Google Search - Latest Update
v3.1.8
Changes:
It officially brings Search version 3 (3.1.8 to be exact) that shipped in KitKat to all devices running 4.1+. This includes an updated UI, new refresh animation, among other things.
Because Search houses the Google Experience Launcher (GEL) inside, this update also brings GEL to all devices running Android 4.1+. All you need to do after installing Search 3.1.8 is install the launcher app from here, and voila - GEL for all, not just KitKat devices. I have it running on 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4 on both phones and tablets, and it finally looks perfect.
As I mentioned above, 3.1.8 completely fixes the wonky GEL layout on tablets. As you may have seen yesterday, several things on the Nexus 7, for example, were out of whack - the keyboard was popping when you tapped Home, the icons were old, and the Search box was off-center. All fixed.
Remember: GEL does support transparency in the navigation and status bars, but you need KitKat for that to work. And Google disabled it system-wide on the Nexus 10.
New cards:
Website update card
News topic card
What to watch card
Traffic incidents using Waze on maps.
Recurring reminders.
Real-time scores for rugby teams
See when your packages are ready for in-store pickup.
You can now bring back dismissed cards by pressing Undo.
Download
The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Take note: for the Google always listening you need two more things
The Google Experience Launcher and you have to set the default language to English US... Unfortunately and my Northern Irish accent just isn't compatible lol.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Won't Run on my JB 4.1.1
After installing those two file, Google Search and GEL. I can not run Google Home Launcher. "Unfortunately, Google Search has stopped".
And I already use English (US) as default language. Is that any solution for this?

Get Google Now-Like Search Features On Any Android Device Using GTalk
Original Thread At AddictiveTips.com
The latest iteration of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, was released in June this year with a plethora of feature enhancements and performance improvements. Besides introducing the Android world to Project Butter, a predictive keyboard, interactive & expandable notifications, auto-arrangement of home screen icons & widgets, and various other useful features, the OS brought with it faster and smarter search, and a super-intelligent search assistant called Google Now. Currently exclusive to Jelly Bean users officially and Ice Cream Sandwich users unofficially, Google Now is something that even the users of other mobile platforms will be itching to get their hands on. If you think that you might never be able to take advantage of said feature on your Android device as you are not one of the lucky few users to have received JB or ICS updates, think again. XDA member J_M_V_S has come up with the simplest of solutions that lets any Android user avail text-based Google Now-like search capabilities on their devices.
The best part about this particular solution is that it doesn’t require users to root their devices, flash ZIP files, install any apps or follow extensive how-to guides. Instead, all you need to do is add the chat bot [email protected] to your Android GTalk client’s contacts and you will be ready to benefit from Google Now-like quick, concise and informative answers on your Android device.

As is obvious from the above description, all you get with this particular tweak is a chance to communicate with the Google’s online servers to get answers to your queries. There are no fancy Google Now Smart Cards to feast your eyes on, nor do you get to tweak the search settings as per your personal preferences. Instead, it’s all plain text-based questions and answers.
You aren’t required to follow any specific syntax for your queries, but you can use short commands for convenience. For example, you may enter “how much is nine times nine” or “calculate 9 * 9″ or simply “9 * 9″ to get the same answer. The first example can be more useful if you’re using voice input on your keyboard to send queries. Following are some more commands if you’d prefer typing:
Score <team>
Weather <city>
Define <word>
Translate <word> or Translate <word> to <language>
Web <query>
Calculate <calculation>
Convert <units> into <units>
Convert <currency> into <currency>
For regular queries, you simply enter a keyword, and the GTalk bot will simply reply with pulling information from the most relevant source, such as Wikipedia, Google and other supported services along with a link to the source itself and other webpages relevant to your queries.
Once, again, the process is ridiculously simple. Just launch the Google Talk app on your Android, tap the add new contact button, key in ‘ [email protected]’, select said account from the contacts list and start posting your questions.

The slide-out navigation has been reworked with the latest hamburger-style guidelines in mind.

What the hell is hamburger-style guidelines? I like how the slide out navigation can be activated sliding anywhere on the page from left to right. IT's far better than Google+ where you have to swipe from the edge even though the content in the middle is not interactable by using a left to right swipe.
I absolutely hate Gmail and Hangouts where I accidentally swipe away a conversation.
Thanks op!
Note:
Running paranoid android in tablet mode allows swiping away the video in landscape mode, it's a neat idea, but not sure if it's thing to be very useful.... Time will tell.
I kind of preferred the old method of automatic screen rotate without enabling/toggling rotate on the phone, since I don't use phone apps in landscape mode much, so it worked fine to watch full screen landscape in video apps like YouTube/MX player.

EDIT 2 LINKS ARE DEAD. AMAZON PULLED 4.6.1
EDIT 3 Amazon started OTA OS rollout in Europe. Some Deutsche telekom and O2 UK customers confirmed update.
My System Updates says "No updates found". Any idea if they are rolling this out for everyone, or if there's a manual download link?

chalx, some apps from the amazon app store don't work after they are updated through google play. You may want to turn off google play auto update.

You are right, twitter, instagram, and few other "updated" apps are wiped from device

General This app lets you take back control over how Android 12 opens links

https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-fix-android-12-link-handling/
I don't really have a problem with Android 12's default behavior in this respect, but it's good to have options.
Among all the fantastic features and changes that Android 12 brings along, it also introduces some rather controversial changes. We have already talked about how Android 12’s new background app limitations can run havoc on apps like Termux. Another annoying change in Android 12 is the way it handles external links. If you’ve recently upgraded to Android 12, you probably would have noticed that when opening links, you no longer get that familiar “Open with” dialogue. Links will either automatically open in their corresponding apps or take you straight to Google Chrome or your default browser. If you’re not a fan of this change and want to restore the way things were in older Android versions, read on.
Starting with Android 12, Google now only allows “verified links” to be opened in external apps. Verified links allow app developers to ensure that only their app can handle links from their domain. If a link is non-verified, Android 12 will open it in the default browser, instead of showing you the app selection dialogue. But thankfully there’s an app called Better Open With that lets you get around Android 12’s new link handling behavior.
How to fix the handling of links on Android 12 with “Better Open With”
Download the “Beter Open With” app from the Play Store.
Now on your Android 12 phone navigate to Settings > Default apps > Browser app.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Set Better Open With as your default browser.
Now go to Settings > Default apps > Opening links and turn off the “Open supported link” toggle for every app that supports verified links.
That’s it. Now whenever you open a link, you’ll see the familiar Complete Action With dialogue listing out all the apps that can handle that link — just like in previous Android versions.
Even if you’re not running Android 12, “Better Open With” is still a great replacement for the system app chooser as it gives you more customizations and control.

Nice app. I've been using it for a couple of years and didn't see any difference when moved to A12 as the app is my "a must". That's why I was so surprised when I read the the news about A12 unusual link handling.
Happy to know I'm on the right side.
Thank you. very helpful for me 🤝🏼
AutoShare is excellent at customizing which app opens with fine grained Tasker control

General XDA Article: Google Play Store’s app installation progress is now visible on your home screen

https://www.xda-developers.com/play-stores-app-installation-progress-visible-on-home-screen/
My comment on it:
I'm not clear on if I can expect this if I don't opt to have my Home Screen / Launcher of choice to automatically add icons for newly installed apps to my Home Screen. For that matter, I'm wondering if this also depends on which launcher I use, or does it require custom launchers to implement anything on their end?

And 9to5google's article says:
Play Store install progress looks to be fully rolled out on Android 11+ devices (both Pixel and non-Google phones) we checked today (h/t Artem Russakovskii on Twitter). There were some reports of more users starting to see the capability a month or so ago, but wide availability only occurred in recent days.

Google Play Store’s app installation progress is now visible on your home screenWhen iOS users download an app, an icon of it appears on the home screen — with a progress circle reflecting its status. This behavior allows users to quickly check the status of apps that are actively downloading or installing on their iPhones. It appears that Google has finally caught up with the other platform. The company has started offering a similar indictor on Android 11+ devices. Users downloading an app from the Play Store can now see an indicator on their home screens that displays the installation progress.

As per a 9to5Google report, users running Android 11 or later on their phones should be able to see the new installation progress indicator when downloading apps from the Play Store. The execution is similar to that of iOS, featuring grayed-out icons and downloading/installing labels right below them. At the time of writing, the downloading label is cut off on some devices — as the screenshot above displays. Google will likely fix this bug in a future update.
The Play Store allows users to download only one app at a time. Those installing several apps simultaneously will see a pending label below queued apps. Interestingly, users are allowed to move the grayed-out icons before they’re actually installed. So they can customize their home screens without needing to wait. It’s worth noting, though, that these gray icons only appear on the home screen — and not on the main app list.
This addition is a very welcome one from the company. That’s because it gives a better visual of the progress, especially for those with a cluttered notification sheet. Users will no longer need to search for the sticky Google Play Store notification to check an app’s installation progress.
Do you see this change on you phone? If so, what version of Android are you running? Let us know in the comments section below.
