Not currently rooted running 4.1.2 should i wait to root? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys and girls just joined the site been looking around and reading alot of interesting things.
Like the title says im running 4.1.2 but i hear there might be a release of 4.2 coming the 20th?
I'm wanting to root my phone and join the club. I'm pretty much a newb when it come to this I want to make sure i do everything right when i start the process i'm a truck driver so my phone is a important part of my day to day activity and cant end up bricking my phone.
Ive been looking at youtube vids and reading comments some people having problems and some doing just fine.
Could someone recommend a link one with a video to show the process that would be great, should i wait for a over the air update to 4.2

Sprint won't be going to 4.2 . They are bypassing and the upcoming update will be 4.3. I would wate until the update comes out before you root. That way the roms and rooters will be able to be written and hou can have all the perks of an official 4.3
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Note II on Tapatalk Pro.

I disagree. I would root now. It's possible with any OTA update, it could secure the root exploit. And nothing has been really said when any update is coming. Could be a couple weeks or a couple months.
And if you're rooted already, you'll only need to wait a day or two before someone uploads a rooted version of the update to flash.
Plus, if you fubar something, it's likely already been done and you'll be able to find a fix.
And if you do depend on your phone, it's hard to say what things may get borked with the update. So by waiting those few days for the updated rom, you'll find out what is not working and can decide if updating is right for you. Sometimes updates will bork things like GPS.
Personally, I don't see anything you really gain by waiting.

Ditto on rooting before an update. Get root before the Knox **** hits your phone and your warranty is permanently b0rked. Once 4.3 and Knox is on your phone, if you ever root there's chance in hell of ever claiming on your warranty. More likely than not.

What happened with the link being removed for the toolkit download? I watched the video on post #4 seems to be easiest way to do this.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956180
Is this still a good option for rooting the phone?

Any ideas?

Just got my 4.1.2 note today. Within an hour after bringing it home I found the old toolkit I rooted with my other note before I traded it. Why wait

Not wanting to wait just want an instruction how to I'm a trucker with a lap top and never have Wi-Fi unless I'm at McDonald's so I don't get to check and download what I'm needing to.

HTC Inc2 Update- My thoughts

We're all trying to be really patient with the status of our phone S-Off, and I was thinking about the update that may (or may not) be coming to our phone. I am personally not going to update when it comes out, just to be on the safe side. alpharev is obviously doing good work for us behind the scenes, and I don't want to screw up my opportunity to get S-Off and root when they release; on the off chance that an update might prevent that from happening.
Obviously, this is just my paranoia kicking in, but I've seen some people on HTC FB that are claiming that they updated, and now can't root. Thoughts?
lol, ease off the crack rock budy, it will be here any day. I havent heard any news of an update comeing the next few days anyways, so you wont have a choice most likely.
The unlock is rumored to be released "soon" (within a week was mentioned, but probably a bit optimistic), while the next update is rumored to be August (this is only a couple months away, btw). Keep in mind these are rumors.
AlphaRev will likely want to break the update to maintain device compatibility so more than likely they will keep up.

Not sure how I'm on the pipe? I'm just saying that I'm not going to install the update right away if I have a choice. Thanks though.
I was wondering about the GPS fix that HTC is working on for the Dinc2. What if we are rooted and that is pushed out? What happens then?

Someone will dump the updated rom, and make it available for rooted users. The only way this update can mess something up is if HTC decides to fix the exploit that currently allows the phone to be rooted... but from what they have stated publicly, they are moving away from that direction and mind set (thank god).
Eventually a DEV will incorporate all the fixes that the OTA update has into their ROM/stock ROM, whatever. and I think it's great we have a recovery ready for when alpha drops the S-OFF. it's better than getting S-OFF and having no way to flash anything..

Once rooted, a RUU can be torn apart and made into a root friendly ROM. We can still get all of the benefits of updates even if they do patch exploits.

Root help for gingerbread 2.3

I am a total noob, so please, be nice. I lost my phone and I was given a new one with this gingerbread 2.3 crap and unrevoked obviously doesn't work for this.
I see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110733
What the hell does that mean? And how can I get this damn thing rooted. I need like a step by step guide... Not just postings or links. I have no idea what to do. Can someone PLEASE help me!
There is not root method for 2.3 yet, not even temporary. The boot loader is also encrypted, so installing a new ROM is not possible.
The link you posted is a rooted version of the 2.3 ROM, but you mush have an unlocked boot loader to install it. Again, once 2.3 unrooted is installed there is no root method.
Is it ever going to be possible to root the phone?
Also, can I just go back to my old version? I was forced into this because I lost my phone.

Here's your guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204 But right now it is not possible. Notice at the top of the article it says when it was last updated. Just keep an eye on the thread and whenever it's updated you'll know you're probably onto something.
Just keep in mind in order to get it rooted and not screw up your phone, you will have to read a lot of posts and links. There's really no way around that... especially with brand new software versions.
Oh, and the link you posted isn't a way to root, it's just a ROM that you can try installing once you get your phone rooted.

Bootloader isn't encrypted...we'd really be screwed then. It's just that it's locked, and they haven't found a new exploit yet. Keep in mind that these are security exploits that allow us to get root -- in principle, a bad thing that we want cleaned up, but we need them for root. In theory it's possible no exploits remain and they've plugged all holes, but that's quite doubtful. There's something, it just has to be found.
How many of these threads are people gonna start?

Unless of course it's a brand NEW phone, and they find root with in 6 days of launch.
They may find root access, but it won't be until they're done tinkering with the new EVO 3D or whatever new phone is out there.
If they really wanted to root the new GB update, they'd have done it by now. Took 6 days to crack the EVO 3D.
GB has been out since the beginning of June.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I won't be holding my breath.

I would not even call EVO 3D "Temp Root" yet. More like "Momentary Root". That thing is sure is locked down.

Evo 3D has a new version of Sense. New version of Sense means new security vulnerabilities. We have the same old version of Sense we've always had, and the known vulnerabilities have been patched. There just aren't as many opportunities on the Evo. The older a phone gets, the harder it becomes to root if they're patching the vulnerabilities.

Exactly why we are so thankful for them. They do amazing work for all of us to enjoy.
I think the most frustrating thing of all are the people that involuntarily had their phones updated to the newest version. If it weren't for that, and the fact that there hasn't been a problem rooting since BEFORE the EVO was the officially released, patience is hard to come by.
I just happened to be one of those that happened to have this issue as well. I'm very upset because my app backups are inaccessible and this has taken much longer than I was originally willing to wait. I'm slowly hating my phone little by little...

How many people are waiting?

I was among the many who downloaded (immediately) the OTA, but amidst the frenzy, I ended up removing the update zip and I froze the Samsung/Google update process applications because I was wasn't willing to risk the inevitable compatability issues that arise on a new OS. I'm curious, though--how many others are wading the storm until development catches up? As it stands, this is the best phone I've ever had and I can't imagine risking functionality for the sake of being on the latest OS.
Also, when do you expect development catch up to provide a viable root method that doesn't trip knox, among other things? My guess is about 30 days.
Any thoughts?

I am waiting almost indefinitely. Every now and then i restore back to stock just to make sure I'm not missing out on anything. 4K video recording? Pffft, whatever. rapid-shot? samesies. I have an 18MP DSLR that can do all of those things much better if it's that important to me. Sure, I don't always have it in my pocket, but, compared to the professional grade those features don't even qualify as also-ran to me.
can't really think of a single thing that I miss from stock.
I got this phone the second my Jump was ready and I saw CM nightlies. Been on KK for a while now.
Now, if I were a fan of TW? I'd still sit tight and ride it out. There is nothing on KK that is all that amazing compared to JB. In fact, there are quite a few deficits.
On older versions of Android (I started out on Cupcake...guh) while I was still of the "don't take OTAs unless you want to risk your phone getting stuck on the new version or locked up tight" train...and this was before that ever started happening....and back then it was hard as hell because every update added _TONS_ of functionality and improved _TONS_ of things....I can't even describe how hard it was to delay OTAs back then. Nowadays we get evolution, not revolution, from every update. Tiny incremental stuff.
I'd say sit tight and wait it out, you aren't really missing anything.
...though when the ART (Android Runtime) replaces Dalvik, officially, on stock ROMs? That'll be the next big thing that would even get me considering just doing the damned update. I've got ART running and it is awesome. It's pretty much unnoticeable at first, especially if you go looking for the massive improvement. Then over the course of using your phone for a couple days you just start realizing "holy crap, that was fast"...but only over tiny little speed improvements....all over the damned place. It smooths out Android in ways I can't even describe (and that you can't even notice if you go looking for it).
Again, be patient. Just keep in the back of your mind that you never ever know if this next OTA is the one that locks down your bootloader. Sure, this one might be safe...maybe even the next one...hell, maybe all of them. But what if the next one is the one that finally does it? Not worth it. Your phone is awesome out of the box.
I rooted both my Note 3's just to keep from getting the update. So far I am seeing lots of people complain about different issues so I am glad I did. Overall it doesn't seem like the couple of positive changes are worth the risk. I still haven't seen a straight answer on if the bootloader is actually locked or not. This is the first phone I have had that has an unlocked bootloader so I have never really looked into the difference between locked and unlocked.

I haven't really looked into it, but, I have been on phones (or have been helping out buddies with their phones) when an update locked a previously unlocked bootloader. The forums would be a ****-show. So I feel pretty confident that this did not lock down the bootloader to prevent custom kernels and/or recoveries...those are the deal-breakers. However, you cannot roll back to 4.3 after taking this official update, so far as I understand it. It's pretty standard stuff in this day and age.
That's another reason not to take it.
I didn't update right away. I waited a couple of days until a proven root method was out. Once that came out I went for it. I'm glad I did. I was already rooted before, and tripped KNOX, so that didn't bother me. 4.3 was great, and I didn't think this phone could get much better, but after a couple of days on 4.4.2 I'm seeing some good improvements. Better battery life, less resources used, smoother overall. I'm really liking it. Plus the GEL works great. Even the hot word detection works like on Nexus devices. I know a huge issue with 4.4.2 is the SD card not having write access, but I flashed the fix, so all works like it did on 4.3. Overall a really nice update. At least for me.
I agree with daneurysm, if your happy on 4.3 jellybean there's no need to rush and flash 4.4.2 just because it's available and adds a few new features (none that I see are must have). It is always best to wait it out a bit and let the devs do their hard work on these firmware updates to provide us with a truly impressive updated rom that we can flash safely, as long as your willing to follow their directions in doing so.
I had no temptation taking the OTA or Odin to downgrade to official 4.4.2, it seems to me the update took away more vital features than it was providing. Which again is why one should wait for their favorite devs to create their masterpieces out of the official releases, and tweak/fix any mishaps that were left in official kitkat firmware so we the people can have truly great running roms for our devices.

So, we're about a month into the update and I'm curious how many have remained idle while the folks fine tune the kitkat experience. I'm still very pleased with the functionality of my device and aside from weak LTE signal, I have no complaints.
I am hence compelled to ask again--is it worth updating yet? Or do cons continue to outweigh the pros?

I just saw there's a way to root 4.4.2 without tripping knox if you're on a rooted 4.3, so I'm going to give that a go tonight. I'll post back with my thoughts.
Good things come to those who wait!
I wouldn't update if I had to do it again. My phone is bootlooped and completely unfixable at the moment after installing the OTA update on a bone stock non rooted phone. Can't get into recovery, can't downgrade, can't do anything except reflash the stock 4.4 rom which never boots.
There are tons of complaints on the TMO customer support forums citing poor battery life and loss of certain functions. This could turn your phone into a paperweight. Not worth it.

After some temptation to check out one of the growing number of ROMS in the dev forum, but am glad that I decided stick with Tweaked on 4.3. Probably won't update until Tweaked KK drops which doesn't sound like something that's going to be happening for quite a while.
How's that saying go?... "If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it with a weak-ass update."

Does CM11 Require S-Off or Root?

I already asked this in the newbie thread but they sent me here...
I'm getting confused after reading countless threads regarding root, s-off, and 4.4.2 so I'll keep my question brief:
Can I get CM11 on my HTC One (Verizon)? I have a stock phone with 4.4.2, not rooted, and s-on. I know s-off cannot be achieved due to root being unavailable at this time. Is there another method to get a custom ROM onto the phone?

Ok, I kind of figured that was going to be the answer. I wasn't sure if there was some sort of side loading method floating around that I missed. I'm definitely not paying $75 for root. Does the java card method that only costs $25 not work? I'd be willing to pay that but not much more...

If you have the Verizon Note 4 you are stuck with stock as the boot loader is locked and no root exploit has been developed.

There's a thread called 'Desktop Setup' a little further down the main screen of the forum. I only took a brief glance, but it looks like it's other Note 4 owners showing how they have their phones setup. I just mainly setup mine to reflect how I had my S4 set. Unfortunately, though, the last post before mine is correct in saying root hasn't been achieved for this device yet. However, if you're looking to be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot, you can purchase the full version of FoxFi for $7.95, or try the free version to see how you like it. The free one limits you to 5 megs per use, I think, before it disconnects you. I'm using the full version of the app to tether to my desktop right now, and it works pretty well. You can't turn it on with one tap like you can a rooted phone's hotspot, but you can turn off that way once you're done. The app lets me provide Wi-Fi for my XBox One, Tab 3 8.0, and Fire TV, too. Even though I can't root my phone yet, I still enjoy using it. Hope this helps, and sorry I rambled on a bit.

Haven't tried it yet, but I'm itching to give it a shot. I already downloaded the root file, but probably won't touch it til after this weekend, and the fact I got my phone set up the way I like it. I know this isn't the right thread, but before I make the decision to try this can anyone confirm that FoxFi works on 5.0.1? I'm currently on 4.4.4 and don't want to jump forward if it doesn't, since I need the hotspot. I know I can roll back to KitKat, but I'd lose all my stuff
Foxfi works like a charm on latest Verizon build, BOG5.

Cool. The build in the post pointing to a possible root is showing 'Galaxy Note 4 (Verizon USA) SM-N910V VZWVerizon wireless N910VVRU2BOF1 5.0.1', which has me somewhat hopeful, with a side of skepticism. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this thread for any updates, hopefully good ones.
The file for root at the bottom says "Galaxy Note 4 (Verizon USA) SM-N910V" but has smn910f (SM-N910F (Europe)) in the file name for the zip.
Please tell me you guys are not serious???? Look at the date this crap was posted 7th July. Do you honestly think no one has tried it yet and come on the forums to scream about it. Very dodgy looking site also.
Take it easy, no point in getting worked up about it. We're all just looking for ANY glimmer of a lead for root.

And how is a 5 month old post a glimmer of hope. Most People on this forum have had their note 4s for a long long time and have been following and hoping for the one post that will spring up "That root has been achieved" it doesn't help with you posting the same thing in 3 different threads about some rubbish that has been posted 5 months ago from a website that looks like it was thrown together the same day they posted the root instructions. If anything comes up it will be posted on XDA almost immediately I can guarantee it.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh but everyone on here has been waiting a long time I see your only new to this and also had a chance to return.
The problem is No one appears to be working on anything, you only have to look at the thread "Lets talk root" I don't see any one talking about how root may be obtained and I include myself in that. What needs to happen is for this Note 4 community to start posting ideas in that thread or start a bloody new one. I am willing to use my phone as a guiney pig but come on people lets start talking about how we may obtain root and start experimenting. I will flash anything any one wants to my phone so lets take it over to the "Lets talk Root" forum.
Rant Over
Believe me, I understand your frustration as I've rooted every Android device I've had, till now of course. If we get, we get it. If not, oh well. I have more important things to concern myself with than whether I can root my phone or not. I'm sure the person who originally posted the link was only trying to help and not cause any tension. I wish I could root this thing, but get grip, it's still just a phone.
