Bricked... Which rom to recover - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I need some advice on which ROM to flash back on my phone. I am new to custom ROMs and managed to hard brick my phone. I am going to try a Jig to see if I can get into download mode, however, if I do that I am not sure what ROM to flash back onto my phone. It's a galaxy S3 i747. When this all started I was running JB 4.1.1 on it. Then I flashed CM10 and that went great. After I flashed CM10 my phone said that I was on JB 4.3. Did CM update JB and the bootloader? I know that trying to flash an older bootloader can cause troubles. Afater I had CM running I tried to flash LeanKernel and this is when I bricked my phone. So my questions is, do I need to flash the ROM for JB4.1.1 or for JB 4.3? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Look buddy, the first thing you want to do is flash the latest STOCK rom for you're model. After you've done that you can now backup you're stock rom via recovery (TWRP recommended), after that you now have a stable rom to return to just in case you fail to flash a custom rom. And I would recommend one of the stock mod roms to get the use of all of Samsung's exclusive features. Good luck, and feel free to ask any more questions.

Hey thanks. I really appreciate the help. I got in a little over my head so I'm just trying to get ahead of the learning curve as quick as possible. Now I've searched around for the stock 4.3 flash able ROM and am having trouble finding a clear cut download for it. Do you have a recommendation of where I can find the JB 4.3 stock to flash with ODIN?

There isn't an odin flashable 4.3 rom for i747. The last thing there is is 4.1.1 then the 4.3 you would take as an ota. I highly doubt cm updated your bootloader. Floating around the forums is an sd unbrick method. You could try that. I don't have experience with it, but quite a few people have. Good luck.

Maybe this would work : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233 Do some research on it first then let me know. And if you want a good and stable custom rom I recommend using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504903. Just don't choose the note 3 option, choose the stock.

That is only a method used to root you're phone, not to unbrick it.

But to root I flashed a ROM with Odin. The ROM is linked on that page. At least that is my understanding of how rooting works. Wouldn't that've a good ROM to use to un-brick?

Not entirely sure. Never updated to 4.3 on a stock ROM. It was on JB 4.1 before I flashed CM10. However once I flashed CM10 the settings page said my phone was on JB 4.3. So not sure if the bootloader got updated or not.

Thanks so much everyone for the help. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately the Jig did not work, so it is all a moot point in the end. Looks like the phone is going off to get JTAGed.

[Q] just rooted my att gs3, need help flashing rom

I have rooted my gs3 and need help. I am on stock rooted 4.0.4 ics. I want to go to the latest pacman rom. What do I need to do?
Have you installed a recovery?
Download GooManager if you want TWRP or ROM Manager if you want CWM recovery.
Either one will allow you to flash a compatible ROM.
I really like TWRP. User interface is easy. Goo.im app makes it easy to find compatible ROMS to flash for your device. I don't know if PACMAN is on goo, tho.

If you are on stock ics you'll most likely need to update your bootloader after you update your recovery if it isn't updated already.
You'll need to go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
This will need to be done before you flash almost any rom that's been updated in the last couple weeks.
You might be up to date but I doubt it.

Definitely go with TWRP. The user interface is much friendlier than CWM. It is also really good from the standpoint of being careful when wiping or installing things with their "slide to ____" feature.

Newbie looking for some guidance

Hello fellow members of XDA,
I am new to this whole thing of rooting and installing custom rom, so I’m kind of overwhelmed. I have done some poking around prior to this post and stumbled upon the Sticky and was wondering if the “[REF] [GUIDE] Welcome to your device, the Galaxy S III - by theexel” is this the standard to what I should be following?
I have a T999 on 4.1.2. I appreciate your time, recommendations, and advice that you have to offer. Thanks!
Update:
I was hoping you could answer some questions I have for Sanranhai's stockMod 4.3. If i followed the instructions while flashing the rom + one of the modems I'm still able to go back to older roms correct? Also if i decided to cmw restore to my backup (4.1.2 image) will the modem be the one I flashed from saranhai's or will it go back to how it originally was before? Thank you for your time.
Yes that's a Good Guide. What do you intend or trying to do ?

My intention was to root, and to flash a stable rom (hopefully 4.3) for daily use, getting rid of some bloatware to speed up my phone, getting a new feel and look for me phone and increase battery life if possible. I know my model is receiving the official 4.3 but according to this forum most people don't like what Samsung did to it. Since I'm still in the earlier software version, I thought I'd give custom roms' a try.

If you are looking for a pretty good stable 4.3 ROM I'd recommend Saranhai's StockMOD 4.3 .. I used it as my DD (Daily Driver) the past month but have been on Doc's 4.3 ROM before that (they both use the same Base and Doc had to stop because he Bricked his S3 fiddling around with new things).. .. I wouldn't recommend doing the Official 4.3 Update, many people updated and the problem is you can NOT downgrade firmware afterwards, yes flash other 4.3 Roms but no downgrading.. Also the whole Warranty Bit isn't attractive to people.. ... Last night I flashed CM11 4.4.1 (KitKat) and been using it since then. So far I am very happy with it, everything that I MYSELF use daily hasn't had any flaws. Batter life has been decent also but their have been mixed results.. If you're gonna take the leap into rooting/flashing just remember to always read the OP's instructions as well as make sure its for YOUR device (ie: T999, T999L, etc).. Reading and educating yourself is key!

I'll give rooting a try after I'm done with finals. What sort of things do i need to backup for safety measures as that guide isn't very detailed in that aspect of how to do it and what I WILL WANT to backup.
You are not at risk of loosing the Data. But if you feel like it, please mae sure your contacts are successfully synced to Google. If there are Games whose progress or score you want to back up then do that. Apart from that the usual pictures and music stuff.
Try My Backup app. It will let you make a backup even if you are not rooted.

According to the sticky guide I should be following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 but, there's a note in bold that said "Do not flash a prior release after flashing this, it has been reported to cause bricks, read the thread for more information." Does that mean after using that latest version to root my t-999 i cant go back to older roms?
The guide also recommend i should start with 4.0.4 roms, should i ignore that?

You assume correct. You need to root first. Take the Guide advice. Do not Try to flash latest 4.3 version of Root66. Use the 4.2 version instead. So long you stay completely away from Samsung's release of 4.3, you will do fine.

You can use Doc's Leaked Rom or Saranhai's StockMod just fine. No issues there. Only thing you should remember, is that if you use the Root66 4.3, it will update your Bootloader to UVUEMJC. If that happens, you will never be able to flash previous bootloaders or previous Root66 versions. In addition, this new bootloader introduces eFuse and a new Warranty Counter. Those can not be reset once tripped.

Samsung 4.3 is Official OTA that's correct.

Flash stock rom - Keep Root & CWM

Hello, I am currently rooted and have CWM 6.0.4.3. installed. I'm on CM11 but want to go back to stock.. Is there an easy way to keep root and go back to stock. Want stock for a few functions that ROMS dont seem to be offering but can keep root and CWM ??
Thanks.
Which phone do you have? You could try flashing a pre-rooted stock ROM via Odin. Then use Odin to flash CWM.
Bt its better to firstly install ur stock rom and then again root it as it takes no longer than 5 mins

Ok perfect, thats what I was looking for. Phone btw is S3 - d2att - SGH i747) Sounds good to install the stock rom and re-root.. I'm sure its here but I have searched everywhere to find a tutorial on this and I cannot find a straight answer.
Would you mind giving me the steps or pointing me to a thread that explains how to and has the files in need to download ?

Do you know if there is a step by step on this somewhere ? I dont mind going back to complete stock.. I can just re-root and flash CWM after.
OR
Maybe you could just answer the bigger question : the reason I want to go back to stock is I need to use MHL/HDMI which CM11 doesnt support. I dont want to go back to stock, I would rather even go to another ROM that supports mhl/hdmi.. but if I have to go to stock, than so be it.?
Were you running the stock AT&T 4.3 ROM before you switched to CM11?

Since you installed a custom recovery, that would have tripped the Knox counter which voids the warranty. It's not a problem if the phone is working properly.
Did you update to 4.3 or did it come with 4.3?
You may be better off installing a pre-rooted ROM.

It was quite some time ago but I believe I was on ICS 4.0.. and switch to CM from there. Im not worried about the counter for warranty, that's expired on my unit anyways. I just want to be able to use MHL/HDMI function.. so if fine with flashing pre-rooted.. or stock.. or a different ROM that support MHL/HDMI. Can you recommend the easiest route ?

I asked about 4.3 because the 4.3 bootloader cannot be downloaded. Flashing via mobile Odin will not touch the bootloader or modem.
You could try a pre-rooted rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin.
I use Philz Touch from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att

Ok thanks, I will do that. 1 thing I'm not quite sure of is the bootloader situation ? In the first tutorial there is a note : Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. How do I know ?
I see the steps as:
Extract tar file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the tar file
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and when done let phone reboot.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
For my situation, is it just that easy ?
Before flashing, verify the version of your bootloader.

If you are sure you have the Rogers i747m and you have never loaded a stock Rogers 4.3 ROM onto your phone, you could use desktop Odin to flash a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.
Flashing the pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM will return the phone to completely stock, wipe out all installed apps and data, and you will have root. I do not recommend flashing the Rogers 4.3 pre-rooted ROM from the link.
Once you are able to boot into the phone and set things up, you can flash Philz Touch from Odin which will give you a custom recovery on a rooted stock 4.1.2 ROM.

Are you using an AT&T s3? You're probably getting the failure in Odin because you have a 4.3 bootloader and the ROM you're flashing may be trying to downgrade the bootloader.

Yes, sorry i forgot to specify that I am indeed using an AT&T s3. So if I get the actual 4.3 rom and attempt to flash it, it should work? I just realized the rom I was attempting to flash was 4.1.1. I am just not with it today.

There is no full AT&T 4.3 ROM. AT&T released 4.3 via an OTA update. The full ROM has never been released.

You could try, but it recommends starting from a stock ROM or stock-based ROM.
Alternatively, you could flash another custom KK ROM for now and load a custom KK ROM that's based on the official release in the future.
The Valudis and Cyanfox ROMs are supposed to be quite good for battery life.

I flashed it anyway and it worked. Thanks so much for your help with everything. I am just glad to be back even if it means terrible battery life lol.

Glad it worked for you. Enjoy!

[Q] Noob needing to go back to stock, help please?

I figure instead of pulling my hair out for three days wading through various methods and likely brick, I'd swallow my pride and ask.
Here's where I'm at: I rooted and flashed Carbon rom way back when, everything was working alright, but with time, things are slowly starting to come apart. Yesterday, it's come to the point it can't be ignored. My nightly is ridiculously out of date, but I just haven't wanted to mess with it anymore. I'm about ready to get a new phone and I want everything back to fresh stock to give to a family member. I don't know where to start and what instructions are applicable or out of date. Model: I747, Android version: 4.4.2
I think I'm done experimenting with the rooting business, it's been a ride. If I could get some clear instructions on getting this phone back to stock, I'd be eternally grateful.
Help me xda community, you're my only hope.
What bootloader is on your phone? This is important to know before trying to get back to a stock ATT ROM.

Hey there, thanks for replying! Bootloader says I747UCUEMJB.
Since you are on an mjb bootloader, that means you had the ATT stock 4.3 ROM on the phone.
Unfortunately, ATT never realased a stock 4.3 ROM or 4.4.2 ROM. These were only available via OTA.
There was a thread where a stock mjb ROM was compiled for flashing in Odin, but for some members, the flash resulted in a bricked phone.
I had a feeling that might be the case. What are my options here?
I would install a custom recovery and flash a custom rom. There are custom ROMs based on stock Samsung ROMs.

This is the way to go. Since you most likely already have a custom recovery (assumed since you are running Carbon but verify first though), then it is just a matter of getting a new ROM. There are several custom TW ROMs based on 4.3 MJB. If you really want KK, you can flash the NE4 bootloader and modem along with a custom NE4 TW KK ROM. Please keep in mind that with both MJB and NE4 (KK) if you try to revert bootloaders, you will brick.
I am personally running S3RX 4.3 and have few to no issues other than what most people experience on stock anyway. Just have not had the time to move forward to KK as of yet.

Okay, so the bootloader is 4.3, but the Android version in settings says 4.4.2, how does that fit together? Just trying to understand what all this works.
Recovery is currently ClockworkMod. Since I'm planning on giving it to family, I'd like something that is as stable as possible, nothing fancy needed. What ROM would fulfill those needs?

Sounds like you are running a custom KK ROM in order to be using the 4.3 bootloader. A stock KK ATT ROM will not run on a 4.3 bootloader.
Before flashing to a custom KK ROM, make sure you are running the latest CWM. Carbon is a good ROM and should have reached a milestone build.

You are running the official 4.3 bootloader but an AOSP custom ROM. In the case of AOSP ROMs you can typically do this. As mention by audit13, if it was a custom ROM based off TW AT&T stock, you would only be able to run a modified TW 4.3 ROM.
