[Q] Lost root after OTA 4.3,trying to get back to root. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello Everyone. First and foremost, thanks for all the helpful tips you guys have provided, been lurking here for a year or so.
Okay so heres the deal. I used skunkApes rooting method to root my phone last year. I just used the files included there and didn't do any custom roms or anything.
The last OTA update, didnt remove my root so after a few drinks and seeing that notification bar, i said why not. Well this one did. I checked SuperSU and it said no binary files found, must re-root. And my root checker says no root access. In developer menu, i dont see a tab for root to tick.
I tryed unistalling superSU, and that didnt work when i reinstalled. I can get to Download mode, but when I do recovery, it looks like its the stock android recovery.
Any help woul be much appreciated.
oh and sorry if this is in the wrong place, i wasnt sure if should had tagged this in teh "How to root" thread.
Phone infor- Spring G3, USA,
SPH-L710android version 4.3
Thanks

Use caution. If you aren't already aware, the 4.3 OTA update came with a sneaky bonus in the form of the KNOX bootloader. You're definitely going to want to familiarize yourself with it if you've got it because it looks like it's here to stay and it's got real potential for screwing you.
As for regaining root, all the resources you're likely to need are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541900
I've been preaching that link all morning as my own personal Jesus Christ.

Hey Fallenzen, Thanks for the response, i see that you have been busy helping members this week!
Ok, so, when I try to go to recovery, Vol Up,menu and power, it looks like my clockwork recovery is gone and it shows the default one. No option to clear cache or make back up, just the android in surgery picture.
How do I get it back?
Thanks

I've really just been trying to share what I learned from my recent update nightmare, I'm still just another noob. Anyhow, you should just be able to reflash CWM using ODIN. I am uncertain whether or not this will trip the KNOX warranty bit though (I don't know when I triggered mine since I wasn't even aware it existed until too late). If you haven't already triggered it, you might want to exercise patience and just keep reading what the devs are figuring out because once KNOX fires there's no going back, short of replacing the motherboard, at this time on account of the physical change it makes to your hardware.
I don't have a link handy, but I've been reading about Root De La Vega, which exploited a hash vulnerability to allow custom flashing without triggering KNOX. Samsung has patched the vulnerability, so it may or may not be an option for you but it's probably at least worth looking into.

Custom recovery and custom ROMS will trip knox. If you have knox you can not flash backwards (back to 4.1.2 or lower than 4.3) because it will brick ur device. If ur not worried about tripping knox...iv got a note 3 and I tripped knox the first day I bought it...then by all means root and flash a custom recovery. If u haven't updated yet don't if you want the ROMS that are 4.1.2 or check out the 4.3 options in android development that left the knox bootloader out. If you choose to flash one of those that do not have the knox bootloader you can flash backwards. I'd suggest reading cnexus' "knox and you" in general. Lots of good info out here...keep reading and asking questions.

same issue
I got the same issue here. Did not expect to lose root with the 4.3 OTA update, but I have! I got ODIN to flash CWM recovery and I got into recovery boot mode, and was able to install superuser. Once the phone booted up I got that bullS*it gray shield icon notice about "attempt to access secure area" (KNOX?) and now I cant get root access. WTF?! Please help, I need TrevEMod back in my life!

question
Since i am so new I cant post this reply in the following thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541900
but Ill ask here.
Will flashing this ROM work AFTER updated to 4.3 OTA with this KNOX already installed? I dont know, havent tried it yet?

Thanks for the info. Yea, my phone is already a year old so from what Ive read from that thread is that it just voids the warranty.
I guess i have to re-visit the rooting process. I just would like to get root back so I could use my wifi teather and bluput to control my ps3 again.
Any help is much appreciated.

Guessing I'm going to wait until a .tar file is released to flash custom recovery and root. I need a flawless phone and a lot of issues being reported in the use of cnex 4.3 rom release.

Simple answer I believe is no. ... You have the knox bootloader. . That room will brick you device because ur trying to put an older bootloader on your phone.

Got Root Back
But not all apps functioning. I used ChainFire's Auto Root method in ODIN to get root back, downloaded SuperSU from play store and used it to disable KNOX.
Now TrevEMod WifiTether not working. Help?

Out of curiosity is your SELinux status "Permissive" or "Enforcing"? Also, tethering is a known issue on 4.3 stock update, TrevEMod probably isn't going to work regardless. Is that the only app giving you problems?
We have a member who figured out a wireless tether fix on Android Forums, check out this link:
http://androidforums.com/virgin-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/800923-solved-mk5-4-3-stock-working-wireless-tether.html
It is for Virgin Mobile but should still work for Sprint or Boost for that matter since all three are SPH-L710.

That ROM worked for me after the OTA update to 4.3 screwed up my phone. I have the KNOX bootloader. I have tripped the Warranty Void bit, but since my phone is flashed from Sprint to Verizon I don't much care about that. My phone, with this ROM and the appropriate fixes (sprint hotspot, wifi, etc) works flawlessly. I have observed a bit of response lag on the lock screen, but it is not excessive and the lag is display-oriented as I can enter my lock code at full speed and it detects every touch just fine. I don't even notice it at this point.
Hope that helps.

Well, here are my notes from my installation procedure. You can judge for yourself whether or not you're comfortable doing so, but be aware that this WILL trip your KNOX Warranty Void bit.
These notes were created for my own use in the event that I want to duplicate this procedure later since my pre-KNOX notes were rendered useless by the OTA update.
----------------------------------------
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541900
Save all files to the phone's internal memory and remove microSD card.
Use ODIN3 to flash CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v5.tar.md5 to the phone with the PDA function.
Boot phone into the Recovery Console.
- Install SPHL710_MK3_rooted_odexed.zip
Use ODIN3 to flash CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5 to the phone using the PDA function.
* Note, after this you might find you need to flash CWM Recovery to the phone again if the Android recovery console reappears.
From the CWM Recovery Console:
- Install Knox_APP_remover.zip
- Install wifi_fix_mk3.zip
- Install UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip
- (optional) Install MK3HotspotMod-odex.zip
- (optional) Install MK3_more_toggles.zip
Reboot the phone. If all goes well, it should load smooth as silk. Then all you need to do is execute the SuperSU app before attempting to operate any other apps that require root access and you should be golden.
----------------------------------------
It should be noted that I use ODIN 3.07 for this and am no longer on v1.85
Let me know if you need any clarification on the notes and I'll do my best.
Edit:
Also, do NOT use TriangleAway. I haven't tried it, but all of my reading suggests that it is a one way ticket to Bad News Blvd.

Settings/About Phone, scroll to the bottom. More of an issue for 4.4 than 4.3, as the default for 4.3 is Permissive and the default for 4.4 is Enforcing. In Enforcing mode it will sometimes block root-related apps, but it can manually be set to Permissive for 4.4 users.

Ok, tried to do the first step here. This is what ODIN says when I try to load the CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v*.tar.md5 file.
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid
<OSM> CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v5.tar.md5 is invalid.
<OSM> End...
Not sure what to do here. Please let me know what you think?
I just tried to boot into recovery mode and of course it's the stock android recovery. Bah!

I'm not sure, but the first thing I'd suggest is to try redownloading the file. Possibly from another source. Sounds like a bad download. If it continues to be a problem, I'll compile the exact files from my computer and make 'em accessible on my dropbox or something so you can try to use them... But that shouldn't be necessary. Also, remember that you want to flash the file via ODIN using the PDA option and make sure that both Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked but that nothing else is.

yeah I tried that

I downloaded from 3 different sources, all the same result when loading the file into ODIN via PDA function. Hmph! Is it because I am on a stock recovery and ROM?

[Q] Completely stuck on sgh-t999v (wind) root job...ughhh

Hey all,
So I've checked as much as I could to try and help myself before posting, so hoping some kinds souls can help out with my issue.
Got a samsung galaxy s3 SGH-T999V on Wind Mobile (Canada), android 4.3. My aim is to root the phone, then play with some roms later on, but at least get the rooting part done. I started with this hxxp://theunlockr.com/2012/07/23/how-to-root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999v-canadian-version guide, but the CMW didn't get installed when I went into recovery mode, just had the stock phone recovery options.
So then, went on to try pretty much the exact same procedure but with the root66_GLW_T999VVLALH2.7z..but Odin gave me the failed sbl2 error or something like that. Now i didn't have anything to backup so I didn't really care wiping the phone to factory default so I did so ( as well as the cache partition using the default android recovery menu.) But even still, no luck. When I tried again, it (Odin that is) just seemed to hang at the phase that stated "get PIT" or something like that (apologies I'm pulling this all from memory).. Had no real choice but to interrupt it restart, try again, back to the sbl2 error again. Doing this from a Win7x64 Ultimate OS (if that's relevant). I HATE the phone the way it is, I cannot stand the bloatware and I have a lot in mind to have fun with if I can ever get this bloody thing to root.
I think that's about all I can mention atm, did the usual stuff like try different usb ports, the phones USB cable 'seems' to be ok and working, I'm just beyond frustrated and finally at the part where I need to ask for help. Any and all help is deeply appreciated. Cheers
i also want help rooting my T999v version 4.1.2 cant seem to find a tutorial for rooting of version 4.1.2

If you're on 4.3 stock you'll have to deal with this new thing they added called "Knox". Also you cannot downgrade to older versions of official firmware if you have updated to 4.3 stock. Root66 won't work for you unless there's a version of root66 firmware that is 4.3 (which there isn't). Here's a thread that should solve this problem for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563955

Well then that's the Device you have. Anything said in Settings > Model is suspect. If I modify ro.device in Build.prop then My Galaxy S3 will appear instantly as S4 or Nexus 5. That does not mean it is one.
You always go by what's under the Battery and not by Settings > Model.

[Q] Multiple Q's, Need HELP!!

Hi guys!
This is my very first post here, on the XDA-Dev forum. So I'll try to be as quick as possible with my questions!
I own the Galaxy Note 2 (N7100) unlocked international GSM version from like december 12', almost from launch i may say. Since then I've used the stock 4.1.2 official rom w/ root and just updated to official 4.3 just last week (bad decision to make, I know). Now, under "About device" it says: Baseband: UEMJ9 and Build: UEMK9. I must say that I never realy used the multi window feature, I find it to be useless for me. Some other things I never used: touch wiz launcher (NovaLauncher instead) and I think smart stay too(just puted it on 10 min). Now the one that I've used: SPlanner (I find it a very good calender but the 4.1.2 version, 4.3 version it's crapy), Catch app, SNote, Camera, FMRadion (when travel) and basically these apps.
Now, my questions are:
1. How to root my device, considering that I have 4.3 official update with Basesband: UEMJ9 and Build: UEMK9?!
2. How can I manually save SPlanner, Catch, SNote, FM Radio, TouchWiz Camera apks + their data and export them to another ROM if I like to do so in near feature?
3. How can I try custom ROMs on my device? Like DNito3, CM11?
Hope some of you guys will be well intended to help me out! I know that my Q's could have been asked here but I think if is someone else in my situation too, this will be gold and easy for them too, cuz all the Q's are in one place. I will very appreciate your help!
I've tried CM Installer and failed. Then something with policy violated showed up on screen. I think it has something to do with the knox security. CM guides me to manually install the ROM. Don't know what to do, cuz I don't realy want to brick the device.
So... I figured it out how to root it, done it! Now when I try to open Titanium Backup, I get ERROR and it's saying: "Sorry, I could not acquire root privilages. This app will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again. This attemp was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command". Does anyone have any ideea how can I make titanium work? And also, now I have counter set on 5, will I be able to reset it to 0 if I want to send the device to warranty?

How u root? If u say u root it alrd and success. . It might be supersu problem (halfway rooted). Goto playstore nd update the supersu, after that open nd update its binary, nd reboot.

If u like custom rom with new bootloader, u can try DN3.
With new bootloader u can use dn3 with stock kernel without wifi problem.

@antique_sonic I've tried to do that, and stixked in boot loop. Then I boot into CWM recovery and did a wipe factory reset, but without any luck. I went online and downloaded the DN3 v3.1 and installed it succesfully. Now I'm up and running rooted and all that good stuff! Now, what if I want to reset the binary counter, is it possible? Thank you!

I m not sure if ta support 4.3.
U can go and see from his thread.
But for me... I don't care the binary counter until I want to sell the phone.
But if I m not wrong u have to do it under stock rom nd kernel, then after reset u can unroot (if u want to sell back ur phone to provider)

Yes! I can't agree more. I don't care either about the warranty, but just to know in case I will sell it, or who knows, maybe I have to send it to warranty. I will do my research next time and I will post here what I'll find, to let other know too. Thx again for your support!

[Q] Stuck in AT&T bootloader

Hello, I rooted using this method: www .youtube .com/watch?v=GiZ7D2zjJdA (sorry xda wont let me post links)
The root worked fine all was well until I tried setting a font using a font installer, when I set the font the phone shut off rebooted and is now just sitting at the AT&T icon which I think is called a boot loader. I am running Android 4.3 which has knox and this bootloader. I can get into the stock recovery by vol up + power + home and I can "wipe data/factory reset" would this work? I just want my mistake fixed im so mad at myself for doing this I am not a pro at this at all and im scared of what to do, I really need someones help.... can kies update the phone and fix it? or can I wipe data/factory reset? All my phone has is just root, no cwm and stuff.
Please help someone!
Are my threads seen? Seems like no one ever replies to anything I post. Anyways I tried to wipe the data and factory reset and it did not work, I also tried booting into safe mode and still no luck. I need someones help please.
Thanks
what is your firmware version?? 4.3 OTA or 4.3 Leak?

you need to provide more information. What recovery your using and what version, what rom, bootloader version, how you rooted your phone, etc etc. Also, the search bar is your friend.
We all have lives outside of XDA we cant post a response as soon as a new thread comes up. Be patient. Like I said, do a little searching while your waiting for a response instead of waiting for someone to do it for you.

did you finally foun your answer that you where searching for? if not i know a method to unroot the phone and put back to 4.3
email me if so : [email protected]
Since your are running 4.3, you cannot flash anything newer older than 4.3. Do not flash any 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 ROM as this will make matters worse. ATT never released a complete stock 4.3 ROM that could be flashed via Odin. You can try to debrick it using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068
Edit: According to another thread, DO NOT USE Kies to re-install the firmware. It WILL BRICK your phone.
Can you get into download mode? Has the Knox counter been tripped? If it hasn't been tripped, maybe you could get it repaired under warranty. If it's been tripped, you can still try to get it repaired under warranty. Just be prepared for Samsung to refuse warranty service because Knox has been tripped.

[Q] Looking to root my new Tab s 8.4

I was going to use CS-Auto-Root but just had a couple questions. After reviving the tablet today, I did numerous updates. Would CF root still work with the new software? The only thing diffrent I can see is the build numberm does that matter? Details below, and thanks!
Model #: SM-T700
Android Version: 4.4.2
Build number: KOT49H.T700XXU1ANK2
Sorry if i'm posting to the wrong place!
It should work on most firmwares. If it doesnt it work it will not break anything. If cfautoroot doesnt work then you can use the twrp method.

Ok, thanks a lot! One question though, why not just use twrp first? Is it a lot harder or something?
I prefer cfautoroot. Its automated in which you just flash it and gives root. With twrp recovery, you have to flash it with odin. Then download a zip called supersu zip on your tab s. Then reboot back into recovery and flash it manually. Theres less steps with cfautoroot

It shouldnt break anything. Even if it fails or something happens, it just messes uo your recovery. You can easly fix this and just flash twrp over it. Both root methods will void warrenty so its best to be sure that your tablet isnt deffective. Wait a week or so in case. People had problems with battery and other stuff but they already void warrenty but still got it fixed as it was a hardware problem.

Correct, messing around doesn't void your hardware warranty, even though stores/manufacturers want you to think it does. You are allowed to use the item for which it is designed. If you are allowed to root it and mess around with it. Warranty remains since you used the device for what it is designed. If you hardbrick your device that's not covered, not because you rooted, but because you destroyed it. If your camera fails. That's a hardware issue and is non related to the modifications you made so that would be covered by warranty. Atleast that's how warranty works here in Belgium.
It worked!
Thanks everyone for the help, It rooted successfully!

Noob here! How can i UNroot my phone?

I want to UNroot my phone/restore my phone due to the fact that I believe I may have done something wrong in the process. I am on 5.0.1
When I turn my phone on, I do get the welcome screen saying my phone's unlocked and all but when I try to use xposed installer it says that my device is not properly rooted?
Specifically it says " The latest version of Xposed is currently not active. Did you install the framework and reboot?" When I try to do this, it says
"Xposed is not (yet) compatible with Android SDK version 21 or your processor architecture (armeabiv7a)
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE: could not load library "libdvm.so" needed by" /data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/cache/app_process";
cause by library "libdvm.so" not found"
And I believe I had a very hard time (when rooting) copying and pasting the SuperSU to internal storage. Not all the files were actually being transferred over.
I pretty much want to restore my phone so that I can try to root it properly this time.
When the tutorial on how root our phones came out, I feel as though I rushed it from excitement without properly educating myself on what to watch out for.
Maybe I am only HALF rooted? lol sounds so stupid. but my greenify works and superSU grants access to everything. I just don't understand.
My last phone was iphone4 and jailbreaking that was easy. This is something else.
Can anyone help? Thank you for your time!

Thank you for replying so quickly! :good:
Do you happen to know if this will automatically upgrade me to the newest OTA upgrade?
I want to stay on 5.1.1 so I can try to root it properly. And I've been delaying the OTA upgrade since day 1 and still doing so even with the supposed root I have on my phone right now.

If you're going to root your phone, you don't want to take the OTA. You'll just have to downgrade to Lollipop anyway.
Use ODIN and flash the full firmware. 5.1.1 should be good. @hsbadr has a thread in the Development forum with all of the firmware that's available. It'll save you the slow download speed of Sammobile.
If when you go into download mode and you see "mode: developer," you're pretty close to root. Flash SuperSU and TWRP and you'll be there.

Can you elaborate a little more on this for me? Because when I first rooted I made sure to do EVERY step. Read the forums and watched youtube videos directly linked from the forum.
The thing I just didn't know how to do correctly was flashing the SuperSU and TWRP (I THINIK)
I sincerely just remember trying to copy and paste some files into system storage? something like that... and not EVERYTHING was transferring over.
When I turn on my phone I get the welcome screen with the picture of the unlocked lock with "custom" underneath. So I know I must have done SOMETHING correctly.
Im just sincerely lost. It's quite infuriating .

Go into download mode. From phone off, hold the volume down, power and home buttons together. If it says "mode: developer" in the upper left hand corner when you get it in developer mode, your bootloader is unlocked. At that point you can pick up the instructions for flashing SuperSU and TWRP. You may need to flash the Emotion kernel... it's been awhile since I unlocked Lollipop.

As long as you use the stock firmware from SamMobile and follow the directions in the video, EXACTLY ......... don't take any shortcuts. You will need to join SamMobile to get the download but its simple and free.

Hey! Thank you for the advice!
I downloaded the firmware from @hsbadr ! Will that work? Or is it better for me to download it from SamMobile? I want to make sure I don't do anything incorrectly.
p.s. have you already rooted your phone?

SamMobile is very reliable but if you trust your source then you should be OK. I have done the root thing many times years ago but I'm happy with stock firmware and I need my devices to work without issue so I leave well enough alone.
