8 core update for exynos? ! - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

So...., are we getting this 8 core update or what?

Doesn't seem like it , it's been confirmed that note 3 will not be getting the 8 core patch...since it's in essence a smaller version of the note 10.1 , well you do the math.
Can someone prove me wrong?? (please)

There are both thermal and battery life concerns. If Samsung thought this would up the anti for performance and not compromise stability or battery life, they would probably release it.

it would be nice to turn off the weaker cores then. i'd suspect them to be a cause of a lot of the lagginess and frame drops in video players. bs player has been the smoothest so far.

I believe there were a few articles floating around specifically saying that the CPU in the note 10.1 2014 edition could potentially get the true octacore mode. I believe there were also demo videos using this tablet in another thread.

Here's the thread from the N3 forum showing a tablet running HMP. It's clearly a test mule and not a N10.1-14. Here's the bottom line about adding HMP after the fact - there's nothing in it for Samsung. All the current products are marketed with a defined "high end" performance capability and are vaguely marketed as "four core" for S-800 and "1.9+1.3" for Octa. What's the benefit to Samsung of lighting up all eight cores to exceed today's performance and to take on the burden of the impact to battery life and potential thermal issues? All for something that only enthusiasts (us) know or care about.
The only clear benefit of implementing HMP is adding the four A7 cores on top of the four A15 cores to improve high-end performance which will end up tanking today's battery life. As implemented, 1-4 cores of each cluster can run within a given cluster and the gains of mixing and matching clusters (EG: 4 A7+1 A15 vs. 2/3 A15) is unproven and questionable.
So maybe future Octa chips will run HMP but, primarily because there's no benefit to Samsung of doing anything to existing devices, I don't see it being made retroactive.

With what kind of videos do you experience frame drops? I use my tablet very often while using my cross-trainer to watch video and never experienced any frame drops. I tried MX Player, Dice Player and VPlayer and they are all smooth - actually no wonder, because they all use the HW acceleration for playback which can handle HD content without any problems.

aac and ac3 seem to cause the most problems SD and HD. I generally keep the nitrate around 2.5 Mb/s just for portability sake. container doesn't matter as avi, mkv, and mp4 all have the drops. I've used mx, BS, Archos, xbmc, and a few others and installed custom codecs if needed. heck even Netflix has a few frame drops. maybe I'm just too sensitive to it, but my s4, gn2, and gn8 have no problems. my old gn10.1 had no problems either. this 10.1 2014 is also the first Samsung device I've had that doesn't natively support ac3. hardware playback with alternative players do play the ac3 audio, but with dropped frames.

So does the note 2014 doesn't have HMP?
Does the new one 12.2 has it.

That's strange, almost all my video files contain ac3 6-channels audio and playback is smooth without any frame drops.

I believe there was a demo at CES with hmp running on the Note 10.1. I'm almost positive. Where was it confirmed the note 3 was not getting it? Just curious.

If Samsung was going to add HMP to the current generation of Exynos they would have tied it to something big, like the launch of a new $750+ tablet. HMP was shown on a test tablet, not the N10.1-14. Idealists keep hoping but it's not likely to happen.

Do you happen to know what SoC the test tablet was running? Everything I read said it was the 5420. Btw, I don't own a Note 10.1 - I still have a ****ty iPad 3. I haven't heard anything from "idealists" just going over what I have read from folks at the event. From what I have read, it seems as likely to happen on the Note 10.1 and Note Pro as it is to NOT happen. I have heard it won't happen on the Note 3; however, I assume that is due to size and heat issues. Shouldn't be the case with the lager tablets.
Only time will tell. You or I certainly don't know. I'm gonna wait to buy a new tablet and keep an eye on it though.
Thanks,

There's not one commercial/business reason for Samsung to update tablets already on the market beyond their published specs. Zip. Zero. Nada. And there's a reason not to. If an update to the SoC goes wrong and borks the tablet they have the liability of repairs. Enthusiasts (us) know what HMP is. The masses don't know, don't care, and are fine with what they're getting/got.

The N10.1-14's battery life is "adequate" and the Exynos version takes forever to charge. The only benefit of HMP is adding the A7 cores on top of the A15 cores at max load. That's going to take a toll on battery life and increase the thermal load beyond what the device is designed for possibly impacting component life. Forgive me if I'm not enthused.

That's interesting to know. All of the test I have read about prior had gains in battery life by using the cores much more efficiently. You posted a video describing this process in detail and how it helped battery life, then you post the exact opposite opinion?
Something else I find interesting is that you say implementing HMP would "increase the thermal load beyond what the device is designed for" Yet... we all know that HMP is hardware-enabled in the 5420 SoC. So couldn't it be said that the device was designed to use HMP? I think it could.. nay, it should lol.
Wait a sec! I get it!! I just saw that you have fought this battle before with Iba21 - You really seem to have something against this whole thing lol. From what I just read, Iba21 really pooped on your entire argument and you stopped responding.
Don't worry about responding as I'm getting out of this "discussion". It's clear you have an opinion as do I.. Only time will tell who's is more accurate.

Saying inflammatory things and then posting "no need to reply" is passive aggressive. There are two possible benefits of HMP - 1) using combinations of A7 and A15 cores across clusters and 2) going beyond the current max of 4 A15 cores. Do you know if there's battery life to be saved by using 2 A7 cores and 1 A15 core as opposed to using 2 A15 cores? I don't but I'm guessing the advantage to be minimal. You don't have to be an engineer to understand that using cores in addition to the current max of 4 A15's is going to create more heat and draw more power.

Just a thought, but allowing HMP during periods of high load and having all 8 cores online all the time represent two different scenarios. If core OS functions could remain on an A7 and yield all 4 A15s to applications, you could see an improvement purely due to a reduction in OS interrupt servicing. The case for thermal dissipation and battery life represents an unknown as to how much of an impact it would really have. It would be highly dependent upon how heavily you are using the active cores. The penalty would be proportionate to how hard you're pushing it.
All that said, I tend to agree with BarryH_GEG. Samsung hasn't demonstrated a lot in the forward thinking department. They make capable tablets, but just don't have it together on a lot of fronts and definitely don't strive to optimize products in a way that delivers maximum performance. Their focus is primarily on gimmicks and visual features and hitting a point of "acceptable", not exceptional performance. I'm not bashing, I have owned numerous galaxy line products and will continue to do so until a viable active digitizer tablet surpasses the note line. It's just a business play on their part. You expend enough development resources to get a mainstream sale, no more.
The note 12.2 is a prime example. At the time of release, Samsung has no book cover available, poor planning. They didn't have Hancom Office in the preloaded image and it wasn't available until a day after release, also poor planning. The end result is a customer experience that isn't smooth and demonstrative of a company that gives significant consideration to first impressions or user experience.

I have had my Note 2014 (32GB) for two days and would not want to have both core sets running at the same time. The device can already get very warm in the SOC area and the battery drains just like my iPad 4 when playing 3D games- faster than I want it to. Games are smooth and ditto for apps, so not seeing an advantage of all eight, but see the two key disadvantages. Not running into any core hand-off issues some are reporting that can cause lag. Not yet anyway.
Added:
I use Nova for my launcher, since IMO much better than Samsung's. Based on performance, I see no reason for me to root the 2014. Very happy already, so see no need to rock the boat.

It's not the size of the hardware, it's how you use it.

I've seen this argument now 100 times over that you should not consider WP7 or have anything to do with WP7 due entirely to the fact that the hardware is 'last-gen.' Well, I'm standing in the store with my DVP along-side an Atrix and I've been doing some similar and even the same apps and games between the two and the DVP seems to be doing much, much, better. Of course the UI on the DVP is 1000 times smoother regardless of hardware but that's a given due to the lack of a hardware accelerated UI on android. The iphone is smoother in some of the apps due to microsoft's stupid 30 fps... thing but the OS on the DVP is even smoother than the iphone. I have to give the iphone credit though due to it's underclocked nature it's barely beaten by WP7 in terms of UI and smokes WP7 in terms of apps. If the UI wasn't so ugly and the hardware was a little less limited it would be the only valid choice in my opinion. So yeah, just the fact that there are dual-core processors on some android devices doesn't mean anything if it can't properly utilize them. I guess that was the whole point I was trying to make.
My Motorola Razr is 1000 times faster than your Dell. Your point?
Hardware acceleration is there, its been there for a while. Do some research. You would see the devices wouldn't be useable without it.
Your do know dual cores, do a lot more than make things faster, don't you?

You mad bro?
If anything, you should've talked about the fact that it has nothing to do with dual-cores in general but due to the fact that the Atrix is a mass of poor coding.
You could've also stated that dual cores generally make the phone use less power and be more efficient leading to better battery life.
Instead, I have to ask, what the hell can a RAZR do faster?

Hardware acceleration is there, however the UI is not GPU accelerated which is why android is generally laggy. I've done my research. I'm aware of what dual-cores do but it's supposed to make it faster as a big part and hey... it's not much faster due to the UI itself. I can't even imagine how powerful an iDevice or a WP7 device would be with that under the hood but the only thing that's been selling android for awhile is that their hardware is bigger and badder.
No, I was attempting a joke. Failed huh?
I could've mentioned a lot of stuff.
yeah moto basically can't code for ****. Let's compare Apple to Apple.
The iPad 2 runs an A5 dual-core processor whereas the iPad runs an A4 single core, both good processors,
but you can see improvement in speed, fluidity, and general handling of the A5 over the A4 and dual-cores make it possible for higher resolution output (the Evo 3D will output 1080p via HDMI) as well video decoding and things that actually utilize it. The motocrap UI sucks no matter which device is using it I don't care if they put a 6-core i7 in there.
The thing is that WP7 is behind with no front facing camera on any device, and last gen snapdragons. It's just a fact. The iPhone 5 supposedly has the same dual-core A5 with a 4" screen and will SMOKE any WP7 device for at least a year or more.
don't use the worst example to try to compare.

Really think they'd go up to a 4 inch screen... hey, it may be a worthwhile phone then... The size of the processor is entirely null on android though, the UI isnt going to speed up because the coding for android in general just isn't that hot. WP7 is still the smoothest UI out there on a "last-gen" snapdragon. I would like to see a front facing camera considering there were rumors of windows video chat back in January but really the hardware despite being old utilizes the hardware better than android utilizes it's most up-to-date hardware. There will still be no GPU acceleration unless the OEM codes it in themselves on a device to device basis and considering that the OEMs just want to slam device after device to sell as many different devices as possible that's highly unlikely.

Eh, I'm sorry, I've tried the latest devices T-mobile had to offer up to the MT4g and regardless of CM or whatever it was still slow in comparison to WP7 and I feel that won't be resolved until the OEMs decide to make the UI GPU accelerated. To be perfectly honest I haven't been particularly impressed with HTC's WP7 devices... they're slow compared to the other OEMs and choppy... I hate using the HD7 after using the DVP for a few hours. Internally they're pretty much the same and I don't know what the difference is but HTC's general lack of quality shows.
WP7's smoothness is mainly in the default applications and system software. If you test a lot of apps on WP7 you see that, that smoothness is not truly apparent in most 3rd party apps which is unfortunate.

way to compare last year's phones to those coming out later this year (rumor is a fall release).
hell, the DS7 has a dualcore processor, does that make it a top tablet?
^ for the price it does. Mine is super fast and smooth.
Well, there aren't many tablets out right now, but I wouldn't say it's tops.
It has a low res screen which really helps it perform better, compared to other tablets and the only other tablet that was out at the time (Galaxy Tab, I'm speaking Google-endorsed tablets) had phone specs with a large screen...
WP7 would have benefitted from using a better SoC at launch because phones are sold mostly on 2 year contracts and, well, a year after release there will be tons of polished Dual Core phones. Also, since all WP7 devices are supposed to get updates future proofing them at least somewhat would have been good for the platform as a whole, and customers obviously.
It will be interesting to see how many updates these launch phones recieve after Mango, IMO.
I think dual core is not a big deal. A well managed single core processor is more than enough for a phone... unless you want to run two processor intensive apps. But if you think about it, do you ever run such apps simultaneously? All modern phone OS put an app in hibernation when you switch to some other processor intensive app.
There have been a few different points or comparisons made in this thread. Here are my 2 cents on it.
iPad2 performs so much better than iPad... the majority of the improvement comes from a very good GPU. Apple is very good at using the GPU and thus the difference is obvious. Nevertheless, tablets are very likely to be used to do processor intensive tasks simultaneously. Thus dual core can be utilized to its potential.
The barrage of android phones with dual core.... google's flagship device, Nexus S is single core. Google is going to stay with it for some time. I have been using Nexus One for some time now and I have not come across any instance where I was bogged down because I was running too many simultaneous apps. Sometimes a processor intensive app alone can slow me down, but that is due to android not being able to use my GPU to its full extent.
Thus, I agree with OP. The experience is what matters. Phone is not a PC where comparison can be made by merely comparing the hardware specifications. I think chassis 1 of Windows Phone 7 will get updates for at least 2 more years. Nevertheless, we should be seeing dual core windows phone 7 in early 2012.
Dual core is not about speed, it's about efficiency. You clearly weren't in the PC evolution era when we went from single core to dual core. Single core was still beating dual core in every benchmark, but the dual core was cooler/used less power/required fewer fans/apps that were "not responding" did not bring your entire system to a halt/etc.

I'm quite aware of this however speed is not entirely out of the equation. It's not like it's doing any huge favors still as smartphone batteries barely sustain the smartphone and it will likely be that way til we get those new solar-recharging things on the screen.

I agree with you. Dual core brings better power management. I did not sleep through the PC evolution. However, the discussion in these thread repeatedly pointed out advantage of speed. I begged to differ and laid out my arguments.
Nevertheless, I reiterate that unless you have two processor intensive activities running in parallel, you will not see any advantage (including power consumption) of multiple cores. My point is that you hardly do that on a phone.
PS: "apps that were "not responding" did not bring your entire system to a halt" has nothing to do with multiple cores. It's sand-boxing. Only Unix based systems can do that effectively. Windows has been getting better but the kernel does not support all the features.

new hardware Qualcomm’s next-gen (not wp7)

http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011...e-cpu-and-gpu-chipsets-coming-later-this-year
Does wp7 really want to be only single-core really old hardware? This new hardware in the end 2011 with Android even if unoptimised will kick ass to wp7 in current specs chassis even with Mango enhacments... MS needs to work harder...
Much better games performance, faster loading apps... etc...
75% lower power... I think MS needs to step back on power restrictions... this chips will be 75% less power... they are restricting too much the OS against the Android when the new chips will have a much better battery and performance rate than the actual ones...
Well, the benefit of multiple cores isn't as obvious as one may think because software has to be written in a special way in order to benefit from more than one core. So basically buying a phone with two cores running current versions of Android or WP7 or whatever is most probably just a waste.
That being said, newer processors are built using 45nm technology and consume less power, so using those more modern cores would probably be more noticeable.
And of course it's all going the way of megapixels. Since most people will automatically assume that if you have twice as many cores the thing will run twice as fast, you sort of must use those multiple cores, no matter if it benefits the end user or not.
So yeah, I guess MS have to update hardware support...
actually 28nm...
and this new hardware, have 2.5Ghz... even if they are multi-core they should go faster then current 1ghz... with less power... and games would benefit a whole lot...
besides even if current software isn't optimized, as soon as this harware would be released people would start to optimize it. Android already start it. Does MS wants to be on the back of mobile competion, again?
Whether games will be rewritten or not depends on how widespread those multicore devices will be and when. So far games aren't exactly utilizing modern hardware - how many of them take advantage of Samsung's awesome GPUs built into Galaxy S phones? When 90% of devices in the market don't have this type of tech, what's the point of rewriting everything just to accomodate for the 10%?
Now, I'm not saying that multiple cores aren't awesome, I'm just saying that it's highly unlikely that you'll see real benefit from them this year.

First: no flame intended.
You're making a lot of assumptions. Faster, less power. Don't look into the neighbor's garden to fix your own garden. Think what is necessary for WP7 to advance and be better.
Then, Android is so fragmented and has sooooo many models I wouldn't know where to start if I would want to try one. There is no real stability in term of standards. Every 6 months there's a better phone (like a new generation) and you end up with an older model after that period. So basically the cycle is much shorter than on every other platform. Even iPhone has a 1 year cycle. And I don't even want to think about privacy issues there, you basically upload all your data and behavior somewhere else and agree it can be used by others...
But that is not the real issue. People expect a platform to mature over night. It won't happen, we all need to be a bit patient. If you're looking for future features now, then you've already made a mistake, regardless of what platform you're on.
People should understand what they want from a phone first. We all know it's easier to spot problems with the things you're familiar with and you see the others as better. But once you try the others you realize it's the same story again, it looked better before when you didn't know it.
To conclude: my WP7 phone does exactly what's supposed to do, with the current hardware specs. Can it do more? Sure, but we have to be a bit patient. Then, if it doesn't deliver, try something else. Until then, I don't want to be a technology nomad, I'll always be unhappy as in a few months there will always be a better phone. I'd rather stick with something until it matures a bit and enjoy the ride/phone.
You do realise that the Chasis is minimum specs right? Manufaturers can use what they want as long as it's above those specs.
^ not for chips.

Fair enough, my bad.
The good thing about how MS is handling hardware is also the bad thing. They are making the drivers so we don't have to worry about putting up with crappy drivers from OEM's like HTC. The bad thing is in order to see newer hardware, MS has to release an update for said hardware's drivers. Mango will include drivers for a newer chipset, just not this Quad Core. Than again, the Quad isn't due out till the end of 2012, so why add support now or even write drivers for unfinished hardware.

I want to use my phone primary as a "information device", I use it to check my mails, send messages, update facebook, look things up on Wikipedia, search translations and browse the web. In order to do these things my old HTC Touch with 200 MHz was enough (it was slow but it has done the job well :-D ). But new devices like the WP7s add further possibilities. Entertaining has become more important. Entertaining has becom more important. But in order to use the handset as media player i don't think a Dual-Core Processor is necessary. And honestly, if I want to play a game with high graphics, i use my PC.
I don't want to complain but i totally agree with you moneysaver... Using Dual-Core processors would on one hand increase the gaming experience but on the other increase the price and drain more power. In my opinion "better" processor would bring to many downsides ATM. Another thing is, that you can outsource all heavy calculations to the cloud...
In short: If someone would offer me a phone with a efficient Dual-Core Processor, I would't say no. But i wouldn't say a Dual-Core Processor is a must-have...
Regards
Chris
Most important is low power with fast processor.

well low power it fast processor is exactly what this new chips are...
twitter takes 7 seconds to fully open... with a 2.5ghz would take 3 seconds and with a dual core much less... and which less consuptiom i cant see what how bad could it be...

I 'd rather have a fully used single core processor with optimized drivers from Microsoft than a 5GHz quad core with no software to use it. Next update will bring lower memory consumption and other optimizations that will be enough to coast us to 2012 were another update will (probably ? ) be released to support the upgraded chassis specs (dual cores maybe?)
iPhones have shown that optimized software makes up for less powered hardware (my wife's 3Gs is a living proof of that)
Android: Non-optmized OS.

i sincerely dont believe that wp7 Mango optimized with current Snapdragon can compete with this speed... and the later HTC EVO 3D... and of course

Moving to the SGS II

Well just got upgraded to the SGS II.
Curious if there is anything i should know about the device. I know its beautiful.. and i herd about screen issues but i was holding one and could see anything wrong with the screen...
So Pros, Cons, Quirks, anything you wish you knew off hand?
Depends on what you plan on doing with it ... If you bought for the snazzy voice talk options beware that some roms don't include it and doubletap of the home button to activate it is removed and many roms don't even have voice talk in them .... I got kinda frustrated with that at first ... And just installing the apk wouldnt get it working..... (
with my bluetooth headset ) () to claify that the call button wouldnt activate / open voice talk

not entirely true about voice talk actions. the Samsung one may have been taking out since it sucks anyways. stock android voice commands work better IMO.
I recently switched from the sensation to the Galaxy S2 and im 1000% glad i did, samsung did a amazing job on this device. And TouchWiz is pretty cool and not laggy and slow as sense.
Only con i can even think of is the screen issue with some lines and blotches. My screen personally has the blotches but its really not noticible unless you looking for it in a dark room and with dark lighting but even then its not bothersome at all.
Thanks for the replies. I am excited about this phone. Sucks that it is on back order and will be another week or more till it even ships .

also the actual processor and gpu sucks compared to Exynos used in the real SGS2 variants. I cant even consider TMo's SGS2 a real SGS2. just a little beefier Samsung Hercules.

nothing wrong? its old hardware. i would rather have the better performing Exynos processor than the watered down Snapdragon TMo SGS2. i dont see why Tmobile will sacrifice the main component that made the SGS2 an SGS2 just to claim that the phone supports up to HSPA+ 42mbps....which we will never see those speeds before the SGS3

The processor doesn't suck. It has better browser performance according to anandtech. The problem is that samsung has hardware acceleration for the stock rom on their other variants and not this one. The miui phone apparently blows most phones out of the water with its processor which is the same as this phone. Tons of optimization. All the same games run on both processors without hiccups. Also 42mbs is not the speed it can theoretically go up to that speed.
Realistic speeds are more along the lines 20 down and whatever uplpoad. I seen some people even get 26 down which is basically advertised lte speeds from Verizon. Also when you put both phones on gingerbread lets say cyanogen mod since its optimized you won't see a difference. You only see it on a stock touchwiz rom i doubt you'll see a difference when your on ice cream sandwich as well.

well no one on any network will see those speeds for a while, att uses the same processor for their LTE network, i dont have a problem with speeds where i live , i get 15 meg on a regular basis and spikes up to 20 sometimes. And as far as performance it seems to hold up fine against the other phones. The phone is fine

I don't see what people always say inferior processor. I don't see what my processor can't do that the other processors can. Quadrant scores ,benchmarks, don't matter in real life performance. The exynos processor doesn't give any magical ability to fly or anything.

i dont get it either, and as far as benchmarks even though they really dont matter my scores on the phone stock not rooted out of the box were 200 points better than any review on any website had the other variants at with the exynos.Gotta watch which article you read because it hard to find them that are un-biased .Naturally if they are reviewing a phone for a carrier its gonna be biased towards it. Only way of really reviewing a phone is hands on so you can do it yourself. Some people just care wayyy too much about stuff that dont matter.....i love this phone

that wasnt my point. it was just a waste for tmobile to choose the dual-core snapdragon processor just so they can claim their phone supports up to 42mbps. exynos only supports up to 21mbps which is just fine for real world experience.

the biggest difference between exynos and our dual-core snapdragon is GPU performance. i'm not even going to try to explain the differences myself as its already been said main times. so i will just quote from this article:
In return for this boost in possible data rates, some things are lost with the change over to Snapdragon. Perhaps the most important difference between the Exynos and Snapdragon is the graphics performance. As is the case with all SoCs, these chips have dedicated GPUs. The Qualcomm chip in the T-Mobile Galaxy S runs an Adreno 220, which is a fine component. Exynos, on the other hand, far surpasses it in graphical prowess.
The Exynos is the first mainstream SoC to license and use the ARM Mali-400 GPU. This is a quad-core graphics processor that bests all the other chips in GPU performance. So by going with a Snapdragon, even one clocked up to 1.5GHz, T-Mobile is sacrificing a significant amount of performance.
Straight processing power is also greater on the Exynos chip, but the gap is smaller than for the GPU. Qualcomm still uses its Scorpion core — a core developed to match the Cortex-A8, but Exynos is Cortex-A9. Snapdragon isn’t completely left in the dust because it’s still a solid custom architecture, but a 1.2GHz Exynos will still crunch more bits than a 1.5GHz Snapdragon.
The Snapdragon will offer users one additional benefit in the form of better battery life. The Qualcomm-designed Scorpion to be capable of asynchronous operation, making it possible for an unneeded core to be clocked down independently. This is much better for standby time and low-impact tasks.

Um your point valid we know its an inferior. But still it does what i needs to do you won't actually see the performance difference on the same optimized rom like cyanogenmod or miui. You won't even notice fps difference since their both locked at 60fps. So its fine. The point is its superior as seen on paper and benchmark test but they both work perfectly fine. The exynos doesn't give you wings.
There are no games the both processors can't play smoothly. Tell the truth most apps and everything start up at the same time and speed. So having all that processing power which will be null and void in like a year or two will really matter. A lot of apps and games say not compatible with the samsung galaxy s2 yet. Because of the processor and gpu combo. This is for the original version of the galaxy s2.
If the exynos made me play a game that can only run on that processor then yeah. But it doesn't. It doesn't make anything load faster either.
by the time a game comes out that fully puts a either of those processors to use we will be using another phone with different processors and who cares about games on a phone, just get a ps3,360 or pc for that

i'm just waiting for the new-gen of games to come out to really see the limits of this qualcomm dual-core snapdragon. the new-gen games are closer to release dates than you think.
PLUS any mobile processor is pretty much null and void within a year or two. But at least the Exynos has a better chance of holding its ground.

All in all. It's your opinion and your view of what fits your needs right? It's not being constructive to give criticism when it only is one sided. I can tell you value the best and fastest in technology. there are ways to express it than to bring everyone down. I could care less about gpu or the type of processor because I have an actual laptop for that. I am happy with the speed and response of this phone. So to downplay things you think are wrong with this phone with cliffnotes and technical theories then you really aren't being constructive.

I played dungeon defenders I'm rooted it doesn't slow down or anything. I don't see your point. BladeSlinger is for all android devices.... Not to mention ShadowGun looks exactly like it in quality and i can play that on my device as well smoothly. Bladeslinger also pauses in the middle of gameplay to do a special move. Shadowgun enemies are always shooting at you.
Chainfire prove before that all you need is simple plugins to run the tega2 only games or qualcomm only games on any device. What makes you think it will be so different in the future. No one will be using the same exynos next year majority of ppl will sell of the galaxy s2 or the galaxy s3. It will be the same with the Qualcomm processor for the new krait or the new tegra3 processor. I can play dungeon defenders on mytouch 4g with its single core processor on miui. So what?

Exynos Variant to be tuned down?

Many of you saw the Geekbench Scores of the S9 Exynos.
Scores are ~3700 in single core and ~9000 in multi core.
Now I saw this article and the line where it says the Exynos will be tuned down to match the (much slower) Snapdragon model got my attention...
Can someone who has a retail unit (store worker,..) confirm the high Geekbench scores?

After reading your post and the page you linked... I have absolutely no words. I already bought (pre-order) the S9+ SM-G965FD just because of the Exynos 9810. (Specially after looking at the CPU benchmarks that you are referring to) Every single year, the Exynos outperforms the Snapdragon... not by much... but it is ALWAYS better... Better performance, better battery live, runs cooler... etc. But... this particular year (with the S9/S9+), after watching a bunch of YouTube videos, online reports and benchmarks, it seemed like the Exynos was going to totally kill the Snapdragon variant. I really hate the Qualcomm Snapdragon with their locked bootloader, locked everything, mediocre CPU performance. I hate it as much as I hate Apple. So... I really really really hope that information does not apply to a real consumer S9/S9+ unit. As soon as I get my S9+, the very 1st thing I am going to do is run Antutu 7 and Geekbench 4.
So... as OP mentioned... we need some Samsung Exynos 9810 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 benchmarks... (real retail S9/S9+ unit)
@TEKHD
Absolutely.
The first thing I do when I get my S9 is running a Geekbench.
If single core is not ~3700 and multi core ~ 9000 I send it right back.
I know some say benchmarks are useless but this clearly shows if the new Exynos is a big step up or not. S7 and S8 almost had the same CPU/GPU power.
DON'T tune it down Samsung. Please..
I read the same thing, its going to deter people from getting the exynos and piss off people who buy it and find out later.
Samsung get more and more stupid as the years pass honestly
Why don't we wait and see some real life results. Let's not ignore the fact that while it scores lower in some benchmarks, Snapdragon is so much better in games and emulators than Exynos. Just look at the tests comparing S8 variants. If it's again the same story, Snapdragon is the better choice.

Not for my usage. As soon as we get root, BL unlock and some sources (obviously this will come first for Exynos than SD), there will be custom kernel and overclock/overvolt to help us enjoy the full performance of Exynos variant.
So going for SD845 is not a better choice, it just depends on your usage (do you plan to unlock BL ? root ? magisk ? custom kernel ?)

The crapdragon will have a locked BL which automatically means it cannot be a better choice.
Theres only 2 reasons why anyone on xda would bother with it.
Your on verizon in which case exynos wont work or you really need carrier features like wifi calling or Volte. Other than that I have no idea why anyone here on xda would waste money on BL locked device when you have another option.

Based on past experience (there are many youtubers demonstrating this) Snapdragon runs better in games. And not just a "little" better, "much" better as in twice as fast in many cases.
BL will hopefuly be unlocked in the near future. Root will come regardless.

The BL will never get unlocked however and as long as you dont mind an 80% limit on charging your device yes there is root.

Dude , some of the emulators were slower on exynos because they weren't optimized for exynos. Not because of the GPU.

Actually, the devs of the Dolphin emulator (Game Cube and Wii) confirmed that Exynos lacks some vital (for their development) instructions that Snapdragon has. There are already vids appearing online (youtuber Techutopia for example) that prove how Exynos in S9 is still sub par (to even Snapdragon 835) in games. Of course, there are factors involved, but the picture slowly becomes clear. And it's the same as last year.

Exynos isn't easy to develop. Doesn't mean the exynos isn't capable of it.
I this point performance doesn't matter too much. Only thing that takes advantage of performance is when you're processing video/images, in which case it's a couple seconds usually, Or gaming, Most mobile games are light, and the heavy ones would have a marginal difference in quality.
I'm new to rooting and stuff, but pretty sure people can undownclock it right?
Also quick question does nerfing exynos performance result in better battery life? And does exynos have same battery life as snapdragon when it isn't nerfed? In the anandtech article it was something about task scheduler and not down-clocking, so it may have the same battery life, in which case I guess you could bring it back to peak performance and then down-clock for better battery.
With locked boot-loaders I read something a while ago that it isn't qualcomms fault (Other phones with same thing are easier). I think Samsung does it but that doesn't make sense as they are the ones that make exynos. I personally am going to get the Exynos note 9.
Take everything I said with a grain of salt, I'm a noob at rooting (I haven't rooted a phone yet, was going to do my OP5 before it got stolen)
I find it odd that while the Exynos performs good at single task benchmark, the SD kills it in Photo editing and other benchmarks.
I doubt it's tuned down but just a few select benchmarks out there right now aren't showing the full picture between these two devices right now. Time will tell so it's a wait and see.

Hey bro. Are you familiar with emulators on android? If yes, could be please test the game Mushihime-Sama (mushisam in MAME) in the Retroarch emu (from PlayStore) with the Mame 2014 core? I know i am being very specific, but it's been a sort of quest of mine for a few years: finding an android smartphone able to play this game at constant 60 fps. Thanks and congrats on you purchase!

Sorry- don't know anything about emulators. I've downloaded Retroach and Mame 2014 but how/where do I get the game you mentioned from?

Question Is there any way to "un-throttle" 9 Pro full potential?

Regarding the OnePlus throttling gate, you can read here:
Examining OnePlus' Performance Behaviour: Optimization or Misrepresentation?
www.anandtech.com
The OnePlus 9 seems to be throttling its performance in many popular apps
The OnePlus 9 Pro seems to be limiting the performance in popular apps like Chrome, Twitter, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and more.

This is just stupid, I have been running a 7 pro for 4 years, it has been, hands down, one of the best smartphones I ever owned, performance has been great from day 1 to last day and it is still living with a relative of mine, and he is supper happy with it, I have play a lot, like A LOT and it has worked flawlessly every single time.
I got a 9 pro in october past year and it has been a pain in the ass, the poor performance has been annoyingly usual, the only way to play 120FPS in some games is a magisk module intended for a Samsung F62 which I can't figure out why (because I have no knowledge about this) but it makes some game run 120FPS, however performance is really bad, there is frame drops in some points where my couple's nord 2 demolishes with no issue... I can't figure out why a nord 2 outperforms my 9 pro (i know nord 2 is 90Hz but it is much more solid 90FPS being lower tier).
Let me explain, my couple nord 2 remains 90FPS where my 9 pro gets as low as 30FPS, it is noticeable and annoying.
Is there some sort of magisk module or something "comfortable" for newbies which can be enabled or disabled at taste? I don't mind rebooting phone (I do every time i want to play some games with module I mentioned xd)
I did not tinker with kernels (not yet, did in the past with my former LG G2 and Galaxy S3 but it was quite different). I would like to remain in the Oxygen OS path for now too.
I tried lots of things, AI booster for magisk, also Adreno drivers and nothing seems to work, just performance scaling which seems to lower freq in order to improve battery life, but never higher performance (high performance mode in battery settings seems to do nohing, also tried)
Looking for this as well, as well as a module to disable annoying Doze by the SystemUI. I tried a few modules but the devices still dozes.

The links you posted, those articles are not RELEVANT to YOUR issue. The throttling you're experiencing is a thermal throttling behavior that is literally NORMAL and part of EVERY OEM/Phone.
If you're on a STOCK ROM, the only way to somewhat "kill" the default throttling behavior is to disable/freeze the BATTERY package (app) either via Titanium Backup or some other app. That will prevent the phone from throttling based on the SKIN/Battery temperature.
Otherwise, Custom ROMs based on either OOS12 or OOS13 don't have any of that stock OEM throttling behavior.

Is it really thermal throttling? I mean, phone does not get any warmer than usual and for example, Brawl Stars is capped at 60 FPS like most games in BBK phones (but Brawl stars worked 120FPS flawless some time ago, not much, a year ago or so I had a Realme GT Neo 2 which ran games buttersmooth and has basically the same software, color OS, which now has the same issue, games capped to 60 FPS and crap performance)
That is not normal behaviour because Brawl Stars devs claimed the game is fully unlocked and if it works below screen refresh is because of the phone software, that's the "throttling" I mean, don't know if it is because of the famous whitelisting of Oppo.
What I mean is in previous software games worked properly and now performance is a joke (I mention realme GT Neo 2 because is what I could test in the past, I loved it, that's why is a bummer getting a "better phone" which works much worse).

An Xbox? Are you from USA?
I just want my phone works as it should, I don't care about battery.
Also tried disabling battery app and no difference, same behaviour, I'm in OOS13 latest update.
Maybe I should give a try to custom ROM...

it is because of thermal throttling, literally. The phone doesn't get warmer because it's being limited, hence the point of thermal throttling.
The refresh rate - FPS - in a game depends solely on the devs. If the game has in one device for example support for 120 FPS, and it doesn't have in another device, it's not because of the device but because the developers either didn't "whitelist" that specific device or weren't updated in a longer time.

Hmm...
With the magisk module I mentioned device name changes from LE2123 to SO-52A or something similar, makes also work codm 120 FPS pretty good, much better than brawl stars which is much weaker in terms of graphics quality and detail.
Is there any way to spoof model name to test this? If so devs are lying big time. When launched 9 pro they announced collab with many games, even hypertouch feature which is gone and for what seems now touch sampling rate is just 120Hz from the 360 advertised (monitoring with apps say so).
Also tried to disable battery app and no difference, behaviour is the same.

Disabling the battery app is for the throttling workaround, not to increase the frames in the game that don't support it on your device. lol
Anyways, blame the devs...They're the ones that need to add support for the specific device to go above the XY FPS.
The smartphone wasn't intended to be a gaming device. Chipset and battery not rated for it. Get an Xbox or some similar device for gaming that it was intended for! Just my opinion.
You can test the throttling using a CPU/GPU Throttle Testing app. The OP 9 starts throttling at a low temperature, I can notice FPS dropping in games starting at 38 degrees.
I use a cooling fan attached to my OP to keep the phone at a constant 32 degrees. I also bought a heat dispersion case to help further.
Also using Konabess to undevolt the GPU also helps a bit.

I'm not asking for it to perform in graphic demanding games, I'm telling you even a redmi note 10 pro (that thing is actually not rated for anything) outperforms the 9 pro in light gaming because it is not capped.
Blame the devs, blame OnePlus, I just want to know if there is any solution, I purchased the phone a few months ago and I'm finding stupid behaviours an "allegedly" flagship should not have.
Jeez even my couple Nord 2 is much better in games, that hurts...
And yeah. Get an Xbox blablabla, I do own a PS4, a powerful laptop and a powerful desktop, I just want my stupid phone to do what it should do or at least know why or if it can be solved, this is not r/xbox.
This is an issue many people complain about but OnePlus ever stated anything.
For what I can see my options are getting a cheap 120HZ phone or custom ROM (I saw a blackshark 4 for 200EUR which runs games fine)

The thing is when released the 9 pro, OnePlus brand had collabs with many games, even hypertouch, all of it disappeared into thin air...
That was the main reason for me to purchase, I had a great experience with my former 7 pro and I couldn't even think this could be a thing.
https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1367122914961670156
This thread is of the main dev of the game I'm talking about. He claims the brand has to whitelist app in order to make it work 120HZ/120FPS.
Is there no way to modify that "whitelist"? I've read sometimes about this but rarely found anything (anything users can do about it lmao) and we all know how lazy oppo is with this things, there can be a thousand posts in OnePlus community ther will never answer.

This is a GAME SIDE issue, not a phone-side issue. There is no whitelist on a phone that will enable you the unsupported FPS.

You are totally correct my friend... I have been tinkering with vmos app, I created a virtual machine in my own phone (lmao sounds like science fiction, but damnit this 888 has muscle) and it is just because devs do it intentionally.
I tried different phone makes and models... Casually Snapdragon flagship cap the game to 60FPS, but NORD devices make it run 120 FPS (you can set FPS settings in the VM option).
This is hilarious. Seems to me OnePlus just broke some contract conditions and this is devs punishment... Makes no sense, I have to test further but this is what I found for now. My doubt is if I might get a ban for using the game in a virtual machine... This is not relevant for this post!
Hope it helps someone, for exclusive games working just 120HZ in some devices you can spoof model name without root

If I set up OnePlus LE2123/20/25 game runs 60FPS.
If I set for instance, my couple nord 2 DN2103 runs 120FPS same settings, just device name and brand changed!
Presets for S20, Xiaomi 10, vivo x50 all run 120 FPS.
Which for me is big yikes It is clearly devs fault, there has to be something odd...

So what are you saying exactly: if we spoof our device to a different one, we get more fps?
