[Q] HTC 1 Mini WILL NOT INSTALL BUSYBOX - Verizon HTC One (M7)

HTC One Mini - AT&T
Tried installing Busybox from GooglePlay .apk, FAILED.
Now what?
I'm guessing I have root, not sure how to be completely sure.
Unlocked fastboot, flashed recovery w/ orange, installed SU from .zip
Gave BB SU permission.
FAILED.
Now what? I need BB. Tried looking for flashable .zip to flash from orange, but can't find any DL's.
S = ON :/
I have no idea where to begin fixing this issue...

On a side note...
Still can't find flashable .zip BB version.
Tried using Jrummy BB installer w/ root, still crashes.
Someone help before I manually brick this POS... i.e. throw it at a brick wall....

I just did a search on Google it said you need an app called busy box installer from the playstore

.APK Method/Apps DO NOT WORK.

They do not work. Both of these:
google*com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
google*com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer
(Official GooglePlay Online Store)
...either crash/reboot during "Advanced/smart" install, or fail using "Normal" install.
I need to to turn "S" off to enable write to nand possibly?
Tried both /xbin/ and /bin/ install directory through .apk
Also tried both Advanced & Normal install on both apps...
OP Specifically says .apk method = FAIL....
Next answer please, lol

Also....
I also verified root, it's there. Both .apk's (Apps) had SU privelage.
Even restarted the apps to make sure they had SU right from the beginning of their loading.
So to summarize:
AT&T HTC One mini
- fastboot : UNLOCKED
- recovery flashed : recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.6-m4.img
- gained root : ClockWorkMod loaded "root.zip" (.zip courtesy root-wiki)
- DL'ed BusyBox .apk's : TWO FAILURES.
- And here I am....
Android version : 4.2.2

This needs to be in proper section. This is the HTC One Verizon section. Not mini.

I know this is the wrong forum, but im gonna help a guy out anyways.
Does the mini have ext4 formating for system and cache partitions? If so flash this https://www.dropbox.com/s/losui4x6nkt47nx/busybox_recovery_flashable.zip

DL'ed your .zip, but i'm waiting to figure out if my Mini has this "ext4" formating.
I don't know how to check if it does, and I don't want to flash something w/o knowing more.
I know ext4 is the newest? linux file structure, but I'm not sure if my Mini is formatted to it....
Anybody know how to check this?
The Mini when hooked up to a PC is recognizable as an external storage device,
so doesn't that mean its FAT or NTFS if windows can recognize it? Right?
Windows won't automatically recognize ext4 w/o installing something right?
If you have to alter or change your phone to ext4, then mine is not. I have never formatted my phone.
How can I check if this is safe for my phone?
I plan on using ClockworkMod to install this through the GUI.
What exactly is this "recovery-flashable-busybox"?
Does it get flashed over top of my recovery partition?
If so, does that mean I will lose my clockworkmod recovery?
Somehow with no idea what I was doing, I managed to unlock fastboot, and get SU.
Now I'm thinking I have no real idea of how this all works......
I would feel more comfortable installing BusyBox using an .APK because I'm a n00b
at this with an expensive toy that i don't want to break.... Like I mentioned before, would
turning S "off", would that allow me to use an .APK to install BusyBox? Or did my two .APK
installations I attempted before fail bc my internal "emulated" SD card is not formatted to
"ext3/4"? I'm lost now...
I guess in summary I need to know WHY I can't install busybox via GooglePlay .APK's,
and is this .zip safe for me to use, and if it is, how would I even use it?

It seems like the more answers I get, the more complications and questions I have...
How would I message or get help from somebody "high up" on this forum, somebody that knows all the in and outs?
I'm not gunna lie, I need a "babysitter" for this....
All I want to do is install Busybox, and after that I'm good, I don't need to play around with the "sensitive internals" of my phone.
I don't want any special roms, or anything else special. I just want SU privelages, and busybox installed.
Soooo.... how do I find a babysitter lol....

Also, I forgot to ask, did you mean can my phone "READ" ext3/4, or did you mean is my device "FORMATTED" to ext3/4
Neither of which do I know how to check or verify, but it would at least tell me what to do next i guess....

I think I'm may be on to something... The Util's known as "BusyBox", are a bunch of basic/necessary/commonly.used Linux commands wrapped up in a package, correct? So if they are Linux commands, then they probably have to be written to a Linux formatted partition? Correct? And if they are Linux commands, on a Linux partition, then that means my phone must be able to "speak" Linux? Correct?
So essentially I need to create an ext3/4 partition, and then write/install BusyBox to that partition?
Is my assumption correct?
Now another assumption is that the .APK's I want to use, which require these Linux commands, act as an interpreter to translate these Linux commands for my phone? Essentially, my phone does not need to speak Linux bc the .APK's know how to use the Linux commands "automatically" or "within themselves" so to speak?

All you need to do is flash it thru recovery. If your phones partitions are not formated ext4, the install will fail before anything is ever changed.
To find out how there fornated type mount into a terminal emulator, or at an adb shell. Look for lines with /system and /cache. In those same lines it will say ext4, ext3, etc. If there not ext4 tell me, and i will edit the flashable with the correct partitions.
All this zip does is install the busybox binary file to /system/xbin, and then make the appropirate symlinks.
Yes i reccomend getting s-off. The reason the apk wont work is because your s-on and have a secured boot.img
Busybox is a bunch of linux commands rolled into one. Your phone is already linux, but busybox puts all these commands in one place, and adds some additiinal commands not native to the phone.

Your partitions are most likely ext4 as the regular one is. Are you sure you have an unsecured boot img installed. Pretty sure busy box won't work without one. If you are not s off flashing a rom will not change the boot img. You will have to extract the image and flash via fastboot manually.

[Q] DHD android most beginner know how

Finally I got my DHD, the time where everything is rolling out, from perm root, to recovery...
The good thing, I'm very happy with my DHD, the bad thing, I'm not familiar yet with android system.
I revised a lot of android and DHD threads, and I faced many new terminologies that belong to android where I like to have explanation for each.
Please let me understand the following issues the beginner way, allowing me to maybe make a simple guide answers for most new android users coming from winmo.
I-General questions:
1-DHD should be multitouch. Then why games like Gameloft are not multitouch like on ipod or iphone?
2-What are the buttons combinations for the different operations like hard reset & boot loader?
3-I read that android can’t share internet via USB for those with no WIFI at home or office. As I knew it’s due to ad hoc issue so it's impossible to get internet via USB cable from desktop. When I plugged my DHD, I choose internet pass through and I got internet on my DHD, is it a new feature implemented in DHD only, or is it a 2.2 update that will work on other devices?
4-Winmo gives the choice to install applications on either the device or SD card. Android have nothing like this, so when I install applications, where do they go, and is there a workaround to put everything on SD card, or maybe give choice to where to install?
5-My DHD comes with an 8 GB mini SD card where there are some folders and files on it. Are they necessary to run the system, what if I replaced this card with another formatted one, what will happen, or what if I format this card?
II-System info:
1-Baseband version (is it like the radio in winmo?)
2-Kernel version (is it one kernel for the entire device? Does it updates like rom or like radio?) e.g. (kAmMa's OC&GOV&BFS Kernel - Performance and Stability. Is this a rom or just kernel that will update some parts of the rom without losing data on the device?)
3-Build number (is this the firmware?) e.g. (i have 1.32.405.3 CLxxxxxx release-keys, what does release keys means?)
4-Software number (or this is the firmware?)
III-OTA ACE with radio:
1-OTA (is it a rom, does it mean over the air, if yes what does that mean? Can we update OTA with no root?)
2-ACE
On winmo (HD2), I know HSPL will let me unlock ISPL so I can install any custom or cooked rom, languages and applications...
For android, as far as I know there is no one click solution. From what I understand to do everything in android with no restrictions u need to do the followings:
IV-How to root Desire HD install h-boot (S-Off) and Clockwork recovery?
Please identify which one is just a process that we do it once in order to unlock it, which is a boot loader run application and which one is an android application:
1-Root (is it what gives access to the root folders of the system that maybe are hidden by default or encrypted?)
2-Hboot
3-S-off (is it security off? if yes, it is security off for what? installing applications, or read write to some encrypted partitions?)
4-Clockwork (is it something necessary to do in order to install custom rom, no adds, backup and so on, or is it something totally independent and related only to unlock the speed of the CPU where you can leave it intact if you won’t play with the CPU speed?)
5-Recovery (from what I understand it seems that recovery is a system shell command like dos or more like bios for android but named as recovery, what can we do with the recovery other than recovering the device?)
6-Recovery image (is it a rom backed on the form of image and provided by developers, so we can install it directly on the device using only the recovery shell?)
V-More things to know about:
1-What is adb?
2-What is busybox?
2-What is fast boot?
3-What is eMMC write?
4-What is ext2 or ext4 (is it like the partition type of the SD card based on UNIX system? if yes, why should we change or modify this ext)
5-Rom manager (is it a desktop pc application or android device application? is it something like I can put the RUU file of the rom on my SD card and using the rom manager I can install the rom from there, nothing more nothing less?)

That is a ridiculous amount of questions, and the thread is in completely the wrong area of the forum. I'm sure you'd find the answer to pretty much all your questions if you looked hard enough, but to answer the one about multi-touch. It is multi touch and all the games I've played from your example 'Gameloft' are multi-touch, so I don't know what you're smoking buddy, but ease off.
1. Inb4 "search".
2. Wrong forum.
3. No really, try searching. At least 30% of that is googleable.

Ok guys, thank you all for your replies, and yes I knew that a war and flames will go on here, but seriously if you think this is ridiculous or newbie or most dumb questions, do not turn the way of the thread or flame me, my intentions are to make this as a one small guide for most new androids functions, it's not a bad thing to do, in fact I will learn as much as other new users here, no one is asked to answer all those ridiculous questions, just answer what you know about, guys please take it seriously and easy, saying look harder will not help the thread, it may help me personaly, but be sure that I did a lot of search, and it will not hurt to put everything in one place, and as you can see, I answered most of the questions up to what I gathered, you can correct me about my answers, put your thoughts or not answer at all, but please be constructive here, and if you all think that i'm in the wrong forum, or asking too much, or asking ridiculous questions, please moderator feel free to do what you think is better for the forum.
Sorry guys for bothering you. Thank you for your response.
N.B.: just to be more accurate, I tried the prince of persia pre installed on the phone by the dealer, and it was not multi touch, so you cant walk and use any of the right actions at same time.
@vuedesprit: Good thread, and thanks for taking all the criticism from the more experienced users.
@all chimers chiming the "use search, wrong forum" tune: c'mon guys, there's at least 2 of us reading this thread going, it's about time all this information got consolidated into one place! The easier it is to find this information, the easier it would be for more of us to get engaged in the process and thus further development, enhancement and adoption.
While our "friendly" mod is doing his best to keep the forums clean, they're as fragmented as ever and from time-to-time, it becomes necessary to consolidate the information into a single thread. I'm sure most of you started some place too and remember the time not so long ago when it was difficult to find even the most basic info? I think by sharing your knowledge, you will gain a much better following and the platform will gain much better adoption.
My 2 cents worth anyways...I've had my DHD for 3 days now and I too am struggling to perform even the most basic tasks.
We really need a questions and answers sub forum
Fair enough, maybe my first comment was a bit rash, but I didn't mean to appear rude. I shall try to answer some questions here:
GENERAL.
1. From my own experience all games advertised as multitouch are exactly that. I don't know about the version of PoP that you have installed from carrier, but I do find that odd.
2. Hard reset is a little perverse with the new "fastboot" hibernation feature that HTC have implemented. You have to go to MENU>SETTINGS>APPLICATIONS and disable "fastboot" (this is where confusion may arise as this is not the bootloader fastboot that allows images to be flashed)!! Now when you hold down the power button and get the option to power off, you will properly power off the phone. Next if you hold "VOLUME DOWN" and "POWER" buttons you will reboot into HBoot, from here the VOLUME UP/DOWN keys navigate the menu and POWER selects menu options.
3. Not sure about this one.
4. Since the release of FROYO you can go to MENU>SETTINGS>APPLICATIONS>MANAGE APPLICATIONS then select any app and move to either SD or to phone memory.
5. The folders on the SD card are mostly generated by the phone when you first insert it. The user guide and HTC sync software are there to move onto your PC for safe keeping. If you insert a freshly formatted SD card, the phone will make fresh folders such as DCIM for pictures, etc...
SYSTEM INFO.
1. Baseband is radio software.
2. Kernel is the linux kernel that is running below Android, this can be updated separately from the main ROM, radio etc. HOWEVER CAUTION IS ADVISED AS CERTAIN KERNELS WILL NEED NEW MODULES FOR HARDWARE TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY as you will see from the wifi modules bundled with the OC kernels.
3. Build number pertains to HTC's internal software version classification (some are built specific for carriers) they are generally released via RUU (ROM Update Utility aimed at windows) or OTA (Over The Air update received on phone [again sometimes carrier specific]). Release keys pertains to the fact that the firmware has been signed by HTC (I think).
4. Software number, basically as above.
OTA ACE with Radio.
1. As Above.
2. ACE: internal HTC name for Desire HD (also reportedly known as "SPADE")
ROOT DESIRE HD ETC.
Most of what you have written is pretty much correct.
MORE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT.
1. http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
2. http://www.busybox.net/about.html
3. http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Fastboot
4. eMMC write basically means that you can write to the internal phone (normally protected) memory such as /SYSTEM, this is what S-OFF allows you to do whenever you want. However, the modules that allow the ENG HBoot image to be flashed are what really accomplish this in the first place so theoretically you could just run that module every time you wanted to write to /SYSTEM but that would become very tedious very quickly. I can't really explain further, as I don't have the knowledge.
5. EXT2 or EXT4 are filesystem structures just like FAT, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HFS+ etc, EXT4 is newer and more advanced than EXT2 and therefore is more efficient. (kinda general but you get the idea. NEWER=BETTER)
6. ROM manager, find this in the android market, it is free, you install it on your phone and with the addition of clockworkmod it gives you the ability of flashing ROMs etc. USE WITH CAUTION.
I hope that this answers or clarifies most of what you have asked or said, please feel free to cut and paste any of this info into your first post so that we can actually consolidate this.
P.S. I too am a complete android noob and this is my first android phone, I have picked this info up mainly from this forum so all credit for information goes to XDA-DEVELOPERS.COM and not me.
Cheers,
Dok

1-DHD should be multitouch. Then why games like Gameloft are not multitouch like on ipod or iphone?
Click to collapse
an application must support multitouch and other gestures. eg, opera doesnt support multitouch (ie you cant zoom in and out) but the browser that comes with the DHD does.
2-What are the buttons combinations for the different operations like hard reset & boot loader?
Click to collapse
boot loader = turn phone off. then, volume down + power on.
4-Winmo gives the choice to install applications on either the device or SD card. Android have nothing like this, so when I install applications, where do they go, and is there a workaround to put everything on SD card, or maybe give choice to where to install?

application must support running from /sdcard. When you install an app go to settings -> Applications -> manage applications. From here you can uninstall or move apps to the sdcard. Bear in mind if you have not rooted your phone you may not be able to uninstall some apps (eg amazon reader).
5-My DHD comes with an 8 GB mini SD card where there are some folders and files on it. Are they necessary to run the system, what if I replaced this card with another formatted one, what will happen, or what if I format this card?

some application data is stored on your sdcard, and apps are stored here if you have moved them by using the steps above. if you change sd cards this info is unavailable to the app but the app should still work. any settings you had need to be redone.
2-Kernel version (is it one kernel for the entire device? Does it updates like rom or like radio?) e.g. (kAmMa's OC&GOV&BFS Kernel - Performance and Stability. Is this a rom or just kernel that will update some parts of the rom without losing data on the device?)
Click to collapse
the kernel is not part of a rom or the radio. It is stored in the boot partition in the emmc (where fastboot(aka hboot)/splash images/boot(kernel)/recovery/ are all stored). It is generally included with but not required by a custom rom. ie, a custom rom builder may choose to include a specific kernel with his rom but it is not mandatory.
1-OTA (is it a rom, does it mean over the air, if yes what does that mean? Can we update OTA with no root?)
Click to collapse
yes, you can do OTA HTC updates. but, there are no custom (non signed) updates delivered OTA. An unrooted rom will not be able to flash non signed updates (or roms).

Please identify which one is just a process that we do it once in order to unlock it, which is a boot loader run application and which one is an android application:
1-Root (is it what gives access to the root folders of the system that maybe are hidden by default or encrypted?)

android application. eg, visionary+.
2-Hboot

hboot is also known as bootloader. it is the white screen with the skating androids when you do the volume-down + power combination when switching on your phone.
3-S-off (is it security off? if yes, it is security off for what? installing applications, or read write to some encrypted partitions?)
Click to collapse
s-off stands for security off. you can check the status by doing the volume-down + power combo. At the top it will either say s-on or s-off. If you have s-on then your bootloader (hboot), boot (kernel) /system (android) and recovery (eg clockworkmod) partitions are all read only.
4-Clockwork (is it something necessary to do in order to install custom rom, no adds, backup and so on, or is it something totally independent and related only to unlock the speed of the CPU where you can leave it intact if you won’t play with the CPU speed?)
Click to collapse
clock work is the recovery partition. you have 3 possible options before loading android when you do the volume-down + power on combo. hboot, then either fastboot or recovery. fastboot and recovery are both ways to flash images to your phone although through different ways (fastboot uses the fastboot command on your pc to send the image, recovery uses .zip's on your /sdcard). clockworkmod is a custom recovery image which you need to flash after achieving s-off. it's also where nandroid backups can be done. if you select recovery before doing this you will get the phone + red triangle icon. thats the stock recovery. the clockworkmod is the green menu selection one.
5-Recovery (from what I understand it seems that recovery is a system shell command like dos or more like bios for android but named as recovery, what can we do with the recovery other than recovering the device?)

clockwork mod can backup your phone's partitions (boot/userdata/system) so that if you mess up installing a rom you have a way to recover. this is known as a nandroid backup.

adb is android debug something. It is a way to send commands to the android operation system from your pc (either windows or linux). eg, you can run a single command, or run a shell (terminal session). it is part of the android sdk under tools.
2-What is busybox?
Click to collapse
busybox is a single executable whihc runs under the android OS that provides standard linux commands (eg, ls, rm, cd) to any application. it is so that a script writer does not need to know the partiticular rom you have and then cater for it, but only that you have a certain version of busybox. eg, busybox 1.17.1 provides the same commands whether it is on a leedroid rom or a cyanogen rom.
2-What is fast boot?
Click to collapse
fastboot is a way to flash images to your phone. it is accessed via hboot. you need the fastboot exe from the htc developer site. it can flash the boot (kernel), recovery (eg clockworkmod) and the radio (i think).
3-What is eMMC write?
Click to collapse
the emmc is the storage device which holds hboot, fastboot, recovery, /system, /userdata and (not sure about this one) radio. when you switch on your phone the emmc is read-only due to the s-on flag being set by hboot. you need to flash the engineering hboot which does not set s-on when you switch your phone on.
4-What is ext2 or ext4 (is it like the partition type of the SD card based on UNIX system? if yes, why should we change or modify this ext)

ext2 and ext4 are linux file system types. eg, windows is ntfs, linux has ext2/3/4 and others.
5-Rom manager (is it a desktop pc application or android device application? is it something like I can put the RUU file of the rom on my SD card and using the rom manager I can install the rom from there, nothing more nothing less?)

rom manager is an android app available on the market place to help with the flashing process. it can flash recovery partitions (as long as your phone is s-off), make nandroid backups (as long as you have clockworkmod & s-off). it can also flash custom roms. it does not flash these from within the android OS (afaik) but it will reboot into (not sure on this one) the recovery partition and leaves it instructions to flash a particular rom.
This thread is amazing!!
We had a lot threads like this in the HTC Blackstone Board of pocketpc.ch....
Hope to get more threads like this in every device category....
Thumbs up
Perhaps Threadstarter can write the answers in the first post...??

an application must support multitouch and other gestures. eg, opera doesnt support multitouch (ie you cant zoom in and out) but the browser that comes with the DHD does.
boot loader = turn phone off. then, volume down + power on.
application must support running from /sdcard. When you install an app go to settings -> Applications -> manage applications. From here you can uninstall or move apps to the sdcard. Bear in mind if you have not rooted your phone you may not be able to uninstall some apps (eg amazon reader).
some application data is stored on your sdcard, and apps are stored here if you have moved them by using the steps above. if you change sd cards this info is unavailable to the app but the app should still work. any settings you had need to be redone.
the kernel is not part of a rom or the radio. It is stored in the boot partition in the emmc (where fastboot(aka hboot)/splash images/boot(kernel)/recovery/ are all stored). It is generally included with but not required by a custom rom. ie, a custom rom builder may choose to include a specific kernel with his rom but it is not mandatory.
yes, you can do OTA HTC updates. but, there are no custom (non signed) updates delivered OTA. An unrooted rom will not be able to flash non signed updates (or roms).
there is a good thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
android application. eg, visionary+.
hboot is also known as bootloader. it is the white screen with the skating androids when you do the volume-down + power combination when switching on your phone.
s-off stands for security off. you can check the status by doing the volume-down + power combo. At the top it will either say s-on or s-off. If you have s-on then your bootloader (hboot), boot (kernel) /system (android) and recovery (eg clockworkmod) partitions are all read only.
clock work is the recovery partition. you have 3 possible options before loading android when you do the volume-down + power on combo. hboot, then either fastboot or recovery. fastboot and recovery are both ways to flash images to your phone although through different ways (fastboot uses the fastboot command on your pc to send the image, recovery uses .zip's on your /sdcard). clockworkmod is a custom recovery image which you need to flash after achieving s-off. it's also where nandroid backups can be done. if you select recovery before doing this you will get the phone + red triangle icon. thats the stock recovery. the clockworkmod is the green menu selection one.
see above.
clockwork mod can backup your phone's partitions (boot/userdata/system) so that if you mess up installing a rom you have a way to recover. this is known as a nandroid backup.

[Guide] preparation guide to running Ubuntu/debian on desire z

Ok , I know there is thread about debian running fine on desire z but the tutorial there is highly unfriendly and there are some other stuff you need to do to your desire z. This is my first guide. The reason for posting in dev thread is because chroot and loop requires specific kernel support to power Ubuntu.
Just to explain certain terms here...
Kernel - the interface for android to access hardware. Note that andorid is stripped down version of ubuntu and it does not have loopdevice support
Loopdevice - Imagine virtual disk mount program such as Daemon tools. This requires specifically supported kernels such
Following tutorial will void your warrenty (root and s off) but you can change to warrenty friendly state of course XD Check out xda wiki for more info( study to know what you are doing there.)
There are plenty of guides to get su and busybox( allows android system to be able to utilise more advanced commands) so check out comprehensive guides for g2 and desirez in this wiki below is my version
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your phone is stock, do a lot of research before doing root and s off. cyanogenmod has good guide on wiki for you to s off and get permanet root. Just for you to know, s off is to disable security for us to flash new kernel with loopback support and root is well... needed for most of hacks in XDA XD
*note for noobs: this is tested with desire z but G2 should not have problems. just be careful of which device's gfree you are using to s off.
ENGINEERING HBOOT IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS AND IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOU TO DO SO AS IT MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE PROBLEMS FLASHING CUSTOM ROM/KERNEL WITHOUT IT (guides are confusing if custom roms require flashing hboot)
Preparation:
1. busybox (install titanium backup and under problems? you can install busybox in a easy way)
2. Recommended: Clockwork recovery(rom manager in market)
3.Root and S off
4.Optional : remove or move sd card installed apps to internal memory or else LOOPDEVICE may be occupied and you may not be able to mount ubuntu. Do this if you encounter error (caused by app2 sd) please note that recent builds in xda mount loop device as 255 to avoid this problem.
You might want to use adb if necessary
5. android terminal from market
6. 2gb free space in sdcard (certain builds use 4gb as storage image, which is limit for fat32 system)
---------Kernel preparation ---------------------------------
Flashing necessary kernel
1. Download suitable kernel with loop device support. I am using cyanogen -> virtuous-kernel-cyanogen kernel from ://files.virtuousrom.com/vision/kernels/
(add http infront) on Stock HTC Sense Rom
2. To flash this, from rom manager, boot into clockworkmod recovery and select zip file to flash. Nandroid backup is recommended beforehand
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Now your phone has loopback support to chroot into UBUNTU or DEBIAN
Well, this method is not native ubuntu but it works fine.
You can now follow any guide on XDA like G1,nexus 1etc on running linux in android. I recommend nexus 1 hacks .com for ubuntu setup or thread "Debian for Desire" for debian setup (note debian seems to have problem with vnc) there are a lot of newbie frendly guides to do this without partitioning your sd card.
What can you do with them? You can use full android terminal , use vim , open office, gcc or eclipse etc ... makes your HTC Vision true small computer with keyboard . Enjoy
Possible solution to errors you encounter while following chroot tutorial for other android devices:
-----------------trouble shoot--------------------------------
Errors:
/device/loop is busy etc.... chroot: cannot execute /bin/bash etc... shutting down ubnutu etc....
Solution: 1. Get loopback support by flashing above kernel i mentioned
if not 2. TYPE SU BEFORE YOU RUN BOOTSCRIPT ON ANDROID TERMINAL
or if they say the bootscript is not found then type sh ./*your boot script name*
if not 3. move sd apps to phone as i mentioned eariler
Other errors could be from not installing busybox.
Note that in some cases, busybox is included inside the custom rom so you dont need to install it.
Post names of kernels with ability to run ubuntu for others to know.I did not test all of them.
This is my first guide on xda and i hope this helped xda in constructive way...
Post script: I will try my best to maintain quality of the posts to be up to xda standard. Thank you for constructive feedbacks...
quick problem i noticed
I'm running post ota de-odexed and I installed virtuous-kernel_vision_advanced-v1.0.9.zip in attempts to get loopdevice but now my phone doesn't react to an touch... hahaha it's no biggie I can't fix, just wanted to state out a weird outcome I have never seen before
But hey! Your prep guide is much appreciated!
EDIT: All of the 1.0.9 kernels seem to break my touch :/
you need virtuous-cyanogen 1.3 not standard vituous kennel. it is under cyanogen. Since it is developed for cyanogen, it should be fine for wide range of roms including sense roms but yes, it is buggy. I am looking for better kennel now....

Trying to run Ad Free

Hi everyone!
I am trying to make Ad Free from the Market work but it won't. My HTC Desire is rooted with unrevoked (so, not S-OFF, but I've read that it's not necessary. Is it?).
I have tried two different things:
1) Run the program WITHOUT the symlink option enabled. The phone automatically reboots and nothing happens, adds are still shown in all the apps.
2) Run the program WITH the symlink option enabled. The program seems to work and a message appears saying that my phone should now be add free. But, in fact, it is not, adds are still visible everywhere.
I have been looking for solutions in this forum and in Google but I have seen a lot of different procedures suggested by users and I am not sure it would be safe for the phone to try them one by one.
It would be great if someone has been in the same situation and could tell me how to solve my problem.
Thank you in advance.
You either have to be s-off in order for the app to place the modified "hosts" file in /system/etc/ Otherwise you have to have the file symlinked to a specific place on the data-position(this is the place the app places the "hosts" file if you check the option for symlink.)
You can also just push the modified hosts file from recovery
edit: my suggestion is to s-off it, as it makes everything so much easier, and if you screw something up, you can almost always recover your phone without running a ruu.

I have been trying to do that before opening this thread but I didin't manage to do it successfully. Could you please help me through the process?
Anyway, how could I do the "you have to have the file symlinked to a specific place on the data-position(this is the place the app places the "hosts" file if you check the option for symlink.)" part?
You need to edit the ROM to symlink the hosts file to the /data partition

don't do it just push the goddamn file in recovery or for god sake please just run s-off.

S-OFF doesn't work with all kinds of desire phones ...
some PVT-4 (like mine) cant be S-OFF u may brick it trying so just push files its safer using terminal emulator from market or using ADB
this may help u with commands http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688820
Well, in alfarev web site they say their software is compatible with PTV4 HTC Desire, but anyway mine is PTV3, so the problem can't be that.

Also no you cannot use terminal emulator to push files, and you most certainly cannot use it to manage files on the /system partition without s-off.
Dj Telo: the most common problems with alpharev is connected to the computer the software is run on. Are you using an emulator to boot the disk, or are you actually booting it?
If the first one is the case, you will need to burn the image and boot it, however, if that doesn't work, you might need to try another computer. Just borrow one, as it is a onetime thing, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Also make sure your current rom is not using d2sd, d2ext or something similar, as the tool uses the data-partition and may not work with the ext-partition,
I am very sure, you do not s-off to run adfree!!
Did you run "download & install hosts" directly after starting adfree and requested the superuser request to "yes" and "remember"? Which ip do you use?

Well as already explained the relevant file (/system/etc/hosts) is placed on the system partition(obviously). And as such it cannot be edited while the system is booted without s-off, so an app won't be able to do so.
So unless the system has been edited to load the file from the data-partition(as in the symlink option i referred to earlier) yes you do indeed need s-off to use the app. However as you might get from actually reading through the thread, the actual problem has been resolved, and currently he is just trying to gain s-off.

I've looked into it. While there are a few options to install roms from the pc, some of the commands are known to hang on completion, which means you can't really script them safely (you could add in some kill and restart commands, but you'd have to put like 2-5 min buffers on them to make sure it was done).
I've found that the quickest way to install roms is to use TWRP in the Defy Forums. It allows you to select multiple zips at a time to flash at once. I haven't used clockwork touch recovery yet.
I'll look into it a little more, cause typing something like "./rom_install.sh /path/to/rom.zip -gbgapps" to install a rom and gb gapps would be easy. If I can find a way to execute edify scripts (the ones used to install roms) from adb then this can be done. I can only make and test linux scripts since I no longer have windows, but Josuearisty can port it to windows shell script. I formatted my old windows drive to use my android compile drive .

Im not using TWRP either Touch Clockworkmod, both of them are not working as they should sometimes.
I supose that a fully working Touch Clockworkmod would restore an old backup made with our actual Clockworkmod recovery, but does not.
In the case of TWRP, works fine for some time but later it seems to get tired and when you make a backup, it says its complete inmediatly but it is still creating backup files.
It would be great to install roms with just hitting Enter coming from froyo. Do you think that just making some changes to the script, is it possible to install a rom the pc?

I'm sure its possible somehow, I've just never looked too deep into doing it. What ways I have found either used commands that would hang and require you to quit after 2 mins of activity and start the 2nd command which hangs the same thing -- not safe enough to script. The other ways were for broke\no sdcard and involved copying the rom to /data and then installing as normal.
What I think needs to be done is set up a script that copies the rom & gapps to the sdcard and executes their edify scripts. We need to figure out what command recovery uses to execute the script\install roms then incorporate it into an install script. You'd still have to reboot to bootmenu and enable adb, but that's all (unless we find a way to reboot and have adb already enabled (not good for all the time use, security concerns - it'd be possible to get around the bootmenu pin if adb was enabled on power up).

Well, look at the rom manager, watch how it does it. I think that looking into adb commands we can make a script works like rom manager.
When you select the rom, rom manager lets you wipe data & cache and also install gapps. The rom manager goes to recovery and inmediatly do all steps it self, you can also backup your actual rom.
Try it, download it from market and try it, I see your roms there too.
Some windows commands are:
Adb reboot recovery = reboot into recovery mode
Adb push FILE = copy files to whatever place into out phones. Example to copy a rom.zip to sdcard
Adb push rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zip
Those are windows commands, dont know if they could work on linux. If my pc wasnt broke I would be making some tests!

Great. Thank you. I'm rooting a friend's phone. He just wants something more reliable than stock. Would you say the CM7 is stable and reliable or should I put CM10 on it?

CM7 is more stable now, I have installed an official cm7 and then a patch for it.
Give me some minutes to upload it!

Which one should I use? Also, what is the SBF for Motorola Bravo? Sorry about the questions in this thread, I'm not familiar with this phone.

Use cm7. Very fast and stable with no random hiccups, rare force-closes. The SBF is the Motorola Bravo "factory ROM". To install it, you can use RSDlite or do it in linux, both of those tuts are found in the bravo general section. You probably won't have to use the SBF unless you brick your phone, which is a possibility, but flashing the sbf will unbrick it 99% of the time.
Current ROM: CM7.2 Euroskank Cherry Picks | Bravo port
I think I have a problem. The sim I put in to this phone is asking to log in with moto blur and nothing I try is working. So I can't switch the debug mode on. I even tried the bypass suggested by someone but fastboot is not preinstalled on this phone. All I get is the bootloader or stock recovery.
I also tied resetting the password but after I go thru it it just says there is no phone on this moto blur account.
Any help would be appreciated.
Edit:
I got it. I factory reset the phone and then was able to use the bypass motoblur ****.

Post a little more info.
What did you do?
Can you access custom, stock, or bootloader recovery?
Does it still charge?
And did you factory reset from Custom recovery or Stock recovery? Custom only wipes all data where Stock actually formats the partitions.
The easy way and a common issue we're having now.
Unless this is one of those CM10 ext4 issues, just flash the sbf and you should be good to go.
If you downgraded from CM10 and you were using ext4 /data and /cache, reinstall CM10, format back to ext3, then flash whatever you want.

What is that issue with cm10 ext4? Is that very dangerous for us?
I have been sometime out of the forum and I have lost some things!

The CM10 ext4 issue is when you flash a CM10 custom kernel rom and select format /data & /cache to ext4 in the bootmenu. Only custom kernels can use the ext4 file system, so what happens is you format them as ext4, install CM9, and it doesn't load because it can't mount /data and /cache to write them because they're on an unsupported file system. The only things you can do are reinstalling CM10 and formatting back to ext4 of flash the sbf in extreme cases. Its not dangerous at all, just very annoying if you forget to format back to ext3 .

[Q] FP1 - 1.6 unified storage upgrade: Problems

hi!
i installed the regulat 1.6 update to my FP1 and everything was just fine.
then I tried to install the "unified 1.6 update" which worked but the problems begun:
things I noticed:
1. backup ist not really a backup for the apps but just a way to reinstall the apps I had installed without any settings. not a fun way to find that out when reopening your apps.
2. the update to the 1.6 unifyed also messed with my SD card and deleted files and put new ones there. not something I was expecting. luckily I had a backup of the SD card.
the thing I am looking for a solution:
after merging the partitions I cannot acces the phone storage on my PC (mac osx 10.9.4). not directly as a drive. the android fil transfer tool works, but it does not have all abilities finder/explorere provides. how do I get acces to the phone storage again?
As all my settings are gone anyway I am open to reinstall the phone from scratch.

Because of the partition layout it no longer is possible to expose the internal storage as mass storage device. Adb will work but the preferred way of transferring files is using the MTP protocol.
I am not a mac user but I think you need to install some additional software.

thanks a lot, that is what I feared.
hi, i'm also have an upgrade problem: mine is that i can't upgrade at all.
i've repartitioned earlier with the app mentioned in the wiki (wiki/Fairphone_Fairphone/Guides#How_to_partition_your_Fairphone).
i've also done the steps _keesj descripes in thread "unified storage setup on re-partitioned FP1" ("Steps for "fiixing" your upgrade").
i'm having Cherry 1.6, and two 7 GB partitions.
does anyone has a solution?

thanks, i've read it again and tried _keesj's solution again, unfortunately it didn't solve my situation.
i'm a layman in this area, so probably i shoudn't haved 'played' with partitions at all (but with the app it was easy).
my previous post wasn't quite complete... i have had an unified partition before...
because of an app that didn't work, i used the repartition app again to see if that could solve the problem.
it did, but later i wondered if a wrong install in the unified sistuation was the problem... so i thought 'let's try the unified partition again'...
i thought i could simply re-use the Fairphone Updater...
so maybe i'm now having a unified partition divided in 2?
and lost the ability to ever upgrade to newer versions of the Fairphone OS?
i hope someone can help me...

Make sure you allow it to reinstall the default recovery.

how do I allow it? i didn't get the question you've got ("ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?").
i downloaded Cherry 1.6 again and chose Install, gave it SU (forever) access, it automatically restarted to the Android with the text “Installing system update…” (no progress bar), and after a few minutes it restarted and nothing is changed. After starting the Fairphone Updater again, it immediately gave the Install option again. Same after selecting the Storage Upgrader.
I also tried restoring from the recovery (default, never replaced), from sd and adb (1.6 does install, 1.3 doesn't, and 1.6 partition upgrader doesn't either, gets aborted)…

Non unified images have a different signature. The moment you use the partition upgrader it will change the accepted signature and will no longer allow older images. If all is as I expected your running image is still the parition upgrader image and it contains the tools to perform the last step of the re-partitioning (e.g. calling the script and performing a recovery with format).
If you want to know what is going wrong with the zip install check the /cache/recovery direcotry. it will contain logs of the failing install.
As for a solutions I think you either need to run the script or flash your device using a 1.6 FUSE image.

I couldn't find any (log) files in /cache/recovery, but...
flashing the EBR1 from the FUSE binaries (FP1U) to my FP1 solved it! :victory:
thanks to _keesj, Rick (from Fairphone) and Christian (Fairphone forum)!
here is Rick's tutorial (with a few notes of my own):
You can only fix this by flashing your phone:
For GURU's only! (flashing with ADB). The alternative is to use the windows flasher tool.
1) Download the original image binaries from Fairphone's site (as a new user I, jjjanssen, can't post links yet).
(Download FP1U's zip: Fairphone_Cherry_1.6_FUSE_Image_2014-07-31.zip)
2) unzip the file
(I chose to unzip to location D:/FP1U.
after that i moved all content from the directory which contained EBR1, to D:/FP1U.)
3) enable usb debugging (on your phone: Settings, Developer options, turn USB debugging on)
4) push EBR1 on the phone: (Open (if you're using Windows) the Command Prompt)
adb push FP1U/EBR1 /mnt/sdcard/
(For instructions on how to use ADB search this site)
5) become root:
adb shell
(after that I also became super user (command su), but maybe that's not necessary; Rick didn't mention it. )
6) override the partition inforation:
dd if=/mnt/sdcard/EBR1 of=/dev/ebr1
7) reboot into recovery:
reboot recovery
8) choose to wipe data and cache
(after that, choose reboot)
