I noticed as soon as I turned my Nexus on today that there was a line across the screen that looked like dirt under the display.
It is only noticeable on low brightness but the auto brightness set the phone to minimum when I turned it on so I saw it. I can only also see it on bright backgrounds like the forum - it is not visible on dark backgrounds or the home screens.
Does anyone else have this issue? I will return it soon and get it replaced but I am wondering if this is widespread or I was just unlucky.
Try turning the brightness right down and looking at this page and see if you see any lines/marks under the glass.
I have a line as well but it's quite small so I'm not really bothered.

Few very feint lines here too. Setting phone to fixed second lowest brightness setting and they vanish though.
This issue is on the gs2's too.

I can also see two faint grey vertical lines on either side of the screen if I have a light (white) background and brightness settings 1-3!
I haven't come across any other issues, I only noticed it after reading this thread and now its in bugging me. But I love the handset.. better than I expected!
Are these lines normal or do I have a duff handset? I have a couple of weeks to change it if necessary but I am also aware of the stock availability due to high demand.
Anyone else in same situation (O2 UK handset)?
I have the same issue on the lowest brightness, but not on the highest. It is also very faintly noticeable on my SGS2 on the lowest brightness. On my Omnia 7 (samoled) it is also very visible on low brightness, I think it is an amoled thing.

Exactly even the iphones with it's tinting issues SGS2 with it's Blotches in the dark
and the glass isn't perfect around the bezel
people just look for this stuff
I don't understood if this lines means defective screen or if all phones will have this lines.
I have the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus. I guess it's just a thing with Super Amoled screens, rather than a defect.

+1 Just as I said in my post above I have 4 amoled screen devices and they all it to some effect. Do not worry, your phone is fine.
could someone please post a picture so i can see what you guys are talking about? i'm curious to see what it looks like since i don't notice this on the samoled screen on my nexus s.
I had that issue with 2 evo screens. I would also get dead pixels or blotches.. Just have to get lucky with one I guess.

why is fine if it seems to have a problem?
do you think that it is normal to have lines on the screen?

I have the same thing on minimum brightness. Its best seen by using a white image as wallpaper and having nothing on your far left and far right home screens. I have many vertical lines. When I scroll the home screen all the way over to the left until I see the blue gradient appear, the gradient varies in shades exactly where the lines are.
I noticed it as soon as i first powered on the device, same as the OP, as it was set to minimum brightness but I dont generally notice it any other time. I dont recall having the same problem with my galaxy S2
I have a diagonal line that runs along the width of the display it runs at a slight angel, it can be only seen with the display set a its lowest setting and running a black image in a very dark room. I have taken the phone back to three (solihull) who after 3 goes of trying to see it are aware of the problem and acknowledged it. They checked their demo phone which didn't have the problem. They have contacted their Samsung rep who I am awaiting a call from.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
This is normal with AMOLED displays.
the thing is, my GS2 doesnt have this "problem" on the lowest screen brightness.

That said, i've already accepted the fact that everyone else has some variation of this "issue" but im more curious on what the Samsung rep has to say about it. I'm also curious if its more visible on some devices as opposed to others.
I put my brightness on a static settings so it doenst effect me much (I can see it a bit on dark grey backgrounds) but i'm just imagining people who use auto brightness cause there's NO way you can miss it on whites/greys
you must have a magic Galaxy S II then, because it is a known issue with AMOLED screens when running at low brightness.

honestly, anyone would be able to spot it out if you saw them in person.
Either my GS2 doesnt have the issue, or its VERY hard to see. I took long hard looks because i was really debating if my Nexus was defective - if this is just how it is then im willing to accept it - i just want to make sure we're not part of some funky batch

It may be a known issue, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable. I've not experienced any issues like this on either of my Fascinates. I'd certainly return mine if there were any screen issues.

I understand the artefacts you mean but this is a single bar about 3mm thick its not dead pixels like the three store suggested otherwise it wouldn't matter about the brightness it almost looks like something is pressing gently against the screen. I have tried to photograph it but my camera/me are not the best.

yeah its pretty much like that
it's like...grainy with weird colours. I wouldnt say i see any thick LINES, instead it reminds me of throwing paint on a wall and letting it slide down. I'll try and take a picture tonight with some high res camera so you guys can hopefully see what im talking about
unfortauntely its not so easy for me to get a return since im in canada and i bought mine through Handtec in the UK - im pretty sure RMA-ing is a huge hassle and wait, plus im not sure if i have to pay for the shipping

Its not like that on mine.
lol i took that pic with my G2x, its not as extreme as that in real life.
An OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit light in response to an electric current.
It;s Organic. Each row of organic pixels may have slightly different tolerances to voltage than the next, hence you get dark and lighter rows varying to different degrees on different screens.
By all means take a chance and see if a replacement is all the same tolerances with no darker or lighter lines or if it has lots of them and looks like a striped screen. I don't think its a "defect" as such, its just a "characteristic" of AMOLED. If they wanted Samsung could measure the tolerance of each OLED to a very accurate level and there would be no dark or light lines on any screen. It would be very expensive though, so they fall into a catagory of acceptable or not.
Thats just my opinion by the way.
edit: Im actual glad so many others are questioning this too. I feel less pedantic now. lol

Bear in mind that any replacement you get may in fact have a worse screen. I was lucky when I got my replacement phone (replaced due to volume bug, nothing to do with the screen) and my screen was luckily better. You may not be so lucky.

well i just got my nexus today and as expected noticed a small transparant line running down with screen with auto brightness / low brightness. So i turned it of and manualy set to around 55 60% defintly cant notice it now just bummer cant use auto brightness .... will have to see how battery holds out like this as i luv this phone
Watching Netflix or anything in full screen it's noticeable. Very noticeable. After one week of owning it about a month ago, I saw a similar topic and thought "this would never happen to me". Fast forward a month later, I have it. And a scratch on my screen after putting it in my pocket only with nothing else in it.

By nav bar, do you mean the notification/status bar? If so, I know exactly what you're talking about. The static cyan text is a burn-in waiting to happen. I noticed a little bit of cyan tint in that area when brightness is low and the screen is white. It's by no means that bad at all but I use the hide the status bar option in ADW to prevent it from getting worse. 2 months later and it hasn't gotten worse.

By nav bar they mean the soft keys (Home - Menu - Recent - Back) buttons on the bottom.
Oh, in that case I haven't seen that problem but I have heard of people with it. You can get rid of those soft-keys with custom mods too that makes your phone full-screen.
I noticed this on my Gnex as well. Rotating the screen clockwise to a landscape orientation, the left side of my screen where the soft buttons were has a notably bluer tint. For the record, I keep my screen on auto, which I was hoping would reduce the burn-in effect. Setting the screen brightness to 100% seems to hide the burn-in. Dunno if that will always be true.
Even worse, when I did a screen compare of my previous Nexus vs the display model at the Verizon store back in early Jan, the demo model's screen was noticeably dimmer and off color even at full brightness. Seemed like running in torch mode 24/7 with a bright red background caused the screen to degrade noticeably after only a week or so.

The only time I notice any sort of image retention (relating to the notification bar) is when I first open the XDA app and it quickly goes full screen. Other than that I never see it. However, I commonly see image retention going from home screen to Market but it fades very quickly.

Mine as well as my friend's has burn-in at the top and bottom where the status bar is and the soft buttons. Also my old nexus S as well as my friend's has burn in at the top status bar. It's inevitable I guess...
I started seeing this too but i quickly switched to transparent top and bottom bars so that those pixels got even wear, and it actually reversed my burn in mostly. My screen is near perfect now.

The leds that are not used as much as the rest of the screen will appear brighter giving you the impression that it is burn in. On the first gen amoled's some would leave and entire white screen on full brightness overnight to normalize or calibrate the leds. Doesn't bug me one bit though.

Exactly right. But the term burn in is so familiar to people it will likely never change.
I forgot to say that to eliminate this burn in i also use full screen browser at all times to hide the status bar. And i consistently rotate the screen to different views while i read my webpages to give the other pixels a rest. The effect is excellent.
To test this the best, install dead pixel detect from market and toggle thru every color. Rotate the screen too to see both areas. The color red is the only one that shows the burn in for me. Which is strange cause blue is the weak color that wears out the quickest. But my blue looks fine.
This will probably happen to all of us to some degree sooner or later.
The image retention that lasts 1-3 seconds we might see within a month or two usage is actually one of the characteristics of AMOLED "Ghosting effect"
which is not the same as AMOLED "reverse led fatigue" (or although technically incorrect but more widely understood term "Burn-ins") which maybe seen as permanent image retention shown as yellowish outlines of icons / keyboard outlines, etc.
Sadly, there's really nothing you can do about this problem after the fact, except to change the screen itself if it is really bothersome. Or you may try to change/delete/make transparent of the permanently placed icons/other objects/pictures to try to reverse these effects.
The only preventive measures would be changing screen rotation from vertical to horizontal, and make sure you don't have the screen on at a stay still image (preferably set auto screen off to 30seconds or so.)
It is humorous how particular many people are about "pocket" screens. Oled technology in reality is like the merger of lcd and plasma screens. And oled does get image retention and burn in similar to plasma. It is harder to avoid on a cell phone with so many possibilities of static images. Really though, it is good to mention/complaint about it so it gets attention and oled manufacturers try to improve upon the technology and try to minimize or get rid of the issues altogether. Many people still think plasmas get burn in very easily and that is far from the truth. The last 3 years or so Panasonic and Samsung have made great strides in minimizing the possibility and you see very few complaints about it. And it is even more humorous that many people think lcd technology is better for viewing because it is newer than plasma when the exact opposite is true. LCD technology is older than plasma, and aside from power usage and weight, lcd doesn't have many benefits over plasma. And because of the post processing to try and overcome the deficiencies of lcd viewing lcd screens are closing the gap in power consumption with plasma. But yeah, all you can do about the image retention of oled now is put pressure on samsung and lg and any newcomers to the technology to improve it. Hopefully, oled will overcome its shortcomings to lcd and plasma and be the better tech out of all three in the near future. I wish they made laptops with plasma screens. That would be an awesome option for laptop users that use theirs as desktop replacements like myself.

All my pixels are fine but I notice the notification bar retention on brown with the XDA app and I notice the bottom (whatever it's called bar) on grey from the app you suggested. Either way, I still love the phone!!!

Yea, That's Samsung for you. I was lucky not to have any on my device. And from the looks of it, it isn't too common on the Note 2014.
The Nexus 10 though. Wow. Everyone had it. It wasn't a question of if you have it or not, it was about how bad. Not to mention the blacks were blue.
I'd exchange it if I were you, no point in getting stuck with that.

Mine just came today and with my normal brightness setting there is only the slightest hint of bleed from one of the four LED spots on the bottom of the screen.
My panel seems perfect so far so it doesn't seem likely I will exchange it over this.
I'm pretty impressed, but I have to say the build quality is not up to par with my IPad and not what I would expect at this price. Samsung has a long way to go to produce really premium products.

I would like to see one iPad without a light bleed. So far a few I saw (including 2 which belong to my wife) had some light bleed as well. What is wrong with build quality of your unit? Mine, except for light bleed, is very good.
I think my tablet has very very slight bleed at the bottom of the screen near both capacitive buttons, I won't return it because it's barely noticeable BUT does this mean the whole screen has an issue and also could it deteriorate over more usage or anything like that.
Apologies if these are idiotic questions but this "screen bleed" is a completely new subject for me lol.

I think my light bleed is actually getting worse and I am thinking about exchanging it now that there is more stock available.
One of the spots on the bottom is about 1 cm, and while viewing movies it is a nuisance.

This was my worry, my screen has slight light bleed at the bottom nothing too noticeable but then again don't all LCD screens have some form of light bleed
Writting from my third Note 10.1 2014. The first one had a huge dust particle under the screen and bad bleeding. The second one had a bearable bleeding but at least 7 bad pixels (3 dead ones right in the middle of the screen and 4 stuck). This Note 10.1 has almost non- existent bleeding and just one little dust particle (invisible if you are not looking for it) but has yellow tint along the bottom edge (over the buttons) and at the bottom left corner, so when you are reading in portrait mode over white background it is impossible not to get distracted as you start one line with black over white and you finish it with black over yellow.
I truly love this device but I am getting tired of all of this. My third replacement is on its way, though I seriously doubt it is going to be a good one.

I'm on my third device and 2 of them have had lightbleed. I can't say for the first one though because the screen was dead on arrival. I think everyone should expect some lightbleed on any LCD screen. If your tablet is perfect in every other aspect other than a little screen bleeding then I wouldn't exchange it. There are too many things that can be messed up other than the screen such as S-pen detection, loose speaker grills, dead pixels, dead screens, faulty bluetooth, and the list goes on...
I have a 32bg black model and my GF has a white one, both bought at BB at about the same time. There is quite a lot of difference between the screens, mine has quite a bit of light bleed on the upper right and all across the bottom - you can see the individual leds - hers does not. However my screen is quite a bit brighter and much more "white," in side by side comparison hers looks a bit yellow. All of the screen settings are exactly the same. Last night we had them both on for 3+ hours of internet and point-and-click gaming, I had 80% power remaining while she had 56%, checking hers I noticed the brightness was at 100 while mine was around 25%. She says it needs to be that high to see the game and it does seem much darker/mudier than mine. Thinking these must have different panels because they look so different. So, light bleed or dim yellow battery eating screen, are these our options?
The pictures were taken with an iPhone 5S (flash off). The tablet's brightness was maxed and as you can see, the room was dark. Does this degree of backlight bleed warrant a return (mainly concerned of the tablet's longevity. Thoughts appreciated.

The picture isnt very clear as its difficult to take a picture of properly but if the points I have highlighted are the only bit of screen light bleed you have then yeah its normal, I have pretty much identical bleed points too as do most people on here.

And I'm inclined to agree with your observation. In particular, those are indeed the points of bleeding.
What do you make of the top corners being so bright, though? It's not like the points you've highlighted, but rather large areas -maybe this is where the light comes from?
In all honesty, I'm more concerned about future degradation than anything else. If the device is going to remain as is, I don't mind the current state of bleeding. But if this is an indication that the device will be noticeably worse in a few months down the road, then I'd like to take it back to the shop and exchange it.

No problem mate.
From what I understand Lightbleed comes from the points it's visable - it's just that for whatever reason the device doesn't block the light passing through hence the brighter areas along the bottom. And about degradation from what I have read it doesn't get worse or better just stays like that.
It depends on you if you want to give it back and keep trying to get a bleedless device but as some form of Lightbleed is common on LCD's it will be tough. I returned one due to high Lightbleed which was visable in a lit room and the brightness on low - that's bad Lightbleed and I couldn't accept that so I got the one I have now and the Lightbleed for me is more than acceptable. Plus the other problem is if your device is perfect apart from the bit of Lightbleed your next one could have other issues LOL.

And on that note, I'll be sticking with this one.
I've notice the screen will smear/lag behind while displaying "true" black (pixels are off) areas of the screen in fast motion (pictures, backgrounds, etc...). I'm sure this is a common problem with this display type as I've read similar things before (purple or black), but wanted to make sure all is well on my expensive new toy. It seems to happen more when the brightness is turned down, but it can also be noticed heavily on gradient backgrounds while scrolling left/right on the home screen. Turning up the brightness does resolve the issue for the most part (you can still see it, but it goes away much quicker), but why is it so apparent on this display versus others (Galaxy S5)? Maybe having many more pixels to flip on and off in the affected area is the cause due to the phone having a 2k display versus the 1080p display of the Galaxy S5. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Yep. I too have the exact same issue. I wonder what the consequences will be when using thw Gear VR with our Note 4... probably weird smushy images I'm guessing
I've had this issue as well. I was on a Plane at night watching Dark Knight Rises. I have auto brightness on so it dims in lower lighting but in that movie there's a lot of dark scenes and you can def see the lag with the pixels during fighting scenes and fast movement.

I'm sure this is a common problem with this display type as I've read similar things before (purple or black), but wanted to make sure all is well on my expensive new toy. It seems to happen more when the brightness is turned down, but it can also be noticed heavily on gradient backgrounds while scrolling left/right on the home screen. Turning up the brightness does resolve the issue for the most part (you can still see it, but it goes away much quicker), but why is it so apparent on this display versus others (Galaxy S5)? Maybe having many more pixels to flip on and off in the affected area is the cause due to the phone having a 2k display versus the 1080p display of the Galaxy S5. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

i have no idea what to do and i dont want to visit service on the holiday season..... :crying:
Mine does this also. Only when the brightness is extremely low. I think it has something to do with the pixels being "lazy" when the brightness is low. It would be a drawback that comes naturally from the benefit we get with OLED.
EDIT: To sum it up, nothing is wrong, it's natural, just turn up your brightness when it is critical to not have the smearing.

that is what i undrestood too (from reading about Galaxy S4s with this issue and also Lumias)
But i really freaked out when i first mentioned this on my phone! and on the idea of possible service visit

Word. I only noticed it in low brightness levels so I'm not worried. At least blacks are actually black, instead of some purple-ish weird color they had back in the first Note.

The poor color reproduction is the exact reason this is my first OLED screen. They've finally got it right.

Is it just some minor smearing while scrolling? I'm pretty sure most if not all devices I have used have this a little when scrolling quickly.

its an 1 inch smudge while i'm in the gallery, or 0.2inch smudge while viewing movies (POC: On stranger's tide for example)
haven't noticed it in any games other than minecraft(clouds go purple) ! (i don't play it, touch controls act weird on my note)
