4.4 Approved, Rollout soon - Verizon HTC One (M7)

According to this, Verizon has approved the 4.4 update, and we should be expecting the OTA rollout "shortly".

I'm debating on taking it or not. It doesn't look like 4.3 Root/S-Off will be happening at all, so I guess at this point, I might as well take it, as there probably won't be another major software overhaul anytime soon.

I'm sure one of our great devs will have a stock rooted Rom available shortly after the ota just like santod did with 4.3

4.3 can be S-off'd and unlocked using Firewater.
4.4, we don't know for sure yet...

Wha?!? Man.. I suppose I've just been stuck in the rumrunner thread awaiting updates.
I saw Firewater mentioned, but thought that was just another 4.2 root.
I suppose I should check that out. I was getting anxious here.

Really hope this update helps with the purple camera hue. "Improved low light performance" seems pretty good.

Update is live and rolling out! See my post in the main general thread. My wife is downloading now. I am in SW Missouri. Have fun!

Do we know or suspect anything yet in regard to
1) keeping root through the 4.4 OTA?
2) the negative impact of accepting the OTA on a rooted device running TWRP? I read something today that seemed to indicate that you needed the stock recovery to accept the OTA, so perhaps this is a moot point.
Related Note:
Why do I care if I am rooted? Why don't I just wait and flash a custom Sense 5.5 based on the new OTA firmware when it becomes available? It's interesting - I keep going back to my stock, rooted, original rom after flashing multiple roms available here on XDA, even some very good ones. HTC has done a pretty darn good job with Sense 5, and while I had no qualms leaving 3.6 behind for stock AOSP Android when available, I find myself missing Sense features when I use AOSP or GPE on my One. I've messed around with a couple of Sense custom roms, and I keep returning to the original firmware. I appreciate the ability to remove apps entirely through TiBu, so keeping root is good, and I reserve the ability to flash a custom rom if I get itchy want to, but I look at the fact that we are soon to receive an OTA, and I am torn. I know that it will be likely a matter of hours before someone Santod posts a stock rooted Verizon 4.4, but I've already set mine up exactly the way I wanted it. It's funny, after spending a couple of months not flashing new roms, both on the last month of my Bolt when there was nothing new and in the first month of having the One when 4.3 couldn't be rooted, I got really annoyed at the amount of time I was spending setting up accounts and preferences and mods and whatnot during the last week of flashing custom One roms. /rambling

People talk about this a lot in here, but I've never seen it on my One. I purchased new in January; I wonder if that is the difference.

Verizon pulled a fast one on me. I am thoroughly impressed.

Not to make you worry or anything, because chances are you're fine...but, it took my One about 3 months to develop camera issue. I'm not sure if they started putting updated hardware in the later builds or not. They very well could have and you'll be good to go.

Rule #1 of rooting, never take an OTA. If you want to take it. You must first completely unroot, then accept the OTA. Otherwise wait for a dev to release a rooted version.

If you're rooted or running any other system modification, the OTA won't apply to your phone. Even if you try, it will fail and you'll just reboot back to your normal phone. Your best bet is to actually install an EK02-based ROM. If you want to stick to stock with just the new modem and kernel, and keep root, I recommend the UnNamed ROM that was recently posted. It's basically a rooted, debloated stock with CIQ removed.
Basically exactly what I was looking for.
It also includes the latest CWM, making future flashes nice and easy.

Sprint said that its a minor update thats primary fixes are for:
- 4G Sprint Hotspot disconnects when in a phone call
- Radio loses signal and may require power cycle
Couldn't hurt i guess. But there are a bunch of roms already out there that are using the ek02 update. Just use one of those so you dont have to do double the work.

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.

You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.

well with everyone saying that nobody wants to release a root exploit that'll be patched by 4.3, I would guess that devs would rather root 4.3 than 4.2.2
I am not sure if it works this way with bootloader unlocking and all but I remember reading back in the Windows XP days that exploits would come out after a patch. The exploit guys would see what was patched and then exploit that knowing not everyone had applied the update. So I am going to wait a little bit if an OTA comes out just in case someone can look at what was patched and find a way in.

THIS is exactly why you DO NOT EVER take an OTA if you want root.
prime example, the SG4 just got an OTA, it literally didn't update much of anything except take root + recovery away from those foolish enough not to listen to the warnings
I'm unlocked and I usually run stock Rom's. When the first OTA came out I just took it. I lost root but all I had to do was flash my super su zip and I was back in business. Why wouldn't I just be able to do the same with this next OTA?

It makes so much sense, I am confused why people decide that an OTA is better than an OTA with root?
no patience I believe.
me wants 4.3 NOW
in all reality it'll prob be mostly security fixes and some software fixes like camera, unless VZW actually does us a solid and gets an OTA out to fix that damn bug
It's like this, most uninformed people would rather be able to say they have 4.3 while their friends may only have 4.2 still. "I'm better, my number is higher." Intel played that game with the Pentium 4 back in the day. Just because they had a 2Ghz processor didn't mean the AMD counterpart at 1.46Ghz didn't rip it a new one.
Same goes here. With the newer patches and updates come new FIXES, which is exactly what we don't want. Our wonderful devs here are doing the same things the guys who work with the Verizon updates are... Finding exploits and if Verizon finds them first and you end up patching with an OTA, well you're screwed then aren't you?
Just say no to OTA.
Is there a way to be sure OTA won't get installed? I can remember waking up in the morning to find my Rezounds sitting at the yellow triangle due to failed OTA's that I never initiated? Had the same thing happen on a friends DINC2. I recall deleting otacerts.zip from /system/etc/security to prevent this, does this still apply today?
Being Dev Unlocked worst case is I would have to reunlock using the Unlock_code.bin I have saved?
People keep asking this question for every device whenever there's an OTA on the way. Tons of people go out of their way to warn them not to take an OTA ever if they're interested in root. I say just let them learn from their mistakes.

Not sure. Been away from HTC for awhile. More than likely the code will no longer work. They are blowing Q-fuses on a lot of these devices now to permanently kill RW of the bootloader like old Moto devices. Search and find the files that allow update if on stock. The devs should have already disabled on any custom roms.

Verizon HTC One S-Off Discussion Thread

Here is a place to discuss the current methods of S-Off.
We have Sonic2765's java card which will always work, and a promised method from beaups.
Sonic's Java Card will work on any device.
Sonic's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427960
Beaups method will work on any device even with the minor OTA that was released.
So, it seems safe to take the OTA, but I am not responsible if this is incorrect.
This is amazing! Was waiting for this since I didn't have another phone to use so I could send mine to Sonic. Also glad that beaups said that it WILL work with the latest OTA! Just glad for an exploit since my original One had to be exchanged...

That, sir, is great news. Cause I'm sick of getting reminded to update..
Any idea if he hopes to release sometime soon? Or after 4.3 is released?
More than likely after 4.3 would be my guess. We wouldn't want verizon to include a fix for the exploit with 4.3 causing a delay in the release. I don't know for sure, just my guess.

I agree, most of us will be running custom roms anyway, so there would be no reason really to ota, and also no reason why someone won't just make a safe flashable zip for us after ota is released... The only way the soff method would suck is if they patched it and people with replacement after the update, or just new phone owners wouldn't be able to do it, which is kinda a big deal...

Thats a valid point, I just don't see benefit in waiting. but like nexus said, they could release a small patch right after 4.3 and we would have the same outcome. or they may find this exploit before we even release it and the will just patch it in 4.3 either way. But i would like to thank beaups for putting in the time and effort! I know this stuff isn't easy so thanks!
I wish he would make a thread so people could give him thanks and he could give us updates on the process.
I'm not waiting on any vzw updates. Just need to get everything done. It will be done "soon".

ND8 KitKat source is posted on the opensource page..here comes KitKat with 3.4 kernel

Let the ROM watch begin. Here comes ND8 KitKat. CNexus confirms that with this update we will finally be on a 3.4 kernel!

No, you can't install anything from this link. It's source for developers. But it means in the next day or so the roll out of ND8 KitKat will begin OTA.
It's great news.
And as always, don't just excitedly grab the update before you find out what's in it. We don't need another thread full of whiners.
There are plenty of competent people here who can modify the OTA if needed; the last time it took only a few days after the roll-out.
Awesome
Remember, if you get the notification, please try and get the actual file name of the update file and post it here. Once we have that name we can suss out the full download path of the file and it can be downloaded directly from the google server. In the past the path has been:
android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/sprint_samsung_l710/XXXXXXXXXXX
where the X's are replaced by the file name.
Post the filename here if you get it!
Noted.

Cant wait for this one !
If this is anything like KitKat for the Note3 it will be a winner. My Note 3 got way faster when I updated to KitKat. It was the single biggest improvement I have ever seen on a device with an OS update and I started using Android when the Samsung Moment came out on Sprint !

It means they can hax0r it so that it does not take away your phones ability to be rooted and pretty much boring.
So...They hax0r it, you continue to root it, then your phone continues to r0x0rs your b0x0rs all nightx0rs........:victory:
That's basically it. Things can be twisted around a bit if needed and any remaining bugs can be remedied.

We can remove checks of your bootloader version, remove flashing of the new bootloader, etc.
Ah okay. Sounds good. So hold off until a stripped OTA is posted. Got it. Now to just find a 4.4.2 Rom that mimics The S4/5.
yeah im waiting for the @CNexus version.

As soon as I get a link/zip from someone :good:
Finally...now I can update the wife's and daughter's phones....JB really borked the daughters so much so that I told the wife not to update so this will finally relive me of having to answer "my phone keeps telling me to update something, should I?" questions...
And before someone yaps up about "why not root" - it's because I don't want to deal with the bugs/updates/mods on their phones and besides, Flixster (an app they both use a lot) doesn't work on rooted phones (until somebody releases an update to OTA Rootkeeper or other app that hides root).
