My device - GT-N7100
ROM- N7100XXUEMK4_N7100ODDEMK1_N7100DDEMJ9_HOME.tar http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536423
Official stock 4.3 knox enabled rom
So today i flashed this rom and and when i wanted to root the rom it was very difficult to find a guide to do it, but somehow i managed to root it by taking instructions from few separate threads and i thought of sharing it with others who are facing the same problem.
It was very hard to find how to manually root after flashing 4.3 stock rom and so i wanted to gather what i've learned from few threads and put em into a 1 thread as a guide. Hope this helps
What you will need
1> philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5

Step 1
> boot into download mode
start odin3 as administrator and put philz_touch_xxx.md5 into PDA
connect phone in download mode to PC via USB
press start to flash the tar.md5 package
Phone should restart after the process.
Step 2
>Put "DrKetan_MultiTool_AdvanceV6.zip" into external memory and Reboot to Philz recovery
Now flash Multi tool using "instal zip from external sd"
Now go to Aroma file manager>System>App
Now add .bak extension to all knox related apk files Ex-Knox.apk > Knox.apk.bak
NOTE- make sure you don't change anything else you are only supposed to rename knox related apk files
Now exit Aroma and reboot ( don't do anything else)
Step 3
>- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
after your phone boots it will show "Unfortunately super SU stopped working" Ignore it and go to step 4
Step 4
>Reboot to recovery (Philz), [ If CF auto root has activated your stock recovery do the STEP 1 again to get the Philz recovery ]
Now flash "DrKetan_MultiTool_AdvanceV6.zip" again
And this time go to
Proceed with Multi tool > Skip root inject page (do not change system status) > now in the next page you get to select if you want to remove knox from the system so now Select to remove knox from system and then save and reboot. ( This will disable all the knox related stuff in the system)
after your phone boots it will show "Unfortunately super SU stopped working" Ignore it and go to step 5
Step 5
>So now just go to Play store and update your Super SU and open it and it might ask you weather to instal script in NORMAL mode or CWM
i did CWM and it worked, didn't try normal mode so i suggest you to try CWM as well.
That's it you're permanently rooted and Superuser will act as a system app
Now your Super SU should be working

Try downloading Root checker or titanium backup and see if they work, They should work.
I'm not exactly sure if this would work for everyone but this worked for me so i just shared it with everyone hoping this would help others. And i will not be help responsible for any damage that cause, try it at your own risk .. anyway rooting and everything is risky so if you're up for it only try it.

NOTE- If you factory reset the phone it will show you that "super user stopped working" o something like that, Just hit ok and open PLAYSTORE and update your superSU again and you have a Running superSU again that's it Your root is permanent Don't ever worry about that
Extra Info for Beginners You can only flash and 4.3 based roms using Philz recovery 5.xx & don't try to flash 4.4 based roms using Philz 5.xx as the flash will fail giving an Error. Use Philz recovery 6.xx to flash android 4.4 based roms
PS- You can only restore nandroid backups using philz 6.xx versions and if you restore nandroid backup using 5.xx version you will be stuck on samsung LOGO.. if u accidentally do this and stuck on samsung logo, don't panic.Press and hold power button and turn off the phone. Then boot into download mode and flash philz 6.xx via ODIN PC and restore your nandroid backup again and your phone will boot up You can flash philz 5 versions over 6 and 6 versions over 5 using odin anytime. no problem there.

EXTRA (try this if the above method doesn't work for you )

1st flash cf - autoroot... after rooting process over (after flashing phone restarts and starts rooting process after completion phone restarts again..)
2nd then flash philz touch.... now try it .... phone will load ur custom recovery.. then use Multi tool for deknox....
( remember dont root ur phone with multitool.. u already rooted it with cf autoroot)

Important NOTICE- This will not work if you did one or all 3 OTA updates which are specifically 14MB, 62MB and 21MB they come as system stability updates but once you update using them they activate Auto stock recovery system which will lock your recovery to the stock unless you root the device and remove the specific file from system root. So please don't give my post bad ratings or complain that this is not working if you've updated the phone using small OTA updates mentioned above.
To get rid of this problem you can flash the stock rom again and do this method without doing the OTA updates (IT will work)

Follow the instruction to flash , DO NOT DO OTA UPDATES after u flash it.
Now you can start the rooting procedure mentioned below and 100% guaranteed it works if you do everything as i've adviced

Yes, It counts when you flash the CWM via Odin PC
but without a custom recovery you can't use super SU as it keeps on force closing due to knox
Anyway once you root your phone your warranty is void right ? so why worry about knox counters

I thought your steps here could avoid the knox trip...
if that so, your step could be shorten to easier method...
1st... flash cf auto root by odin
2nd... update supersu apk
3rd... download root browser from playstore, and by using root browser you can change all knox app apk to apk.bak
easier n simpler...

I know, i tried so many quick methods to root mine this INU 4.3 rom and every time it failed, most of the time my root was gone after rebooting the phone , so i mixed up the info i got from many quick root methods and did it all to make a permanent root.
just posted this here to help anyone who faced the same problem like me

And even if you rename all the KNOX related apk files there are some files that doesn't directly say they are knox but they run in the system and it used to cause my Super SU to crash and that's why i have mentioned an extra step to go to Dr.Katen's toolkit and select to remove all knox related stuff, it really cleans the whole system from knox 200%

no no no... what I mean here, u r using cf auto root... so no need to flash multitools just to get rid the knox apk... I dont see rooting via cf auto root will give any prob... only that, the knox will trip...
2 steps saved here.... no need to flash custom recovery (only flash recovery if decide to flash custom rom) and no need to flash multitools...
no offence, im just giving an option here... a simpler option...

you know what... after u update superSU, u will be prompted about the knox thing and it's just by clicking "yes" button all knox related stuff will be cleaned... ???

hahah thanks for that info, case the 1st time i tried Super SU after the update it didn't promote me to to get rid of knox so i didn't know abot that
anyway it's good to know. did you flash a custom rom ?
i wanted to flash a custom rom but the stock 4.3 is very battery friendly and very good in terms of ram management. if you know any rom except ditto v3.2 be sure to share

im on pheonix 16.7 now... before was on jellykatv2 and jellykatv3... also tried z ized 240dpi... it's hard for me to recommend any rom though cos they are all good... in terms of battery, yes I must admit the stock one is damn good battery save... but custom rom have extra note3 features... arrrghhhhhh im so confused which and which... battery or note3 features...

Yeah.. battery in stock rom is pretty sweet I get more thsn 17 hours daily
But looking for a custom rom to use with less bloat wear
I've tried ditto 3.2 but it used too much ram

I got this to work finally using your instructions at the top of this thread - the 'easy' way didn't work of just applying the root zip (CF-Auto-Root-t03g-t03gxx-gtn7100.zip) to my stock 4.3 GT-N7100 Note 2 - I kept getting the FC's on superSU and the Knox security reports.
I then followed your steps and got a lot further, Knox seemed to be removed fine. I still couldn't get the SuperSU app to update correctly, so i booted the Note 2 into the phils recovery file manager and used it to replace the existing superuser.apk file located in /system/apps/ with the one mentioned & linked to in the comments in this thread - then restarted.
This allowed me to go to the play store, and perform an 'update' on the app (prior the only option the Play store was giving me on the SuperSU app was 'open', not update) , which then worked - great
Now rooted, no knox, new bootloader and seems faster too! 1 day in and all is well.

I prefer omega custom ROM. That is based from stock ROM, with more less bloatware as well. :good:

This is for GT-N7100
All links are for GT-N7100 and I recomand philz 5.15 ..which is in the link as it is the most stable version
It doesn't support kit kat roms. If u want to flash kit kat roms u need philz 6.18
I have never tried 4.9 u mentioned

I haven't tried any custom roms on this 4.3 rom yet but Phoenix rom comes highly recomanded. DITTO rom is also good but it comes with too much bloat which consumes about 1.1 gb ram just for the system.
Try Pheonix rom. If u like

Wait.. did yountey flashing the philz tar.md5 using the stock recovery? If YES.. no u can't flash it in recovery
Open pc odin and click pda thennselect your philzxxxxx.md5 file
Put your phone into download mode
Turn off the phone. Then press power+volume down+menu at once
Then connect phone to pc and after odin recognize ur phone click start in odin and u shoukd have a running philz custom recovery

POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME
at once, as soon as you see the samsung logo relese the buttons and wait till the recovery starts
it takes some time for the recovery to load

U need a small change in this steps....
Some stock roms didnt allow custom recoveries (may be the hell knox is behind this) .. its just starts its stock recovery (dont know where it comes from) instead of custom recoveries....

How to update 16 gig AT&T SGH-I747 to UCUFNE4_4.4.2

WARNING: YOU WILL PROBABLY BRICK YOUR PHONE! The possibility is very real. Samsung made it difficult to update the firmware with the introduction of Knox.
This is a full firmware update!
I'm not the best at giving directions. I do expect a certain level of knowledge and skill on your end.
I did try my best to safeguard you from bricking your phone. The install scripts will fail with an error 7 if something is wrong.
More then likely if it fails... you are on very old firmware version. I suggest you double check your bootloader version and if it is older then the latest Odin update available on http://www.sammobile.com/devices/specs/SGH-I747/ Update to DLK first.
Or try updating the firmware incrementally. If your firmware is MJ2 or below, it is safe to flash any previous firmware without fear.

Need a 16 gig AT&T I747 with a custom recovery.
usb debugging turned on.
adb and a rooted device.
proper drivers for phone installed on your pc
Knowledge of flashing and using Odin.
Checking the bootloader.
If your not sure what bootloader your on.

3. Wipe and install UCUFNE4 in custom recovery.

While working with spagman72 on debricking devices we figured out no amount of ODIN will be as effective as a full wipe in the stock S3 recovery.
A wipe in the stock S3 recovery will also fix any sdcard encryption issues as well.
Now reboot back into the stock recovery and do a factory reset.
5. Use Odin and flash your preferred custom recovery again.

For some reason it keeps failing to flash. My first attempt was in post #47 of that thread, but TWRP gave an error that the binary was incompatible (or something to that effect).
I changed the updater-binary but it still isnt working. Did you change yours? Just curious if you had any ideas. If yours preserves root though, I guess I don't need to worry about it anymore, but still wondering why it wouldnt work. If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them!

it's important that the directions are followed to a t.
I didn't replace the binary I only renamed the file and the extension from cfg to zip. then I just deleted the checks in the installer script. I didn't see anything that would get rid of root but with as easy as it is to obtain again it's really a moot issue.

Sorry, I might not have been completely clear. It wasn't yours that didn't flash, it was min in the thread I linked. Was just trying to understand why my own modded versions don't work.
The first attempt I only preserved root, and removed the recovery flash. That one was reported to error due to the binary.
Replaced it with a different binary and it seems to have other issues now. (I tried replacing the binary in one and another also removed all the file checks.)
You're right about rooting being easy enough. Just didn't think it'd be so problematic when I started with it. Anyway, no worries. Don't want to take your thread off track any more than I already have!

Open Odin
Load the TWRP tar file in the pda slot and then press start and wait for phone to reboot.
Enter recovery by holding Volume up, Home and Power or adb reboot recovery
Step 3: Flash MJB bootloaders.
If your not already on the I747UCUEMJB bootloaders then you need to update them first.
Flash this in the custom recovery we just flashed.

Reboot your phone. Hopefully all is well and your on the new bootloaders. Check again by using the code above.
Step 4: Flash stock tar file.

Reboot your phone into download mode.
Open Odin 3.0.7
IMPORTANT! Make sure only Auto Reboot and Re-Partition are checked.
Check and load the tar.md5 file in the PDA slot. Wait a minute till its done verifying the md5
Start flash and wait till the phone reboots.
You can go through the set up once the phone boots up if you want and get it out of the way.
Step 5: Flash custom recovery.
Reboot phone into download mode and repeat step 2.
Step 6: Flash OTA.
Reboot into TWRP 2.6.3.1 and flash this modified 4.4.2 OTA zip

At this point once you reboot you will have a phone that is now completely updated to TW 4.4.2
Step 7: Root.
Before you reboot out of recovery flash SuperSu.

After several unsuccessful tries at updating with the OTA, I used this routine and I have successfully updated to 4.4.2.
I had gone back to stock 4.3 using the routine in enewman's thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486 I tried with the phone rooted and unrooted. With CWM recovery and stock recovery. The phone would find the OTA update when checking for update and it would download. When I tried to run the update it would get to 24% and then fail. This morning I found this guide and found success.

if fails because it looks at the bootloader for the warranty bit info. when it sees it is tripped it stops. 24% is around that time in the script when it checks that after verifying the system integrity.

Should be fine. Worst that will happen is you'll have to go back on this when it hangs on boot or doesn't get signal/wifi.

Well I flashed the latest AICP nightly and it seems all is well.
I also flashed S3Rx but I did have to use the MJ2 kernel to get working WiFi.

For some reason TWRP won't flash. This is what I get.

It would replace your installed ROM; if you're just looking for the new modem, there's a thread that has it posted in it (sorry, I'm on mobile, or I'd dig it up for you).

So, I downloaded the new firmware from SamMobile, since I was using TWRP and the OTA wouldn't have worked.

I had to restart my download several times to get it to finally download completely. Luckily, Firefox would restart where it failed each time, so didn't have to restart from beginning each time. But, it took quite a while - several hours.
BTW, I did a full NAND backup with TWRP before I started this.
Used ODIN 3.09
Flashed once, but the bootloader and modem didn't take, so I did the double flash, and it worked.
To double flash:
Unchecked AutoReboot in ODIN
Flash the firmware once
Pull battery
Boot holding down Vol-Down button to get back to Download mode
Flash again
The problem with the single flash was my WiFi wouldn't turn on, and when I checked out the versions of the ROM, bootloader, modem using Samsung PhoneInfo from the Play Store, I saw the dreaded mis-matched versions.
Some of my partitions were still NH7. Evidently Samsung keeps a backup of some of the partitions and restores them when the phone is rebooted. Double flashing flashes overwrites this backup.
I rooted with CF-AutoRoot again, installed SuperSU, and was back to where I was.
UPDATE:
Only issue so far is that I had to clear the cache on the Play Store. Was getting a services error.

Thanks for the update. My own download from Sammobile completed successfully (miracle!) And I am considering doing a phone wipe/double flash/rebuild. May choose stock ROM and freeze the junk. I'm on MDL bootloader at the moment and a fairly old LTE modem.
Before I do anything i have to figure out how to back up my texts (in Slimkat messenger app) such that I can restore them properly into the new environment.

If you flash this firmware from SamMobile. It will overwrite your modem to the newest. It will un-root your phone. And, yes you can go directly to this version from your NB4 version.
So, after you flash this firmware you will have the newest modem. And, you will have to root your phone again.
ROM = ROM
Firmware = Modem + bootloader + ROM

frustrated foh3
This morning OTA pushed the new update to my phone and I accepted thinking there was a lollipop update finally. I had juke woken up and didn't bother to check first.
Anyway, I'm now on FOH3 and am just trying to install custom recovery on my otherwise un-molested phone. I've tried the heimdall option as well as the cf-auto root with odin 3.09 (even attempted the double flash) either I'm doing something wrong with Odin or missing a step because when I hit start I end with 0 succeeded/0 failed and it stays in download mode. When I attempt to reboot to recovery mode, I get the blue text stating booting recovery and then black screen which eventually just goes back to stock.
Is there some other method I need to try when rooting/installing trwp for FOH3?
[edit: I'm an idiot. assumed I already had debugging turned on. I did not. *facepalm*]

I download this file from the link .... so I get a zip file in my pc called "M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_TMB" its a 1.56 gb... did I need to open this zip file? or take this zip file and put on Odin 3.09 in AP / PDA ?
because I open the zip file in my pc and have two files:
- SS_DL.dll
- M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_M919UVUFOH3_HOME.tar.md5 ( 2.5 gb )

Yes, you unzip the file to your computer. The .tar.md5 file is the one that you browse to and select in Odin.
Uncheck everything in Odin. Then, flash this firmware twice, with out letting your phone boot into the system. After the first flash is finished. Pull the battery. Put the battery back in and hold the Volume Down button while you power on the phone. This will put you back in Download mode. Then, flash the same firmware again.
After that second flash, you can boot your phone into the system normally.

If you really wanted to, you could leave those two checked on the second flash.
However, leaving them unchecked on both flashes will work, and are the easiest instructions to follow.

Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622790. If that doesnt work try DIFFERENT usb cables (official works best), verisions of odin and different usb ports. Make sure usb debugging checked and power down and pull battery, then put battery back and (while its off) hold just vol down then plug it in to the computer while odins open. If this stuff doesnt work it could be motherboard (its probably not though, dont worry). Good Luck, keep trying.

tried double and even quad flash, but wifi and 4g still doesn't work, I think it's about kernel, it remains same old

How to Root SM-G925T G95TUVU3DOI1?

Hey XDA,
I just got my hands on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge T-Mobile , its really an awesome phone. I am on Android 5.1.1 with baseband version G95TUVU3DOI1. I tried searching for couple of days to find a way to root the phone but was not successful. Is there a way to root S6 Edge, if not how to get back to older version of 5.1.1 android.
I have already tried to get back to older version of 5.1.1 with OH6 but had lots of errors like Enhanced feature stopped, Gapps has stopped and all kinds of other errors.
I hope anyone has the solution to root or downgrade the device.

Right now it's impossible to downgrade, but if you don't care about KNOX, you can flash a custom kernel that has auto-root included (most do). I used UniKernel v8 over in the unified development section to obtain root, but again, THIS WILL TRIP KNOX AND BREAK SAMSUNG PAY. Worth it in my opinion, though.

Yes. you should be able to flash TWPR before the kernel, and then just flash the kernel through TWRP, but I flashed the kernel first through ODIN, then ODIN flashed TWRP, so I can confirm that it works in that order. Once you've got TWRP, you can use that to flash whatever ROM you like, as long as it's compatilbe, of course.
EDIT: I'm currently running XtreStoLite 2.4 right now. Great for battery life with the included UniKernel v9, however some people are having issues with v9 so you may want to check out v8 instead. v9 works fine for me though.

I'm in the same boat here. Bought a used S6 Edge and the KNOX was already tripped. However for the life of me I can't find a tutorial that could root the phone. Can anyone just provide the link for this exact version? (OI1). Also, did anyone noticed that phone is lagging a bit from time to time?

The only reason I want the stock rom is pretty much the reason I got the phone: WiFi calling, TV remote, side night clock, etc. I managed to root the phone after bricking it this morning after flashing twrp, then flashing stock again and rooting it again. For now I'll manage without twrp since I'm not flashing roms anytime soon.

Thats what i mentioned in my earlier post, got to your developer settings (if you havent enable it, enable it buy tapping 7 or more times on your build number in about phone) and enable OEM Unlocking in developer settings and keep it Enable. It should work.

One last question Please, Does the rom u provided support Arabic Language not only writing but also Menus ?

I am self teaching myself all this and I just bought a locked 925t edge I just need to know the last part how do I "flash the rom through TWRP, it's right through the phone on final reboot after ap flashing the first 2??

Have you flashed the TWRP? If so, copy the ROM zip file to phone's internal memory, enter TWRP, then go to WIPE and do a factory reset, or manually wipe cache, system, data. After that, go to INSTALL, find your ROM zip and flash it. Then reboot the phone.

sorry if I seem stupid, but i am confused on the flashing of TWRP, when I flash the first 2 that would put TWRP in the phone? if not then I just need to copy it to the phones internal memory utilizing smartswitch type app??

If you flashed the TWRP with ODIN successfully, then you just need to enter recovery with combination of keys: Turn off your phone. HOLD power + home + volume up keys at the same time. It will ask you to confirm and you would push Vol up again and then enter TWRP recovery.
Personally, my phone bricked after flashing TWRP and I decided not to try it again. The stock ROM is excellent and has tons of features that integrate the phone's design. All I needed is to root it.

cant see files
there is a problem I can see the files I extracted the rom image and twrp, but when I open Odin and put the phone download mode and select AP those files dont show, they are supposed to show as MD5 tar files correct. maybe I have the wrong versions for this phone model SM-G925T baseband G925TUVU2COF8 ON 5.1.1..... When add the files you will be flashing in ODIN, you should see something like this:
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Binary Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..

Then you click START and wait for the success/fail message.

Correct files dont show to flash

Which tutorial covers how to root a 4.4.2 Galaxy S3?

I tried to root using this tutorial:

But the firmware version is 4.1.1 and I'm on 4.4.2. I see this is for updating to 4.4.2:

But I'm already on 4.4.2.
Basically, my phone's crashing three+ times a day. I don't want to buy a new one so my plan is:
Root my phone
Use Titanium Backup or Helium to back up all my apps
Flash custom ROM, maybe an S5 clone
Restore applications, if need be
Any threads anyone can point me to or tips on anything I've forgotten?

I didn't watch it so I dont know what it involves (network being slow right now so video streaming isnt an option) but here's a youtube video on how to root 4.4.2:

I rooted a 4.4.2 S3 before, cant remember what I did exactly although I do remember it requiring something from Chainfire, I believe it was called CF Autoroot. Also that's a pretty solid plan, but I'd imagine S5 clone ROMs are touchwiz-esque, so that may cause almost as much bloat-age on your phone as having a stock Touchwiz ROM, especially Kitkat. Just a heads up, never EVER flash an older bootloader than the 4.4.2 one, OR an older radio, as that will cause a permanent hard brick.

You can flash twrp and then use twrp to flash supersu or check out cfautoroot.

Last time I've really used TouchWiz was on my Rugby Smart that came with 2.3.5 Gingerbread, and back then it was at least tolerable. I've seen an S3 on 4.4.2 with TouchWiz and it was disgraceful how slow it ran.

Both CWM and TWRP are good recoveries, it's really what you prefer with regard to user interface, as most CWM recoveries made recently are touch-compatible just like TWRP is (whether it actually be CWM Touch or a fork of CWM called PhilZ Touch). TWRP has buttons and looks almost like an app in Android, while CWM looks more like a shell script you'd see in Linux Bash or Command Prompt. One advantage that TWRP has over CWM is that TWRP allows you to input the decryption password to decrypt the phone's system and data partitions if you've previously chosen to encrypt them in the security settings, and CWM does not. I may be wrong though, someone please correct me if I am.
And wow, I almost forgot about the GalaxyS3Root website. I thought the same thing at first (I was researching a CM9 ROM out of curiosity), but if you read their articles they do actually link back to XDA threads or other "reputable" sources. It is a legitimate site.

CWM has not been updated for a long time and TWRP has many added features.

Alright, so I used Odin3_v3.07_SGSIII to flash twrp-3.0.2-0-d2att.img.tar (dl.twrp.me/d2att/) to the AP (named PDA in Odin 3) tab following this tutorial (androiding.how/how-to-install-twrp-recovery-using-odin/).

I tried to flash SuperSU using the "apply update from external storage" option above, but that just wiped my phone for the third time (that wasn't a problem, losing internet so that I couldn't log into my Gmail account was a problem...).

I couldn't find a specific download link for Clockwork Mod Recovery, their website just keeps sending me to the ROM Manager in the Play Store.

So I had to call support and get an unlock code manually after a 30 minute or so call.
Now that I have an unlock code, I cannot get my Android SDK to recognize ODIN. According to Windows, I have "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem #3" installed, and it shows up as COM:5 in Odin3, but I can't use Odin3 to unlock my bootloader, can I? Here is my ODIN output:

All S3's come with an unlocked bootloader out of the box. You should be able to simply flash custom recovery then flash SuperSU zip to root.

Oh, it seems my research was wrong. Only the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 has a locked bootloader: androidauthority.com/e-z-unlock-app-to-unlock-your-verizon-samsung-galaxy-s3-bootloader-108462/
So if I'm not seeing, "Install", "Backup", "Restore", etc. options, then my TWRP installation wasn't successful, right?

Q: I don’t get CWM Recovery, I just see stock recovery after flashing CWM with ODIN!!!
A: On some S3 models, there is a script that overwrites the recovery you flashed. If you get stock recovery, just simply flash recovery again using ODIN, as soon as you see “PASS!”, pull the battery before your phone reboots. Then do the buttons to get into CWM recovery and do the rest of the root instructions.

If you're on the NE4 bootloader then the towel root app can root your phone. If you're on the nj2 or nj1 bootloader, then use the king root mobile app to root.

I sucessfully rooted my phone on August 7th everyone! Thanks for your help. The main issue was that the recovery flash was not finishing, so I had to disable to the automatic restart while flashing TWRP to the PDA tab in ODIN. Once I did that, SuperSU was very easy to install.
I also installed CyanogenMod 13 on Saturday, but the Phone and Messaging apps are either different for Android 4.* and 6.* or different between Samsung and other Android distributions. I had to flash my stock ROM back but my TWRP backups failed (I'm going to use Nandroid next time) so I had to flash my stock recovery and then do a factory reset with that, thus erasing 3 weeks of progress :crying:. Not to worry, I have my phone re-rooted and I'll probably reflash this weekend after using SMS Backup & Restore to retain my messages this time.

I remember using Odin and cf auto-root to root my 4.4.2 sgh-i747m but I don't remember exactly how. You should look up a tuto online or something like that. And a side note, the sgh-i747 and sgh-i747m are the same thing. Thank me if it worked ^^

Anyone know of a way to root this phone without the volume up button. I have an S3 with a non functioning volume up button so booting into recovery mode is a little tricky for me. Thanks for any help.

Figured it out. Used kingroot then installed rom manager from play store. In rom manager, I had it install the latest cwm recovery, then rebooted in to recovery. Viola! Rooted the s3 without a volume button!
