Hello everyone,
I have an O2 Xda Orbit, onto which I have installed the marvellous ROM created by Tom (Version 4.1). Since I have now left my old job, I no longer have the luxury of an Exchange server to store my calendar appointments.
I discovered that I can use Google calendars, and give access to everyone to see where I am, but I cant find a usable application to run on the phone that will keep the appointments in sync. let me explain.
Most of the apps offer a "free" version that will only sync 3 days ahead, good for testing, crap for normal use. In addition, I use Re occurring appointments, which dont seem to be copied over to google.
Does anyone know of a good app that will sync in both directions between my phone and my online calendar. If I had to move away from Google and use hotmail or similar, then thats fine too.

Both are google calender apps
Goosync worked well with me. I have my shift pattern programmed, so it's always recuring with no issues
I think both have a free version if you only use one calender

In case you are interested www.addadate.com has loads of sports and social calendars in Google Calendar, Outlook, iCal and Lotus Notes format. Ideal to sync with your Orbit includes Formula One, Tour de France, Moon phases etc etc
"Yahoo! Go" is a free app if you have a yahoo account, it syncs calendar and contacts, gives you access to local news, your yahoo e-mail, stock market, yahoo maps, weather and flickr. it's a pretty solid app, if you can put up with Yahoo!. I use it to save my contacts when i hard-reset. havn't had any problems yet.

Hi all.
I'm looking for a little advice.
I currently use Outlook 2003 at work along side HTC Sync (HS) to sync my calendar entries to my Desire.
Is it possible to sync (only) the HS entries on my phone to a specific Google calendar? Ideally I'd like to sync the HS items into an online Google calendar just for work so I can see it online when I don't have my phone.
Happy to use an app if that's the only way...
By the way I can't use the Google Sync app for a couple of reasons; my company regards it as a security risk and it doesn't allow you to select the specific google calendar that you sync to - at least not as far as I know.

if u can't use this , there is a plugin for outlook that allows u to sync your outlook calendar & contacts , with Your Google Calendar & contacts ( if that's of any help ) , it's quite easy to find if u google it ...

Thanks Skywalker1726, but that's not quite what I meant.
My fault should have been clearer. I already have my phone set up for my google account but I have several calendars in that account.
As far as I can see I can't select a particular calendar to sync my Outlook items to. It looks like only Google calendar items can be changed.
I don't suppose you know the name of the outlook plugin? I tried googling for it and came across way too many dead beat apps.
Just to repeat I'm looking for a way (or a phone app) that allows my to select a specific google calendar for the items I have synced to my phone using HTC Sync.

Thanks for the link and the suggestion.
unfortunately, it's "too similar" to the Google Sync tool and therefore my company think it's a security threat (I know there are worse things out there but go figure )
I suspect that I need something that works on my phone and allows me to select different calendars to sync back to.

If I'm understanding correctly you want your Outlook calendar to be synced "to the cloud" (in this case Google) which you can then access from your phone (or online when you don't have your phone).
I had a look and can't find any apps that will copy your phone calendar to a Google calendar. As you are using Outlook 2003 and can't use Google sync your options are a bit limited.
If your company uses Microsoft Exchange then you should already have remote access to your email / calendar on the web and you can also connect your Desire to this using the built in HTC calendar app. Your IT person should be able to get you set up fairly easily.
The only other solution I know of is to use a third party sync program - outlook 2003 doesn't support saving calendars in ical format (which you could have used as a manual workaround).

Fair enough. Thanks for trying. Unfortunately my company are quite backward about their use if IT so pretty much any sync app or Exchange integration is out.

I am using gSyncIt. Not free, but it does the job between Google and Outlook. A lot of option to customize the sync, including several calendars.
Not sure what method it uses to sync, so maybe not working for you. But I know my company IT is as well in "stone age" and blocks nearly everything. But gSyncIt works.

Hi all. I am going to find a Calendar app to sync with sharepoint calendar as the process to sync it with gmail calendar is too convoluted.
Does anyone know of something that can do this?

Thanks, does this require the calendar to already be connected to the device in some way? Android doesn't seem to natively support connecting to a sharepoint calendar, don't know if its ASP related or nobody has made one for HTTP.
Hi, I wrote "Calendar Manager" to create new offline calendars on my device (Samsung i9000). Since custom ROMs like AOKP or CM don't ship with the "local/phone/offline" calendar, known from Samsung devices. Its free, no demo, no ads.
For anybody who wants their appointments or tasks safe on their's device, just download the apk, install (remember to allow 3rd party apps in your device settings), and create as many calendars as you wish.
The offline/local calendars integrates into the standard calendar module of Android, so you can use them with any calendar application, like the stock calendar viewer.
You can sync the calendar for example with MyPhoneExplorer to Outlook, Thunderbird/Lightning and other programs. But it will never be copied into the cloud.

I was already doing some research on the Android contacts database. I have no clue why, but it works completely different than the calendar database and on top the documentation is very - lets say compact. Almost as if someone doesn't want you to create offline data storages...
Neverthelesse - will try to implement it in my (very little) spare time.

This would effectively mean we can use offline calendar without ever using Google sync. Wonder why Google does not launch a calendar application by default. Really appreciate the efforts buddy.
In any case, it would be nice if we could import icalendar files directly into Google Calendar(this is obviously not related to your software). Google contacts allows you to import any VCF file directly into contact but icalendar does not seem to work.

It was written to run on the custom roms like CM or AOKP which are base on Android 4.x, ICS, JB but don't ship with the local calendar. Samsung stock roms have the local "phone calendar" but CM does not, and they don't want to integrate it because they feel it doesn't make sense to not backup all your data to google. Well, I feel it makes sense to have my appointments stored locally only, so when I flashed AOKP I had to come up with a simple solution to lock Google out from my data.
(By the way I noticed, that Google syncs data from their calendar storage even if you switch syncing off. Weird isn't it?)

Really? Even if under settings you disable Sync feature it still syncs to Google Calendar is it?
I am surprised because ultimately I was going to use your app to get the Calendar DB started(if and when I get the latest Android phone running 4 or later) and sync stuff back and forth from the phone using MyPhoneExplorer. I do not want them synced anywhere. If an old Palm or for the matter the dated Windows Mobile can do it, I cannot fathom Google's reason for disallowing this feature.
Does anyone know if something similar is available fro pre ICS ROMs?
FYI, the people from MyPhoneExplorer may include offline calendar creation capabilities in their App in some future version. They intend to make it work on older systems, too.

Hi, thanks for using my app and providing feedback.
I think the reason may be, that you disabled "calendar storage". This is an internal database in android, that holds all appointments from all calendars. So if it is disabled, no app can access any calendar. Google did really choose bad names for their apps and services. Here is my "Little Dictionary Of Confusing Google Identifiers and Explanations what they really mean" - that I wrote when figuring out what is NOT documented in the SDK (maybe intentionally, so that everybody just uses Google Calendar Sync...).
Google Calendar =
1) the google calendar web service
2) the google app that displays any calendar
3) the google calendar concept as a whole
Calendar Storage =
a relational database (guessing sqlite) that holds a table for all calendars and a table for all appointments. All calendars that want to use the Android calendar APIs and show the "system" calendars, must use it
Sync Provider =
a service in Android that syncs things from the phone to the cloud
Google Calendar Sync =
the sync provider service that moves appointments from Calendar Storage to Google Calendar (1) and vice versa
Local Calendar =
just a usual calendar in Calendar Storage. BUT it gets a a flag set, that it stays local. So none of all the Sync Providers has a chance to access that data.
Calendar Manager =
creates entry in calendars table in Calendar Storage with "local" bit set.

I just stumbled across CalendarSync which can create a local calendar in Gingerbread (and maybe older versions, too). I don't see any limitations in doing this through the "free" version on the dev's web page, and don't know or care what else it does. I intend to use the local calendar with MyPhoneExplorer.

I am a newB to android and smart phones. I enabled both calendar and calendar storage, and then tried your app to create an offline calendar, it did work perfectly fine. I have selected only the local calendar that i had created with your app to be 'calendar to display' options in the default calendar. Sorry to have bothered you with my lack of experience and knowledge. And thanks for your long and patient reply
Just a short update: I did some more programming and investigation regarding Google's spontaneous synchronizations. I can confirm that you pull the plug by disabling "Google Calendar Synchronization" and "Google Contacts Synchronization" services.

What about an offline contact app as well? You write on your homepage "The problem doesn’t arise when it comes to contacts management, since Android ships with a built-in local contacts account that you can use. On most devices it is simply called “Phone” and co-exists with the Google-account-contacts.".
I've just checked a an AOSP ROM (Slim Bean for the Galaxy S2). There is no option to add a phone account, just one or more google accounts. So, I'm not able to use local contacts.
If you could develop a similar contact storage, this would be awesome!

Any suggestions for an app that will sync MS Outlook (Calanedar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes, etc) from an XP/Win7 machine? I wouldn't cry if it also replaced the native Calendar and Contact apps... which imo, are pretty weak. Not concerned w/ email.
Btw, new to the Nexus 7... this is one cool machine!

Calendar, Contacts, and Mail (if you do want it anyway) can be synced natively through Android, with the AOSP e-mail app.
For the other exchange tools, you could find one by searching Exchange ActiveSync on the Play Store.
In the odd case that this WASN'T your answer, and you aren't using Outlook for Corporate purposes, I'd imagine the way to sync your contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes would be to export them through Outlook itself and importing them into Google's services.
Contact export is simple in outlook, all major mail clients support import/export anyway. Calendar I'm not sure if you can set a URL to synchronize on Google Calendar or not, but you could probably export it, too. Same with tasks, and notes, but if those two fail you could probably copy and paste.
Microsoft office is currently in the works for android and iOS believe it or not. Release early next year.

Thanks Asovse1. I'm not Exchange/Corporate based. Searching the app store, I hit on the likes of VC Organizer, mOffice, Android-Sync, Local Sync, Deja Office, etc and was hoping for some user reviews.
Wonder if MS Office will include Outlook? or just the Word, Excel, Powerpoint components?

I use Touchdown for our company Exchange users on Android. It integrates fully and synchronizes with Exchange and Outlook good. Closest to Balackberry Exchange services on the market.

I have used VC Organizer Pro. Its been a while though. I originally bought it because it syncs everything including tasks. I have since moved on to Linux, gmail and the native Google tasks.

I use this on a daily basis MyPhoneExplorer for Outlook on XP/Droid on JellyBean combo which puts a client on both the PC and Phone/Tablet. It just works.
I'm using Moxier Mail for about 2 years now and it is one of the best Microsoft sync tools available. It is syncing everything you listed in the first post.
The only draw back is that is quite expensive (it is by far the most expensive app. I have on my android devices ).
