I read the biggest difference between the g2 and n5 are the battery life..
No biggy. I just bought one of these for £19.97 from eBay.
It's a "Power Bank" portable charger with a capacity of 15000mAh.
It has two ports, 1A and 2A. 2A is actually 2.1A, which is fairly fast. It's about 0.5 cm taller and wider than the n5, so you can just sit your phone comfortably on top of it while you eat lunch or whatever.
This charged my n5 from 14% to 100% in about 30 mins while playing a light game, and used roughly 1/5 of the total capacity.
I no longer charge my phones at night. I just charge this badboy. I've had it for a week and well, I haven't worried when my phone gets to 15% battery remaining by 12:00 due to heavy use and gaming. Neither has it ran out of charge before the end of the day, and it comes with 4 different adapters for varied devices.
It's perfect.
I found this new on eBay but you can find them anywhere, just make sure the get at least a 2.1A port for fast charging.

Hello everyone,
I hope to buy a power bank for my new Nexus 5.
I have made many search and I found that all power bank provide more that 1.2 A as output.
I noticed that the Nexus 5 official charger provide 1.2 A as output. So if I will buy a power bank that provides 2A or 3A, this will make problems for the phone battery ??
It is real that the important amperage charge the phone very fast, but this will not make problems for the battery ??

Ive got problems with the nexus 5's battery life aswell.
Now I'm using franco kernel and greenify and some other simple battery saving methods (no vibrate on key press, ...)
Feels like my battery life tripled it's juice!

Power supply life is an issue for everyone modern touch screen phones, besides the Nexus 5. Handsets increasingly becoming thinner, displays pack in additional pixels than ever, mobile systems are getting more source intensive, and battery power technology basically can’t sustain. The issue is additional evident using some smartphones than it's in some others, however, and the actual Nexus 5 confirms itself on the list of worst performers we've got tested lately with regards to battery lifetime.

The best feature I have ever had on a smartphone was a power saving feature from the HTC one.
So simple but amazing at saving battery life.
It turned off the data connection when you were not using it.
So simple.

Proper testing conditions disagrees with you. You'd be hard pressed to find a more efficient quad core 2300 mAh phone ever made. The G2's 3000 mAh it can not match though.

i actually brought the i.sound portable 16,000 mah battery. it's not as compact as the enercell but this thing is so worth it. 5 usb ports, can even charge iPad. so far it charges my standard battery from 0% to full in 4 hours. i've used it for 3 full charges and still have more than 50% juice left.

wow that things beastly
these are cool products but when my thunderbolt is charging the screen becomes unusable. it won't register touches and typing becomes impossible.

I got an ebay elcheapo for my ipod touch...it's rated at 1Mah...
Most of the time the touch screen is unresponsive and erratic.
Unplugging from it cures it instantly.
I ordered the HTC factory charger as a result to have one at home and office.
I only use aftermarket chargers, and I think it has more to do with the kernel than the charger itself. I have experienced this issue with Iso's and adrenelyn's but they charge faster. Ziggy I've had no issues with using the phone while charging and ziggy's kernel packs the biggest quadrant and linpack punch but not so great on the battery. A little off topic but fyi, because I have been playing around with this.
P.S. Really the best thing that works for me is to just to swap batteries in the evening time and if you are streaming something then again before bed time. Its like $12 with shipping for 2 1500mah rip off batteries that aren't as good as stock but more than enough to get you through the day.

Hmm...Interesting. I've only used Adryn and Imo's as well...or other's variants of Imo's.

External Batteries

I was just wondering whether external batteries are generally quite reliable, and if so what the best brands are to go for? I am looking for a relatively powerful one - I am not afraid of a little bit of cost, but obviously I don't want to spend masses.

I have a "Just Mobile Pro" or something like that.
4400mAh with 1000mA output.
But the EasyAcc 5600mAh (which I don't have) does sound better and cheaper (on Amazon).

Thanks not heard of New Trent before. Looks good. Can you confirm it's output charging current though? I can't find the spec on it anywhere. I'm assuming it's the full 1A, as it says it can charge an iPad, but could you please confirm? Looks like I'll be needing one!

I bought the Anker 5600mAh battery for my HTC Desire. Great quality, compact and it fits in my pocket very nicely. I bought it for $30 on ebay

It's good and bad . I was on the train heading home from work and I was charging my phone with the Anker charger. I accidentally pressed the power button twice and the flashlight turned on. Sitting across from me was this fairly attractive woman with a skirt on. She automatically crossed her legs and looked at me weird. I hope she doesn't think that i'm a pervert.

Good thing to remember with external battery packs is that during usage some of the charge goes to charging the battery while some is lost in heat. I think I read some where its normaly 30-40%. So for example a 11000mah battery will give you some where near 6600mah of charge so about 3 and half charges of the HTC One X.

The heat loss is inevitable but the capacity should be unchanged.
What the heat loss means is that you need more than 11000mAh to charge up the full 11000mAh battery due to the losses.
The tecknet is very good value. I am considering it at the moment

Yes but I'm talking about in the other direction. So once you have 11000mAh in the device and you charge a device that take 1800mAh you will actually use aprox 2520mAh in doing so. My numbers and calculations maybe a little flawed but my point is that you cant do a simple 11000 / 1800 = 6.1 charges as you need to take into account heat loss which is around 30 - 40% (so I read on one of the amazon reviews)
Either way both devices are nice and cost quite reasonable.

tried it with my ipad last night and it worked great, it worked as if it was on AC
Have got the Tecknet IEP987 7000mah battery myself. Has run through two charges of a sensation XL and my Fiio Headphone amp, and still around half full.
Am more than happy with it.

Not sure how efficient but if say 10% loss, we still get around 5 times charge with a 11000mAh batt. to a One X.
I am leaning towards the 7000mAh. Not sure if I need it or not...

Also don't forgot not to simply divide the battery pack's capacity by your phone's battery capacity to see how many times it will charge, unless you are charging it with the phone turned off.
With the phone on it is obviously using the usual amount for running the phone, whilst it is being charged. Add the current being drawn for keeping the phone running (say 250mA when awake) for the time it takes to charge (for me 2 hours) and you are looking at 500mAH. Add that to the capacity of your phone battery before dividing it by the capacity of your battery pack to figure out how many charges you'll get from it. Figures used are just for example purposes. Use a current widget if you want to know how much your phone is using.
Plus like a phone's battery, a new battery pack will take several charge cycles to reach full performance. Where as with a phone's battery which only takes about 2 weeks (charging it every day), a battery pack will take that much longer to get the full performance out of, as you wont likely be charging it more than once a week/month.
And then there's the battery indicators. These New Trent ones look sensible, but I once purchased a Proporta Turbocharger 5000mAHr unit. It had three blue LED battery status lights that were always on if charging. If you looked directly at them they'd burn your retinas out your skull. They could be seen from space. Stupidly and comically bright. They HAD to eat into some of the capacity.
Copper losses over the cable at the distances involved in your average charging cable will be negligible. If you really want to reduce it, don't use those silly skinny retracting yo-yo charging cable things that some of them come with. Use a decent quality USB to microUSB cable. The higher the guage of the cable and quality of copper, the less volt-drop there is. Another Gold 3500 battery review...slightly scientific

Wanting more battery life and having reading a few positive reviews about the Gold 3500, I got one from Amazon (UK). The numbers 3500 vs 2500 mah indicate I should get around 40% extra battery life compared to stock but having played with RC cars and helicopters running LiPo packs I know that pack ratings aren't everything.
Actual battery capacity depends on the discharge rate, the more juice you pull the less the effective battery capacity you get with a lot of energy wasted in heat due to internal battery resistance. Fact of life with batteries of all chemistry.
My original battery is about 6 months old now, charged daily from anywhere between 0-50% remaining. In day to day use the Gold does seem to last longer based on my 6 months experience with the original battery but how much better is it?
I charged the batteries in my phone and turned the phone off once it hit 100% but kept the charger on as it seemed to charge for a bit longer.
Using my RC battery charger, I used the discharge function setting the low voltage cut off to 3V (standard for lithium batteries) and set the discharge rate at a constant 300 mah. Using a constant discharge rate may not be realistic but it does allow for a fair comparison, keep in mind that our phones power usage jumps up and down depending on use.
Results

6 month old stock battery rated at 2500 mah = 2364 mah (which is what I would expect from a battery with 180 cycles on it)
Brand new Gold 3500 rated at 3500 mah = 2524 mah (a bit disappointing but at least as good as a new stock battery)
Now the discharge rate can make a big difference to effective battery capacity, it might be that the 3500 mah rating on the Gold batteries was determined using a very low discharge rate or they discharged it to below 3V.....or its just a gold wrapper over a stock battery
Interesting to note that the stock Sammy battery is pretty true to its rated capacity, so the perceived increase in battery capacity I experienced with the Gold battery is probably just the difference between a 6 month old battery and a new one.
Oh well, at least I have a spare battery now and didn't pay a fortune for the Gold. The Gold does seem to last a bit longer than the 6 month old stock on so I am happy enough with it.
Notes:
Gold battery had been in use for 2 weeks to run it in
Only one discharge cycle was performed
Could be that I have a dud battery, you results may differ
In real day to day use the discharge properties of the Gold may result in a higher 'effective' capacity

Mignon, maybe your can get a replacement from thrm and test again. Especially if you have a dud.
Do notice I notoce a significant increase in battery life after charging it past 100%. Probably placebo, I dont know.
Don't think I have a dud, in my experience lion batteries either work or don't. It's not a crap battery, it's just as good as stock but doesn't match the advertised 3500 mah rating.

I got 3500mah gold battery. I review it.
My rom is ultimate rom v5.1, and my stock battery was 11 months old.
Screen on time was always less than 4 hours.
Yesterday I got the gold battery, and I used it up to 1% without first charge, then I charged it 12 hours to initilize the battery.
So unpluged the charge, and tested it as the same usage. I always downclocked to 1000MHz, wifi on, no use 3g data, brightness is zero, bluetooth and gps is off. I downloaded 15 files and apps today, listened to music, did multi windows function, and almost used web browsing.
Now my battery is just 1%. Screen on time is over 5 and half hours. Obviously the battery was improved.
If official JB are released, the battery will be improved more.
But this is not made in Japan. This is made in China because Japanese is so strange on package.
Some of Chinese battery are so dangerous and may be fake, but this gold battery is good one.

I dropped my stock and it works perfectly till 55% then it dies. Gonna throw it away soon. So some of the cells could be damaged. Its not either they work or dont m8.

I am pretty sure most mobile 3.7v phone batteries are single cell, only the mugen styled battery extender jobs that require a different back cover run two cells in parallel.
Remaining capacity is usually just a function of cell voltage so it's strange that it should just tank at 55%. Battery protection circuits generally prevent discharge past 3.0 volts so not sure what it's going on there.
Either way it sounds like you need a new battery, wouldn't risk recharging a damaged cell...

yeah its strange. Stuff started to happen at 50, whrn restarting bat percentage dropped to 10-15%. Without restartingbit would go down normally in beginning. Now after using it some time and dropping it its 55%.
Its definitely it either works or doesnt.
Anyway I dont think it's single cell.
i have the same battery bought it a few months back i'am very satisfied....
it's not a 40% extra time even framework it designed to work with less voltage since after using it below 15% i notice always fake meter value, when you keep your phone asleep for half an hour you will notice an increase in percentage. not accurate but runs fine, its a spare and a great replacement i dont care if it's slightly powerful than stock at least its the same size for 4 extra hours.. i never needed to change case nor a cover of anything its great

Thanks for your time and efforts - your results are similar to my amateurish measurements performed twice and reported on the other 3500 battery thread. Having no device to test the actual capacity, I just used the continuous video playback in plane mode with minimal backlight. The time to full discharge was almost identical in both cases.

It won't damage your phone, but if you are going to use it as a gps while charging, it will probably keep dranig the battery, 800mah is not enough to charge it while screen is on and gps is running

I dropped my stock and it works perfectly till 55% then it dies. Gonna throw it away soon. So some of the cells could be damaged. Its not either they work or dont m8.

Why is that?
After i've received mine, i've never ran out of battery during my day. Definitively improved the usage of my phone.

QI Charger/Power Bank

I wanted to get QI charger w/ my Nexus and ended up getting one that included a 10,000 mAh powerbank for basically the same price.
I thought it was going to feel pretty cheap, but to my surprise it seems like its pretty good quality. For 40 bucks for both a QI and a power bank in one it's pretty kick arse! So be forewarned the "IN STOCK" status is BS it ships from China so don't expect within a week; I think I got mine in 3 weeks.
Also the instructions are horrendous, not sure who translated it but its actually comedy. I think says something like... "Use it if it bulges, smells or smokes." (instead of dont) and has FAQ's that have no questions. Literally every line in the instructions does not make sense.
So you can use this as a normal QI charger. As a powerbank you can use QI or plug it in through the USB ports (2) which makes more sense so you dont have 30% power loss as with QI. Powerbank is same shape as phone just about twice as thick and slightly larger width and length. Finished material is smooth so if you have a hard plastic case it may easily slide off or not become centered well enough to charge. I have a case no issues charging through the case. It does also get a full charge and it does not get my phone more than warm (same as wall charger).

I'd be very interested in a test to see what the actual capacity of this is. Im always wary with a no name brand battery from China because they tend to always overstate their battery capacities. Wish there were some reviews, but I might give it a go anyway to test it out myself.

Its weird how almost all of the qi power banks on amazon have no reviews. Seems like something everyone should have. Ridiculously useful. I am wondering why the one posted above is a good 25% cheaper than all the others of the same 10,000 mah capacity though.
Would absolutely love for the OP to test how many full charges of the Nexus 5 he could get from the device using USB and then Wireless charging, but that would probably take a while. Also OP, when you say that the case is smooth, is it smooth like the soft touch plastic on the back of the Nexus 5 or smooth like the shiny plastic on galaxy phones?

no problem but may be a few days I'm getting over a day cycle on my nexus so far. I bought it mostly for the QI charger the bank was a bonus/ I will keep a log but try and get full cycles out of it to make it easier.
As far as the smoothness it is more like the shiny plastic on the galaxy phones. My phone has a plastic case it doesn't slide to much but I could see if it got bumped it would move. I had bought a screen protector someone posted that i don't like it's kind of rubbery or tacky feel i was thinking about taking it off and putting it on the charger so it was a little more "grippy".
Give me a few days I'll put up some stats for you

Oh I know, but the ones sold under the badge of Samsung or LG are usually dead on their mah capacity ratings. Not so much for random Chinese brands I havent heard of before.

Amazons having a 50% off deal on battery packs if you buy the RAVpower qi charger. I just picked up the charger and a RAV 8400mAh pack for just over 60 bucks. I've been wanting both for a while now and this deal was just to good to pass up. I do a lot of backpacking and have been debating between a battery pack vs. a solar charger for some time now as well. The pack is actually lighter than any of the solar charges I was looking at. And for 18 bucks was a no brainer.
so here are some stats on this as a power bank not sure how much power loss over a few days is normal but after a full charge of the bank using the cable here is what I came up with:
night one charger started at 51% .49 of the full 2300 mAh nexus 5 battery = 1127 mAh
night two started at 18% .82 = 1886
night three started at 22% .78 = 1794
night four started at 28% .72 = 1656
night five started at 9% died at 32% = 529

TOTAL mAh= 6992

Interesting. And that is using the cable and not the Qi wireless charging? Its always said that Qi will have around a 30% loss in efficiency, which would make your numbers perfectly in line with what a 10,000 mah battery should do. Of course if you were using a cable it might just be that the low cost of the device translates to a less efficient transfer of energy. Still able to get roughly 3 full charges out of the power bank is pretty awesome.

Yea thats through the cable, I know even turned off there is power loss on rechargeable batteries but I don't know what is normal power degradation equates to in a percentage. I agree though roughly 3 full charges may not be a full 10,000 mAh bank, but at the price even if it equates to a 7000 bank its not bad. Throw in the QI (which is mainly what I bought this for anyway) and this is pretty sweet deal :laugh:

it does shut off once it gets a full charge, using the cable as a powerbank. Never tried QI as a bank doesn't make sense so don't know this way.

Review of Intocircuit® Power Castle 12000mAh Portable Dual-Port External Battery Pack

This is an amazing battery with a great build quality and performance that is just out of the park!
In the box, you get the battery itself, a micro USB cable, a really nice carrying pouch, a HISCARD warranty card, and an instruction manual.
First Impressions: This is so nice! It feels so smooth and premium in your hands. The orange parts of the battery finish it off very nicely. Pressing the button to illuminate the battery percentage blew me away. It is a really bright blue LED indicator that grows on you immediately. Using it was a breeze. I simply used the supplied cable and plugged it into the battery. I then plugged that into my phone, and it was charging. I didn’t even have to press the button, it detected that the device was connected automatically.
After using this for a while, I can safely say that this is downright a great battery! It does exactly as it promises and this is a product you have to have in this day and age if you don’t already. I was able to charge up my Samsung Galaxy S3 in no time with the 2.1A port. If you ever find yourself with no place to plug in your phone and/or if your phone dies, this will be your savior. This battery is just that good, I don’t know what else to say. Intocircuit got the design, build, performance, and feeling just right! It’s a perfect battery, and I haven’t experienced any conflicts with it.
I would recommend this to anybody who is in the market for a well-priced battery that has a great build quality, feels good, and works well.
Overall, this is a great product and I highly recommend it. One of my favorite things about this battery isn’t just the metal build, but also the carrying pouch. It is a great accessory that makes this product perfect!

Just ordered one of these and am waiting for it to arrive. It's looks great and seems a bit slimmer than last year's model while having a larger capacity.
Yes, last year model (11,200 mAh) was not good. Very poor efficiency where you loose over 40% of capacity after conversion and also a poor standby time where I suspect LED display was draining the battery at high rate.
@Mon431, charge it up to 100% and set it aside for a week, and come back with a reading of remaining battery without using it to charger anything. See if it drains in standby. Also, you can try how many times you can charge a phone or a tablet with a known battery capacity off this 12000 mAh battery to see the actual capacity.

Good idea @vectron, I've started the standby experiment like you mentioned. It's been one day and so far, it is still at 100%.

I decided to do your experiment for an extra week, just to see how it would hold up. After two weeks of not using the battery after fully charging it, the battery is still at 100%! This battery definitely has a great standby time.
