drop in the battery from the icon. However halfway through the journey I noticed that the battery was not charging as I was rushing when I placed the phone in the cradle it was not fully flush with the back plate and/or I did not squeeze the clips that would hold it in place securely.
I need more testing but I think using this would be fine, potentially if you had full backlight and GPS running with TomTom in day mode I guess there may be a drop in the battery, but not much.

Next week when I have a chance I will attach it to my bench supply and do some testing at different levels of brightness and more than happy to test with bumpers/cases if people like to send them
I'm rather surprised by those of you getting it to charge, mine wouldn't put through enough charge when GPS, screen on and streaming music.

Moto 360: Form over Function? [Review]

I'm sure most of you on this forum have heard of Android Wear (if you haven't, it's Google's operating system for wearables), so I won't go too in depth about the software and it's functionality (although for the entirety of my review period I've used the latest 4.4W.1 software revision, which I installed straight out of the box).
This review is about all the good, bad, and the ugly of the Moto 360.

Now, when Motorola first announced this watch almost six months ago, I was one of the first to board the hype train. After wearing and using one at Google I/O, I moved to first class. And as soon as we heard of the TI OMAP 3 SoC inside, I climbed out the window and bailed.
If it isn't already obvious, I downright dreaded the prospect of four year-old silicon running my $250 smartwatch.
But we all know Motorola's pulled off impressive feats with low-specced hardware in the past (Moto G, 1st Gen Moto X), so when my free unit for being a Google I/O attendee came I figured I'd give it a shot.
When you first see this watch, you'll immediately notice the display. With the Gorilla Glass 3s beveled edges, punchy colors, and surprisingly good viewing angles, it gives a great first (and lasting) impression.
My only complaints here are the extremely low resolution (text is huge and noticeably pixelated), and how the bevel causes the parts of some notifications to distort when viewed on an angle (albeit only with watch faces that have 'large' notification cards such as Google's 'Simple').
But then there's that "flat tire effect" on the bottom. But I'll be honest with you, I actually prefer this to a fully round display.
I find Google now cards look infinitely better with a straight line on the top and bottom, rather than in a semicircle:
As you can see, most of the space taken up by the bezel on the Moto watch is just blank white on the G Watch R. Hence is why I like Moto's approach here.
Now, onto battery life. Unfortunately, it's a real rough spot for this smartwatch. And that's not saying much, because I like to charge it every night. It keeps it a routine, makes a nice alarm clock, and it's almost easier to place it in the magnetic dock (that uses Qi inductive charging, mind you) than on the table next to it.
And while I may be fine placing my watch on a charger each night, I'm not OK with worrying about the battery life before that time comes. With my G Watch, I can go a 20+ hour day without even breaching 30%.
But this thing can't last a 16 hour day. Even a with light use (on Auto Brightness), just three or four notifications, and little interaction otherwise (no Google Now, either). After about 11 or 12 hours, it begins its automatic shutdown.
And that was with Ambient Mode on.
Oh, but a little something on Ambient Mode first. Every single review I've seen has gotten this wrong.
Ambient Mode does NOT keep the display on all the time.
What it does, is it makes the watch come on in it's dimmed state with less motion than it takes for a full activation (pay attention to the angle of the watch screen in the pictures below. It shows the minimum amount of movement required to change from black to dimmed to active.)
(It's a little dark, but the screen is flat and not tilted to the side like the others)
While you can get significantly improved battery life (2-3x better) turning Ambient Mode off, it's no use to me to have a watch that doesn't tell me the time all the time. My LG G watch, on the other hand, gets better battery life with its screen on 24/7 than the Moto does with the screen off. That's a real shame.
However, if the abysmal battery life wasn't enough of a downfall, the horrendous performance just adds insult to injury.
"Horrendous" may be too strong of a word. But only half the time. Half the time I tap the screen when it's off, and it doesn't wake up. Half the time when I rotate it all the way, the screen stays dim. Half the time when I scroll, it drops about half the frames. And half the time when I say "OK Google", it just sits there, and the rest of the bus stares at me like I have three heads (which is strange since Motorola has bragged about their superior voice technology and including two microphones).
Inconsistency is something you'll experience quite often while using the Moto 360—you never know if it'll work perfectly... Or freeze.
If I had to guess, I'd say the performance hiccups are from throttling. While the device is off, it undoubtedly lowers CPU+GPU clock speeds to save power, and it may just take a couple seconds once awoken to ramp back up again. Hopefully these issues (amongst others) can be addressed in a future software update.
Well fortunately, that's most of the bad stuff. The rest is almost purely positive.
The stainless steel construction feels great, the leather strap is high-quality, and even on my miniscule wrists the Moto 360 fits like a glove. The gold trim around the sleep/wake button (that can also open settings if held) shows how much attention to detail Motorola took in designing this watch.
Lastly, the heartrate sensor is pretty cool. It tends to take a long time if activated on demand, but it does a good job of measuring how much "active time" (with a heart rate between 100 and 120 beats per minute) I've had in a day, and alerting me when I've completed the daily 30 minutes (although I'd really like to be able to change the heartrate window and time amount, as I usually meet this preset goal by noon).
So now it's conclusion time, and I have pretty mixed feelings about the Moto 360. But I think Ron Amadeo from Ars Technical got it right by calling it "Beautiful outside, ugly inside".
It's an astounding piece of hardware, but the lackluster internals hold it back from the true glory I feel it deserves.
While hopefully battery life and performance can be (at least partially) addressed in future updates, I think I'd have to wait until the 2nd generation to wholeheartedly recommend this watch to anyone.
If you wear watches solely as a fashion statement, work short days, or are fine with the screen off, this is the best smartwatch you can buy.
But if you aren't part of that niche, I feel you'd be better with the ($70 cheaper) LG G Watch.
You've likely realized by now that I've drawn numerous comparisons to LG's first Android Wear offering. I've been using mine every day since I got it at Google I/O, and it's straight up more polished than the 360. Everything works, all the time. No muss, no fuss, as they say.
With smartwatches, I don't just want another gadget to mess around with. I want something that will simplify my life. In its current stage, the Moto 360 does the opposite.
All things considered, I have to give the Motorola Moto 360 a solid 80%, mostly because that beautiful screen just doesn't make a difference when it's dead.
It's the age-old question of form over function, and it's up to you what matters most.

I've read a number of forums discussing the battery life. Almost every single forum comes to the conclusion that the battery life improves and stabilizes after about 4-5 days. Can you tell me how many days you wore the watch before writing this review?
OP
Thank you for climbing inside of my brain and stealing all of my thoughts to write this review. It saved me a ton of time! I highly doubt the battery life can be improved upon drastically with software updates so I think I have to return this one. What a shame. Ick I may actually have to go back to a gear live and its horrible charging cradle....
The clear difference with this watch is the Qi charging. It completely outweighs the battery issues in my opinion. But, I agree faster is much better.
As stated elsewhere it might be better to have an even thinner watch with even smaller battery since the ability to Qi charge and OTG quick charge is possible. But, since the watch is *new* we have not (yet) seen innovative OTG Qi quick charge accessories.
Good review.

We shouldn't have to charge the watch but once a day, overnight and thats it. I'm not carrying around a second charger just to keep my watch going. The gear 2 I had lasted 48 hours with extremely heavy use. The gear live with a screen that never turned off (only dimmed), last 24 hours with some to spare, with very heavy use. I don't need it to last a week. I need it to last ONE DAY. The fact that motorola let this device out of the gates blows my mind.
Great review, obviously the internals was a bad choice, but after using for days my 360, it wont be going back. The watch looks good, its lightweight, doesn't have a great battery, but the qi charging and how fast it charges makes me forget the battery life. I have a qi charging at work, and the other at home.
I think the problem its people expected too much of first version of the device from moto and a it to be a flawless one, early adopters always are the beta testers for products.

I would argue the Moto 360 shouldn't have been a 'beta' device. The G Watch and Gear Live were. Motorola waited an extra 3 months to release theirs to smooth out bugs and optimize it, but when it's buggier, slower, and has worse battery life than the real 'beta' devices I have to wonder what Moto was doing all that time.
And about the Qi thing: I didn't mention it in the review mainly because I forgot it even was a feature XD. I never once thought "Oh cool, this has Qi". I'm definitely not planning to use any third party chargers, and I'm guessing most others who buy this will just stick with the dock that it shipped with as well.
It's kinda cool, but I find LG's implementation with the G Watch just as good if not better, but then again I never lose stuff like charging docks
Also, I (along with a majority of Android users) don't have any other Qi devices, and even though I could add the functionality to my G3 if I wanted to it just charges larger capacity devices too slow for my tastes.
I'm not trying to hate on Qi, only I don't quite get all the hype/praise about wireless charging in a watch when 99% of people are just gonna use the dock it came with.

I know motorola did bad, but a this moment like you title said, i prefer form over function. I am techaholic and when i saw in my hand the g watch i hated it, i dont want to feel that i have a smartphone on my wrist.
I understand that for you qi charging isnt great and i know isnt a feature, for me its another story, after using it on my nexus 5, i ordered the qi back for the g3, because I missed it, i hate plugin in and out usb cables, even more using cheap ones that doesnt last, apple nail it with lightning connector but thats another story. I work 8-9 hours and having slow charge at desk doesnt bother and for me qi charging its a bonus vs propietary connectors.

Just like 99% of ChromeCast users are not going to use the mirroring feature. But, I use CC mirroring almost every day. I guess that is why I liked your review - more about value from the typical user's perspective.
Yet, Qi on the Moto 360 is inexpensive ($15 small chargers already) and the Qi technology is expanding to portable external battery power/recharger units. I think innovation on Qi quick chargers could be very helpful to wearable technology.
Again, good review, especially the comments about beta quality device stuff.
Edited to mention Qi support.
Thanks for the reminder guys!

Wireless charging is cool, but hardly a deal maker, lol. It's not like I've ever been too lazy to connect something to a charger!
Also, it provides the USB connection necessary to send large amounts of data to the watch (custom roms?), which may be a problem for the 360...

No, but most of us have Qi chargers on our desk, night stand and I even have one in my car. I have a 7,000 mah battery that's about the size of my Note 3 that has a built-in Qi charger. They're everywhere.
If you have a watch with a proprietary charger you only have one charger. I don't know of any of the other smart watches where you can buy an extra charger. So far, the Moto 360 is the only one.
To me that's a big deal.

Good point... That would have been helpful, as I brought my stock charger to work a couple of times and accidentally left it there. I actually had to turn my car around once because it was a Friday, lol

You can get an extra charger from the Play Store for the G Watch.
It's true though, if you charge your devices in multiple locations it's nice.
But IMO we really should only have to charge our watches when we go to sleep.
At least the G Watch and Gear Live can do that

I wrote my LG G Watch vs Moto 360 comparison at the bottom of my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-360/general/moto-360-compared-to-lg-g-watch-t2874806
And I completely agree with you on everything, except the voice recognition. My LG G Watch would sit there sometimes and not understand what I said, or it would just take a long time before it showed what I said. With the Moto 360 I've been able to talk to it even in noisy situations and the text appears almost instantly.
But I said the same exact thing how I think the CPU is underclocked until you touch the screen, then you notice the laggy animations for half a second before the CPU ramps up. Pretty annoying. But a gen 2 will definitely fix all the flaws on this device, and updates to this gen may even fix most of them.

Yeah it's been the opposite for me. Unless I wait for the CPU to ramp up, the 360 rarely hears me correctly.

[*NEW*] Nexus 5 Battery Upgrade! BL-T19 2700mAh Mod (nexus 5x battery)

The Nexus 5 was produced a while ago, more than 4 years!
But this phone is still fast and I'm using it as my daily device. But there was one problem, the battery!
If you want to replace it you still get an (if you're lucky) an original used battery. If you're unlucky it's a fake one or it was just lying around, loosing all capacity and is at least as bad as the battery you already have.
In 2013/2014 a lot of people managed to press an Lg G2 battery inside the nexus, the BL-T7
BUT this phone and it's battery is very old, like the nexus 5
I tried the BL-T7 Mod, after receiving a lot of fake batterys, I finally got an original one, but yeah, still a 3 years old battery, that was lying around - so it was not good at all, and I lost NFC and Wireless charging
See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/3000mah-battery-mod-lg-g2-battery-t3651460/post73284739#post73284739
#############################################################################
Here is what I got for you:
On Ebay, I was looking for a new phone (because of bad battery life) and I found a perfectly fine looking Nexus 5x for 20€, the seller said it won't turn on. I ordered it and i did not manage to repair it, the seller just lied, bc he didn't say it was damaged by water
What I did: I saw the battery, thought about, "hey this is a 2016 battery, original and it may fit"
I ripped it out and really managed to swap this 2700mAh BL-T19 battery with my Lg G2 3000mah BL-T7 battery that was inside my nexus
And holy, THIS BATTERY LIFE! - 5hours SOT under heavy load!: https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e "normal load"
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO min brightness, not doing much (only whatsapp), I know that is unrealistic, but at least, it's achievable!!
Benefits:
it's a new Battery (produced in 2015/2016)
NFC working!
Wireless charging working!
The nexus 5x had a lot of problems, a lot of dead phones, and if you're lucky you can buy a defective phone (like me) and get a fully functional battery!!
#############################################################################
NOTE: Use Tape, this is a powerful battery, if the wires touch each other, it may start burning
I won't take any responsibility if your phone get's destroyed!
#############################################################################
How I did this:
this is a BL-T19:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and this is the one in the nexus 5 (BL-T9):
as you can see, the nexus 5x's is longer, but it's the same width. It's longer than the lg g2's one so i had to make space
I won't make pictures of my mod because i already did it, closed my phone and I really don't want to reopen it did it, see below (5.)
1. Completely disassemble your phone, you need to remove metal from the frame
2. Search a dremel to make space: I have no dremel so I used a DC motor and put sandpaper with zip ties on it (https://imgur.com/a/O7SIU)
3. Now remove metal from the frame, I have here some pictures on my testing phone frame: https://imgur.com/a/53tbX
4. Replace the battery! Do it exacly like here: https://imgur.com/a/Yj7ww
I won't decribe it any further, you may ask for help here or in older threads (Lgg2 battery replacement)
5. Here are some other Pictures I edited for you, the 2nd and third are the important ones! https://imgur.com/a/lpz8W
here are Pics of my mod, don't worry, mine looks a little different because I used another batteryboard because I broke my original one: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj
6. You're done! try to bootup, close the phone, and be happy about a big battery NFC and Wireless charging!!!
Note that you may have to remove some plastic from the cover that goes onto the mainboard,

Did that mod yesterday, so I don't know yet
Update: I did my first full charge 2 hours ago, have 1h sot and still 91% left, holy moly
Update 2: 77%, 2.5h sot: whatsapp, browsing and youtube half brightness and an slight overclock to 2.35Ghz (elementalx kernel)
Will report tomorrow after a full day usage because for now i'm gonna load it overnight
Okay my test results are here!
https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
My display brightness was maxed out most of the time.
5h Sot for an intensive workload is very impressive! I tried everything except gaming to stress the hell out of that battery, and it lasted so long!
I'm gonna test a normal workload and upload pictures here if you want.
wow great work!
I'm still using the hammy as my daily driver and using the first original battery.
will try your mod if I have time and the technician
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e 7 ****ing hours!
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO Wow.
.... That seems a little crazy for a battery that has only 400mAh higher capacity than the original 2300.. so.. a 20% boost?
Well, I undervolted and my screen was on low brightness
But my core clock is at 2.35Ghz
It was not a worst case, but it's real
and it's not only 20%, because the original battery is veeery old, you are very lucky if you get one with more than 1700mah left
I doubt any of us were getting 5-6 hours SOT even 4 years ago.. maybe, though. It has been a long time. I'm not doubting you, just wondering out loud how that works out since the math sounds weird.

Mostly it's because I really tried to get the best Sot, with using it not much. So my phone was a long time on my desk with whatsapp open, and I was only texting.
That's no usual usage, my usual usage was 7 hours Sot, still impressive
Looks difficult to replace mate
sure, it's not the easiest swap.
Bit if you can use a dremel and solder 5 cables there should be no problem
I did my mod in 2h
expect 1h because theres no need to try and error anymore
I picked up a 5x battery and was going to attempt this but holy cow, you have to make about 1cm of room from cutting the frame/plastic covers. That's far more material than I'm comfortable doing... I'd say keep looking for a similarly sized battery since you're manually wiring the electrodes to the mainboard anyway...

I think you didn't take a look at my pictures, you have to remove everything around it, and reassemble the battery board on the side, if you need one more centimeter, you did something realy wrong
I have an original 5x battery, and I can confirm that theres enough space to fit it in
EDIT: I reopened my phone to fix something up, I made Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj
Poor device, looks fried

Ah I did miss that. Once I peeled the battery and swapped boards it appears to fit with trimming just the top and bottom borders.
That said, it still didn't work for me... I must've fried my board because it just keeps booting to the battery icon over and over, even when I remove the battery connections.
Also, in your pics you seem to only have two wires directly soldered to the three pads below the battery connector then another wire going into the battery connector itself... is that right?
Anyone know if there's a way to recover from the battery icon reboot sequence? I'm able to get to the fastboot mode, but if it tries to boot into recovery or system it'll just shut off and go back to the battery icon.

That's exactly the reason why I now use another battery board. I killed my original one and had the same battery icon reboot problem. And yes one wire is going to the battery connector itself because I broke the pin on the board, but don't worry, It's the same connection. So you can either use the pins or the connector or a mix between
To 'recover' your phone, try to just disconnect the third pin, this is the thermal sensor pin. It's on the board the very left one. Here's a picture with just the + and - connected: https://imgur.com/a/GVPMt
Great mod! I may try it when i get a nexus 5x battery. Btw, how are this golden "wires" called? (The ones that goes from the positive and negative to the board)
