I'm really looking forward to KITKAT..
Nobody knows when or even if KitKat will be released for this tablet. Samsung does not provide timelines, the only way we know is through leaks. There haven't been any to my knowledge.
I doubt we will get it since we didn't get 4.3. Last time I buy a Samsung tablet

I think you guys are being a bit melodramatic. You have a perfectly functional tablet that doesn't have any outwardly obvious bugs or other problems. I bet you use it with no problems. Sure, it's nice to have the latest update, but it's not like you have significantly outdated software that limits your usage of the tablet. And should 4.4 land on this tab (for the record, I think it will), you guys will be happy for all of about 5 minutes and move on with your day. And of course as soon as a new minor update drops, the *****fest will begin again.
I am running custom build 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of some UI tweaks and ART, it brings nothing significant to the table.

There are many reasons why HTC is failing, but if this is even a reason, it's an insignificant one. Samsung has never been truly up to date on updates, yet they are second only to Apple in the amount of high-end devices sold. Most people, myself included don't really care whether we are on the latest version. We just care that our devices perform well and do what we need them to do. I only complain if an update screws something up.
And lets be honest here: you are running the latest version of all of the Google Apps. It's not like you are stuck on Gingerbread and being on Jelly Bean does not limit you in any way. KitKat will not boost your battery life, will likely not make your device faster, and does not add any significant features that would make a difference in your usage of the device. So what's the real issue? Because it's not that you are unhappy with your tablet.

I wish that was the case but it's not. I'm on the AT&T variant, and I'm still on 4.1.2. I have screen freezes (real and documented) and battery life isn't great. With that said, I haven't piled on the *****fest. But no matter what, this device really needs to get upgraded. I blame AT&T more than Sammy, but there is no reason why I should still be on 4.1.2 with a device that was announced in June 2013 with absolutely no word on when we'll get an update (either to 4.2, 4.3, or KK). That's pretty shameful. And with no releases of any kinds of source code or device info, we have no unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs. So, I'm basically on 2013 hardware with 2012 code.

I fully understand your concern. I have the Wifi-only tab and am on 4.2. I did not experience your issues with 4.1 but I do know that others have. The thing is, problems have to get fixed, and it's a shame that you are still dealing with them. I don't know if it's AT&T or Samsung in your case that's at fault though. My point was more to the effect that I don't care for software updates just for the sake of having a slight bump in version number.

Agreed. I am on the At&t Note 8.0 variant also and I too have freezes and lag. With that being said I know that At&t and Samsung don't have the best business relationship dye At&t loyalty to Apple. So an update may or may not come. If it does let's hope that At&t don't block or rip it up like they do with all Samsung updates

I got wifi only and I get freezes. The way to unfreeze is to turn the orientation of the note to landscape from horizontal and vice versa. I really wish for an update to fix that. And Yes htc has tons of problems but I believe the slow ass updates were the biggest driver of their customers (at least those who root their devices) to Samsung. Those people are also quite influential with their peers on recommendations

While the update is still about 3 to 4 weeks away, I want to make sure certain issues that have previously risen, don't happen on the Glide.
Firstly, If you are unlocked & have CWM installed, do not try to flash the update without first preparing yourself & your device. Updates on devices that have incorrectly made CWM versions that cannot be not overwritten have & will cause issues from simple black screen all the way to emergency dload mode.
to use official updates you need to relock your device & be using a correctly keyed AT&T rom.
My advice to you is to wait for a final OTA to be released & rooted & then sideload the update. ICS will however require a new boot section & possibly radio.
Once I have time, I will write a tutorial based on both my Vivid & SGS2 update experiences.
Until then be happy that you now own the only ICS slider so far.

Does this mean,, the Unlocked (Network Unlock)) has to be restored back the NETWORK LOCKED mode.??
Will the initial unlock key work later also ??
will this issue be more dramatic for the Canadian, Rogers Glide (I927R)? When it comes to Rogers, they really don't announce if an Android device will get (or not) an update...

I can't update OTA the updte from ATT. After the package gets downloaded to my phone my phones reboots and then it cancels the update.

No, i bought it via wireless.amazon.com and shipped it to germany with borderlinx. All you need is a unlock code and everything works finde
I will release a rooted Version once it is released, so don't worry Canada & Germany! I love my Vivid, but the Glide has really surprised me with some of its nice media functions & overall responsiveness. It is also one of the few devices that will operate on the 5Ghz wireless-n band.
So far, only AT&T has announced plans for ICS on the Glide. Samsung told me the same.
As for lock & unlock, you always need to relock devices for OTA updates, but the one you are getting now is not ICS, just 2.3.6. I suggest skipping that one & waiting for the ICS build which will be here in roughly over 3-weeks. LTE devices are getting first run from AT&T.

Slight nitpick. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro has also been confirmed to be upgraded to ICS. Of course, its specs are somewhat worse than the Captivate Glide...
Just a question all this talk about ICS. Is ICS really that much better then Gingerbread. I mean I have seen the slick new interface but will it be better at handling opened apps and will battery life be better. I am just wondering if I should upgrade or since Gingerbread is working fine (If it ain't broke).

To me, being able to have a real in app spellchecker makes it more than worth updating. I hate typing emails on gingerbread because I am such a terrible speller. And I don't have time for all the copying and pasting from one app to another. Anyways hopes this helps.

In ICS Android itself makes better use of the hardware inside the phone. One of the big things in ICS is that Android itself starts using the GPU for graphics, where it used to pass that to the CPU. This means a far more optimised system overall, which should translate to better battery life.
Because the CPU has to do less to little of something it wasn't specifically built for. This should free the CPU up as the graphics load is now handled by the GPU. But it's unlikely that this freed up CPU-time will mean the CPU gets to sit there, idly. It will probably be used for something else. So that could mean that ICS uses the CPU equally to Gingerbread, and uses the GPU more than Gingerbread. This would mean a shorter battery life.
Going on the information I've got I'd say ICS will be a better system overall. But it still remains to be seen, time will really tell.

So we don't really know if battery life will be better or worse. I like that you mention that the GPU will be more efficiently used over gingerbread, but as you said only time will tell. Guess as always I will wait and see what others think of it once they install it and then see if I will upgrade. Thank you for your input.
Does anyone know if in the updates there will be vertical-landscape transitions? The lack of them on here makes me cringe! Is it Samsung enabled/can we reenable them?

At least a few months away, surely? Well, at least we're getting updates. Samsung is probably the least worst when it comes to OTA updates, in my experience at least.
I'm waiting for someone to port S4 camera and everything to Note. I can wait for the rest of the gimmicks
Yeah Samsung aren't too bad with updates especially considering just how much stuff they add to the aosp Android base. They add an awful lot of features and the updates may take time but they do come.

It's better to wait. Android 4.2.2 on the GS4 is very, very laggy in some situations (browser, gallery)
Lag is no big deal, custom ROMs should take care of the lag if not just the launcher - if that's the typical touchwiz lag we're talking about. Happy with 4.1.2 itself though, no rush.

Note II doesn't lag for me at all, it's extremely fluid (on Nova launcher).
CM 10.1, with android 4.2.2, runs absolutely fine on my Note 2. The rom is good enough for daily use. I don't think the SG4 is the right reference at this moment.

Unfortunately, seems that samsung is more interested to develop a system full of useless things (air view, s-health, smart stay and soooooo on) than a system that performs like pure google experience roms. I used a Nexus 4 for a couple of days and the smoothness was excellent, like iOS or WP. On Touchwiz roms even the messages app is laggy.
It's a shame that AOSP roms on the note 2 aren't so good (no s-pen support and, more important, worse battery life)
According few twitter friends (note the rumour tone) samsung must release a beta 4.2.2 in few weeks, and a full release soon before next Google IO (where we will saw Android 5 just to keep us dreaming again)

Beyond the "having the latest" there isn't a lot to add from 4.2. I mean, phones don't have the multi user (WTF Google!) and for the user it basically adds the notification buttons, which we already have, only now in a different page of notifications.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing to hope for the 4.2 in the Note is whatever Samsung adds to make it "suite".
Samsung fares much better than my previous phone manufacturer motorola in terms of updates.
When I bought the razr which supposedly is promised to be upgradable to ics... It was on gb out of the box. Took them 2 years to push out ics.
And even then it was so laggy even with a clean reboot with cache and everything wiped.
And the razr was their flagship phone.
Reason I left Motorola is its slow updates.

Also, why don't you switch to CM10.2 if you don't like what your on, or AOSP for that matter, as that runs better I personally think.

I cannot change too quickly. Mom allowed me only for CM 10.1, and now for CM 11(It will come, right?). Cannot do CM 10.2.
That kernel is not ready for primetime, also there is code that the chip maker will have to release code for it. See hash and others posting about it:

Google says that kitkat can run on devices that have as low as 512mb RAM. We can sure overclock our processor to 1.2 GHz

You know, hash doesn't say anything about not getting it to work. In my opinion he clearly stated that he is really trying to get 4.4 to work. It was others that were being sceptical.

As was previously stated, Texas Instruments is out of the microprocessor chip game and they have stopped supporting the binaries for newer versions of Android. It wasn't directly stated by Google but it's very likely that it was for that reason that they chose not to support the Galaxy Nexus in the newest iteration of Android, as it also uses a TI chip. I'd like to think that it would be possible to run Android 4.4 on the old Kindle Fire, especially since it lags pretty badly on stock, but I am afraid that the likelihood is fairly low.
True that it also what is written on hash's thread for the new kernel. He sure I trying hard and so my hopes are pretty much alive

They already have 4.4 Roms for the Verizon galaxy nexus...it won't get official Google support but they have gotten Roms for it:

As always, XDA is up to some good stuff with a new release of Android now available. Some developers are finding what appears to be updated binaries for the GPU that’s inside the Galaxy Nexus. KitKat was announced last week, and surprisingly, Google decided to drop support for the Galaxy Nexus. It’s surprising because KitKat can run on devices with 256MB of RAM, which the Galaxy Nexus has a full gigabyte of RAM available. We’ve already seen numerous custom ROMs flowing out for KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus. And it’s not just for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, but also the Verizon (Toro) and Sprint (Toroplus) versions.
It appears that Texas Instruments have updated the GPU binaries for the Galaxy Nexus. Now, Google may not have known that TI was going to update it or Google may not have told TI that they had given up on the two-year old device. But either way, developers are hard at work building an updated kernel that might help solve some of the graphical issues with KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus.
If you’re one of those many people out there still rocking the Galaxy Nexus, and not wanting to give it up just yet. It looks like you might get Christmas a bit early. As the new GPU binaries should definitely help out the Galaxy Nexus. Although, if you’ve held onto it this long, you’re probably due for an upgrade, since the device was released in November 2011. Hopefully this will help people get a long a bit more until the device finally chokes.
This is another reason why we love the developer community around Android. You won’t find a developer community like this behind the iPhone or anything iOS related. Back before I started here at AH, I had a couple of devices in which the manufacturer had given up on the device, but developers had continued to support it for years. Which was quite nice.

new drivers are for Jellybean and not for KitKat
Well, even if it's only for Jelly Bean, i would want that. An Update is better than no-update

I would prefer updated Jellybean with updated drivers and with no WiFi/GPS/connectivity issues... hope Google will release a more stable Jellybean

I was thinking same thing.
Even of they ARE only good for4.2/4.3 improvements, I'd love to see them incorporated
Even though Galaxy Nexus is no more officialy supported by Google and stuck at Android 4.3, KitKat Roms emerged quickly and evolve rapidly - thanks to our crazy devs!!! :victory: So how you all handling this? Still at 4.3... already jumped to a 4.4 rom?
I know it took a long way for 4.3 roms to reach that point where everything works near perfect and I think that Cataclysm or SlimBean are such examples. So, some will prefer the comfort of this instead of jumping into the unknown and start dealing with bugs and the trial and error procedure???
As I write this Android 4.4.2 is rolling to newer Nexus devices, my new Nexus 7 already running this and something tells me, since none of the factory images for 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 are officialy on google's page, that another update maybe coming soon. Since our phone is not officialy supported, devs will strugle merging new code to their sources and adapting it for gnex. How do you see this evolving?
To end this, it's been 2 years after the release of GNEX and our forum still is in the top 5 list. Quite impressive if you ask me. Tell that to Google... Galaxy Nexus is a legendary phone even though it's not the sharpest out there. And I am sure its "endurance" over time, will make it even more legendary!

It will continue, but the gnex population will gradually move on. The new incomers will not likely join at the rate the existing users leave to upgrade to a new device.
If it's any indication, Nexus One and Nexus S development are still continuing and they are older than the Galaxy Nexus. At some point when newer android versions get too resource intensive (KK tried to improve the memory management) then we will start seeing users preferring to stick with an older version.
I will continue with my Galaxy nexus and I'm still very happy with it especially so because of the talented developers here at XDA. I'm currently using the 4.4 KK rom : [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 11 for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with gapps 20131207. This ROM is now my daily driver and I won't be going back to 4.3 :good:

myself, I've been thinking of sticking with Cataclysm for a while. But can I ask those who already use a 4.4 rom if they noticed any signifcant improvement on battery life or multitasking?

I'm not one to sit by idly and wait for confirmation of a stable new Android version. When 4.4 was released I flashed it right away. Whats the fun in not "jumping into the unknown"?
I dont think small updates are that hard for developers to merge into our current builds. We are already on 4.4.1 and I'm sure that 4.4.2 will be on our devices soon as well.
KitKat has been running great on my device. I dont know of any issues we have now that havent been fixed yet.

Well...my GPS could be better. I'm seeing at best 30ft accuracy with about 8 satellites locked in with pretty low SNR values.
Im still on 4.3, Slimbean. Waiting for Slimkat to evolve just a litle bit more :good:

I haven't had any issues with GPS. It pinpoints pretty fast for me.
And by the way, cyanogenmod just updated us to 4.4.2.
I will be continuing to use my Galaxy Nexus until the 'Nexus 6', it can totally hold up to most of the competition. Currently using the last 4.4.1 Galaxy Nexus Maguro CM11 ROM with ASKP/Franco/Mpokang/Fancy/Stock kernel.
