Hi guys,
I've been meaning to install a remote security app on my GS2 and I was wondering what people are using out there.
Here is what I'm looking for:
- Free
- Wipe remotely
- Locate device via gps
- Lock remotely
- Reset to stock (I'm not sure if any app does that remotely)

me2, works awesome and is free..
I use prey and I guess lookout can do it to. They both have a free and paid version. I never had to use them and I haven't tried other app. So I am curious what the "pro's" have for me to enlighten me.
Samsung Dive does this for free.

As said above, Samsung Dive. It's built in so if someone steals your phone they're going to have a LOT harder time trying to get rid of it. Good luck!

But it doesn't work for flashed devices. Right?
That is a good question. I've tried locating my phone with Dive and there was no way it could find it.
So your question is still the same.
it works fine for me using Samsung Dive.. and my phone is rooted.. the only thing i cant do is unlock the phone..

What ROM are you running? Because I think you need Sammy stuff.
@jonny looks good might try it sometime.
I´m running the full version of Theft Aware.
IMHO it´s the greatest way to secure your phone and it´s not possible to make it better.

Hey all,
I have had some minor experience in unlocking and rooting my older android devices, but I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the current state of affairs. I just received a brand new nexus 7 and am trying to decide whether or not to unlock/root it.
I remember back with my Xoom as soon as I unlocked the boot-loader, Hulu stopped working. Is this still true? Are there any other side effects like that?

Some apps don't run if you're rooted. However, that's usually not for any technical reason; it's just because some app makers write a check for root into their apps and refuse to run if they find root. I don't know if Hulu is like that, but you might want to check if you have any apps that are like that. Alternatively, you can always unroot or use a hide root app to get around the app check.

Which Hide root app do you suggest ?
I was going to recommend OTA Rootkeeper, but apparently 4.3's security changes prevent it from working. As far as I can tell, it looks like you can't hide root on 4.3.
Can anyone confirm whether or not Hulu works with Root?

I use it a few times a week to watch stuff. Works fine on my rooted N7 with CleanROM and ElementalX kernel.
I don't see how I get all kind of errors when I try rooting this is it cuz I'm using winxp?

the one and only downside of rooting is you start suffering from ORD (Obsessive ROM-updating Disorder). I've been suffering it for past few months, and it seriously gets to my head sometimes.
Symptoms:
1) You feel like updating your ROM every day a nightly comes out, even if it is without any change. Just because it has a different incremental number.
2) You can't concentrate on studies, tv, movies, GFs, or even on your potty.
3) You dream about a new nightly every night after flashing current nightly.
4) You have titanium backup on your device.
Cure:
1) no cure.
I can't think of a single app that doesn't work with while rooted. It used to be Google Movies didn't work, but that's no longer the case.
Rooting isn't a big deal. The worst part is that it resets your devices to stock, so backup first.

Sky Go! doesn't and so far there appears no work around. Unless someone has heard something!
I had some gps lock on issues after rooting, but now that its rooted I can edit the gps.conf and fix issues.

Okay, this may be a bit of a noobish thread, but rooting is a thing I don't have much experience or knowledge in. I've been using an M8 for a few months and I'm just trying to figure out how to make it a more personal experience. I have downloaded Tasker but I still need to look at guides and FAQ's on it before I start playing with it. Back to the thread title, why should I root? I know I can play with ROM's, kernels, and what not when I root. But I'm still unfamiliar with what I'm actually doing when I do that. I'm not 100% sold on changing the ROM on my M8 because I was watching a video for Cyanogen on an M8 and you lose the double tap to unlock functionality and the video stated that most ROM's will lose that functionality. I happen to use it quite often so I'm a bit leery of letting it go. So more specifically my question is, what can do I with rooting? What do different kernels do? What can I do with rooting if I don't change the ROM or kernel? I'm hoping I can find out if rooting is something I want to do or not with my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well that's pretty much exactly why I want to know what all I can do with rooting and what those things actually do. So I can decide if rooting is something I want to do.
adaway is the major reason why i root, and xposed.
Well there is only so much you can do on a device without making changes to its system. Kinda like a computer, Windows & Linux. How many things can you install and/or change without Administrator Privileges / Super User?
Heck these days you need Administrator privileges for updates on some games. Almost anything cool will HAVE to make some changes to the system in order to work properly.
Xposed Framework
Titanium Backup
Root explorer - <Name already says it all.
Six axis controller - You need root in order to connect your PS3 remote to your phone in order to play games with a controller.
Tasker - Like mentioned before.
Ad block Plus - Who really wants to look at ads the whole day?
Greenify - To hibernate all those excessive apps and save up some battery juice.
Better Batter Stats / GSAM with Root Companion - Get some detailed info on your what drains your battery(Wake locks etc)
WiFi Tethering - Pay for it through Carrier or Free with root?
Has the writing to external issue been fixed with latest android phones? If not you'll probably need Root to make changes to the permissions in order to write to external SD card.
The questions really isn't right... It's not "Why should I root? " it's "Why shouldn't I root? " Like I mentioned above you can't really do anything to the device if you don't have the permission/authority to do so and some of the best stuff out there needs to make changes to the system. When last did you install an awesome program on your computer without having to grant it administrative privileges
That list I gave is small one in a huge list of cool things you can install and/or do if you're rooted.
Then of course next it'll be... Why should I go with S-OFF
Completely stock - Human - you only do what they want you to do.
Rooted - Demi-God - you make your own choices on what you want and what you don't.
S-OFF - God Mode. Enough said.
Being able to disable data at the firewall for everything except those apps that actually need Internet access is a godsend if you don't have a large data plan. I use DroidWall, but Android Firewall is coming along as well.
Then, add in Adaway, being able to completely remove CarrierIQ, and disable unnecessary services, it's more a question of why wouldn't you root? However, I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to my phones.

I think most of the benefits of rooting have already been stated, but what about the trade-offs?
Well, there are simply no trade offs unless you use an app that won't work with root, like Barclays Bank UK. Unless you use any app that won't work with root...
About double tap to unlock, you will only lose it if you use any aosp Rom, you will still have it if you use a stock based rom like ARHD or Venom

Personally I wouldn't bother rooting unless you have a specific must have or must not have problem with the M8.
Every phone i've had now i've rooted, unlocked etc, and I always go back to the same thought, why did I bother.
Personally I think it just has you wiping and reinstalling all the time and not getting on with things. Flashaholic I think is the term lol.
I also think my M8 functioned better stock. Smoother and with better battery life.
Personal opinion though. When I get my Z3, i'll be leaving it stock, ready for the M9 lol.

I'm actually still running stock right now, and taking OTA updates. I just refuse to give up my control of iptables and the HOSTS file. If there was a non-root way to setup these things, I would probably not bother either. On my last phone, a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, I rarely messed with the OS once I get everything setup the way I wanted it. It was running stock firmware the whole time, just with DroidWall and Adaway running on it.
The only thing I did that deviated from that was backing up applications and restoring on new devices. For example, I wanted to preserve my progress in Alchemy, so I backed it up with Titanium Backup, moved the Tibkp file to my new phone, and restored the data. No having to manually redo everything
IOW, root doesn't have to mean "total makeover".

So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?

It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.

Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.
Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

I had no idea that existed or was possible without root. Great find!
Has anyone tried to see what works with some bloatware disabled & what doesn't work? Personally I would like the iris scanner and samsung pay to be enabled and everything else disabled.

Glad to hear it,arguably the best feature available for any Samsung device,short of root/ROMs.

I'm rather confused by this thread. Is the poster asking what will 'break' if you disabled all the bloatware? Or asking something else entirely? Cause you can disable everything that comes on any phone and it'll always work just fine.
And I have no idea what Android 7.0 would have to do with bloatware, or what KNOX would have to do with bloatware...

I can't speak for the O.P.,but,my guess is, as with me, just making sure that it works before purchasing the Note 7,especially for those of us with the Snapdragon powered versions that may have no other way to disable bloat.
JMHO, but, the Q&A regarding functionality of PDP, whatever they may be, are of merit & might as well have a thread addressing the subject.
Most realize you can disable the bloat, but,not everyone, including yours truly, understand exactly how it works & why only on Samsung devices.
The Knox tie-in makes sense to me, even without a full understanding of how it works.

KNOX doesn't make much sense to me, because that's just a security platform. It just makes sure you protected from being 'hacked' per say. As in like, it adds an extra layer of security over your phone so someone can't just pick it up and plug it into a computer to gain access to all of your stuff. Though thats only the very loosest of analogies.
But I have to ask what you exactly mean by the "not everyone understands exactly how it works and why only on Samsung devices". Do you mean as in why disabling works? or something else. Because you can disable the bloatware on any android phone so long as the carrier and manufacturer didn't lock the option out. Which most devices will let you do it now because of the whole 'you'll get sued for forcing users to use a specific thing without giving them a way out' (an example would be microsoft getting sued over the bundling of Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office with the earlier Windows OS's).
What I'm wondering is, based on the title of the thread after thinking about it some, does the OP mean an app that disables/uninstalls bloat? Because I'm sure there are plenty of apps out there that do it. But most I think require Root in order to do it properly and reliably. I use Sprint for my service, and its Sprint ID and such are a pain in the ass, and they can't just be 'disabled' easily even though there is the option to (every time you disable it, Sprint just re-installs it the next time you reboot the phone because it thinks it got uninstalled somehow). But to get it to disable properly on my Note 5, I had to install some random app that I think was called App Quarantine. It looked like a bio-hazard symbol for the icon. I haven't re-installed it since this last wipe I was forced to do, so I can't remember exactly lol. But it was the only one that would let me actually disable the Sprint ID stuff and not have it re-install all the time.

Yes it's an app in the Google Play Store that has the ability to disable literally anything on Samsung devices,WITHOUT ROOT, so, care must be taken to not get carried away & I recommend only disabling, not deleting, in the event of not being able to take an update otherwise.
Not everything can be disabled natively, so, that explains the appeal of the app.
If you used it, you'd see the tie-in with Knox........

Then that makes alot more sense. I originally just thought they were basically asking if there was an app to disable everything instead of having to do it manually. I've always just manually disabled everything cause its not that hard to do. Just find the troublesome things and hit that disable button lol. But if this can do it all in one quick swoop, then I'm all in =O I'll definitely be looking into it later today when my phone finally arrives...
Sprint screwed up my pre-order, and is sending me the wrong device, so I have to take it into a store to get it exchanged because they refused to cancel my pre-order or change the order at all even though I legitimately ordered the dang thing 2 minutes past midnight on the 3rd. So ontop of that, they also didn't ship the phone when they said they would, AND the put restrictions on my package. I normally have to physically go to a UPS location to pick up my packages cause the dumb driver will never deliver to my house... always states that they can't find my house even though its the ONLY house down the ONLY long driveway... heck you can SEE my house above the trees! But nope, the guy wont deliver. But because of the restrictions, UPS wont let me flag the package as 'hold for pickup' like usual, so I gotta stand at the end of my drive way for hours upon hours just to catch the UPS driver. Then I gotta drive all the way into town to HOPEFULLY exchange the phone for the Black Onyx variant that I was supposed to get...
Anyway, sorry for the ramble o-o; didn't realize it was that long XD

It's a nice tool to have, a powerful one.
Just a friendly piece of advice :
Read up on it before using, check the FAQs on the developers site if need be & go conservative at 1st if you're not familiar with what is safe to disable.
The app gives color-coded guidelines per each app on what is known to be safe to disable. You can go above and beyond that, but, mainly, just disable, do not delete anything & leave the stock keyboard alone.
You might be able to disable the stock launcher, provided you have another one installed, but, I'd leave it alone until you're certain one way or the other........

Lol I'd only disable the things I already know I need to disable. Like all the Sprint stuff. I leave the Samsung stuff alone cause I actually use alot of Samsung's things. But as for Sprint's stuff? All of that goes bye bye lol. Now that is assuming it doesn't somehow show things that you normally can't see from the applications manager. In which case then I wouldn't bother, cause I don't see much of a point lol.

I'm guessing Samsung still has a partnership w/Cheetah Mobile,which is one of the main reasons I like having this app,Package Disabler Pro,on-board to ward off the data mining/crapware/etc...
However,I'm not seeing anything in the apps,system or otherwise,that's jumping out & identifying itself as CheetahMobile/CleanMaster/etc.......
I'm guessing it's some/all of the apps identified w/the "Smart" moniker,but,I'm not 100% certain on that.
Anyone have an idea on which,if any,of the apps are actual CheetahMobile bloatware?

Using EZ Disabler here. Works well, but you gotta be careful using "disable bloat" part as it will turn off many useful things. I just went through and picked what i wanted. Very Easy to use though

Why would you guys use an app for disabling stuff.
Since we're on xda, enable USB debugging and use pm (package manager) cmd from adb shell.
For instance: adb shell pm hide 'package'
There are other interesting options: list, install, uninstall.

I see your point, but i would also say there is a ease to the app though. Whatever works best for people. Im just glad there are options.
