First post. So, I have a Evo but I won a iPad (wifi only) online the other day and i'm thinking about keeping it or selling it. I know Sprint has a Hotspot option that you can use on the phone but I don't want to pay $30/month for it which is crazy in my opinion. I downloaded EasyTether off the appstore so I can tether for free which is great on my laptop, but if I keep the iPad and take it around with me i want to be able to get online with it, so it would be great to have the Hotspot functionality on my phone. I know you can activate hotspot functionality by rooting the Evo, but I just updated to 2.2 and as far as I am aware there is no 2.2 root option yet.
So in the meantime I guess I was just wondering if anyone who has a iPad uses the Evo's hotspot functionality. I was also curious in general how it performs over 3G with wifi devices and if there is any option like Easy Tether so you can use hotspot functionality for free until there is a root for 2.2 on Evo?

We took a trip to the mountains a week ago. I used the EVO hotspot utility to connect my laptop and my wife's ipad and my son's ipod touch to the internet all at the same time! Worked like a charm! just remember to change the default setting at set a new SSID and password.
I believe that if you can connect with your laptop you should be able to connect with your iPad. I've always been able to connect with my iPad whether it was adhoc or AP mode.
Well i started paying for the 30 bucks option becuase the free wifi cap my speeds real bad and i was rooted back then but now im stock with rooted icons wierd but dont work but works awsome the hotspot for me i have 3 360 coneected amd 2 ps3 and my msi netbook connected and works bad ass i love it yea some lag but it ok for me

Well, I can connect my Laptop to my Evo via USB using EasyTether Lite so I can get online with my laptop for free but I need free Hotspot functionality so I can use it with my iPad, but idk what I could do since I updated my Evo to 2.2.

I know that iPods (3rd gen) aren't able to connect to AP networks, since I've hosted from my laptop before and it couldn't see it.

If you want the iPad, keep it. It sound like the iPad can connect to even AP infrastructure networks. Although I'm pretty sure the Hotspot app, and wireless tether, both aren't AP network (although I don't know what it hosts, that's not my area ).
Basically, Hotspot would work if you felt like $30. Otherwise I'd wait for 2.2 to get rooted.
I honestly don't know what I'm saying anymore cause I'm watching tv and writing this. And there's models...
Oops I wasn't aware that EasyTether was done through USB. In that case, since you don't have root and upgraded to 2.2, you can either set up internet sharing on your laptop and connect using adhoc mode, or pay the $30 for the official tethering.

or you can pay $0 to root your phone, install any 2.2 ROM, and use android wifi tether.

Either 1: Open up your Apps page and look for the widget "Wi-Fi Hotspot" (on my Desire it is placed just before the YouTube widget"
or 2: open Settings, Wireless & networks and select "Portable Wi-fi Hotspot"
This has allowed me to connect my iPad via my Desire's data connection.
the desire on official froyo unrooted has a hotspot widget preinstalled as mentioned above.
my friends iphone and laptop spotted it fine. so no reason why an ipad wouldnt find it.
i note that evo can connect to many devices as can be seen from other posts here, but the htc desire has a max limit of 2 devices via the wifi hotspot at a time, although i dont know if you could connect more devices by using usb tether and bluetooth tether at the same time too. you dont need apps from anywhere for wifi or usb tether on 2.2 official version. i dont know if 2.2 allows bluetooth tether but if satnav devices can piggy back to net connection on phones i dont see why tethering cant be done but might be slow. there are apps on cnet for wifi and blueetooth tethering (cnet editor reviewed apps).
I believe the Sprint approved version of Froyo has Android WiFi removed and replaced by their own app.
Now that it's possible to root, I installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9.

Hotspot and wireless tether are both AP, zune hd doesn't do adhoc and i was able to connect to my evo with it
Has anyone found the Samsung drivers necessary to get the native USB tethering working? I see the drivers mentioned in the user manual, but haven't gotten a hold of them yet...

Tethered Mode allows your computer to obtain an external data connection by using the device’s wireless data services and a wired USB connection. Tap USB tethering to activate tethering mode.
Important: If you are using your device for Tethering, you may be prompted for additional drivers. The Samsung Mobile Driver for SPH-D710 contains the ADB, CDMA, & WiMAX drivers that are required for using either Tethering (Phone as a Modem) or development tools.
- Go to SAMSUNG and visit the D710 Product page, where you can navigate to the Download Center to obtain this driver.
- The online FAQ also provide detailed information about this driver.
- A wireless data connection can be done by using the device’s Sprint Hotspot feature.

However at that website, all you can currently download is the manual - no drivers. Any ideas? Anybody know where to get the drivers?

Well with a USB cable plugged in, you can turn the feature on, but the computer doesn't recognize it without the drivers. I'm hoping that's a good sign...

I would be thrilled if that were the case. It isn't likely, but, bigger things have been overlooked before.

Select "Software" next to "Manuals."
Unsurprisingly, it looks like Sprint has disabled USB tethering.
I've installed the drivers, and the computer and phone successfully connect. Once USB tether is enabled, however, the phone will drop both 4G and 3G connections and throw up the following (see attached screenshot):

I know the software/ drivers are configured properly because I can pass the internet connection on to the computer when the phone is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.
Really disappointed (but not surprised)...

Not easytether, but PDANet works.
is it free? and doesn't require root?
I haven't tried Easytether on the phone yet, but I can confirm PDAnet works and is free , although it's limited to http only and no https unless you buy the paid version. Easytether changed their application so now it has like a week trial before it shuts down.
what i hate about easytether and PDAnet is you have to have the client installed on the machine already for that to work. i liked how my EVO (rooted) had the option to USB tether on any computer... guess i gotta wait until some good ROMs come out.
Just root the phone people and install wifi tether. Works flawlessly

Yeah, I've tried rooting the phone and then using the wifi tether and it worked for a while then it stopped working. Now I can't get it to connect to the PC.
Would be nice if there was a better way of tethering for free

If you use PDANet, the phone with PDANet installed will automatically detect if the computer has the client installed or not. If it does NOT have the client already installed, it will prompt you to download the windows EXE onto the phone, and then you can install the client onto the computer from the EXE it downloads onto your phone.
It's saved me a few times working out in the field.
I have the Sprint Hotspot hack that allows 4G or 3G to tether via Wifi without the plan. I would like USB tether as well to work, is there something that uses the NDIS instead of their own client? I know both MAC and Windows work with the NDIS device sharing... If not, what's the best one that will tether 4G via USB?
FL29 radio and im running GB 2.3.6 (dont care much about the ICS / Jelly Bean unless they have both 3G and 4G tether'able via Wifi and USB)
Anybody have played with ICS and gotten the 3G and 4G thetherable at least via Wifi? Wifi thether for root didn't work for me, reason why I went back to 2.3.6 and the FL29 Odexed SpotHot fix.

Otherwise Custom roms all seem to have USB and wifi tethering enabled.

Im not using Wifi Tether for Root users, doesn't work on my Galaxy S2 with 4G...
Just a FYI... every stock ROM for this phone has always had working USB tethering in the settings.

Forgot to mention I am on Boost, they don't offer tethering service for me
I was really considering buying an Acer Iconia until I used my aunt's. I tried using barnacle on my rooted Droid X2 to get online, but the tablet wouldn't pick it up. I understand that barnacle is an ad-hoc connection, and that there's some threads about enabling ad-hoc or something on this subforum. Is there any way to tether my phone to the tablet? Or is it hopeless? If there is, then I just may buy one.

Once you get root access, it's actually really easy! It's just copy-and-pasting the file on the link to the location.
...or just use PdaNet Tablet (Beta), free @ the Market.
I've been using "open garden wifi tether" on my phones forever and have never had any connection problems. Its free on the market, I use it in conjunction with "tablet talk" and I just do everything except calling from my tablet.

I've tethered many devices in the past...iPhones, Android phones, tablets, laptops, PSPs, etc. I'm using OpenGarden and I can tether two different laptops just fine to my Nexus S, but for some reason my A100 CANNOT see the network. No security, broadcasting...even when manually adding the network...am I missing something? The phone and tablet are right next to eachother, and I even tried seperating them to make sure it's not that they're TOO close.
I know I've read the A100 may have weaker wifi than one might hope for, but it works just fine throughout my house to connect to my wifi network - I can't see why it wouldn't see a phone broadcasting right next to it?
And this isn't an AD-HOC connection, so I can't imagine I would need to root the tablet for it to work. Any ideas?
Edit: Nevermind, forgot the phone has a built in tethering app (that I don't like because it lacks Access Control) and that worked just fine, so whatever problem I'm having must be OpenGarden related.
I've been trying to tether my Iconia A100 (not rooted) with my HTC Evo 3D (which is rooted).
I've tried using the Sprint Hotspot and the Android tether. In each case, the tablet sees the connection and seems to connect and it works for a little while, but after a short time even though it seems to be connected, there is no WiFi connectivity.
I just tried PDANet/FoxFi and FoxFi gave a message that the WiFi hot spot isn't supported on HTC phones. I tried the BT tether and again it seemed to connect, but there was almost no connectivity. Same thing happened with OpenGarden (that seemed to allow BT only -- it doesn't do WiFi -- or is that also because of the HTC phone)?
Is there any way to tether the Iconia to this phone without rooting the tablet?
I work in a dead zone, so I have wifi but no mobile data.
With my new Pixel 2 XL, I cannot USB tether that wifi connection to my laptop. When I try to tether with no mobile data, or mobile data turned off the phone still tries to do a subscription check.
For reasons I do not care to discuss, I cannot connect my laptop directly to the wifi at work, I have to connect through my phone, which I can no longer do. Apparently, the subscription check was turned off by default on the Nexus 6P and so I never had this issue. Now my Pixel 2 XL will not let me share a wifi connection to my laptop via USB/ The phone has to check with my career if it will be ok to share a connection that is not theirs?
Is there a way to fix this? The whole reason I bought the google phone is that I didn't want to have to root and manually update it all the time. I'm ok with rooting it if there's a way to fix this using root, then turn off root so I can still get auto updates, but of course, it's never really been that simple in the past with other devices.
So far the only solution I can think of is to buy a second phone (another Nexus 6P) and carry them both so that I can wifi to USB tether?

While this doesn't mean I'm perfect at searching, if anyone can find this quickly, I'd still appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Does anyone know a work around or a way to enable bluetooth tethering on SM-N975U from ATT? We have the unlimted elite plan with 30 GB hotspots enabled on each of our 6 lines, but for some reason ATT decided to neuter how I choose to connect my hotspots. I called and complained, got bumped up to tier 3 support and no one feels like helping. You would think paying $450 a month for service and phones would warrant at least a solution but no, they said suck it.
I have an android auto radio in my truck and I just want to get into the car, and drive, not have to stop, pull out my phone, turn on the hotspot and wait. Is that so [email protected] much to ask ATT???
Anyways, anyone have a solution for this besides using an NFC tag stuck somewhere in my truck, buying a new phone or getting a dedicated hotspot?

You mean wifi tethering? That's how you tether it to other phones and computers.
You need a password from AT&T to set it up.
Pretty straight forward even with older laptops and phones.
Once done it works pretty well.

Not quite, bluetooth tethering is an android feature where when your device connects via bluetooth to certain devices it enables the mobile hotspot on your phone. ATT has removed that option from the mobile hotspot function on our devices. I can still use my Note as a hotspot for my car's head unit, but i have to open the phone and turn mobile hotspot on in order to connect.
It's just an inconvenience, but it doesn't make any sense because I'm already paying for the feature (Mobile Hotspot). Why are they limiting on how I turn the [email protected] thing on???

Stupid Q, why use it if you can tether using wifi?
Isn't it less secure than wifi?
On my 10+ running on unpatched Pie it certainly is.
It's just called Bluetooth Tethering. You're still tethering through Mobile Hotspot (wifi). It just sees you're connected by Bluetooth to a device you allow to use your mobile hotspot and starts the hotspot automatcially.

Once you set up wifi tethering it will do the same thing once the device gets in range as long as you leave wifi and the tether enabled.
Yes but the mobile hotspot times out after you're away from the device for so long. That's the beauty of the Bluetooth tether because bt is on all the time.

Mine would reaquire within a few seconds unless I powered down one or turned off wifi.
That said AT&T is a pain, but the other major carriers are worse in many respects.
AT&T actually gives better tech support than their partner, Samsung. Scary.
Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm trying to enable my mobile hotspot automatically when my Note 10+ connects by bluetooth to my truck's android head unit. This way the head unit will have wifi access through my phones mobile hotspot. Bluetooth tethering is how Android accomplishes this but ATT has neutered our UI to remove this feature even though I pay for mobilie hotspot on my account.
