Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android and Apple devices. Brought to you by Google+.
Say more with photos, emoji, and animated GIFs.
See when people are together in Hangouts, when they’re typing, or whether they’ve seen your message.
Send and receive text messages (SMS/MMS) with Hangouts. Switch between SMS and Hangouts when messaging a friend. You can also do group MMS conversations.
Turn any conversation into a video call with up to 10 friends.
Message friends anytime, even if they're not connected right now.
Use Hangouts on computers, Android and Apple devices.
More Hangouts awesomeness:
Hangouts stay in sync across devices so you can start or continue them anywhere.
Choose from hundreds of emoji to help you make your point.
See what you talked about in the past, including shared photos and your video call history.
Get notifications just once. Once you see an alert, you won’t see repeats on your computer or other Android devices.
View collections of photos shared from each of your Hangouts.
Snooze notifications at times when you’d prefer to be undisturbed by alerts.
Quickly share a location with your friends
.
Notes:
Unlike Google Talk, Hangouts does not support "invisible" status.

hope this fixes the video chat crash on my girls S4.

Thanks for the linkage

Market version if installed from Play Store shouldn't be crashing, the one users that have been tryign to push/install manually. has had issues.
In my experiance. I don't like to link to to others, becuase its rude to the OP. But you can flash mine (Inverted) and I have had no issues what so ever.
You are required to have newest Play Services as well...

Gtalk vs G+ messenger

Hello,
What do think about them? I feel they are almost the same... can I disable talk and keep only messenger? Have any one tried that?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I wish G+ messenger had the same ICS style UI as GTalk . But on G+ you can text pics and use hangouts. The only thing I don't like about G+ messenger is there is no led notification which GTalk has.

I don't see why Google doesn't just unify all of its messaging services (Google voice/talk and g+ messenger) into one service. Hopefully that's where it's heading.

I've been talking about this with my friends for the longest time. The fact that GTalk can't send files is a kind of a huge issue for me as other wise its a great service. What I would love to see Google do is take a kind of Apple approach to it.. One messaging app that can text from your phones number or your Google voice number as you so designate, and, if the person your messaging is likewise using an Android 4.0.x and above platform, it would automatically send via data with higher limits to what you could send as opposed to text, and it would link to video calls and hangouts and such like GTalk and Messenger, can send files other than pictures.
Basically, one unified messenger to rule them all. I am not a huge apple fan, but I like the concept of iMessage and I know that if El Goog took the time to make it so, they could unify their services into one glorious messaging platform.

Unfortunately they are very different. Messenger is mobile only and requires the user have the G+ app but it does offer more features. GTalk allows you to message anyone on an Android or through the web on Gmail or G+. They really need to merge these messaging services into one as it is very confusing.

Google just bought Meebo so I would assume we will see some improvements in this area later this year or early next year at the latest. They have to know their current implementation is not very good.
I'm confused. The GTalk and GChat programs on a PC have been able to send files for years. And on the phone neither GTalk or G+ Messenger can send files, so I'm not sure where that comparison came from.
To share large files (or 300 photos) just toss them on Google Drive or Dropbox. I haven't checked, but there's also probably an app to take advantage of Wifi-Direct to "beam" it locally.
Also, G+ messenger doesn't have a standalone PC application. That is no good for unifying. I use the PC app at home/work, and phone app elsewhere. Having to keep your browser open to chat is a real nuisance IMHO.

However the GTalk client on Android does not allow for sending any files whatsoever. And while yes you could use drop box or drive or others as a workaround, what I'm saying is that including that support on the Android Platform app would be amazing. And a huge incentive to use it over regular texting.

Thanks. That would be nice to get this some traction. There were actually already some articles pointing out the issue but those faded away without any impact.
Nevertheless - it can't be ruled out that google is already working on this (*fingers crossed*)
I prefer Gtalk being left alone. Also I don't know why but Google keeps adding random people to my g+ messenger contact list. They are not on my circles either.

maybe you have added them as following? Had same problem but then I went to chat -> privacy settings and selected "my circles" and in g+ settings I selected only a few close circles as "my circles" and actually the list is waaay shorter (and is basically the same as in gtalk).

Just installed it, and people's numbers are listed. What happens if I send a message to one? Bearing in mind that Google Voice doesn't yet exist in the UK!
Really does seem like an huge gap. They talked about getting technology out of the way so you can get on with communication, but I still have two apps to send messages and pictures to other people!

Didnt want to make a new thread for this but since we are talking about apps and stuff announced at Google I/O. New updates for Google Play music and Google search are in the play store. Google Play Music looks COMPLETELY different.
It tried to verify my number, but I think that's a WhatsApp style link for others to find you.
However, my SIM reports my number as something else entirely because I ported a number over. So it couldn't verify me. Trying to talk to my network now, they're not answering...

I like the improvements too! I figured as much of a hot topic as Hangouts has been I might as well post the thread just in case someone forgot what today is lol. Like I said in the OP, I'm expecting it to die quickly - just a friendly PSA. But you are correct, probably didn't warrant a new thread but I've seen worse.

This is transitioning Talk into Hangouts so it may take a little time for everything to line up. At first I was being directed to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" that just said "open" on my device, and it looked like Talk. But then, after a dozen impatient refreshes, "open" changed to "update". Now Talk is labeled Hangout and has the new UI, but the icon is still Talk. Messages I am sending in Hangout on my phone are appearing in Talk in gmail on my comp right now.

If you are using a ROM where Talk is one of the system apps, you may need to uninstall it. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall it and then downloaded Hangouts from the Play Store.

If I'm understanding you right, you're trying to access Hangouts via the Gmail web interface. The Chrome Hangouts plugin does NOT replace the Talk box in Gmail. It adds an extra app, which is accessed by clicking the Hangouts icon on your Chrome toolbar.
The Gmail web interface will be rolled out later and will be upgraded from within Gmail itself.
Sideload mirrors as attached. (hangouts apk was too large for xda. reuploading...)

REQUEST: Restoring Google Talk in 4.3

Hi there!
Yesterday I received OTA update to 4.3 and discovered that Google Talk app was replaced by Hangouts. The latter is terribly bad app and I'd like to remove Hangouts and install Gtalk. Does anyone know how to restore Google Talk?
I'm tired of people saying that its "terribly bad"—you get text copying, images, emoji, simple group chats and read receipts with live notifications as to when people are writing. Its fantastic as to functionality—the only thing you lost is the ability to set a status. And perhaps one or two smaller features.
However, I don't want to sound just annoying, so is there any way in the built-in settings app to use uninstall updates after a system update such as this one? Considering you had Talk before, I'm assuming (and hoping) that it didn't overwrite the section that stores previously installed versions of that app.

Unfortunately I'm assuming that Google overwrite Talk with Hangouts. When you trying to uninstall hangouts you always go to ver. 1.0.2, not to GTalk.
You can't uninstall because the default is Hangouts. You can get a Talk.apk from older Google image and push it to system/app & remove Hangouts apk.

No, because it doesn't exist in 4.3 system partition so you can't revert to it like before and it can't be installed as a regular app. Sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree here. The sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better! Apparently they're adding screen-share soon, which was shown off at the Google event announcing ChromeCast and the New Nexus 7 (which seems awesome, by the way).

You are right, it's not terribly bad, it's "a piece of garbage".
It shows contacts from my SIM card. I keep said contacts hidden in the contacts App, yet Hangouts does't care (I am not going to have an hangout with my voicemail or with my operators's customer service).
It shows circles, but you cannot expand them. Do you remember who is in your circle of acquaintances? I don't.
It shows contacts only by name and you cannot expand them
Some of the contacts appear with the same name multiple times, maybe because they have more that one email address or because they are imported from different apps and there is no way to tell them apart.
Hangout tells you if a contact does not have access to hangouts and offers the possibility of inviting him/her (good). However you cannot hide said contact from the list or only show the ones that have hangouts
It doesn't show when contacts are online
So it is very understandable that people want to revert back to something that was working better at sending and receiving messages.
Yeah, you can do everything but see who's online you can IM with!! /sarcasm

GIF issue with Keyboard on Nougat 4.0.1

I updated to OOS 4.0.1 and since then I'm not able to use/send gifs on the keyboard while text messaging (see screenshot). I'm using Gboard and when I click on the gif key, it says "this text field does not support gif insertion from the keyboard". This is probably a nougat/keyboard issue rather than OOS but wondering if anyone else has seen this and how they fixed it. Googling did not return any working solutions.

The app needs to be supported to send GIFs.
Google search bar (won't work for me), Hangouts (works using latest version v15) and I don't use WhatsApp.
Their (OnePlus) stock apps becoming better, but they need to concentrate on fixing bug and issues and not adding new apps to their OS.
The new Weather app is completely useless. It uses Accuweather data and doesn't go deep into detail on the weather. So, I deleted it and using Accuweather instead.
By the way, OOS v4.0.2 should come out next week. I've seen 2 posts about it.

You may scroll/read through old messages in various topics/persons - not only last notifications from Whatsapp.
And yes I am also waiting to: view pictures, hear/respond voice messages - which I use intensively ( I hate typing )
The only user feedback I can see is it didn't work dated Sep 2019. Anyone tried the latest update? Does it work now? Developer should let us have a free trial version first, i.e. trial and buy.
Works for me. However I'm wondering how our data is being transferred. It's a modified WhatsApp web interface. Is it being all formatted by the watch or going through the Devs server
