Nexus 7 Flex Problem - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

When I slightly try to flex my Nexus 7 horizontally, a sort of an odd sound comes from it. Do other other users also observe this. Is it of poor build quality?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

The nexus 7 is not a flexible device. That odd sound is likely a signal to the user to stop trying to flex the device.

I may sound like an OCD victim, but I was trying to test the rigidity of the device. Like The kind of tests tech Youtubers do with Mechanical keyboards and other large devices. Marques Brownlee had done an extreme variation of what I did on his LG G Flex video. While I understand that LG Flex has been specifically manufactured to withstand these extreme tests and conditions, I just wanted to see how my Nexus 7 compares. I was not at all extreme with it and just slightly flexed it, subjecting it to those conditions which were all extremely likely on normal user's usage scenario. Pardon me, if you thought what I did was wrong.

I wouldn't take it personally. It's just that it kind of gets old when you keep reading posts in the forums of people looking for defects in their devices that aren't really defects at all. If you take a gander in the Nexus 5 forums, you'll see they are littered with threads about real non-issues. For example, one guy made a post saying he thought his Nexus 5 had a problem because when he would push hard on the back under the camera, it would creak a little bit.
My advice... Just use your tablet like it was meant to be used, and don't sit on it or do anything that would cause it to flex. One can really drive him/herself mad looking for imperfections in his/her electronic devices.

I agree.

I'm not judging right or wrong here, I just don't see the point of stress testing a perfectly good device (unless of course you are a tech editor and want to show your readers/viewers a potential device weakness). Personally, I treat my devices with kid gloves - I like the way they look and feel now, and I'd like them to be the same 2 years down the road when I trade up to the newest version.
And flexing a device that wasn't intended to flex is just asking for problems.

maybe i should make a company that would take your current android phone and convert it to aluminum body with aluminum back cover!
Would you pay me $150 for that kinda service?
I don't need to thank a fictitious character.

To be honest I bough the GN because of the large screen... my old iPhone was just too small for my hands. Now with the iPhone 5's bigger screen I guess I'll have to see how much the extra screen real estate makes a difference, I doubt much as far as typing goes though due to the same width!
Because it means l'm not easily fooled by bull**** products.

I traded my Epic Touch for this phone. Mainly for the pure Google greatness that is the Nexus Project. I got sick of having a phone that I had to mod out of the box to be mildly satisfied with. Having a phone that starts with AOSP is a wonderful thing. As for the iPhone. I will never knowingly buy an apple product. I try to stay as informed as I can and by doing that I just cannot buy a product from a company I truly hate. After having this phone for a few weeks I can say this. As long as Samsung makes the nexus. I will never buy a non nexus phone again.

The worse battery life...
The iphone 5 has a stupid aspect ratio on the screen. They also kept the width the same while increasing the length LOL? Viewing pictures on it must be odd..I can care less about the A6 processor and the new camera.
According to apple my gnex is already essentially an iPhone except without the locked down iOS, that the sheeple seem to love.

Toddler threw wife's Sensation in a coffee cup

We do have a subsidized phone available through T-Mo, so I'm inclined to use that.
GS3 seems like the obvious choice, but I'm loathe to hand her electronics destroying hands a new phone (this is her 3rd phone in just over 2 years. The others were similarly destroyed).
I'd be very tempted to hand her the GN and keep the GS3
How annoyed am I going to be with the GS3?
Other ideas?
And why couldn't she have waited a month until the Galaxy Note 2 came out?
Why not get her an older phone like the defy lol

Perhaps you could look around and checks phones that will have a nice resale value right now. Not sure what choices you have with tmobile. A gs3 could be had for $200 upgrade price, flipped for $500+ and then buy a nice little mid range expendable phone that will get the job done. Or maybe buy two. This method has it's goods and bads, but if a smartphone is really needed for phone amd text, and the extras for distraction/minimal tasks and getting on the web for fun, reading or tips on breasts hurt while breastfeeding then this might be a good path. Otherwise, get a nice little unlocked nokia or moto for cheap until toddler destruction improves.

Also it's waterproof, so that helps with the drink issues.

The key word I see here is toddler, give the toddler that busted sensation. That way he/she has their own phone to dunk in coffee. The other thing is to teach your wife the proper way to deal with water damage, ie battery pull and rice.
And teach her not to put her phone in front of a baby. And tell her she won't like it the next time it happens.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
why does she need a phone in the kitchen in the first place?

Choices...

I have a upgrade and Im wondering which phone to get. I like the s3 a lot. Especially the new touchwiz. But I don't like that it could be glitchy and a cheap build. Plus I have had my note for about 6 monthes and I have had some screen problems like the weird ruff spots on it. And I don't want to have the same problems again with the s3. Also is the overheating fixed? I don't want to root this phone (atleast for now) I just want a nice clean reliable and custom experience. Also is the retina display noticeably better? If you have had any problems with your s3 please tell me. Any opinions will be helpful. I'm pretty open minded right now.

Best one is the gs3 cause the one x is older and dosnt have expandable storage or a super amoled or as great dev support and dont get me started with the i****onmyself 5
Save it for the Note 2.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
The note is great its just a tad to big. The 4.8 inch screen of s3 is great size for me. But I have heard it has a number of problems like overheating and its fragile compared to other devices or so I've read. A HUGE pet peeve I have is when the plastic battery door creaks and squeaks. Is that apparent on the g3? And if it does, how well do those metal doors on eBay work?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
One more thing. Will the g3 run smooth and reliable without modifing it? I want to use it right out of the box with the least amount of problems as possible
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Never had a problem with my backdoor or overheating and yes its perfectly stable with stock
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Are all the us carrier versions the same spec wise?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Depends.
If by "overheat" you mean getting uncomfortably hot, that only happens when you play intensive games like NOVA3 for extended periods of time.
Backdoor creak has never happened to me, but my buttons on the side creek occasionally.
As for your options, honestly the One X doesn't look shabby, but remember that there is less development in that sector, and that the SGS3 has plenty of devs.
As for the iPhone 5, I can tell you from my experience-- that if you enjoy Android, stay away from iOS unless you want to dumb yourself down to a trained monkey. That's my biggest problem with iOS, it's made for extremely simple people. Jailbreaking can't fix the nature of that OS, and that made me dump my iPhone.
In my opinion, I think you should get the SGS3. Build quality won't reach the iPhone 5's, but other then that you won't have any regrets. Besides, you can always exchange.
Goodluck bud!
PS: All US Carrier models are the same, besides the radio. Same Dual Core A-15's @ 1.5GHz.
The main problem I have with the s3 is build quality, reliability, accessories. The iPhone 5 IA built so nicely it makes me feel like it's actually worth 200-300 dollars. The s3 just doesn't give me that quality feel.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

I've had my S3 since early July, naked screened, and when i wipe the slight smudges off of it from my fingers, it shines like the day i bought it.
As for the battery door.... yea, i'm pretty sure the only people you'd hear about it being squeaky or cheap from are the iPhone 5 Republic. To them, anything plastic is sh*t anymore. I'd hate to have seen how they chose a phone 6+ years ago, when very few phones even used a THIN metal shell, and smartphones were limited to Windows Mobile and Blackberries basically. I never hear a noise from it, and it's far from cheap feeling. It's actually Polycarbonate plastic.
I've had it running a custom ROM since i'd say just under a month into having it.... but i still tend to stick to the tweaked stock roms more than CM10 stuff, simply because i like the TouchWiz camera. Runs fantastic.
Now Im reading about loose power buttons and even one guys supposedly fell off. OS and screen size of the s3 combined with the build quality, reliability, and retina display of the iPhone 5 would be a fantastic phone.

defective led notification?

I don't know if mine is defective or not. But the color isn't pure white from what I see on the nexus 4 in videos. I think it should be the same right?
Its more of a yellowish tint?
There is no spec on the color of the light, and what the nexus 4 does is irrelevant. If it lights up at the right time it is fine.

I kinda agree with what you say, except that when you buy something "expensive", your expectations are high and you want something perfect (i don't own the nexus 7 so i don't know how should it be) but if the led isn't showing the right color, it's something to care about, though it's a small defect..
I also see what you're saying, but like the poster above me said, there is no specification on the notification light, so there isn't much you can do. Some people have notification LEDs that don't even work apparently. Since the reality is that this generation seems to be having many build quality issues, it doesn't seem like it's worth taking the chance to return it, even though OP probably can't over this issue anyway.

Mine is more eggshell white but remember its only a ~$200 tablet and LG probably uses different LEDs that may be tuned to a more brilliant white

It's funny I didn't even know I had a notification light until one day I left my tablet sitting there and got a notification while the screen was off. So I believe it only works when when screen is off it's the only time I've seen it go off.... It's on the bottom of the screen right under the button bar (back, home, and recents button). I have been flashing ROMs, kernels, modifying my system to my liking, and trying different things so I never even noticed the light lol.

maybe they got paid out by certain companies? doesn't make sense why they wouldn't unless there was an incentive not to.
kinda like how Apple pays game developers not to release their games on Android, and keep it an iOS exclusive. (a sad tactic btw)

iPhones = sell 20 million devices (probably a lot more, actually) easily, and a metric frakton of Otterboxes.
Nexus = sell a rather paltry number, no big sales except right when it first becomes available, no long term ecosphere behind it even in spite of it being a solid device, etc.
I mean really, go to any store, anywhere - Best Buy, Fry's, MicroCenter, Sears, hell even a 7-11 - and you'll find stuff for the iPhones but you won't find diddly Jack Squat for anything else. It's sad that this is how the world operates but, that's how the world operates.

I doubt the CS knows for sure. Just like CS at pretty much all companies. They usually don't know anything but what is on their trouble shooting flow chart in front of them.
