[Q] Few questions before I buy Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends,
I am considering to buy a Note 2 to replace my main device as Sensation's touchscreen failed upon me.
I have few questions and I will appreciate your valuable replies.
1. Is Note 2 hardware good enough for next 2 years? I don't play much games and mostly Subway Surfer, Real Racing, MC4. Maybe half hour a month. But I want to be able to run all upcoming Android versions (atleast till developers support this device).
2. I read about SDS somewhere few months before. Is every Note 2 affected? I can't afford to have an expensive paper weight.
3. Does Note 2 have some dual-boot kernel?
4. Any ROM with Note 3 features esp that circle popup thing (or its my wishful thinking ) ?
5. Otherwise which would be recommended Custom Stock ROM, Recovery and kernel (dual-boot is definitely preferred)?
6. Any other major hardware bugs?
7. Btw, could someone guide me as how to check if I decide to buy my friend's old Note 2? How I check it for faults esp hardware? I am getting tempted as I could save some good money for other accessories
If there is something else which hasn't come to my mind but is important please feel free to add. I would be much obliged
Thank you so much !!!

1. Im fairly sure the phone will be extrwmwly adequate 2 years from now (obviously no one knows for sure) but the quad core processor is very capable of playimg the ges you mention. Although there are devices out that already have octo core processors, they all are only usong 4 at any one time and the differences are bare noticable at best.
2. As long as you are getting your phone from an authorized dealer then you shouldnt worry about SDS as that comes with older models and should come with a warrenty that would allow for replacement (one way or another)
3. The guy that built the (either S2 or S3) dual boot kernal was receiving donations to help him fund the tools to make it back in Jan-Mar of this year and I havent heard anything since... nor have I seen anything about it anywhere (atleast not on TMO LTE version. Youre more than welcome to search around a bit yourself)
4. Yes and No... there is but Team E (or whoever) has certain restrictions (really just permission only use) on alot of the Note 3 features that have been made for the Note 2... not really stone walling development, just protecting their hardwork and asking for proper credits, no alterations without reporting back to them, etc... it will be in every new rom eventually
5. Really a matter of who you ask and personal preference. I myself love Ptmr3s Jedi series (Master for TMO WiFi calling or X for other Note 2) but thats because 4.4 isnt out and I love the functionality that TW has for the particular device (samsung hasnt open sourced their SPen, MultiWindow, etc) so theyre not on non-TW BASED roms.. if you prefer AOSP, AOKP, or Paranoid Andriod, or PACMAN, etc than there are carious roms to pick and choose from. As for Kernal... each rom will provide (or users will post kernals that are compatible (I.e. dont use just any kernal on any rom... only what has been tested and proven).
6. Nothing major that isnt morw than an isolated incident at best... obviously of roms are newer or in nightly stages there will be bugs but nothing really hardware related... should mention sometimes on calls, the person your talking to will here themselves (echo) but that is sorta sparatic at best and most roms its not that bad and nothing major (again not really hardware related)
7. eMMC bug checker app. Download from play store, (look up the thread on here) and it will show you what to look for
Hope this helps...
Ultimately the Note should be continued to be developed for some time and able to withstand another 2 years of updates and new handsets. Already have 4.4 on TMO (omnirom - though not a daily driver) and carriers are pushing out stock 4.3 ASAP

@PhxDroid86
Thank you for detailed reply.
So if I am buying new deice I wouldn't have that SDS bug. Right?
I am little surprised (and disappointed) that a powerful device like Note 2 doesn't have dual-boot functionality. That way I could run both Stock (I love various TW functionalities) and AOSP/AOKP/PA, etc
Could you plz provide link or name of the ROM with Note 3 features? Does it have that circle thing?
Thank you once again !!!

No idea whats it called. Yes using S-Pen.
In my country we don't have carrier thing. We have to buy devices at full price

Find out the model of the note 2 amd visit that particular xda thread for further info on uograded custom roms amd updates... also (in case you dont know better... dont flash a rom designed for a dofferwmt device (model number) unless you know what to do.. youll lose cell service and have a bunch of stuff to do just to fix it (some people have ecpensive paper weights)
Good luck, I think the note 2 is a good decision on your part

Yes this circle thing I was talking about. So its called S-Finder....ok
Have you used it? Its good?
Any idea about dual-boot thing?
And, I am glad to have given you yours first Thanks here

Thank you mate
Yes it's working verry good. I am using DN3 as we speak and it's a daily driver for me. The rom does not have yet note 3 camera and have a few minor bugs but nothing serious.
For me is as if a bot a note 3 and next update of the rom was anounced allready by the developers.
Edit:
Never felt the need of dual boot and didnt heard of it either for note II.
Please excuse my english...not my native language

Developer support?

I've read a news article on Pulse that this phone won't have much developer support due to Samsung keeping some files locked out for developer support, and that Cyanogenmod won't be developing on this phone due to that.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I don't understand the situation fully, but it sounds like Samsung has committed to releasing the source, so I am hoping that means it will get Cyanogenmod and good dev support.

Interesting..hate Touchwiz but it does have some nice features.

This might be a dumb question, I've just begun researching this but it concerns development. I'm considering jumping from my Verizon contract to AT&T for this phone, based on the virtual certainty that the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader. Are AT&T phones locked on a case by case basis, or is it already a given that this phone will release with devs able to mess with it? I don't want to play a waiting game like the S3 on Verizon despite their huge number of users.
From my understanding there will be NO cm support on any further samsung devices..But then I seen this? so who knows...lol

Pretty sure that is a port, not the actual CM team doing the work
i know cm10 is cool but i dont understand why people would want this on the note 2 since all the features that make the note 2 are TW related but thats just me.

Personally I agree, but this is xda and people will want to mod. I'll be rooting, but I doubt I'll flash any custom ROM's.
My order is in and I agree,
UNLESS...the many features including the S Pen etc. are ported to new ROMS I don't think I'll flash...
BTW ...anyone know of a cure for ORD

oh i will be doing the same ill flash customs roms just TW ones as i want to keep the features like spen and all that jazz.
on older devices cm was awesome cause it was fast but now as the phones are more powerful then ever i dont see a need to run them. just me tho
Same. I don't think I'll be flashing any Non-TW ROM on the Note 2. I've been flashing AOKP and CM10 on the Note 1 so I've been missing the TW S-Pen features.
This is why im glad i got the N7100 model, just sayin

Pretty much all I know is what I read on rootzwiki, but I thought that they were not going to drop all Samsung devices, but only the ones that used Exynos CPU's due to inadequate source or documentation or something. But then I think Samsung has committed to releasing this, so hopefully that means Cyanogenmod will not drop them anymore, but I haven't heard anything official.

I have to admit a lot of the features they added do seem genuinely useful, but I still think I would give them up for Cyanogenmod.
It is my understanding (from what I have read about the Note 1, etc) that android natively supports stylus input since ICS, and so it should be able to still work in Cyanogenmod. It is just that there are very few apps that really make use of it besides the ones from Samsung, Hopefully this will improve over time though.
I am with you guys, I personally will root the device and debloat it for now... But stock rom right now seems to be very nice..lol...
We will have alot of great roms coming out either way with or without cm support. I know a couple devolpers coming here shortly and there work is awesome.
There will be plenty of support. I will be working on a few things myself once I get the device. I helped start the CM development in the original note.
And the reason why we run AOSP vs all the craptastic useless stuff Samsung adds its because I personally like vanilla Google. Samsung changes to much. Android in stock form is beautiful. Just my opinion not trying to start a flame war.
If I run stock it will be stripped down deodexed and debloated likke a mofo.
If I decode to build an device tree and attempt to build CM I will. With the open support from Samsung it won't be difficult.
I know of a few developers coming this way also we will have plenty of support I'm sure

Normally I agree, and my S3 i definitely agree. But this phone is built around samsungs incorporation of the s-pen and related features. If AOKP roms ignore the s-pen, theyre useless to me.. why even get this phone then?
I think the most popular roms on this phone will be stock based, debloated and feature rich roms, much like Ariel rom for the ATT Galaxy s3 out now.

Touchwiz is hideous.
Don't get me wrong, Samsung has done some great things with the multitask and S-pen, but AOSP Jellybean makes Touchwiz look like a featurephone UI from 2003.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I will root it, but I'm going to take my time about flashing a custom ROM. I want the full functionality of that stylus as designed - as an old Palm girl, this is one of the main reasons I'm getting the Note 2. That plus the excellent GPS - coming from a woefully awful Captivate GPS. I had a Garmin iQue 3600, the Palm OS GPS unit, and am frankly spoiled by that integration. If only Garmin hadn't given up like that.....

[Q] Will the Note II get an official CM10?

Hello there peeps, I'm an X Note I user, really enjoyed the experience until my phone got broke heh! And then I bought an S3, my current phone. Im currently running CM10 on my S3, runs good, but because of the close sourcing of the Exynos processor, its still not THAT smooth as it should be. But my taste always is a bigger screen, so I want to get back a Note II. I highly DOUBT that Im ever gonna use Touchwiz....
So the question is, will the Note II get a hands on from Teamhacksung? And we'll get an official support from CM10?
Besides, Samsung has finally decided to give devs some documentation of its Exynos4 source !
Replies would be appreciated as I'm considering to buy the Note in few days, still not so sure! Hope you can help
The current CM team isn't touching any future exynos devices besides the S3 and the Tab if im correct. But if someone new want to come in and start developing for the Note 2 than it would be possible, which we already have a few members here working on CM10 for the note 2 and made some progress. CM10 in the works
Don't expect any official support for CM tho on the Note2..
Running a AOSP build just goes against everything the Note 2 was meant for

Then why did we have a CM10 support for the Note 1 ? Same idea, the whole idea about the Note was with the pen. And yet, the Note I got an official CM10. I dont care about the pen features, Im after a gorgeous 5.5 inch screen actually...and run AOSP rom on it. I can't bare touchwiz.

Those who have tried AOSP roms and figured out that it beats Samsung's Touchwiz ROMS ? Easily and clearly. Forget about the feature Sammy plug in which are awesome for intance. But when it comes to performance and UI ? The Vanilla pure Android experience is the best one out there....

because it uses a older processor than the new Note 2 and GS3 (Exynos 4210) we use Exynos 4412, the GS2 even have problems with CM and other aosp roms. (Didn't some of your roms the menu button didnt work?)
Also the US version of the Note 1 came with a snapdragon processor..
Samsung just don't want to release the right docs for the Exynos line. you can build a AOSP rom for the note 2 it just would be a a$$ to get everything fully working with out the sources you need.
Reb0rn and simone are both working on an unofficial CM10 for the note 2, and I believe Entropy said if they get it working and all their gerrit **** is OK there's no reason for it not to be made official with them as the maintainers.
I may be wrong about that last bit though, it's best to just go read that thread.
I believe cm10 is a downgrade from the stock software. Multitasking for example separates this phone from the rest. Never thought that I'll say a phone out of the box better suits my needs than cm10, aokp, or paranoid. Sorry

[Q] Note 10.1 Tablet Port for Note 2? Has it been done? Who is working on it?

I had the Note 10.1 Tablet for a couple of months and it was a really great device. It had a lot of great features? I'm just wondering if anyone is working on a port for the 10.1 tablet Rom to the Note 2 I feel like it should work great, considering the Note 2 is quadcore and all. I loved the quick menu with the mini apps too. I've searched google a lot for an answer to this but haven't found anything so I thought I'd post a new topic. If it's been posted already Mod please move or delete. Thanks
I don't intend to be rude do you understand anything about Android? My computer is quad core can I port the rom there to? It is impossible to do what your asking, it would be easier to write it from scratch.

Actually in this case it is theoretically possible as they do share a lot of architecture, both are Exynos 44xx series SoC's with a lot more hardware similarities. Now whether it is worth the time and effort, that is a different story.

Assuming you want tablet touchwiz ui. Someone on another forum/site was working on it with original note.
But this is not an easy task.
What exactly you want from the galaxy note 10.1? Is it tablet mode? If so thats easily available for us.
This is xda. You could start the development.

Petition for android kitkat on our galaxy grand

When the kitkat is compatible even on 512mb ram devices, our grand has got such a good ram and it has pretty large user's, why can't we..! This is not fair by the Samsung...! When our competitor micromax canvas 2 is getting kitkat(micromax has announced the list) why can't we.? Samsung look towards only its high end devices like s3,s4, note2 and note3.. its partial towards their high end customers...! Samsung is looking only to increase their sales not continued support for their customers, so it has launched grand lite/neo..!
So this is the petition to upgrade our firmware to 4.4 kitkat.. who are all with me.?

Haha....well LOL brother..its really decent of u who thinks that way and just for that started a new thread....but its not gonna make samsung change there mind...
1st. The samsung giving kitkat only to those four phones is not completely true...
Yes first they will release for those devices...obvious it would be really weird for all those people who purchased there s4 or note 3 ,and samsung gives kitkat not to them first but us ..
2. Its just first installment lets say...its nothing like only these devices will get kitkat...many more devices will get but in later future...they will get the priority as they are flagships...
3.. Any way its universal truth that samsung updates are always late ...google releases kitkat and many devices gets it, still it takes months for Sammy's devices to get the same (bcoz OEMs takes time)...
So just wait and wait if Samsung declares the confirmed list with names of devices which will get kitkat ,after these flagships....
Though its a good gesture u are concerned about it, but starting a new thread just for poll is not required ..
No offence buddy..i am with u...
But lets start developing by ourselves rather than waiting for these companies to do for us..
If pawitp , xenon92 and k2wl would have thought the same , and if they would have just sit on there homes and just make a thread like this one and vote, then i dont think we would have got all these kitkat roms (kudos to all )....
Hope u get what i am saying...
No offense ...
With your cause xD ..

When Grand 2 will get Kitkat (and it will) we will only get JB 4.3... I think. Developing updates is a money loss for all companies and they prefer to release a sequel device instead.
Besides Grand's main market is for ordinary people in developing countries... And ordinary people doesn't really care about Kitkat anyway, as long as the apps they want work well on their devices. Vast majority of apps still work on JB 4.2.2. And it will be for a few years ahead. Hell, there are even some people who still uses Froyo.
The choice to not update our device makes sense (economically) for Samsung. All companies are built for profit, not for loss, and because of the nature of Samsung itself (a mainly hardware company, not software company i.e. Google) they only get the money from selling as many devices as they can.
You probably should've bought a Nexus device.
And btw, this should be in the general section.
Am totally agreeing with u.Sure u can file a complaint throug samsung official website its simple and it's all what we could do to get atleast 4.3 or a fix for performance. Till recent 4.2udate device is laggy so it's a nice idea
By the way Google havnt updated its Galaxy Nexus to KiTKaT

Exactly.
AOSP and its derivations of Kitkat are just plain JB 4.3 with minor features (ART, printing, white interface, etc.). Most of the Google features are already updated via Google Play Store. So nowadays there's really no reason to rush the upgrade to Google's latest and greatest, because we already have almost all of Google's Kitkat features distributed via Play Store. These are i.e. Google Keyboard, Camera, Photos, Calendar, Hangouts, etc.
It has some upsides:
- People who are stuck in earlier Android versions can taste some of Google's latest features without upgrading the Android version.
- People who are tied to carrier restrictions can now bypass that and get the latest Google features
- These apps will be updated more frequently than the Android version.
- It will be more lawsuit-proof. All of these apps are now copyrighted by Google and closed source, meaning no other companies can copy any of the apps features without asking Google. It was different in the past when it was all open source, everybody can copy and derive (with author credits of course)
And the downsides is that this is bad for developers community because we're now more dependent to Google Apps than ever before...

Mahn..if u think that this all new releases of lite/grand 2 is marketing ..then i would laugh at samsung for its poor marketing ..
Stats shows that their sales last year were 18-23% less then last to last year..
S4 didnt sell that well..and making bunch of less powerful phones rather then making one powerful mobile is worst strategy ever...people who live in developing countries (like india) ended up purchasing these poor performance mobiles rather than waiting and saving for a big one (and that's why many good handsets didnt set record as they were supposed to)..giving my example :|..
I was thinking to save so that i could take a good mobile...waited, so that can take a cool sammy phone (coz they are powerful)..
I ended up taking this mobile coz it had released and was in Budget ,rather then saving and getting good one(that was a way too far road )..
So marketing word..is something turns out Samsung has forgot..
Just 1 exynos chip dual core in grand and 720p resolution for 5" screen was 100times better then what they made today... It was okay then if device was a bit costlier too..(at least ppl wudnt hav ended up taking a cell with not that grt power ).. Alot alot of thanks to developers out there who gave there sooo precious time just so that i didnt sold my grand ...all thanks to them mahn..
Yea..so u were telling something about marketing ..

Companhies are filling the market with mid-end mobiles like xperia models, motoX from motorola, and others are coming to Brazil for a fraction of a High end device and still good qualities, exactly as said before.
The only one thing bothers me on Grand Duos is lacking of memory management. Even maintaining a controlled number of applications, sometimes I have to close the active ones so the phone can become slower or unresponsive. I´m using 4.2.2 from TIM carrier, Brazil.
I greenified some applications but still a little laggy sometimes, so Kitkat seems a hope for me, but I need dual sim funcionallity, so I need to wait the update, or change for another nexus based model.
I also think our phone will not get kitkat

Only regret i have on this device is its screwn resolution and broadcomm chipset...which are the main reasons why we dont get official custom roms/high quality game support....thats the main reason whyy...!
I ll keep thia device anyway for few months more and will take moto g or something!..
Abt the petition... Lets see what happens..

my first phone ill always keep it...and why not if we get such awesome roms!

[Q] Few questions about the N3N

Hello everyone!
So I'm looking at a new device, probably gonna get a new one later this year or beginning of next one. Currently this N3N is the one I have on first palce on my list, mainly for that awesome battery life and for being Samsung. Also this device has a great price-value rate here currently and price will even drop after Note 4 gets available. I have a few questions before I can be sure about getting the device though.
1. Isn't it too huge? I have a 4.7 inch device now, kinda convenient. Tried Note 3 before, surprisingly that 5.7 inch didn't feel too big, but still, I can't think about how I could handle something over 5 inches. Is it possible to use it one-handed in fullscreen mode (I mean without using the one-handed mode feature)? Can I reach all parts with my thumb if holding the device in hand?
2. Battery life <--> performance: The Exynos hexa-core chipset looks promising, is it really capable of handling a good balance between performance and battery life? I read amazing battery life results in that thread and didn't read any issues about performance. Any lags, stutters?
3. Are there any currently known ways of rooting without tripping Knox? I don't want to flash a custom rom (nor custom recovery) first, but rooting and removing all bloatware would be essential. Towelroot doesn't work: more people reported it doesn't and I checked the kernel and the futex patch is applied. Newer exploits might work (in the future), because no Samsung-made hardening code is enabled according to the kernel (the code is there, it just isn't enabled). Of course there is CF Auto-Root, but that's a no-go, because of Knox.
4. Does Xposed Framework work well? Some users wrote it does so I guess yes.
5. Does the S Pen fit correctly? I don't want to lose it when going around. Is it useful? I don't think I'm gonna use it a lot, but who knows!
6. Anybody tried S View Cover? I see it exists, still don't know if I want one, just asking.
7. Is there a binary counter, same as on older Samsung devices? What stuff is there in bootloader at all?
8. Is there an activation lock, like on Note 3? Like you can only activate it where you bought it.
I probably will have more questions over time as I get to know things, will ask them then.
Thanks in advance!

All your questions will be answered by me! .
First: phone isn't too big it has smaller body than n2 and n3. I can use it one handed.
Second: there is no rooting without tripping knox . you are the only one who can do it without tripping Knox.
Thirderformance is great but will be greater if bloat is removed.
Fourth:s-pen fits perfectly. You can even use n3 s-pen if you lost your one which came with n3n. I personally tested it.

Hey Kaushal, thanks for the answers! The thing is, I'm not sure I want to buy the device until I know there's a safe rooting method for sure. :/ Downloaded the stock firmware today, gonna look around in there to see.
Hi Adam,
Haven't you been deeply involved in the LG 4x hd development?
I owned one but after i had lost it i went on to the note 3 neo.
I'm very happy with the phone. Too big for using it with one hand (for me).
Battery - performance ratio is superb. Battery is down to 4% now after 2d 5h and around 6,25h screen on.
I haven't rooted because of knox right now.
Waiting for an method without tripping it.
The pen comes in very handsome from time to time if you need to write down sth quickly or if you need to write longer texts.
Hopefully you decide to buy a note 3 neo.
Perhaps you can unleash some more potential of the device
Got it for 299€.

Hello Adam,
Last month I bought a Note 3 Neo, as my first android device. I have been a long time iOS user. To be honest the machine surprised me. I realy love it, especialy the battery life. For me as well I get around 2 days without any problems.
One hand using is impossible for me too, but it doesnt disturb me, at least knowing that it is impossible, now I drive more safely since I dont try to answer a message..etc
I've rooted it two days ago but yeh I 've ruined the warranthy, but anyways I am not an experienced Android user, so if there was a way to do it without ruining the warranthy, I dont know.
Xposed Framework works well, I mean I installed it then I installed Wanam Xposed and it works very well.
Yes S-Pen fits perfectly, actualy i love using it for sketches while waiting people..etc, powerful enough for thumbnail sketching.
On 17th October I bought the Note 4, even tho it feels a higher quality, it feels also bulkier than the Note 3 Neo, and I miss the soft home button of the N3N, of course the hardware is much better and the screen quality, but i find out using my n3n at home time to time to browse internet when i am at home (without sim card ) more than the N4. So I would definitely advice you to buy one, May be you can check also the N3 since I think that the price will go down soon, and it is as good as N4 (more or less) and in my opinion has a prettier design.
Yes, I was developing for the O4X, still using the device, but need a change soon, that's why looking at the N3N too.
Regarding size I really have to try N3 again so I can experience it properly.
The problem with the whole Knox thing is that still we won't be able to flash real custom recoveries and kernels without tripping Knox. Of course we could use modules, but it's not the same as having a whole custom-built kernel.
What ?!?!? @Adam77Root here ?!?!?
Great news ! I'm happy to see you here.
My previous phone was a O4X and I followed your developement.
Here's the answer (compared to O4X) :
1 - It's all about the time, first days the phone seems a bit huge but now o4x seems really smal and the size of n3n it's ok.
If you don't have a small hand, you can use it without problems (i can reach the top of the screen with the thumb quite easily)
2 - Battery life is amazing compared to o4x (6-8 or even 10 hours screen on time and from 1 to 3 days of total usage,100% to 5%).Performance for now are great but o4x with a custom rom seems a bit faster but whit that battery life, trust me i'ts a different world.
Lags : no lags or not so visible IMHO
3 - Not already rooted so I don't know
4 - as 3 -
5 - yes,it is well fitted in the phone
6 - not tried 'cause I don't like so much and the original one it cost too much for me lol
7 - I can't answer to that question
8 - Ehm...what ? LOL
If you have some more questions, just ask

On the Note 3, you have to activate the device before first use and on the majority of devices it has to be done in the same region (AFAIK network check is done) where it was bought, other devices (the minority) don't have the lock.
ok...I bought it in Italy on a local store for 280€ so it's not imported and it is not branded : I just paid it and I put my micro-sim card on it,I did't have to activate the phone.
On an italian forum I read that some people bought it on the web and sometimes the phone is not "italian" but is "imported" but the users use the phone without problems.
I suggest you to ask to someone that lives in your country.
Guys, does the device have FM radio?
