No need to root just unlock your bootloader first.

is it okay to update the software using the PC companion if I already rooted my phone or should I unroot it first before updating it?

No need to unroot, but to be on safe side do unroot if you want, but it is not necessary.

unroot option in supersu Will do or should we uproot using any other method?

Anyone got the new album update on Xperia M dual?
I got notification from update center this morning.
Since then I'm trying to download it and it says " could not download "
I didn't unlock my bootloader, however the device is rooted.
But I don't think root will affect the update center...
Anybody have similar issue?

I had the same problem yesterday but today it worked for me. My phone is rooted too. If you want you can update in manually. Just download from this thread and install it as normal app http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/themes-apps/4-1-sony-media-apps-t2598435

is it neccessary to have a custom rom to be able to use Link2SD and similar apps ? i have stock rom (c2005 4.2.2) and want to install apps on SD card by default.

99% sure you'll be fine with the stock ROM as long as you have root access on your phone.
You don't need a modified ROM/Kernel to use Link2SD and root access only means su access to your existing ROM.
I have a stock XPERIA C1905 (Single-SIM) with root access and use Link2SD.
I still have approx 1.5GB of space available on my internal sdcard0 even with approx 20-30 applications installed.
Remember to use instructions for a C2005 (Dual-SIM) as there are many Singe-SIM Rooting and Link2SD guides around which may not apply to a C2005.

Thanks bro, you were right as i am using link2SD without any problem. i just created second FAT32 partition on the external SDcard and used link2SD successfuly.
now another question! any way to install custom recovery without unlocking bootloader and wiping data? i want to make a Nandroid backup of the current device state.
device is fully rooted.

I know all the guides say to use FAT32 format for your second partition, but you can use ext3 if you want.
ext3 gives you many file access benefits over FAT32.
I've used both MiniTool and EaseUS file partition tools without problems to format a second ext3 partition with default cluster size .
I have a QNAP NAS so I can easily access ext3 partitioned files, but access without an ext3/ext4 application on a Windows PC becomes restrictive.
Just something to be aware of if backing up second partition files to a PC or something when not using FAT32 format.
And we can now purchase Link2SD Plus and pay it forward to the developer for making our XPERIA M usable.

The steps in all the threads and the videos are the same, the only difference is the recovery used. There seem to be different versions and types of recoveries circulating here so new comers to the grand community get confused
Either way, first thing you need to decide is which ROM you prefer and accordingly you can upgrade or not
unofficial CM10.1.3 by patwip is stable and only supports 4.1.2 firmware
GENNXT ROM is a stock based boosted ROM with lots of ported apps that runs on 4.2.2 firmware (there is also a 4.1.2 version of it but it's dated)
This is the main and original recovery thread with both 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 recoveries, use the tar files while rooting since they can used with Odin, the zip files is for when you are switching from a different custom recovery like philz or twrp or different variant of cwm

Both are equally easy if done right. But you are gonna stick to firmware for now, I'd suggest go for 4.2.2 as it has certain improvements in looks and battery that you might enjoy

The method I'm referring to installs a recovery, then in steps 10 and 12 I've asked to flash two files. The first is two give the recovery certain permissions, so it doesn't revert to stock on each boot and can flash files, and the second is the commonly used root app, superSU 1.65 to give your apps root access
worked perfectly
thanks buddy

DON'T FORGET to use this after that, otherwise the phone will reboot whenever you try to remount /system as RW (required by almost all root apps)
not facing any remount issue though.
I have not faced any remount issue after following the above process. Btw im using Xperia M(C1904) crossflashed 15.2.A.2.5 (from Xperia M Dual), n Smartdevil kernel.

That's why you don't get this problem. The stock kernel includes the ric binary in the RAM disk, if your bootloader is locked and you try to remount /system as rw, ric will reboot your phone. The fix I linked was made by NUT and consists in marking ric a non-executable file every time you power on your phone, so it won't get executed and doesn't reboot your device after remounting :good:

[Q] Reboot fix not working for Xperia M dual C2004 build 15.2.A.2.5

I want to swap internal-external sdcard or mount folder app so that I can play big games with large data. For this, I rooted my phone with Impactor, and tried remount reboot fix by NUT and reboot fix by Anto Kus. But till now the phone reboots on using folder mount. Also my phone reboots while using a dual partitioned sdcard to use it with Link2sd. I have tested root checker which shows phone is rooted. I am using Titanium Backup without any problems. Should I go for bootloader unlock?
My phone xperia m dual c2004, 4.2.2, build 15.2.A.2.5.

No, you don't need to unlock your bootloader to get full root access. Try this updated version of the reboot fix and then you're fully rooted...
Unlocking your bootloader will give you full root access without using root tools, exploits, etc., but many proprietary Sony apps will not work anymore because your DRM keys will be wiped when you unlock the bootloader...

I have already backed up bootloader using TA backup and got bootloader key from Sony website. But can I claim warranty, if I restore locked bootloader? Or warranty is void, not reversible.

Ya, I know about the cons of unlocking bootloader. Thats why I am still waiting for other ways. I have also tried the fix by NUT from the forum which u gave link but still not fully rooted as it is unable to write in system folder. But other root operations like removing bloatware is done without any problems. Thats strange. Busybox is installed by NUT which supports part of the fix but the other scripts did not work in system.
By the your xm dual c2004 was updated to build 15.2.A.2.5 or is it from out of box like mine?

May be later. I dont wanna unlock bootloader now.
You need to go back to 4.2 and use NUTS method to flash to 4.3 with root
Unlocking bootloader makes us to lose DRM keys. But to backup ta partition, rooting is required. To root, bootloader unlocking is required. Wtf
Downgrade is only option mate
Sent from my C6502 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So hw can i backup my TA?
Simple steps:
1. Downgrade to 4.2.2 (67 firmware) by flashing the ftf file of your region. Search the ZL thread to find your ROM on 67 fw.
2. Root the 67 firmware by bin4ry's method or cubeundcube method.
3. Make a TA backup using DevShaft's method. This is important for relocking your bootloader.
4. Upgrade to 101 using PCC or SUS. You will lose root. Make a ftf file of the update files that has been downloaded to your computer using flashtool.
5. Unlock bootloader from Sony. You will lose DRM.
6. Flash a custom kernel by Doomlord or Gustavo RD78. This is a modified stock kernel with cwm recovery built-in.
7. Now download the latest 1.94 update super su.zip from chainfire's website. Store it in your ext micro SD card. Flash it to root your phone from the cwm recovery.
8. To get back to stock recovery, use the ftf file created at step 4 above. Flash only the kernel and fotakernel from the ftf file.
9. Now relock your bootloader by flashing the ta backup you made at step 3. Now your phone is rooted with locked bootloader on 101 firmware.
10. Enjoy!
I made a similar help thread for Sony Xperia Z here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2656698.
Go though the thread except using the custom kernel in that thread. That kernel is Z specific. For the ZL use the advanced stock kernel by Doomlord or Gustavo RD78 in the dev section. Link for kernel for ZL is here:

Kingo steals your IMEI and phone information while it roots. Some malware package is dropped onto your phone ( a long alpha numeric gibberish folder name with a dot in the begining to hide it). The folder is copied onto your phone's external SD card as well as onto your internal memory. This folder contains a .nomedia file sized 80 bytes, which is funny 'coz all nomedia files are 0 byte files. The file has some code stored in it, which is very suspicious. Avoid Kingo, vroot and all such Chinese fly-by night closed-source root methods that require an internet connection to root your phone.

Ok, sounds enough arguments for at least try another method. By the time I was rooting my device (a couple of months ago), kingo was the only method I could get my unlocked bootloader phone to keep root after upgrading to latest firmware through OTA (it was .569 back then). If someone is willing to point me (while I look by myself) to the method you followed to get root on a .101 firmware with a locked bootloader (mine can't be unlocked, AFAIK) I'll be more than glad!
Thanks for your comments.

Will we get root for 4.4 anyway? Aren't our dear developers (like the good @DooMLoRD) interested in helping us anymore?

root for locked bootloader c6506 on 10.1.1.a.1.253

HI Everyone I am trying to swap my internal memory with external sd but the thread I am reading says it will only work on 4.1.2. So I downloaded the ftf and installed it but when I try to get root, Doomskernal method says it is not supported. I also tried to use NUT's prerooted rom but he has closed the thread so I cannot download it.
this is what iam trying to do

Does anyone know of a method for gettiing root on Xperia ZL 10.1.1.a.1.253 on a locked bootloader?
Or a method to get my 64gb sd switched to use as my internal, I have tried a few methods but it does not,
here is some of what i tried:
