Issues with mounting external flash drive - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello,
I'm facing an issue when I mount an external flash drive to my nexus 7 using a simple USB OTG adapter. When i plug the external memory in, the flash drive's LED indicator lights up, which means that it's powered by the tablet, but the device itself doesn't react whatsoever and when browsing with ES I don't see any external drive. What am i supposed to do? My nexus 7 is entirely stock and no root, so i don't void the warranty.

ES won't see the drive - you need to use a 3rd party app like Nexus Media Importer to access it.

Yeah, I got total commander plus a paid usb otg plugin for it and now I can use it normally. Turns out Nexus devices can't boot external flash drives on their own.

When my USB port wasn't broken I didn't need any additional apps, I just plugged my USB drive into my OTG cable then into my device and it was instantly recognized. If that doesn't work for you try usinh Chainfire's Stickmount.

You could try OTG helper but that requires root access...
If the light is coming on you should be able to use it. You are just going to need a 3rd party app such as "file explorer".
I can understand the worries of voiding your warranty but you may need root access if you are going to trouble shoot. If things go bad you can always unroot your tablet and take it back to factory settings. WuGFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit has a nice feature on his windows program that does that automatically for you!

Can you hook up an external, usb powered HD for the Nexus 7 to read music from?

So I'm wondering if I can hook up my 2TB USB powered external HD to read music from the Nexus 7. Since there's no expandable slot for SD or mini SD, I want to be able to plug in my HD and have it read all my music.

I remember there being a microsd USB stick made for androids a while back, if you have the cords for it might as well hook it up and see what happens, won't do any harm

I had to use a powered USB hub to even get the device to recognize the drive. However I couldn't read anything. It may be because the drive is NTFS. Unfortunately all of my hard drives are formatted NTFS so I can't test for you.

I haven't tested, but with a USB OTG cable I can get it to read a USB stick so I would guess a HD would be the same type of thing
My old N7 would be fine with my usb powered external WD HDD, with the otg cable, don't see why it wouldn't this time as otg is still supported

So does it matter what USB otg adapter I get? And will still work without root? I won't root for a while'

Use a powered USB hub and plug the drive into that. If the drive is NTFS use USB OTG Helper and then reboot. You should then be able to access the files on the drive.
I don't even need a hub, the otg powers my external hdd

Anyone trying and getting external portable usb 3.0 based hard drive to work on N7 2013? Just wondering, mine won't do anything, no detection as in mounting.
My drive is WD passport 2tb silver.

Not sure if the nexus 7 could power an HDD, its worth a shot I guess. Have you considered uploading your entire library to Google? I've done it it works great!

As it's ntfs format, you'll need an app, like nexus media importer, to see the drive.

Usb otg question

Warning noob on keyboard
Could someone explain me how does it work I have manged to mount it using srickmount and it works fine.... But I wasn't able to write on it keeps saying that I have inefficient space but that's not true. I have tried different file systems fat32/16 ntfs and ext4.
Sorry if this might sound stupid but it's my first experience with usb otg thanks in advance

What app(s) are you trying to use?
I am able to copy/write to USB using ES File Explorer. Haven't tried other apps.

OTG Cable Root

As there are no roms that I am interested in flashing so I have yet to root my phone. So I just wanna ask if OTG cable will work without root, just wanna xfer some files from my phone to a usb stick.

USB Storage access through USB OTG

Hi, as I am not 100% satisified with the amount of storage the new nexus 7 tablet provides (lack of SD card slot),I have been trying to watch movies from a USB through an OTG adapter. How can I watch the movies or what apps do I need in order to be able to watch them?
Thanks, Stuart McD
Get an USB OTG cable and Stickmount or Nexus Media Importer. Just plug and open one of the apps. (Stickmount doesn't work for me, I don't know why)

I know this is overkill for what you are trying to do but it may interest some. I got a Western Digital 2 terabyte Live network hard drive and put all of my movies and TV shows on it. It is ethernet only so I have it plugged into my router. They have an android app that let's you access it from anywhere you have Internet. You can stream videos from it or download them. You can also upload to it from any where. It works fantastic.

Do you need to download the video to the nexus 7 or can you watch it from the USB?
The videos are kept on the usb stick, no need to download to your Nexus.

Yep, that's it. Once plugged in pull down your notifications and tap the usb and change your settings.
Ok. Done. Tv still doesn't recognize, but does recognize usb stick, btw, I bought a sd reader/writer usb adapter it doesn't recognize. Im trying to watch movies I have downloaded to my phone, on my tv. TV is brand new.

Have you tried using wifi-direct?That may be your only option short of screen mirroring via wifi or dongle.
How do I wifi direct? My tv is a smart tv. Run the wifi on my tv and let phone recognize it?
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I dont think its as easy as plugging a usb stick in the tv. My tv reads the usb stick easily. It wont do the same for my phone. Always a complication when u think or should be easy
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You might look at AllCast.
The issue is probably the drivers then. The TV likely has a basic USB driver in it so the USB stick will work, but probably won't allow the phones drivers to install on the TV. So like what was mentioned, if you can't wifi direct or screen mirror (must have Samsung TV for that to be on the TV) you will likely need a Samsung Allcast/Allshare hub. Which in my mind isn't worth it when you can just move them over to a USB stick and watch them from there.
Theres not a rom or driver or sumthn to fix it?

Where did you get your movies from that you can't access on your smart tv? You should be able to stream them from wherever/whatever app you got them from...unless you got them illegally
But nevertheless, AllCast mentioned above is an option, but I think the better option is to get a TV video adapter for your phone? Why not get an HDMI/MHL cable? Duh! They're cheap, like 10 bucks off ebay. Make sure you have the 10/11-pin adapter, not the 5-pin, in regards of the Note 3.
If screen mirroring isn't your savvy and you want the full HD experience of accessing your videos directly thru usb, there is a way to mount your phone as a usb mass storage rather than MTP, but Samsung (and others) don't allow that capability in their OS's (probably to try to get you to use their stupid Kies software). To work around this you'll need root and a terminal emulator. In terminal enter su and type "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage". THIS MIGHT REALLY MESS UP YOUR USB & ADB CONFIGURATION. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Really it's not a big deal tho, to revert back use "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mtp, adb" and reboot like 3 times until it finally fixes itself.
Hope this helps!

What's the best format of a video to be played on a TV? I haven't tried this yet. My videos are currently on MP4 format. Thanks!
The videos are playable on anything. So what next? I did the terminal emulator....verbatim. .. nothing happened. My phone didnt slap me in the face or gouge my eyes. However, I didnt plug it into the tv yet. Yes I have allshare.

Thats a big ol negatory big rap. Terminal thingy is a no go. Thanx tho. And duh! I could just push the stuff to my usb and play it. But! I paid for top of the line (note3). It should wipe my a$$. And I have no doubt it will.....one day
