[Q] Games files - Internal Memory vs SD Card - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

I noticed my internal memory was filling up fast. 'Miscellaneous files' is up at 4.75GB. It turns out games are saving all their files on the device memory rather than SD card.
For example, when I look at the game 'Injustice' in the application manager, it tells me that the application is 55.7MB and the SD card app is 1.37GB. I initially though this was the game cleverly saving data files on my SD card, but that doesn't look like it's the case.
Is this normal? It's very misleading.

Yes it's normal, and annoying.
Samsung (in their wisdom) made the decision that the SD card should not be used for apps, most likely due to slow and unreliable SD cards causing problems. The device has a virtual / internal SD card, which is just a mount point on the device's main memory. Games install their resources to what the installer 'thinks' is the SD card, but is actually the internal SD card.
It's not possible, AFAIK, to move these files to the external (real) SD card without root. If you have root you can use Folder Mount to do the job https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount&hl=en_GB
I use this on my rooted Galaxy S4 and it works great. The dilemma currently is that the only root method for the Note 10.1 2014 sets the Knox Warranty Void bit to 1, invalidating your warranty.

[Q] How does the mounting work on the note2? Confusing.

I have my device set to save pictures to the SD card. I took a 20 burst shot to make some space be used.
I use FTP to access my SD card, the folder I access is /sdcard. That is also the folder I open in ES file explorer.
For pictures, they are saved in /sdcard/dcim
All makes sense, right?
Now, in the settings, I see:

http://i.imgur.com/uhQ0U.png
So really, my SD card is not used by anything, also, the internal storage seems to be 10GB.
So there is a fake SDcard 6GB big? Which is apparently the only one I can access?
How do I use my REAL SD card for pictures saving? And what is even the location of the actual SD card?
This all seems really strange to me. In my previous phone (HTC EVO3D) there was just the root folder, which had an sdcard folder, which was the actual SDcard. I wonder why there is a fake SDcard in this device? Anyone that can explain this?
Also, it is possible to have it like this:?
Main storage: 16gb
SDcard storage: 32gb, location of this: /sdcard
That would make SO MUCH more sense.
Have you tried /storage/extSdCard ?

That is correct, that is indeed the place of my external SD.
I did some testing, and found out:
Normal pictures are saved on the actual sd: /storage/extSdCard/DCIM
Burst shots are saved on the "fake" /sdcard/DCIM
I guess burst shots need more speed then my class10 sd? STUPID!
So again back to the other questions: why is this? And is there any way to combine this? THIS SUCKS for storage organization via FTP etc, also, downloaded game data is saved to the fake sd, which is again STUPID. Some games take 1gb or more. What if I need more then 6gb of apps/gamedata storage? WHY did they do it this way? This REALLY frustrates me already.
Somebody please tell me there is some way to make the actual SD the default SD.
On older (Gingerbread) Android devices there was internal storage, and the sd card that you plugged in was "sdcard". On almost all newer devices there are actually three or more places things are stored:
internal (~2gb depending on the device, holds the android system, "personal" which stores phone info like contacts. This is what you flash/odin stuff to)
sdcard (Looks like any sdcard to android. Usually mounted to /mnt/sdcard. This is the "internal" sd card, built into your device)
sdcard 2 (The external sd card you put into the sd card slot. Usually mounted to /mnt/extSdCard, as noted above)
There are a few ways this is implemented. The internal sd card might be partitioned, with "internal" being on the first partition and "sdcard" on the second. This way you can format the internal sdcard without bricking your device.

But that sucks? I also just noticed moving apps to sd is no longer an option. But how about gamedata? GTA3 takes 1GB. Some games take 2GB, but the only place to put those apps is in the internal 10GB storage? And pictures are storable on external SD, but not burst shots, which are saved in the internal SD? Stupid.
I just can't imagine any way this is positive.
Apparently it's a jellybean limitation - it's really putting me off ATM - there are many threads complaining about this feature but most feel that it is not going to change.
This next bit is all from my reading (I do not use android yet because of this storage holdup):
Apparently Google either doesn't want us to, or can't, use SD cards to store apps etc (makes sense - too easy to pirate etc) but why codes encrypting them to your device can't be included I don't know. Due to something to do with the file structure, particularly of the SGS3 and SGNII, JB can't/won't link to them. There are work rounds - nearly all (if not all) of which require rooting - they do work (according to reports) - just search the xda SGNII forum to find many posts on this. Unfortunately, even App2SD can't move the apps due to this file structure (this bit is samsung design)
For me it's a real shame, I am a Bit of an app addict, and, although I don't have many games (use mostly productivity apps) the game I do get are the "console games" which have a large footprint and larger installation files - I'd fill 16GB in a day. So I'm having to make a choice - 16GB and root, wait for the 32GB (looks likely the 64GB will never make international release) or just not bother at all. Ill probably go 16GB and root as it would save me a fortune on contract (due to Tethering feature). Shame really, for me, 90% of the attraction of android was "unlimited" storage - it still is, but just a bit more difficult to get.
Didn't know about burst shot storage (annoying but can see why) - presumably you can transfer them to external SD afterward if needed?
Snote only saves on the internal SD too!
Hey I just put in a 64gb microsd and formated it. It shows up mounted and avaliable space but I cant view the photos I had on it on my phone. When I connect it I get to see them on my computer. So how do I access extsdcard

Moving apps onto SII SD card

Hi guys I think this is the most appropriate place for this thread. This is also my first post so go easy on me. I have a SII (rooted with CM9) and I'm having problems moving apps to my external 8gig MicroSD.
The problem is that this phone appears to be partitioned so there is internal memory and "SD card" memory which is also internal I noticed this before the purchase of the MicroSD. After I inserted the microSD and turned on my phone I went to locate my SD using 'ES File Explorer' my phones "SD card" is located under "/sdcard" and my ACTUAL microSD is found in "/mnt/emmc".
My questions are why is my actual SD identified as emmc (I'm not even sure what that means)
and
How can I get my phone to move apps to my external microSD and not what the phone thinks is my SD card which is actually internal phone memory
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The bad news is, you canĀ“t place apps on the real external SD card.
But you could place other thing like pictures and music there to save space on the internal storage (internal sdcard).
Ps.: I think the meaning of emmc is External MultiMedia Card
There is unfortunately no easy way to move it to external SD. However, if you are interested to dig more, I'll just say that I am doing it by binding a custom mount point. It is a dirty method though.

[Q] Move apps to the EXTERNAL SD card??

Any way to truly move apps to the external SD card?
I have just recnetly learned that moving apps "to the SD card" in the settings>apps menu doesnt truly move them to the external SD card.
Why is that?
I dont have many apps yet, but it seems the apps i do have slowly get larger and larger as i use them and they save user data. (game progress for example).
Id like to know that I could at least move things that i dont care how fast they load to a truly external SD card (along with my wallpapers, ringtones, etc)
Even if theres a manual way via USB, thats cool. Just hoping someone with more than about a months worth of experience with a captivate glide (or really, i guess any phone that by default wont let you) could give some advice.
thanks!

You have sd card integrated to the board, its not true sd card. You can swap internal sd to external sd, then you can use same move function to use external micro sd card as application storage.

So theres no way to just manually tell it to move there without messing up whats already on the internal storage?
The Android system still has no option to move app to external sd. You can copy everything from internal (built-in) sd to external and apply change-fstab.zip to make Android think that your external sd is internal and vice versa. Works on every 4.4 rom. No performance drawbacks if using class 10 sd card. Worked for me flawlessly and thanks to bubor for this great feature.
And for manually... There's an app called Link2SD. It's some sort of workaround. You make second partition on your external SD and move apps there, leaving links for Android system on your internal storage. You can find it in google market, be sure to read instructions first.

I remember trying link2sd on a friends tablet recently. it recognized certain apps as moveable, but when i actually tried to move them (on an SD that i had already partitioned) it said failure every time.
But im not sure i want to switch my storage entirely. I would just like to allow, say another 4 gigs on my SD card (with the other 4 being for wallpapers, ringtones, etc). i have an 8 gig card right now.
Then you should try link2sd here. Basically, no other options, unless you wish to emulate Link2SD work with some scripts and move apps manually. I saw some patches for Lenovo phones to combine internal storage or something like that, but they will not work on Glide obviously.

Issues moving certain apps to External SD

I have a LG G3 running stock M 6.0
I'm trying to increase my 16GB flash size or at least move my big apps to my external SD.
I did OK with Spotify and some others, but few others (like some games) are not moving their data to my external sd.
I have problems with those apps detecting my Internal Storage as my external SD card due to the fact that the Android mounts the internal storage in
/sdcard/
linked to some other folder
/storage/emulated/0
while my real external SD card is actually mounted on
/storage/7FB0-1DEE/
What on the earth is this thing calling my internal storage, sdcard, and my external sdcard to some strange mounted folder with a weird code that of course my apps have no idea wth is that...
Any ideas how to workaround that? Any guidelines will be very much appreciate it.

PD. I don't want to use any App2SD or FolderMount rooted 3rd parties to create logical links/shortcuts and "pretent" or make thing the app the files are on the internal storage, when they are on the external sd. That thing works OK. I rooted my stock FW and tested it that way, but I dont want my phone to have root access.
PD2. I installed RR582-Nougat711 to test this Ext SD adoption (which is not available on G3 Stock M 6.0). It sort of worked OK but I lost my ext sdcard when connecting it to my PC. I'm not willing to make my external sd part of the internal storage anymore. That think is awkward, encrypting my card and losing portability to MTP transfer.

Not enough storage space

I recently bought a Redmi Note 7 and installed a SD card for extra storage. The system shows that I have the extra storage but when I try to download an app I get a storage error. How do I install and move my installed apps to the SD card. This seems like a very serious flaw in the design.
Same problem, any solution?
I'm having the same problem with my Redmi 7, have you found any solution to it? I can't find any way of moving apps and content to my external SD card. it is getting a bit ridiculous now at this stage.
Install DiskUsage from play store, and see what is taking up space
there are two ways to use SD card to save app data
1. enable adaptive storage (on our device it has to be enabled through adb, google it); when using this option sd card won't be usable on other devices
2. partition your sd card, basically you have to create a second SD card partition where you can save your data, then you can use apps like app2sd or link2sd to move apps to SD card
