Photojojo Lens Review - Nexus 5 Accessories

First off I'd like to say that I am in no way a professional so be nice! I just thought I'd share my thoughts on this product and its compatibility specifically with our beloved devices.
Some Back Story
Around a month or two ago I stumbled onto an XDA thread that claimed that the ring around the Nexus 5’s camera is magnetic and could be used for things like add on lenses. I read some information claiming this and that for example I read that the magnet would interfere with the OIS or that the white Nexus 5 has the magnetic ring but not the black one so I decided to wait it out. Fast foreward a while and it seems like Photojojo released some information and even a short video demonstrating a lens working with the Nexus 5! Immediately after that I bought a polarized lens and a wide angle/macro lens (The wide angle lens consists of two lenses put together, one of them being the macro lens and the other one which does not do anything by itself) They got to my house VERY quickly and I was very impressed about that!
The Products
Let me start by saying that the lenses do work, you can apply a magnetic ring if you want (I tested with and without, the skinniest ring is the only one that fits), if you are just using the lenses with the magnets built into the Nexus 5 the magnets are not strong at all so be careful (Don't drop them) and the OIS does not seem to be affected at all.
My black Nexus 5 with the skinniest magnetic ring attached
Here is an image of all the lenses, the provided magnetic rings with adhesive backs and my Nexus 5 (The little lanyards on the lenses are attached to a magnet which also acts as a cap for the backside of the lens)

This is as close to the little dinosaur I could get and stay in focus without the macro lens on (The little dinosaur was a free gift provided by Photojojo!)

Thank you for your time I hope I've helped anyone who's on the fence about picking some of these up! I plan on ordering a super fisheye lens soon which is their newest magnetic lens product and when that time comes I will update this thread!
Happy Holidays!

Hey guys so I had a chance to get some more pictures outside and I've got some bad news. It seems like my original review was not completely accurate, I'm not sure why but when I went out today to get more pictures my results were very different. The following pictures are the Photojojo lenses on and off, when they are on they are kept in place by the Nexus 5's built in magnet.

Conclusion
I came to the conclusion that adding the magnetic ring onto the phone adds a little bit of space which is needed for the phone to get into focus and while it is a little unsightly it works a whole lot better and the quality of the pictures are much better. The following pictures are the Photojojo lenses being held in place with the magnetic rings with adhesive backs that are included. I decided to leave the macro section out because the macro lens is the only one that seems to work well regardless of if you have the magnetic ring on or off.

There we go, from this point on I will be using the magnetic ring thats included...
I still plan on picking up their super fisheye lens so stay tuned!
If anyone else has any experience with the Photojojo lenses please chime in as I would love to hear your experiences with this product and how it works with out Nexus 5's!

Thanks for the write up...
You said that with the macro lens you DON'T need to use the supplied magnetic ring?
That's good news for me then.. Lol
Also you said that you are going to keep the ring on... Even though its unsightly... What about painting it or plastic dip black?
Now off to find a macro photojojo lens

That's right the macro lens worked well with or without the magnetic ring supplied by Photojojo!
I thought of painting it but it would eventually come off so I'm just gonna leave it.

You're right!

Great review,
from the shots you've taken, it seems Macro lens is the only one worth getting.

Thanks! Haha its up to you but remember that the macro lens does not come by itself it comes with another portion that doesnt do anything by itself but when combined with the macro lens it becomes the wide angle lens!
Ill get more macro shots uploaded soon then...
in the mean time enjoy this!

My question would be is after removing the magnetic ring the resin left on the lens itself. How hard would it be to remove?

Macro and wide fov lens (or how to picture really tiny stuff)

Used the more or less well known http://www.dealextreme.com/p/univer...ent-for-digital-cameras-and-cell-phones-14953
Samples (the shots are in macro focus mode, as close as i could get it to focus with that lighting)
1st one: with macro lens
2nd one: stock sgs2 lens
3rd one: with wide fov lens
Tiny review:
- easy to install and remove (its magnetic) and has lens protection stuff to carry the lens with you
- the macro is pretty good, the wide angle has more fish eye that it should for that angle, and you can see the black edges, but it does the job
- both have slightly blurry edges (but not nearly as blurry as ive seen in other reviews)
- cheap ($16)
- macro is where its the most helpful as you can now take pictures of tiny insects and the like, much closer than stock ever could. movies of tiny spiders are fun ;-)
Hi,
I'm interested in getting this.
Thanks for the review.
Hopefully fits mine I had the 2000mAH battery, so the casing changed.
Watch out, SGS2 has a wide angle lens and vignettes with many such lenses. Me got a fisheye from USBfever. No vignetting in movie mode though, seems to have less wide angle in movie mode.

Get it. I have the 2000mah battery and the batter cover has no impact on the use of this lens. The metal ring just sticks onto the camera area (the rectangle region). Use of other cases would not affect it either.
Just ordered one. It's got to be worth a risk at only £6.80 ($10.37) & free shipping.
If I remember I'll report back once I've got it.

More specifically, the still cam of the SGS2 looks like a 20mm lens on an APS-C crop frame DSLR (Nikon D90 for example), and the movie like a 35mm lens.
In traditional full-frame equivalents that'd be 30mm (wide-angle) and 50mm (normal), respectively.

when you say the metal ring sticks to the camera area, does it mean 1 side of the ring is adhesive? does it leave any residue when removing? covers the flash?
shot this VIDEO with stock sgs2 camera
Why is it mostly out of focus? Can't the SGS 2 focus that close or does it take a while to autofocus?

camera issues

hi guys! im noticed the camera takes horrible photos resolution!!!! i was disney today and i cant take anyphotos because all of them was taken blurry and low resolution. but with the front camera the photos seems good resolution and more clearly.. is very annoying... anybody has the same problem???
i try with all setting and nothing change and the resolution settin is on max (8Megapixels)
Try these two things, clean the lens & either turn in or turn off the anri-shake. I was getting all kinds of lens flares and didn't even realize the lens was covered in my finger oils. Turning the anti shake was bad but after I turned it off then back in the pictures seem to have gotten better. BTW this phone has one if the worse possible placements of a flash and lens. I've had the flash reflect off my finger and it messes with the photo. GL hope your problem was like mine.

Mine was a bit blurry as well and then as I looked more closely at the rear lens I found that the guy who installed my Screen protector on the front also installed a protector on the rear as well and it covered the rear lens. Upon taking that screen protector off the rear lens the pictures were very clear and had no blur on them. I had wondered why at first the pictures were clear and then turned blurry after.

Photojojo lens attachments for Nexus 5

Photojojo lens attachments work with the Nexus 5. apparently, the ring around the Nexus 5 camera lens is a magnet and the lens attachments are a perfect fit.
go to the link below for a vid of the attachment and some pics:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1q6jv7/nexus_5_camera_has_magnet_ring_builtin_for_addon/
i still want Google to fix the camera software (auto focus and shutter speeds, camera app itself, etc), but i'm starting to wonder when Vic Gundotra stated months ago that the Nexus device will have an "insanely great camera"...maybe he was alluding to lens attachments for the Nexus 5?
it kinda makes sense...especially if Google purposely designed the Nexus 5 with a magnetic ring specifically for lens attachments. it's possible they may release their own lens attachments through the Play store.
go here for Photojojo lens attachments.
didn't see a thread posted here about this, but please delete if this is a duplicate.
i don't know how well it will perform combined with the ois. if the sensor and the internal lens moves because of the ois shouldn't also the external lens move? i'm not an expert in photography, but i think that if the sensor moves it probably will be out of the focal point of the external lens leading to crappy photos.

The lens isn't the thing that moves in OIS, it's the sensor. That's what allows for the images to stay stable even when there's movement. So, it shouldn't matter.

That's the G2 camera, not the N5.
I don't know if they use the same OIS technology though.
The lens doesn't move, the sensor does.
Just got my 3 lenses from Photojojo in the mail for my Nexus 5 and the magnets do not work. The magnet in the phone pushes the lense away. So the polarities are wrong on these lenses. Also the metal rings that come with them are crap. They fall off very quickly. Unfortunately I will have to return these lenses. I was looking forward to using them
I just received the marco and fish-eye lenses. The macro works but the fish-eye is the wrong polarity. I called Photojojo and was told the polarity is random and that they can't test to make sure they send a Nexus 5 friendly lens. This is very unfortunate. The macro is just ok. The fish-eye would have been cool. I'm returning both.
These are very expensive. This generic set is probably just as good at a fraction of the price http://amzn.to/IDG1Ti
I ordered the Patuoxun lenses and they the same polarity as my nexus, they don't stick to the camera lens, they repel. Has anyone had any luck with these sticking?

yeah im wondering what lens work with the nexus 5

Fisheye lenses

So I've read many mentioning that the ring on our lenses work with some fisheyes to hold the lens in place. Also, I've heard it messes with stabilization. Can someone point me in the right direction?

i bought one set of lenses (fish eye, macro and wide lens).
and yes theoretically, n5 camera supports these lenses as it has a magnet around the camera but i faced some problems (idk if it was a problem with the lens i bought or a design flaw of the phone)
The macro lens attached alright but the fish eye lens couldnt stay in place (as it is bigger and heavier). i corrected that issue by attaching a metal ring around n5 camera and hence the lens's magnet stick perfectly on that metal ring
and i didnt noticed much difference in stabilisation.

What lens kit did you get? I've been looking specifically for a macro lens for the N5 but I can't get a straight answer from anybody on polarity consistency. Here are the lenses I am looking at:
http://www.amazon.com/Leegoal-Detachable-iPhone-Camera-Smaller/dp/B005C3CSXC/
http://www.amazon.com/VicTsing®-Fish-Eye-Magnetic-Easy-Use-connected/dp/B00QIGOKRE/
http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/cell-phone-lenses/
The Photojojo lenses are the only ones I have been told have consistent magnet polarity, so they should always work on the N5, but they aren't higher quality than the Chinese knock-offs so their price isn't really justified.
Anyone have a good recommendation?

RhinoShield lens review

A bit ago I received these add-on lenses from RhinoShield to test out. I’m no professional photographer, just a regular joe, amateur photographer. But I guess they liked the reviews I’ve written about their cases on XDA, thus decided to send me this package when I asked about their crash guard for my pixel 2 XL.
Their approach is a little different than Moment. Rhinoshield’s focus is on developing cases for phone protection, where as Moment’s focus is mobile photography via add-on lenses. An extra part is required using the Rhinoshield’s add-on lenses. If you choose to explore their add-on lens, you need to buy a lens adapter for the case and the lenses simply screw onto the case via the adapter. My guess is, they went this route because their main focus is phone protection, therefore it’s not ideal to allow the lenses, as a secondary option, to increase the cost of production of the cases for the entire customer base when probably just a small percentage would consider buying the add-on lenses.
There are four add-on lenses as follow:
- 2 in 1 macro + 0.65x wide angle lens – 100 degree view angle
- 0.6x HD wide angle lens – 110 degree view angle
- Super wide angle lens – 165 degree view angle
- Fisheye lens
The photos are posted in the following order:
- without lens
- 2 in 1 macro + 0.65x wide angle in wide angle mode
- 0.6x HD wide angle lens
- Super wide angle lens
- Fisheye lens
- close up without lens
- close up with 2 in 1 macro + 0.65x wide angle in macro mode
All the photos are taken on a tripod, in the same position, at the same time, with the exception of the macro photo, that was taken indoor.
From my eyes, I think there is noticeable decrease in quality of the photos. I see quite a bit of vignetting of the images as you go wider. The distortion in the super wide and fisheye lens are expected, however the decrease in quality is quite severe. One odd thing noted is according to RhinoShield’s website, the HD wide angle is supposed to have 110 degree view angle, more than the 2 in 1. However, as you can see in the photos, the 2 in 1 captured more but also with more distortion. Now these are just my opinion, and like an a**hole everyone got their own, so just look at the photos and judge for yourselves. I did try to reach out to Moment for some lenses so I can do a side by side comparison review, but they politely declined. (lol ‘who are you?’)
Now in terms of build quality of the lenses, they feel sturdy and the material is all metal. They hold some weight and certainly doesn’t feel cheap. Each lens comes with front and back caps, as well as a little microfiber pouch. All of which explains the price tags, although they are still cheaper than Moment.
In summary, do I recommend these? Personally, I wouldn’t buy them because of the hit in quality of the photos. However, some people may not be as picky and the wide angle being so useful, especially in landscape photography, without many options in the market it may work for some folks. Also, if you only care to use the photos on social medial platforms, the photos get rendered down anyway making the distortions even less noticeable. If I have to pick, I think the 0.6x HD wide angle lens showed the least amount of distortion and so I’d go with that one.
Hope this was helpful.
Thanks for this review. I likely wouldn't have invested in these, but this solidified that.
