[Q] GNexus to Moto X Thoughts? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My galaxy nexus is getting noticeably slow. What are your guys thoughts of purchasing a Moto X as Gnex replacement?

I think it's a good change. Moto X has some nice features and the updates to the latest android versiones are coming

If you don't mind minimal development since it's locked down, everything else i've heard about the Moto X has been pretty good. Supposedly blows our Gnex out of the water in terms of speed and features. If you're on anything but Verizon, I just looked and you can unlock the bootloader through Moto, but I think only the Dev Edition doesn't get it's warranty voided if you unlock it.

both are great phones. i'd go to the store and see which one feels better in my hand.

Moto X is nice but way too pricey

I'm a current Galaxy Nexus user, but in the past month, my parents and 6 friends have all gotten Moto Xs and they love them. I've had the chance to play around with them myself, and the performance, feel, and features are really top notch. It feels like a very natural evolution of my Nexus, except with far better reception and battery life. Also, while AMOLED, the screen is brigher and clearer.
The regular black and white versions are very cheap on Amazon Wireless. The Moto Maker ones are more expensive, but there are a lot of sales, and honestly, the customized ones look amazing in person.
If you still want an unlocked bootloader, you can get a developer version. Motorola put warranties back on the unlockable versions of their phones this past week, so you won't be out in the cold if you bust your phone.
The Galaxy Nexus has been a great device, and will continue to be mine for a few more months. That being said, if you're ready to get something new, I think the Moto X is a really excellent choice.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus or Razr

Ok So now that both phones are essentially out. Granted the US version of the nexus isn't but close enough. I am kind of torn one what phone to buy. The biggest thing to me was ICS and since the Razr will be getting it at some point that is a lot less of a factor.
What other Reasons would you guys have for getting one or the other? Yes i have read all the reviews on both and understand the differences between the two. Anything game changing for you guys?
Nexus, the Razr doesn't seem to be all that good and Motorola aren't exactly reliable when it comes to updates.
Keep in mind that even if Razr will get ICS eventually, you'll still have to wait for future increment updates, and then there's jellybean.
I am eagerly waiting for the Nexus for several reasons in addition to being pure Android, better developer support, and future updates. The Nexus, IMO, looks better. The Razr is quite large even though it has a smaller screen. I heard that Razr has better call quality but that's not the most important thing to me because I only use maybe 20% of my phone to make calls. GN has a slightly newer and better SoC. The screen of the Nexus clearly wins hands down. Oh and no locked bootloader.
Having had both a motorola and a samsung previously (Milestone with motorola - non US version of the original Droid and the Galaxy S with samsung) I too faced the same question.
I went with the Nexus in the end as although the milestone was nice hard-ware wise, motoblur let it down and shackled it, motorola blatantly lied about updates and then failed to deliver them, and the updates that did come came with even more bugs than they were supposed to fix. Motorola are only interested in your $$$ their after sales customer service is appaling!
Having had the nexus for a week now I've not regretted the upgrade and would thoroughly recommend. I think as well being a nexus you're pretty much guranteed speedy updates over the razr and I think it looks better too.
I had both on my hand. And definitely goes for Galaxy Nexus, the galaxy nexus screen advantage almost override all other advantages from razr~!
The RAZR will always be crushed by motorola's updates and skins. And comparing the screens, the RAZR isn't even close to the GN.
You came to the Galaxy Nexus forum, which do you expect people to pick? The Razr?

I will be honest, i came here because this is what phone i had decided to wait for. But it seems that its not getting the greatest reviews, and the single biggest reason i picked it (ICS) i am a little nervous about. I mean lets be honest its never great to be the 1 to test something out.(New fighter plane or fire retardant suit comes to mind) I actually have a Razr, bought it for my wife and i like it a lot. I guess i am losing steam for holding out for the GN. And i thought this would be a great place for a discussion on what i should do.
Get the int'l razor. Supposedly bootloader can be unlocked but i havent followed up on that to see if its true. Reviews have been kind of meh to me.

Well if there was a GSM variant of the RAZR, I would actually have to think about my choice.
The RAZR's hardware is incredible, but in the end the non-bloatware Nexus and ridiculous screen quality would trump even the water-resistant and Gorilla Glass 2 feature of the RAZR.
Edit: Ack, there is a GSM RAZR. Good thing I already own the GNEX...

I'd go with the N but not because you can sit back and let Google give you timely updates and fix bugs. My Nexus S shipped with the search bug making it unusable. Best and only response from G was "first we heard about that problem". The hundreds of other users got the same. No update in sight and I never saw one. I lasted a week before rooting and flashing like we always do. Now it is a great device but no thanks to google. Moto would be a lot worse. I assume that I'll treat any phone no matter how it's sold as a dev device that I'll have to flash myself. I have full confidence in my lack of confidence with the new Nexus.
Get the GN,
I just came from a Motorola Atrix! Motorola suck at software updates & love locking bootloaders (although they are slowly changing)
GN FTW!
GN.
10char
Am about to buy the monster here in Germany, will wait for the first batch to be washed out into the market to avoid the baby teething issues (volume, search, whatever else).
Atrix has been good though, once the bootloader got unlocked & the roms started pouring in it became a beauty of a phone!
+1 on the wait and see attitude. let the first batch fly out and the next (fixed) batch to arrive. Whether the inevitable issues are google or samsung isn't important, there is a history of problems with each one so far and the new one is already showing problems. Hearing that the core issue (volume) is hardware related that will be "fixed" in software makes me think I'll not buy one at all now. I'll not go with the Moto for other reasons. The Galaxy S had hardware shortcomings also semi fixed in software and that wasn't good enough. After my third warranty repair I demanded a proper pb which they did and the problem went away. The Nexus S had OS issues that took much too long to fix. The new one no doubt will have issues. I'm not excited to be the fist on the block with another turkey.

Official reviews looked pretty good to me, maybe I read them wrong.
Btw...I thanked you on accident, consider it an early xmas gift.
I am fond of Motorola devices, they have good voice quality, good durability, good grip (despite being squarish). But none of their devices seem to support TMobile 3G band, so I can't get it. (As for firmware updates, what updates?)
I'd go with the GN. Bug fixes pretty quick and easy bootloader unlocking make an excellent combination.
However, with Google's acquisition of Moto, maybe they will be the way forward next year?
Thought about the same choice of phones and I think I'll be going with the GN mainly because of removeable battery.
The good thing about thin phones is that you can add to them bigger capacity batteries while still keeping a normal width. I currently have a 2700 Mah battery on my Samsung Galaxy S with the corresponding width (but not weight!) of my ex-Iphone 3GS.
Just yesterday, while abroad on work, I didn't use my phone at all (ok, probably not a very valid test) with wifi, 3G on and this morning, after 1d battery usage was down 12%.
I know that the important thing is lasting a 8h day but I'm the kind of guy that hates thinking about recharging my devices (Ipad 2 is perfect in this aspect) than actually doing it.
So I'm keeping my eye on GN extended batteries, specially from Momax....

So what now?

Was there anyone else who was looking forward to the unveiling of the Moto X today as a replacement for their GNex? Seemed too good to be true; non pentile amoled screen, similar form factor, near stock version of Android, great battery life, awesome camera, a 32gb option for gsm etc. I didn't care too much about the SOC specs as much as I was about pricing off contract. I'm not one of those delusionary people that were hoping for $199 or even $299 off contract, I knew that wasn't likely to happen. But from the looks of it we're looking at $639 for the 32gb model.... I was prepared for $400-500.
To be honest, I'm very happy with my GNex, the only gripe would be battery life at this point. Screen size is perfect, I actually love amoled displays, the 4.3 update is running really well.
So I guess I'm asking what is everyone looking forward to to replace their GNex? The GE phones do nothing for me, neither does the N4, and since there's a big chance the next Nexus will be derivative of the G2 I don't have my hopes up for it either.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
And the fact its only available in the US is pretty crap for us non-Americans. Seems pretty pricey though for a 'mid-range- phone.
What I've been hoping for is a G1 revamp. Absolutely loved that phone, and with the great specs HTC *can* push out of phones, that'd be beyond amazing IMO.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If the Moto X were to be $400 off contract I would be extremely tempted. The people who were hyping this phone to be $199-299 off contract and are disappointed have nobody to blame but themselves.
As for what you should upgrade to, what exactly are your looking for if the GE phones, Nexus 4 and the G2 don't strike your fancy? The Gnex is still a decent phone. You should be able to hold out on it for at least another 6 months to a year if you can live with the battery life and performance.
The pricing of the N4 is very appealing, but I'm not fond of the construction of it and neither the battery life. I'm over capacitive buttons, so the GE devices are out, and looks to me that their updates won't be coming in a timely manner (compared to a Nexus). I guess I saw the Moto X as the perfect replacement because the size, screen, and clean design are very similar, only better. I decided years ago that I'd never be tied to a carrier contact, nor purchase another cdma device, so off contract pricing is a very big component. Kinda wish the pricing would've leaked early so I wouldn't have been so disappointed.

Nexus 5 is the only phone I will be upgrading to, my gnex was the best decision i made an getting it when it first launched, almost 2 years since I got it an still reasonably good compared to the current smartphones out there an still getting the latest google updates.I will definitely get N5 at launch or just after so I can get the most time out of it before needing another upgrade just like I did with the gnex which will last probably till the end of this year before its hardware becomes too obselete to bother using anymore an dies a graceful death.

I really don't see the point in the moto x phone, do Motoroa expect this phone to do well when its not even available outside the US lol, near stock version of android basically means no official Google updates an n5 will most likely have better hardware, pure android an cheaper price tag.
I'm not sure what people were expecting from the moto x. It seems pretty nice to me. I will probably get it or the nexus 5. Every comment section is full of "mid range" or "last year's" comments. However, the thing benchmarks ahead of the s4 in most things and I'll take a non-pentile 4.7" 720p screen over a ridiculous 5" screen anyday. Wait til the reviews come in, I think they will be better than the fanboys think.

I will wait for a 1080 p screen.
I was never expecting crazy processor specs or a huge screen, just a great form factor and a nearly stock build of android, the battery life and camera were all icing on the cake. I just thought that the price point would reflect the more modest specs. Considering that Motorola is attempting to once again become a major player in wireless, I expected a very aggressive price point. Not the unrealistic $199 and $299 off contract, just lower than the other two major manufacturers.

Has the unlocked pricing been officially announced? All I've seen is the contract pricing and what people think the off contract price will be.

I was looking forward to the Moto X unveiling and I honestly didn't think too much of the rumors saying that it was going to be insanely cheap so I wasn't too surprised at where they priced it. To me the phone looks pretty impressive based on the unveiling yesterday and the initial reviews from Engadget and Gizmodo. Sure it's not at the top of line as far as specs go but at the end of the day if the thing is fast / responsive and provides an awesome end user experience the fact the processor is slightly dated shouldn't (read: doesn't) matter. It's got some pretty cool features that I'm looking forward to; mainly the touchless control, active display, and the camera. And if it really gets 24 hours of battery life on 'mixed' usage (not really sure what 'mixed usage' is though) then this seems like a really solid replacement for my Gnex.
The only thing I don't understand with the phone is the customization and how they seem to be really pushing that as if it is some revolutionary thing. From my understanding this amounts to choosing the color of the back plate, front face and you can engrave the back plate with you email.... Maybe they think this will be a big hit with mainstream consumers but I don't see this as that big of a deal. I suppose it is kind of nice being able to pick the colors and what not as it makes it more personalized and makes people think that it is 'their' phone and is different than everyone else's.
Unfortunately I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I won't be looking to replace my Gnex just yet but if I were I think the Moto X would definitely be at the top of my list. And even when I am eligible I still might consider the Moto X seeing as I would probably be able to get it at a pretty decent price.
At&t pricing off contract is $575 and $630 for 16 and 32 GB models. There's a possibility that a Google Play edition could come in at a lower price point, but I'm not that optimistic about that considering the GPE One and S4 pricing. Google and Motorola have both stated that there will not be any special allowances made to Moto phones and that they're "just another manufacturer" to Google.

Technically we don't know true pricing, just at&ts pricing. They have no incentive to make it cheaper than the s4. I'm not sure how much control manufacturers have over carrier pricing. Remember the Nexus 4 was originally selling for more at T-Mobile than Google Play.

I ended up buying a Galaxy Note 2 off contract on Verizon. I wanted to keep my unlimited data and the moto x was a pretty big let down.
The G2 and the Note 3 have my attention though.
I will say the Galaxy Nexus is by far the longest i've ever owned a smartphone and overall it is a great device. The battery life and reception are my only two complaints but overall the phone is a beast.

But where did you see that?
I'll end up getting the Oppo Find 5 or its' successor when it comes out. Don't get me wrong the Moto X is a nice phone, but the price to performance ratio sucks. They made the Moto X for consumers, with more fancy software witchcraft, they did not make it for us geeks.

It has the same gpu as the s4,so it wins all graphics tests since it has less pixels to push. This also helps put it close in most overall tests. It's not the same setup as the Nexus 4, despite all the ignorant posts in comment sections.

HTC one vs moto x . Which should I get

I am either going to get the HTC one or moto x but I am really on the fence about which is better for me. I really care about battery and data connectivity moztly. I would like to root and use custom roms if either allows that. I did see the HTC one beats the moto x in display sharpness but the moto x beats in brightness which is important to me. What do you guys suggest?

TBH, I would take the MotoX right now. I like the size of the MotoX, the always on features, and the battery life on it. I think it'd be a better choice for me based on the fact that I do not game as much as I used to.
I was in your boat about a month ago and the real selling point to me was the design, speakers and the camera on the HTC one. And it's a powerhouse with impressive battery life. Plus the TV app is prett neat. Aside from all that, the features on the X seem much more practical and it's a great price.
That is such a toss up right now. I think I would go with the Moto X, I really like the active notifications.
But don't get me wrong,.I love my HTC One.

I have the One on Verizon, and my girlfriend has the Moto X on Verizon.
I love the build quality, solid feel, front facing speakers, and Sense UI of the One. It is an awesome phone, my only real critiques are the camera, that it doesn't have a 3 soft-touch-button layout like my old DNA, and that ViperONE isn't officially supported yet
However, Motorola is on fire with the Moto X, I have to admit. It is an awesome "daily driver" phone, and Motorola is hitting a grand slam with their fast updates, the way they are updating some of the native apps through the Play Store, etc, they are just doing an awesome job with this phone. I've never really liked Motorola or their phones, but I have to acknowledge that I really like what I'm seeing from them and hope that other manufacturers catch on.
I like not only the ideas that Motorola is implementing with the Moto X, as mentioned above, but the actual product itself. It is a very nice quality feeling phone, with good build quality, the perfect size, and excellent performance. I haven't ever been tempted this much by a non-HTC phone..if I could snag one for <$300 on Craigslist, I would probably pick one up to flirt with.
I didn't buy into the Moto X hype until my girlfriend ordered a Motomaker Moto X, and I've got to toy around with it. I see what all the hype is about now.
I guess I can't believe I am saying this, as an HTC fan, but Moto X. I think it will offer the best day to day performance for the average user, with the least amount of bugs or hiccups. If you consider yourself a power user, grab the One.
Not sure how soon you're considering it, but at this point we might only be 2-4 months from the HTC M8 (successor to the One), and it could be worth the wait? Keep that in mind.. although who knows how long we'd have to get that phone on Verizon.

I got the Diztronic clear case for my lady.
The HTC one is my preference. I am VERY interested in the MotoX I wish I had one to play around with, if I had the extra cash I'd easily grab it for a "back-up"/bring to concerts so I don't hurt my htc one lol, but I have played with it and reallllly enjoyed it.
Also not a big moto guy, first (smart) phone was OG Moto, which i exchanged within the 30 days (the good old days before crApple) and got the HTC Eris, that started my HTC Love.
But I would honestly also highly suggest looking into both deeply and consider the options, I know Moto usually has boot strap which is pretty amazing, but HTC one is s-off (well unfortunately not anymore until the new OTA gets/if updated..)
so yea, this is a tough one
I also hate saying it, but I am interested in the Samsung Galaxy S5, if made from metal like the rumors, would be a much bigger competitor to HTC.
I still prefer HTC, but I thoroughly enjoyed both the SG3, and SG4. Both un-expectedly phones I loved and won't sell. Unless maybe to fund the MotoX, might be time to dump s4 for the MotoX, but the sg3 will be one of those phones like the HTC One, that just won't even get sold.
Keep in mind that another great option is the Droid Maxx--if you want great battery life. It is basically the same phone as the Moto X with a better battery and better build quality, but no motomaker.
But I think other than the battery the One is a much better phone. Best option now is to wait until the M8 or the galaxy s5 is out.

I have been asking myself this question a lot lately.
I'm loving my One, but I've had to work really hard to get the battery to something even half way decent. I'd love to play with an X for an extended period to see how much different the ergonomics, speed and screen quality are for me.
But it sounds like all of the X converts are very pleased. Either way, I'm sure you can't go wrong.

OP - I realize that last bit I wrote wasn't actually helpful in any fashion. My apologies.
However, you said you're mainly concerned with battery life and data connectivity. I think with that being the case, you'd be happier with the X. By most accounts, battery life is phenomenal with high screen times, and the Motorola Radio's are typically some of the best I've used for signal and speed.
Don't let the specs on paper fool you either. Even though the X has a 720p display, it's still a fantastic screen. Also, just from playing with a couple of the X's my friends own, it's one of the most comfortable devices I've held lately. And the X8 architecture seems to be about as responsive as my One in most every task.
The X definitely has things well figure out from what I have seen and with what seems to be substantially more longevity vs the One, it may be the route you want to go.

Nows your chance Toro People (VZW GNEX)

Those on toro have probably struggled with the decision of what verizon device to move to. Well now the dev edition moto x 32GB is only 379.99 on verizon. I made the move a few weeks ago when it was 449.99 and couldn't be happier. Battery life is a gigantic improvement, phone is so much smoother and it has essentially stock kit kat. There are several new devs coming to this phone and CM is very close to being stable. Theres also no comparison between the screen quality. Both are amoled but the moto x's screen is full rgb, and unlike the galaxy nexus, whites are great out of the box (better than I could ever manually set myself on the gnex), and the grey-scale gradients aren't that nasty greenish brown color or purple at low brightness. Its also atleast twice as bright yet uses half the power. Overall its a gigantic improvement and don't use the shortcomings of the galaxy nexus screen to write off the latest amoled panels. This one is top notch. Lastly and importantly, the reception on the Verizon Moto X is nothing short of astounding compared to the galaxy nexus or even my friends galaxy note 3. Even in my friends basement where his note 3 only got 3g the Moto X had strong 4g signal and didn't drain battery rapidly. Compared to the galaxy nexus its a gigantic improvement. Probably the best reception on any current generation Verizon smartphone.

Cool story bro.

...But now that Motorola is a Lenovo company, we've yet to see the future of software updates for Moto X and G... What a pain. Even as a Chinese that lives in China, I disrespect Lenovo for this and most things they've done.

Why, because its lenova? If so, what's the bad? The software ? If that's the case, ROMs should solve your problems

I'm happy with lenovo... Not sure about their phones but I always recommend people buy their laptops. I'd get a moto X but I still want a Nexus device. Waiting to see if verizon ever gets another Nexus device. If they take my unlimited away I will move to another carrier for a Nexus device.

I do not see this phone on the VZW website and the Motorola website says $449.99. Where did you find it for that price?

This. Lenovo makes great laptops -- something that can't be said of many laptop manufacturers. Have they ever manufactered android phones? We will just have to wait and see how they are about software updates as they take over the MOTO mobile division. I hope they don't go down the bloatware route as bad as Samsung has on their non-nexus products.

I switched providers and got a n5. One that vzw will never get their hands on.

May Finally Leave Droid Line

Being a Big Turbo fan - I think I moving on to an HTC 10 - Since Google hired them to produce the next Nexus line it is time to leave Moto. Have to tell ya I have 4 Turbo 2's - 2 of them had bad mics and the 4th I believe has bad mics. I think Motos quality control sucks and to get any issues fix is like pulling teeth now. I am just tired of lack of quality of these phones. I have had a refresh and just not totally happy with the Turbo 2 performance.

I hear you and I don"t blame you.
I had the Droid X, Droid Maxx, Droid Turbo, and Droid Turbo 2 and probably the best one out of the lot imo was the Droid X. Not specs wise, but I had the least bit of trouble out of that particular phone than all the rest of them. However, I have grown weary of Verizon handcuffing their phones and me having to sit around and wait for updates, root exploits, etc. So, I have dumped Verizon's locked down phones and have gotten myself an unlocked gsm phone and am using it on T-Mobile. I have already rooted it, partitioned my sd card and am using it with link2sd plus. Feels great to once again truly own my phone.
Yeah I cannot go T-Mobile and will not be doing that I am an Unlimited Data guy, I just going to keep my T2 for now but I am going to try the HTC10 - I hate Samsung and only like 5.2 or smaller screens so LG's are out. Just frustrated with Moto

^^^+1 Totally agree, I'd suggest buying unlocked and unbranded from now on. I thought I could take going to a DT2 from a Nexus 6. Long story short, I could not. I got my unlocked Moto X Pure from Swappa yesterday. Goodbye DT2 forums, it's been unproductive.
I'm like you loved droids now not so much. Between Verizon and moto updates suck and warranty issues are horrendous. I would wait for the htc nexus devices before getting the htc 10. At least see what they offer.

Hot the HTC 10 quality is so much better than T2 - I switch phones a lot cost no object - I love the size and the quality of audio. I miss the battery life a little but I got so fed up with Moto. Not only that my shatterproof screen now has a soft dent in it - I had a screen protector too. I will probably get a Nexus if they co,e 5.2 or smaller
Experiencing likewise disappointment, can not get smart lock to work at all, all calls received and initiated go to speed dial, can't easily block numbers, moto voice is junk, tolerating those minors. Most recent, no music over Bluetooth, and the one I'm not able to tolerate, hand set silents notifications so I'm missing texts and calls. I'll be watching the HTC released also, thanks for mentioning those upcoming models. This DDT2 just seems sub par to all my previous Motorola models....And seems like monthly security or other software updates with improvements are non existent.

On top of all had a screen protector and saw a small dent in it, removed it and guess what that shatterproof lens is soft plastic, it has 1/8" soft indenture in it - right in the middle of the screen. I called Moto and demanded they replace it, just a joke that they put a lens on a phone that actually indents. They wanted me to pay for a new one and I told them now way. I am selling my phone probably but I want it to be perfect for the buyer and it is not. I truly believe the 4th device I got still has some mic issues or proximity issues. Shipped it back Fed Ex (aka they sent me labels ground cheapos) - Now seeing the new Motos being announced and everything is 5.5" screens I am kind of happy I left. The 5.2" is the sweet spot for me. Not saying I will not be back but I was not happy with the all around performance, design and quality of the T2. Tried the Kevlar and Soft grip and very slippery as well.

I"ve been fortunate to not have any problems with my DT2. The overall performance of my DT2 is incredibly fast and stable. No lag, everything seems to operate just fine. But lately, I've noticed the battery life is less than stellar. I can't seem to find out why my battery drains so fast. I have only played tunein radio for about an hour, made a few texts, asked Google a question, and ZERO phone calls. Took the fully charged DT2 off the charger at about 8 am and it is 11:52 am now. My battery is at 70 %.
I do however run PIA (private internet access) and I a, hoping that is what is killing it. Though it shows very little usage, I'm hoping that is it.
Oh yeah, last night I took some 4K video of my girl's bday for about 6 minutes and my phone was on FIRE!!! Holy cow that thing got hot fast! Guess I'll stick to regular HD video since I don't have a 4K player anyway.
I do not blame you to.
I sold my MXF couple days ago and I'm receiving the SGS7 Edge tomorow!
Had to decide between the SGS7 Edge and the HTC 10.
I think I decided well to cancel my pre order of the HTC 10, because of their constantely delaying.
Users who own both they say sgs7 edge wins over the htc. display, camera, battery, etc.
Me too. I now own an awesome Nexus 6p, and I'm not looking back. Now the only problem is selling the damn thing. Droids are tough to sell since mostly phone geeks buy used phones and the Droid brand is now mostly reviled by them.
It also sucks that the used value for the turbo 2 is so low. These are $624 phones, and they're going for around $350. Why??

This is my first Droid. Love the styling, love the performance, but they just cracked the bootloader on the Note4, so Ill probably go back to that.
I just pick up another set on eBay for 300.

The speakerphone just plain sucks on the dt2. I really can't wait to get rid of this phone. I can't wait to check out the htc nexus. Really digging the htc 10.
