3G query - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi
Been using a note 2 for 12 months now and quite frankly am bored stiff.
Also to add insult to injury I am on 3 mobile network who in their wisdom have a funny SIM rule whereby a phone sim cannot be used in a tablet.
The result is data being blocked to the device.
I plan to end the contract early and go to a new carrier.
So can I have a show of hands please.
What network can this device be used on as a phone
Thanks for your input
Lee

I'm on Three too, but a tablet contact. Amazing speed and coverage but can't include calls or texts in the package, which is silly.
As to other networks you're likely to needed a tablet/data contact to avoid a similar fate. Giffgaff is a good bet but I'd definitely contact whomever you choose first to confirm.

Have you actually tried? I've used my 3 SIM in my Note 1, 2, 3, 8.0 3G and my 10.1 3G (when I had it) all worked fine?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk

They will work but eventually Three work detect that the device you're using isn't a phone and cut off data. They check IMEI numbers.

But it IS a phone albeit a large one
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app

I agree it is a phone...Samsung should get involved as it could lose potential customers from buying such device but cant if there tied into 3.
I personally am willing to buy out of remaining 12 months and go to new carrier than continue using a note 2 which am very bored of...
This rule is just so outrageous 3 would need to get 100s or even thousands of complaints to remove this...but then how many people want to use a note 8 or any other tablet as a phone...not many ide say

To those who we're terminated from Sprint...

I just got my warning letter in the mail!!
How long did it take after the warning for you to be fully terminated? I'm getting excited lol I got mine for voice roaming not data if it matters
I seriously hate carriers who do stuff like this.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
Took a few months for me. Letter just popped up in the mail giving me 60 days to port my number. I had a family plan, only one line was roaming, but I was able to move every line without penalty.
So if I have 2 numbers would both be cancelled? The letter only mentioned mine
Good way to get out of a fixed contract, wish my carrier terminated my 2 year contract, I'm stuck with poor service an data speeds with my current provider for another 6 months until it ends.
I left Sprint in the 14 day trial period before they got the chance to do this to me... I was on Verizon half the time anyway so I just went back to Verizon.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Wow I'm confused, how are you getting terminated for voice roaming? Why wouldn't they just charge you for it? Never had Sprint before.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Last month I had 7 gigs, the month before that I had 8 gigs and right now I have 4 gigs.
Sprint hasn't sent me a love letter yet. Maybe they don't care anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I got terminated for the same thing a few years ago, then a week ago, I got a call from a collection agency saying I owed sprint money because I canceled early even though they canceled me lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
My understanding was they DO charge a $350 ETF even though they canceled the contract.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Not that I've ever heard. Reading the threads here there is not ETF since you're not the one terminating it willingly
I believe they dont terminate you with a warning letter. You get a letter saying you violated the contract and they give you 30 or 60 days to switch. I also think they allow you to port that number. Other accounts on the line are still active just that number gets terminated. Idk if you keep the device though.

They did, and its harder to roam heavy on GSM due to the lack of company's on that network.

Note 8 lte phone apps?

I'm with at&t and am going to get the note 8 lte, which are the best apps to make phone calls, and also a video call?
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium
I heard that the at&t n5120 cant make phone call simply by putting in a sim. Can your note make phone calls the same way your phone works without using any app ? If no then the only app that works for me and free is viber. Gg talk was good but now it is dead

The i467 does not have the phone software, you are correct.
I use GrooveIP for voice over Google Voice and Hangouts for the rest.

happy to see someone using dell streak now...
Dell streak 5 was an amazing device.... Very poorly marketed... Dell would have been in a different part of the economics had they done a good job...
Yes,that's what me and my brother have always thought,Dell had it right before anyone else, now everyone is making the same size, they didn't advertise it,so no one knew about it. Its still a great phone,I've had mine for 2 1/2 yrs.,I wish Dell would have made the streak 2,opus 1?. I haven't upgraded in 8 months because there hasn't been anything I've wanted alot more yet.I'm still on Froyo and would like to move up to Jelly Bean though: ),I will get the note 8,and still looking at phones, note 3,z ultra,...ect. . . I like the Lenovo k900,but don't know if that would work with at&t.

Dialer App?
I have a ATT Galaxy Note 8 with a wireless data plan. It clearly has a micro-SIM and a LTE modem.
Really, all I think it needs is the actual Dialer app. Which leads me to the question: how would I install it?
I know that in some european markets the Note 8 has phone capabilities... would it be simpler to flash a euro image onto it?

If you are getting the Note 8 with the intention of using it as your primary phone, I'll chime in and say I haven't been happy with the quality of VoIP on AT&T's HSPA network. Your results may be better with LTE, but I think there is something about AT&T's network that makes it less suitable for VoIP than Verizon. I don't know for sure, I'm speculating based on what I've experienced.

Thanks y'all, I will be looking into this,I would send text messages on it mostly, and also having the ability to make a call would be nice too,I will reply on how it does when I get it and start trying things out!

I used groove ip, and made a phone call and it sounded great!! It was real clear, now im just going through google voice settings trying to receive calls, I'm using Talkatone too, in google voice you have a different number that people see when you call, it says you can port-use your cell number, but it cost $20 to do it, which I think I'm going to end up doing, just still trying to receive calls, it says to click on make a new number in google voice, then make sure forward calls is checked,...I think I'll get the receiving calls working soon: )..also the sending text are working!

What a big let down, you can imagine I just got it today (Note 8.0 LTE) the whole time I thought this is one big phone/tablet that will let me use it as a phone because of the SIM card slot and 4g and LTE abilities!! Only to find out that only international version can make calls!! WTF!! Hope to try your ways otherwise I am hoping someone will come up with a rom that enable this feature for good!
It'll work as a phone great, I just called my Dad today and had him call me back on talkatone, and it sounds great, also groove ip too, just get the app, then go on your computer to google voice and get a google voice number, it let's you scan through a bunch, just pick one and follow the steps, it sounds better than using my cell phone on speaker!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I467 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Why not just return it and buy the N5100? VoIP calling works well over a strong signal, but is LTE really worth it when a phone version is available?

Awesome news for T-Mobile!

A little bird told me starting on the 28th JUMP will no longer have a 6 month (180 day) waiting period to upgrade! You will also be able to upgrade an UN-Limited number of times per year!
Also, the international calling plan will change for the better, allowing better rates for calling to cell phones. I'll update this when I learn more.

Wow...talk about never ending EIP balance.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Trust me, I'm aware. But hey, to each their own!
The catch is you have to have paid 50% of your eip balance. It's actually worse than every 6 months. People already signed up for jump are granfathered in unless they stop and restart JUMP.

You are almost right, T-Mobile will only pay off half of the EIP balance. So you are right, but just a little off.

I would say the first part about the Jump program is true but not the 2nd. It would be a bad business model and money loser for T-Mobile to allow any and everyone to upgrade unlimited times a year. The only way I could see this happen is if they reward their customers who have been here through all the BS like me, Ive been with T-Mobile since 2003, but I doubt it.
Well you can keep your grandfathered features, but customers always have unrealistic expectations. Not saying that yours are. And I would read post #6 in this thread, it kinda helps explain how the changes work. I honestly prefer the original JUMP plan.

The terms have not been finalized as per TMOBILE. What was posted/leaked was a rough draft. Noting is set in stone yet

Appears that the initial jump program might be better.

This is per management at T-Mobile. This will be happening, you will be able to keep your old JUMP plan if you wish, however.

So 2 questions...
1 is the 50% cost based on price new or current value?
2 will grandfathered customers be required to enter the new terms upon a JUMP into a new phone with EIP?

It would be half of purchased price.
Well I would assume not, if an account already has JUMP on it, we upgrade your phone through a separate system built for JUMP. If I find out differently I'll update the thread accordingly.

My understanding is that there will be more free countries to call from mobile to mobile, and better rates in general. This is how it was explained to me.

Those using a 3g/4g dongle

Greetimgs Tab 3 community,
I recently picked up a T110 and was looking to pick up a dongle so I could use it as my primary phone since my Note II has a cracked screen and it's only a matter before the digitzer snaps and the phone becomes a paperweight. The problem I am running into is the prepaid plans for the dongles have ridiculously small amount of data so I figured I'd come to the xda community and see what others are using.

Yes. Haven't tried it though.
As for OP's question... I really don't get US (or anywhere that uses same scheme) internet service with all the data caps etc lol maybe look for another way/service to get your internet?

Can I add a second phone number to my phone?

Hey guys, I have a T-Mobile galaxy s3 and I want to add a second phone number to my phone for business instead of getting a second phone. Right now I am using groove IP which works most of the time, but I would like something more reliable. I don't mind paying for another service to get this working if that's what needs to be done, but I do want to be able to know if it is a business call opposed to personal.
1) Is this possible?
2) If so, will I be able to distinguish business calls frompersonal calls before I answer?
