[DIY] Built in QI charger - laptop - Nexus 5 Accessories

So I ordered 2 qi chargers without a case from here:
QI wireless charger circuit board
I was always keeping my phone on the palm rest of my laptop so I decided, I might as well add a qi charger to my palm rest so that it charges my phone while I work.
[You might want to have a bulkier laptop to do this.]
This way when I go out some where for several hours, I don't have to take a charger (wireless or wired) with me.
Maybe someone finds this to be usefull. Hell, I did for sure.
You'll need:
-caution and attention
-qi charger circuitboard & coil
-soldering iron & solder
-space in your laptop for the coil under the palm rest, or where you want to put it
-a usb port which you can draw power from
-thicker copper cable for connecting the coil with the circuitboard (if they dont fit beside each other)
So what I did:
- first I desoldered the coil from the CB, and removed the metal plate from under the coil

-then I glued the circuit board on the base of the laptop just over the ram slots with hot glue
- I took apart a USB cable to use the connector, so I can disassembly my laptop even with these wires inside
-I soldered the usb cable's 4 wires onto a usb port to draw power
-I made the coil's cable longer so I can position it under the palm rest & glued the coil to the base of the palm rest with hot glue
after that put the laptop all back together and test it out ,with caution!!
If everithing is as it is supposed to be you'll have a qi charger palm rest & you can forget about taking a charger with you.

Don’t know that I’ll ever leave my phone in that location often—I use my keyboard a lot—but neat idea nonetheless!

Interesting. FYI the two center pins of the USB port are unused in this case, those are data pins. And you should leave the ferrite plate on the back of the coil when possible (I realize there may not have been enough room in your case). It shields other components from the magnetic field generated by the coil and prevents metal that may be behind the coil from heating up.

haha thats a pretty cool little mod.

Woah, Nice idea!
You should get it patented, lol.

If you connect it to a basic usb port, it is just like if you connected the charger using a usb cable, so I dont think it's gonna cause problems, until now, I haven't noticed any. the only drawback is that the charging is slower than on wall charger but that was expected.

You may encounter trouble because of the One's all-metal body. Your case will need to completely isolate the coil from the body for this to work, if memory serves me right. Admittedly, it is aluminum, so I'm not altogether certain it will be an issue.

I would really like to see something like this. A couple of challenges I think would be keeping the plug area on the bottom to as thin as possible and second would be to keep the case as thin and small as possible.
I wish you luck!

Post pics of it on the phone and let us know what kind of charger your using. It looks like you could rip off that coil and place it in any case if it's thin .
Definitely report on results. I tried to make something like this for my One XL, and while it worked as far as charging went, it was unpredictable and seemed to make the phone unstable, though I could never figure out why. I suspect it's not just the charging current but that the phone's charging circuits and drivers need to be tuned for wireless.

you need the Type b for the HTC One, it seems to work but as it's only 500mA at 5V the charging is
going to be fairly slow
It is very slim and unnoticeable behind a tpu case, the connected usb does not stick out that far either
(about 3mm)
As it came from China it took awhile to arrive but the price is right

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'd not seen that, but it looks like just what I'd like to try and fit between my phone and case. The lack of wireless charging was the biggest reason I held off switching from my DNA to the One. I love the convenience of just plopping my phone on the orb charger during the day. any idea how to use these universal receivers on my THL W8S?

this may not sound like the most logical idea, but isn't it possible to somehow use NFC for wireless charging, since NFC is about near field communication after all?

Nfc doesn't connect to the battery of the phone and the coil is not inductive as it is a derivative of close range rfid
A quick tip for the add on qi pads with the HTC one, as the USB is not in the middle you can't position the pad straight up or the curved back makes it hard to get a connection. Put it on a bit of a diagonal so the pad is in the centre of the back

Nexus 5 magnetic docking

We can see from the back panel of the Nexus 5 that there are 4 metal plates arranged around the Qi charging coil, and almost identical arrangement to the famous Palm Pre and it's touchstone wireless charger.

Previously, the explanation why the Nexus 4 did not include magnetic docking (as it was reported to have in the original Verge hand-on video reveal) was that there were patent issues involved. Either Google (or LG) have acquired the necessary patent(s) for magnetic docking for wireless charging, or the metal plates are there purely for hackers to add magnetic docking themselves (as many have done with the Nexus 4 by taking donor parts from the Pre).
I suspect the former. Without a flat glass back, the adhesive attachment mechanism of the current wireless charging orb will not function with the Nexus 5's soft-touch (and possibly slightly curved) back, so a new wireless charger will be required for the Nexus 5 with a new retention mechanism.
Very interesting...
Wonder if any patent-wonks out there can shed any light on whether Google or LG hold any patent cover for this (I remember the - old - N7 had a magnetic switch such that the screen would turn off / on depending on whether a case with a magnet was open / closed - I remember there being a bit of discussion as to whether they had patent cover for this)
I hope this also means that there might be an actual working dock feature when using qi

LG bought a lot of stuff related to webOS from HP earlier this year:
http://money.cnn.com/2013/02/25/technology/hp-sells-webos-lg/index.html
LG is buying all of the assets associated with webOS: the source code, engineering talent, patents, and more. It plans to use the software in its smart TVs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, though a press release said neither company expects the deal "to have a material impact" on its financials.

very interesting! do you think that a magnetic dock (with strong magnets) would be enough even for a car dock?
i'd love to have a wireless charging dock for my car but i hate universal docks and i've never seen model specific wireless charging car docks. hacking a universal dock to hold in place the phone just using magnets would be awesome imo!

No. Additional coils will not provide any increase the charging speed.
The purpose of overlapping multi-coil chargers is to make positioning easier; with a single coil, you must place your devices coil right over it in order for efficient charging (i.e. more energy being picked up correctly by the reception coil to power the device rather wasted as heat). With multiple coils, you can place your device on the mat and have a reasonable chance that the device will already be right over a coil. One Panasonic charger also solves this by motorising a single coil, which moves directly under the charging coil of the device after you place it on the mat.

I have no experience with wireless charging. How does this work with a case? Does the case have to support wireless charging or is the signal strong enough to pass through the case? Confused.

Unless it's an extremely thick case (like a full centimeter or more) it should not have any affect. You will want to avoid metal cases though. Some types of metals will dramatically interfere with it.

I'm using my N5 on an N4 charging orb right this minute and it works great. In fact, the soft touch material grips better than the N4 did (some people had issues with their N4 sliding off).
I'm holding out for the official dock which uses the magnets. Same day launch as the N5 was a load of bull, though!

I want to mount it inside my car mount to get wireless charging whiled docked.

I am using the T200 wireless charger. It is very small and It is working flawless with my Nexus 5. Also it still power the phone after the battery is full like an directly connected USB charger.

How about some thing like this? If you get a QI charger that has a battery pack built in you would not need to have the charger plugged into your car all the time and have to see ugly wires. Plus you can also charger your friends phones at the same time if they need. How do you plan on adding the wireless charger to your car dock? Seams like a fun project, good luck. Keep us updated.

The LuguLake is too wide to fit. Thanks tho.
I have a Proclip adjustable mount that has some space between the back of the phone and the front of the plate. All I am planning on doing is finding something that will fit in that space, double side sticky tape it and plug my existing (hidden) usb cable in to it. Nothing too fancy. Realistically, the only thing it gives me is the ability to slide my phone into the mount and get juice without having to go through all the trouble of plugging in the usb cable (joking, it's not saving me more than 3 seconds, but gives me bonus geek points).

If the specifications are accurate the T200 puts out 7.5W (5v x 1.5amp) whereas the WGP-300 puts out 5W (5v x 1amp).
I have no idea how that translates real world though. :silly:

Just got this

Well it works. It sets just perfectly for a charge. A little bit of double sided sticky tape and good to go.

Is that the T200?
Dunno, it was just some generic qi puck I bought off of eBay.

anybody tried a palm pre charger? its dirt cheap on amazon. interested in it just because of the price, but not sure if itll work though.

Looking for the perfect Qi auto Charger

Hallo everyone,
I just bought a Nexus 5 and I'm looking for a specific Qi Charger for my Automobile. I'm looking ONLY for a model that could be connected at the cigarette lighter receptacle, something like this one but with the Qi funktion. It would be perfect for me, someone knows where I could buy it?
I just made a Fotomontage und this is how it could be the look of the Qi charger that I got in my mind (of course with a Nexus 5 instead of the iPhone).

It's possible that it doens't exist a product like this?
There doesn't seem to be any kind of back to the cradle so can't even see if it's possible to make something for the coil. Would be brilliant if you could...similar to what I've been looking for.
Sadly I'm not an electro freak and I can't build it
I'm wondering how It could be possible that this product doens't exist in the whole planet...maybe are we wrong and someone knows one?

Maybe get an official Nexus 5 charger and a lighter outlet plug and fix something up with that. Since it has magnets in it, it should hold the phone in place pretty well.

I would suggest the official nexus Qi charger since it has adhesive capabilities so the phone does not slide off while driving....then find a usb cigarette lighter adapter to connect the charger to and you should be set. The nexus 4 charger has an adhesive surface and the nexus 5 charger has a magnetic surface to keep the phone secured to the phone.
I have not tried this...so use at your own risk but should work.
Something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7iIf6VkFXM
The nexus charger magnets don't seem to work with cases from what I've seen. I'm considering getting this dock and then attached the AirDock to the end. Bit pricey but should work well.
The solution i have came up with may or may not work for you since cars all have different interior setups.
So my set up consists of
-Nexus Wireless Charger
-Kenu Airframe Vent Mount
-Cigarette charger / micro usb cable
This works perfectly and not permanent in case you don't want adhesive disk on your dash or a suction cup on your windshield and have to reach for it.
Mount the well.. mount on your AC vent and then use that to hold the charger and run the cable from it to the cigarette lighter port and viola.
So far I've been driving with this for two days, using it as a GPS via Google Maps. Driving thru bad highways and still holding on strong.. Phone needs to be naked though.
Sorry.. I don't know how to post pics.. first time posting..
How about this? http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/LG-Car-M...LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e8d32a5ea&_uhb=1
I've been using the Qi unit WCP-300 for quite some time (since Nexus 4). Stable and solidly built.
Haturaya, those products got always a usb cabel, i don't wont a cable all over my cockpit, that's why a solution like this one would be perfect, with a Qi charger instead of a USB connector.
I was interested in this model, but isn't compatible with the Nexus 5 'cause this one got the USB Connector inverted...
F**k!
At the end I just gave up the reserch of this perfect Qi charger and I bought this one (modified in the order to fit the big dimension of the Nexus 5)
I hope to see in the future this same model but with Qi charger, I would buy it immediatly.
shouldn't need the clamps its got magnetic mounts on the back. I want one of those

How sturdy is the cable? Does it wobble around when the phones in there?

The clamp is there 'cause I broke the support in order to fit the Nexus 5 dimension.

It woobles a little bit, but I could say that it's enought stable to use the phone without problems.
I want a magnetically held up one.

Do you have one? I'm tempted to get one with this mount, but I've heard mixed reviews about how it holds phones in cases.

I have one. It works great, without a case. Can't say how it works with a case but it is sticky and they include magnetic stickers that you can use to make anything stick to the mount. I use one of those with my wife's Galaxy Nexus (only as a mount, not a charger in that case.)

[DIY] High Current Micro USB Charging Cable From Cheap China Cable

WHY
I use Waze on my N5 every day during my commute to and from work. I find that the only micro USB cable I have that can still charge my N5 while running Waze is the OEM LG cable that came with it. I don't like the current state of affairs - where I'm reliant on just one cable with no backups.
WHAT
I've tried the regular 'Genuine' micro USB cables from China via Ebay that purport to handle Galaxy Note level charging, as well as 24/28 AWG cables that are supposed to handle increased currents. No joy.
NEED
- Pocket Knife
- Soldering iron + associated materials
- Electrical tape
HOW
I used a cheap, China, Ebay, micro USB cable that has a hard plastic casing around the connectors on either end of the cable; this makes it easier to pop the casing off, fiddle with the wires, and close everything up again.

(1) You begin by using a pocket knife to pop open the casings around both the USB A male and micro USB male connectors. Do this by firmly putting pressure via the blade edge on the seam between the casing halves. Once the blade has sunk about .5mm into the seam you then wiggle it to widen the gap. It may help to increase pressure on the seam by hinging the metal connector against the plastic (as if it was plugged in and someone decided to sit on the plastic). You'll see this when successful.
(2) Next, you take your soldering iron and move the green wire over to join the black wire, and the white wire over to join the red wire; on both connectors.
(3) Add a bit of a jumper between the D+ and D- connections on the micro USB connector (where the White and Green wires used to be) You'll see this when done.
(4) Finally, put the plastic connector covers back on and cleanly wrap them with some electrical tape.
Seems easier to just buy a reputable cable at a modest price. Amazon basics has fine offerings. I'm able to run waze and Pandora while driving and still get a charge. Its mostly going to be contingent on the car charger, not the cable.
I tried just getting a proper cable - ended up with a bunch of cables that couldn't cut the mustard. Thus, I took the lemons I had and made lemonade. The cable I made is also independent of whether the charger shorts the D+ & D- pins together; which lets your phone know if it can pull full amps or not.
You can also make your cable with 25AWG
You can try to buy a pisen cable, you can read my review here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ro-usb-cable-improving-charging-time-t3068562
It s cheap and made of good materials... I sold 20 of them to my customers and everyone confirmed a great improvement over the original cables ( I m a computer technician) and the difference with the original one from nexus 5 is great
I made a similar cable once, out of 2 thick wires ( can´t remember the AWG size though but this wire was used for 230V connection so it had at least a diameter of 1+ mm ) and had similar results.
The lower resistance on this cable can actually help a lot but you need a power supply which can deliver a higher current too in order to benefit from it.
I see one benefit though, in comparison to a really cheap cable with thin wires and crimped contacts, the DIY one is more reliable ( though it looks horrible )
Just got my Charger Doctor USB volt/current meter today. Attached are pictures of the current going into my N5 via the OEM cable (1.16A), unmodified China cable (0.36A), and modified China cable (0.68A).
The mod is a definite improvement - but still not even close to what the stock cable can do. Looks like the wires in the China cable are seriously undersized.
My next step will have to be using two proper gauge wires as mentioned above by Gorgtech to finally achieve OEM cable throughput.
Here are some pictures of my DIY cable
Not very pretty but functional
Looks good to me! I think I'm going to source some speaker wire for my next one.

I'm happy that I found this thread and the other ideas in the replies though in just wondering, where you have the jumper how would this apply to the micro USB pinout with 1+2 on the top and 3+4+5 on the bottom, rather than all on the same plane.
As it turns out when I'd completed the USB A end and started on the other this was the case. Typical.
Thanks if any insight.
I'm currently using my power bank cable in the car which allows charging at a faster rate than discharge.
Thanks.

Excellent and very valid question! Reference the attached picture.
1 - connect to red & white wires
2 - jumper to 3
4 - not connected
5 - connect to black & green wires

Use 12 gauge...
Just for the fun of it, I measured the spare cable I have
The diameter is about 1.3 mm which corresponds AWG 16 if I´m right
Ofc you can use a even stronger cable if you want but keep in mind that the limiting factor will be the pins of the USB connectors itself, also from a physical side of view ( you cannot fit the strongest cable inside the case of the connectors, not even if you modify them. )
I used hot glue to keep the pins in place after I soldered my cable and used shrinking hose after :good:
Basically every strong wire should work ( eg. speaker cable ), just use whatever piece of junk you have laying around

Thanks very much for that, I shall give that a go over the weekend and report my findings.
Cheers.
I did it but my Nexus 5 is still not getting above 500 ma from a 1 amp charger.
I have another cable from old Nokia phone that gives me solid 1000ma.
That cable is hardly 8 inches. And is a usb cable not charging only cable.
I have notes that the wire strands in my usb cable are of aluminum.
What were yours?

I built mine using 20 gauge power supply cables
Will it cost damage to the battery?
I recovered one soldering microusb connector pins 1 and 5 to 220V cables, and shorting 2 and 3 on the opposite side, with great effort considering the small tabs.
Well, I still couldn't get higher than 650mA, to my surprised disappointment.
would 12 gauge be to big to work with ?
