[Q] Dev support on this device? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people,
I am currently searching for the best tablet around. All it has to be is some good specs, nice resolution and good value.
I would love to get an ipad mini retina ... but in my country its so expensive. So, my next option seems to be the LG G Pad 8.3 because of its strong specs and mostly nice screen size and resolution.
My question is... will any devs work on it? I would love extra support and some custom stuff to play with.
CM Rom for it would be lovely but it seems like a dream.

Yeah, a Dev just picked up one and said he is going to be working on a CM11 port for this device. I heard it was the dev or one of the devs that worked on the HP Touchpad. We have TWRP and CWM ready to roll when it hits.
btw questions go in the Q and A section (for future reference )

Also, try looking in the subforum for Android development to get an idea of what's going on.

Thank you for the replies guys.
I apologize for posting in the wrong section, I didn't use the xda forums for long and posted in a rush.
So, yeah I saw the dev, he seems pretty good and thats nice. It such a pitty if that tablet will not have xda support.
I don't see any great disadvantages with it... just the price.. but still its not that bad.

My bad.. I meant support from xda developers by the means that some devs will make custom ROMS etc..
Also, I would like to see more people in this forum section exchanging ideas and helping each other to solve any kind of issues.

My personal opinion is that you should get a Nexus 7 because they get the best support. The LG is not bad but the Nexus devices always get the best dev support as they are considered dev devices.

What you say is right.. but I am not touching the nexus because its screen is so smaaaall - sadly.
And I can't wait for another 3,5,8 months who knows for the new Nexus. So, I probably have to go with this one, it seems the best option.

I wouldn't cal a 5 inch screen small, but I currently have a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 7, but hey, I prefer the portability, so all I need is 7 inches, and I can use a keyboard and mouse for things that need more accuracy, but I have never been a fan of phablets or iPad size tablets.....

You need a keyboard on n7?

If dev support and long-time updateability are important to you, buy ONLY devices which sell very well and where development is already in full swing.
All else is futile.
Devices which sell only smaller numbers are quickly not getting manufacturer updates anymore, and the probability that there's a dev who has the device is very low.
I'm usually absolutely not the kind of guy who does what all people do - on the contrary, I despise those "sheep". But with Android devices, this is the way to go, period.

I also have a couple of N7s and they are excellent with superb support. However, the G Pad doesn't seem much bigger, yet the screen is very noticeably bigger.

dude.,there's a lot of thread about this..just scroll down little bit..you'll find it somehow
The Nexus S was released in 2010.
It got 4.1.
I'm %100 certain the Galaxy Nexus will get 4.2 (a "small" upgrade from 4.1).
Stop these threads and brighten up already..
For sure

[Q] Anyone Heard of any Developers?

has anyone heard of any developers that have shown interest in creating Rom's for this tab? I am very interested from the spec point of view in the 8.4, but I do not like the sense UI and would want a speedy rom for it, but it does not look like much is happening on here. I know this is a new tab, but that is a sticking point for me before buying. If not this then I think I will wait for the galaxy tab 8 (rumored), the specs on it look great as well and it will have good support from google updating the base software so I think it will have a good development forum. Any thoughts?

We just got recovery so something should happen soon if at all. Crpalmer has Cyanogenmod 11 working on this tab. It is an expensive tablet so it will not get much interest due to the price.

It is a darn great tablet spec wise though, it looks like it could handle anything you threw at it. I am really salivating over it, I wish I was a better coder to be able to create some roms myself.
With crpalmer's CM 11, anyone wanting to develop their own AOSP ROM, or port another, should have a relatively easy time of it, since kernel is already built.

[Q] Any timeframe for CM11 or AOSP suppost for this tablet?

Not sure if this has been answered already, and Im very appreciative of all devs here on XDA, but ive been holding of buying this tablet because as I love samsung's HW, touchwiz is a big nono, and such a flagship does surely deserve a CM11 or AOSP support....the question is whether work has begun or not.
Cheers and thanks y'all
A CM11 port already exists. Don't hope for anything officially of course.

Which one? The T-700 or T-800? There's a mostly working CM ROM for the T-700, the T-800 has a port of that and most things work. I fear it's going to be a while, if ever, that we get a fully working AOSP ROM for the T-800.

any idea why? sammy's hw is usually a dream to work on and unlocking bootloaders and such was easy...what happened?
and im interested in the T-800 btw
I took a gamble on getting the 10.5 and it has been a pretty mediocre experience so far. There is an awesome AOSP Rom (which may be CM11 now) for the T700, but nothing for the T800 lately, it seems to be dead in the water. Suzook took the time to port it for us T800 users, but something he was doing was against the rules on XDA so that shut it down
Using ThunderRom now, but TouchWiz ruins the device for me. Also battery is pretty bad.
It is still an ok tablet but I am curious to see what will become of development on Samsung products since they are starting to use non Snapdragon chipsets on certian products now.

thats the reason why im holding back. I work at an electronics store and tried the tablet a few times....the software is so bloated and all those pseudo-magazine fx stuff they got going on is def not working. I really dont like how they change the overall feel of android, like placing the apps button on the bottom right, maybe intuetive but having spent 3 yrs on a CM rom, you get used to certain stuff. Also, with all this dev in HW, and touchwiz still feeling laggy, i dont see why sammy is continuing down this path
Just run Nova launcher then. No big deal.

And it's pretty obvious it's not just about the launcher. Touchwiz permeates the entire OS in a way that stinks up and clogs up EVERYTHING.

They have been using Exynos in the past way before they caved in to Snapdragon temporarily.
My guess is they're looking to squeeze more profits by using their own SOCs.

Apparently CM doesn't like Exynos processors, which the 10.5 has, so there aren't any official CM builds just ported ROMs. It's completely possible to get CM on the 10.5, as we've seen, we just need a dedicated and knowledgeable developer to work on getting the ROM to work 100%.
At least we have root to stop or remove the crap we don't need until an overrated or fix this and break that rom comes along....until then root, pull out what you don't want, and slap Nova on it.

That is a crutch that gives you the placebo effect of making it way faster. Bottom line it is TouchWiz that bogs this down, so until a true AOSP or CM comes out, you won't will see a major improvement.
It looks like dev is never going to happen for this tablet.

I used to think the same exact way until I purchased this one,now I still have my beloved Nexus 5 and my Samsung Tab S 8.4 so I'm not completely tainted.
After owning Android for over 8 years what you mention above is exactly why I have become board with Android.
I've mentioned it before in past threads how dry and plain the Roms have become sense 5.0
No one builds from complete scratch anymore, just look at the credits, commits.
Other than stock Roms Cyanogenmod is always the base witch means out the gate your Camera and sound won't work.

It's a matter of preference and philosophy. Most of us want an excellent experience and there are trade-offs regardless of whether you run stock or unlock/root and install custom roms or hacks. In my case T-Mobile wifi calling has recently become an essential feature because of signal strength problems in my house, so I'm pretty much confined to using T-Mobile branded stock devices. Before this I always rooted and installed roms, but I can't say I miss the added control and functionality (too much, anyway). I still prefer Android to iPhone because I feel there is more feature selectivity, but I understand the OPs position and hope his iPhone serves him well. Best of luck!

P2 - Worth buying?

I have some questions plz answer these -
1. Does it have 2.5 D glass
2. How good is the display i.e. are blacks deep like Samsung phones considering it has an amoled display
3. How is the build quality?Had any scratches
4. How good is development for this phone ,I mean I have Mi4 and still is well developed Can I expect these to be developed for at least 2 - 3 years.
5.Is camera that bad ?
1. No.
2. IMO yes.
3. Superb. No wiggle room anywhere.
4. TBH quite bad at the moment compared to other devices. It seems like progress is being made although very slowly. The stock ROM is decent enough to warrant using it in the meantime though.
5. It's bad. God... So bad.
The display is amazing, i didn't want to purchase another Amoled screen ever again since the Samsung Galaxy Nexus but this phone is worth it.
Even though the build is great with an all metal build.. you should still get a case and screen protector to keep it shiny.
I'm sure development will get much better, there is no rush. After reading around the forums it seems the Roms are usable.. but hey.. it is a lot better than the Dev for the Zenfone Max. They have troubles with no offline charging and phone doesn't turn on when battery reach 0%, so users have to keep it above 5% in order to not semi brick it. This device don't have those bugs.. so that's good.
Also another good thing is that they have numerous Roms and am glad that they update the Lineage 13 Roms too, but Stock Rom is just as fine.
Until Lenovo fully stops updating soon; probably by September 2018.. using Custom Roms would be ideal to update when it happens. That would be my suggestion.

From a technical perspective it seems like a great device indeed. But you are correct. Moto & Redmi (I guess Huawei too) are more widely-spread. However (speaking for me and the local market) compared to the best available version of Moto G5, this phone has slightly better technical specifications (+1gb ram) for the same price.
Dude, I really hope, that I will enjoy this phone as much as my old G2 and my ancient Galaxy S. :fingers-crossed:
